Where It All Began

Chapter 12-Danny Green

Like Kara, Danny had struggled finding his way without the Navy. He was quickly hired and trained as a deputy in a small department. As in most small departments, Danny had multiple responsibilities. Leader of the SWAT team, assistant jail administrator, and dispatch supervisor. He found meaning regardless. And in time, his marriage healed and they had Zoe. He and Kara bought a house on the outskirts of town with a big yard and a pond. It was perfect.

Debbie was living nearby and helped with babysitting. Danny had never been able to locate any of his own family, not that they'd want anything to do with him. His mom and dad had never forgiven him for joining the Navy. So, despite the losses, Danny was doing okay. One day, one of the dispatchers let him know some people were in the lobby requesting to see him. She let them into an interview room and Danny grabbed a cup of coffee and a notebook, figuring it was a walk-in report. He was shocked when he walked in and saw his grandmother, Uncle Adam, sister Dana and brother Derek.

"How?" Danny said as Dana gave him a huge hug.

"It's a really long story. We followed your career. Didn't want to bother you when you were so busy, then lost track. We found you and rented a house here in town." Adam explained.

"I…just figured…" Danny said.

"Its alright. We are just so happy to reconnect now. I can't wait to meet your wife and children." Danny's grandmother, Elizabeth said as she patted his arm.

"I'd better call her and let her know you all will be coming for dinner." Danny said. He was only thankful Kara was off at a normal time and could throw a meal together. He stepped out, made the phone call, was given orders for a grocery list, and then walked back in. "Alright, Kara said dinner would be done at six and I have to go to the grocery store. Here's my address." Danny said as he handed the address to his uncle.

"We'll be there." Adam answered.

"Is there just the four of you?" Danny asked.

"Oh, my wife; Abigail. So, five." Adam said.

"Perfect. I am really glad to see you all, and you'll love Kara and the kids." Danny said.

"I'm certain we will." Elizabeth said as she gave Danny a kiss on the cheek. She was frail and it was obvious she had suffered many losses. Danny didn't even bother asking who all, because it was obvious. The family was gone other than his grandmother, uncle and siblings. They separated ways, Danny finished work and headed to the grocery story for Kara, getting her what she had asked for. By the time he walked into the house, Kara already had supper mostly finished, all while wrangling two kids. She put him at the sink, washing dishes. Zoe was down for a nap and Frankie was playing. For Danny, it was perfect; other then the dishes.
