Chapter 5: Welcome Aboard

(In the fort's prison, a cannonball hits the cell wall next to Alastor's. Everyone ducks for cover as the outer wall explodes. When the dust clears, the prisoners in the cell leave through the big hole in the wall. One turns to Alastor still stuck in his own cell.)

Prisoner: My sympathies, friend. You've no manner of luck at all.

(Alastor watches them escape to freedom with chagrin. The full moon appears from behind some clouds casting an eerie light upon the port. Now alone in the prison, Alastor takes a bone from the empty cell next to him and holds it out through his door. He whistles and the guard dog holding the keys comes out from his hiding place.)

Alastor: (softly) Come on, doggie... it's just you and me now. It's you and ol' Al, come on... Come here, that's a boy... Good boy. Come get the bone.

(The dog makes his way over to him whimpering.)

Alastor: That's a good boy, come on! Bit closer. That's it, doggie. Come on you filthy, slimy, mangy cur.

(Just as the dog reaches him, they hear the cell block door open and voices getting closer. The dog runs off with the keys.)

Alastor: (upset) No, no, no, don't do that. I didn't mean it. I didn't...

(He stops talking as the dead body of a soldier tumbles down the stairs at the end of the hallway and a pair of pirates enter. One is a short fish-like demon with grey-blue skin and fins on his head, cyan eyes, dark-blue hair and yellow goggles. The other is a tall bird-like demon with dark-grey feathers, a light-grey face, a light-colored left eye and a dark-colored right eye.)

Baxter: This ain't the armory, Travis.

(Travis puts his sword away and spots Alastor in the cell.)

Travis: (surprised) Well, well, well... Look what we have here, Baxter. Captain Alastor Sparrow.

(They walk up to his cell door. Travis spits on the ground.)

Baxter: (grins) Last time I saw you, you were all alone on a God-forsaken island, shrinking into the distance. His fortunes aren't improved much.

Alastor: (tauntingly) Worry about your own fortunes, gentlemen. The deepest circle of Hell is reserved for betrayers... and mutineers.

(Travis and Baxter's smiles drop. Travis shoots his arm through the bars and grabs Alastor by the throat. Moonlight shines in the cell. And Travis's arm turns into a skeletal arm.)

Alastor: (shocked) So there IS a curse. That's interesting.

Travis: (aggressively) You know nothing of Hell.

(He shoves Alastor back and pulls his arm out. It returns to normal. The two leave the prison and Alastor is left alone again. He looks at the bone in his hand in wonder.)

Alastor: That's very interesting...

(The clouds in the sky hide the moon again. In the bay, the Black Pearl continues the shoot cannons at the port. Moxxie, Millie and some other pirates return to the ship with Charlie. As their rowboat approaches the tall menacing galleon, Charlie realizes its the same ship she saw all those years ago when she got the medallion. She's feeling scared but maintains a courageous attitude. Moxxie and Millie take her on board where more pirates roam around. They take notice of the young woman now with them. Charlie looks up at the upper deck and sees a shady figure staring down at her. A small animal of some sort jumps on his shoulder. A tall, muscular hellhound with light-and-dark-grey fur and a scar on his left eye walks up to them.)

Vortex: I didn't know we were taking on captives.

Moxxie: (insistently) She's invoked the right of parley with Captain Pentious.

Charlie: I am here to negotiate-

(Vortex slaps her and cuts her off.)

Vortex: (firmly) You'll speak when spoken to!

(His wrist is grabbed by the figure from the upper deck. He is a snake-like demon with dark skin, red eyes, a long neck, pink claws, a yellow cobra hood and a yellow and black striped tail both with pink eye patterns. He wears a fine dark suit and big round dark hat with a big blue feather. The hat also has a big single pink eye and a mouth of sharp yellow teeth like it's alive itself.)

Pentious: (sternly) And ye'll not lay a hand on those under the protection of parley.

Vortex: Aye, sir.

(He releases Vortex who steps aside. Charlie knows this sinister looking being to be the captain. He grins at her and shows a set of yellow teeth. Some of them are made of gold and silver. A monkey sits on his shoulder also showing gold and silver teeth.)

Pentious: (politely) My apologies, Miss.

Charlie: (professionally) Captain Pentious... I am here to negotiate the cessation of hostilities against Port Royal.

Pentious: There was a lot of long words in there, miss, we're not but humble pirates. What is it that you want?

Charlie: I want you to leave and never come back.

(The pirates behind Pentious laugh.)

Pentious: (smiles) I am disinclined to acquiesce to your request. (frowns) Means "No".

Charlie: (aggravated) Very well.

(She stands next to the ship's railing and holds the medallion out above the water.)

Charlie: I'll drop it!

(They all get quiet and stare at her.)

Pentious: (confused) Me holds are bursting with swag. That bit of shine matters to us... Why?

Charlie: It's what you've been searching for. I recognize this ship. I saw it eight years crossing the sea.

Pentious: (intrigued) Did you, now?

Charlie: Fine. Well, I suppose if it is worthless then there's no point in me keeping it.

(She dangles it by the chain. The pirates panic a little and step forward.)

Pentious: No!

(Charlie still holds it and smiles that she had gotten to them.)

Pentious: Ah. (chuckles) You have a name, missy?

(She remembers that informing them she's the governor's daughter would be dangerous and chooses to use a different name.)

Charlie: Charlie... Turner. I'm a maid in the governor's household.

(Pentious is stunned by the name and turns to face his crew.)

Pentious: Miss Turner!

(They stunned as well and mutter amongst themselves.)

Moxxie: (whispers) Bootstrap!

(Pentious turns back to Charlie.)

Pentious: (grins) And how does a maid come to own a trinket such as that? Family heirloom, perhaps?

Charlie: I didn't steal it, if that's what you mean.

Pentious: Very well. You hand that over, we'll put your town to our rudder and never return.

(Charlie gladly hands the medallion over to him. He gives it to his monkey who crawls away with it. Charlie waits for him to fill his end of the deal.)

Charlie: Our bargain...?

(Pentious says nothing more. He turns away and nods to Vortex. The hellhound calls out to the crew.)

Vortex: Still the guns, and stow 'em! Signal the crew, set the flags and make good to clear port!

(The pirates start scrambling around and get to work. Pentious heads back to the upper deck. Charlie follows him.)

Charlie: (shocked) Wait! You have to take me to shore! According to the code of the Order of the Brethren-

(The captain faces her with a devious look.)

Pentious: Firstly, your return to shore was not part of our negotiations nor our agreement, so I must do nothing. And secondly, you must be a pirate for the pirate's code to apply and you're not. And thirdly... the code is more what you'd call guidelines than actual rules. Welcome aboard the Black Pearl, Miss Turner!

(He walks away from her laughing maniacally. Charlie is left speechless and terrified as Moxxie and Millie take her away. The Black Pearl prepares to depart Port Royal with its new prisoner.)

And there we have Sir Pentious as Captain Barbossa along with a few minor characters as the members of his crew who have lines in the movie. The main conflict of the story has commenced.
