Brandt stood finally healed from his injuries across from me in our living room. I glanced at the keys in my hands that I was giving up to go on a mission. He knew this was maybe the last time he would see me since we had started to try to mend 'us'. I just wasn't sure, I knew it would take a while to re-adjust but I couldn't shake the feeling that I wasn't supposed to be here. I took one last look at my ring and pulled it off my finger and sat it down on the table in front of me along with the key to the apartment. Brandt sighed as he looked at it making a move towards me. I stepped backwards as he walked towards me.
"Kens…" His voice threatening to break as he spoke my name. I stood looking down at my feet,
"You know as well as I do that this isn't working ever since you decided to push the wedding and disappear for months on end. Sure, we got you back in one piece but the dynamic has changed, Brandt." I stressed his last name at the end of my speech. I looked up into his blue eyes. I saw the pain flash through them as he realized the steps we had taken backwards.
"I'm angry, all the time. This isn't the right time for us. It's time to explore other avenues. Let me go." I told him as I moved towards the door. I reached for the handle as I felt Will come up behind me, he wrapped his arms around my torso.
"I'm so sorry Kens. Give me another chance, I want to make this up to you." I smiled sadly and turned around in his arms.
"We'll talk when I get back from my mission." I told him as he unraveled his arms from my back. His eyes begged me not to go, but this was my job and I wanted to leave as fast as I could. He knew I would not back down from a mission.
"Okay." He said as a small smile graced his features with a glimmer of hope on his face. I reached for the handle to the door when I heard him quietly say.
"I love you, be safe." I smiled slowly and walked out the door as my feet guiding me towards HQ. I let out a sigh of relief and shook out the stress I had been holding from the last month I had been trying things out with Brandt. It was the relief I held onto, the need to work that drove me towards what I needed to get away from. Smiling as the sunlight hit my face I jogged faster towards my getaway from the life before me.
Reality wasn't meant for spies like us. Normal was just a setting on the dryer, it was foolish of me to think I could make things work with Brandt right after a drastic change with Ethan. As I got to the building in front of me I pushed through the doors as fast as I could, here was my freedom.
As I opened the doors it looked like a normal court building, I walked to the side where the retina scanner was, it let me through to the actual IMF building. Analysts and Technicians were doing their due diligence, working their agents through their missions. I walked straight to Erika Sloan's office as she had become the secretary. I knocked slowly.
"Come in." She said. I pushed through the large doors that stretched to the length of the ceiling. Upon seeing me she smiled, got up, and gestured me towards the seat across from her desk.
"Kensi O'Connell. Great to actually meet you on good terms." She told me as I made my way into the seat across from her desk, when I sat, so did she.
"Good to see we can start on good terms." I replied to her she nodded gesturing towards the wall now. She pressed a button and the blinds closed, lights turned off as I watched a video being played. Carnage and mobs played on the screen.
"It has been brought to my attention that Bogotá, Columbia has been on our radar for quite some time for outbreaks of violence and gang activity. I figure you could use the vacation and the company will be most improved." She gave me a sly smile before continuing. Not that I knew what that entailed.
"You'll be doing some reconnaissance on the country in general, nothing more, nothing less. We have your travel paperwork and hotel accommodations worked out." She told me as she slipped me a packet.
"Benji will be your right hand man in this. Although this is a solo mission, he will help you from HQ. When you get back in a month we'll have more for you, but for now, go have fun we'll update you on any unrest. You're bags are packed downstairs in Benji's quarters. Talk to him he'll have more information for you there. Good luck Agent O'Connell." I stood from my chair gave her a nod and walked out to the elevator across the hall. I pushed the button and started to open the manila envelope in my hands. The plane ticket was there along with a hotel called Click-Clack. I laughed a little seeing the name as I heard the elevator bell ding notifying me that it had arrived. I stuffed the paperwork back into the envelope, pushing the button labeled B, as the car started moving. The ride down was uneventful. I played with my hands noticing the loss of the weight on my finger from before, this would be my first mission without it on my hand. The elevator dinged again announcing my arrival to the basement. I stepped forwards trying to remember where Benji was set up now. As I walked around the maze of computers, monitors and giant screens I heard my name being called from the south end.
"Kensi, over here." Benji told me as he hid behind the computers. I walked towards him happily.
"Hey Benji, how ya doing?" I asked my former partner.
"Oh you know, Sloan put me down here for a bit to get us out of the field, even though I'm a field agent now. So just dandy, bit happy to know we're not needed yet since everything from the last mission has calmed down. No need to save the world just yet." He smiled taking his eyes from the computer to look at me.
"But how're you?" He asked as he looked down at my finger.
"In need of a getaway." I told him. He smirked knowing something I didn't. I noticed the slight smile he gave me and the way his ears twitched upwards at the mention of the vacation I needed,
"Well that's a good thing because that's basically what you'll be doing in Bogotá. I assume Sloan sent you down here to get more acquainted. So here's your suitcase and weapons, all ready to go. You don't even need to lift a finger because from what I've heard you're not getting on a commercial airline. It's a corporate firm we've hired to fly the agents out and back." He said as he got out of his chair and rolled my suitcases to me from under his desk.
"Huh… Why would she do that?" I asked him.
"No idea, maybe she had a similar situation?" He looked back at me. I brushed the hair from my face and sighed.
"From what I deduced when we were in Berlin that must be the case. I just…" I trailed off I wasn't used to talking my feelings out. I had always inferred from others, I helped others through their issues and never really had time to feel my own.
"Hey…" Benji said grabbing my hands abruptly seeing the emotions flow through my face.
"No matter what you decided, you have to make sure to put yourself first. There's no shame in that Kensi." He continued making sure I absorbed his words. I nodded, my eyes threatening to release tears. I looked up and sniffled as I did this Benji pulled me into a hug.
"Everything is going to be fine. Go relax on the beach for me when you get there. As always you know how to reach me. I'll contact you with any information that may be of importance." He told me as he pulled away from me. I nodded and took the bags from him and wheeled my way out of the IMF. I got a taxi to the airport, found the tarmac of the private airline, and met the pilots who seemed quite professional and laid back. I smiled at them as I put my sunglasses on and handed them my boarding pass and bags.
"Thank you." I told them as I entered the private jet. I sat down in a seat and got comfortable and soon sleep came over me as we took off into the skies. Hopefully this would be exactly what I needed.
