Chapter 6: A Deal With a Pirate
(The next morning, Vaggie wakes up on the street where she was knocked out. After regaining her senses, she looks around and sees people and soldiers moving all around trying to fix damaged buildings and tend to the wounded as a result of the Black Pearl's assault. She picks up her sword and axe and remembers what she saw just before she was knocked out and races to the fort. When there, she runs right into a command center where Lucifer, Seviathan and his lieutenants are looking at a big map and Razzle and Dazzle stand guard.)
Vaggie: (frantically) They've taken her! They've taken Charlie!
(Seviathan doesn't look up from the map as he answers.)
Seviathan: Razzle, Dazzle, remove this woman.
(The goats try to grab Vaggie's arms but she shakes them off.)
Vaggie: We have to hunt them down! We must save her!
Lucifer: (worried) And where do you propose we start? If you have any information concerning my daughter, please share it.
(Razzle and Dazzle remember their conversation with Alastor.)
Razzle: That Alastor Sparrow... he talked about the Black Pearl.
Dazzle: Mentioned it, is more what he did.
Vaggie: Ask him where it is! Make a deal with him! He can lead us to it!
(Seviathan looks up at her with disapproval.)
Seviathan: No. The pirates who invaded this fort left Sparrow locked in his cell. Ergo, they are not his allies. (to Lucifer) Governor, we will establish their most likely courseā¦
(Vaggie slams her axe down on the map and quiets them.)
Vaggie: (impatient) Damn it! That's not good enough!
(Seviathan pulls the axe out and walks up to her. He moves her to the door.)
Seviathan: (sternly) Miss Turner, you are not a military expert, you are not a sailor. You are a blacksmith. This is not the moment for rash actions. Do not make the mistake of thinking you are the only one here who cares for Charlie.
(He gives her the axe and goes back to the map. Vaggie is still unconvinced that they're doing all they can to rescue Charlie. She makes a bold decision and secretly heads to the prison.)
(In his cell, Alastor desperately tries to pick the lock with a bone. He hears the door to the cell block open and immediately lays down on the ground so he doesn't look suspicious. Vaggie enters and runs up to his cell.)
Vaggie: (determined) You, Sparrow!
Alastor: (deadpan) Aye.
Vaggie: You are familiar with that ship, the Black Pearl?
Alastor: I've heard of it.
Vaggie: Where does it make berth?
Alastor: (amused) Where does it make berth? Have you not heard the stories? Captain Pentious and his crew of miscreants sail from the dreaded Isla de Muerta... it's an island that cannot be found except by those who already know where it is.
Vaggie: The ship's real enough. Therefore its anchorage must be a real place. Where is it?
Alastor: Why ask me?
Vaggie: Because you're a pirate.
Alastor: And you want to turn pirate yourself, is that it?
Vaggie: Never! (pauses) They took Miss Magne.
Alastor: Oh, so it is that you've found a girl. I see. Well, if you're intending to brave all, hasten to her rescue and so win fair lady's heart, you'll have to do it alone, sweetheart. I see no profit in it for me.
Vaggie: I can get you out of here.
Alastor: How's that? The key's run off.
Vaggie: I helped build these cells. These are half pin-barrel hinges. With the right leverage and the proper application of strength, the door will lift free.
(She picks up a small bench and wedges in between the bars on the door. Alastor looks up at her curiously.)
Alastor: What's your name?
Vaggie: Vaggie Turner.
(Alastor sits up intrigued.)
Alastor: That will be short for Vagatha, I imagine. Good, strong name. No doubt named by your father, eh? Was his name William Turner?
Vaggie: (surprised) Yes.
Alastor: (stands up) Well, Miss Turner, I've changed me mind. If you spring me from this cell, I swear on pain of death, I shall take you to the Black Pearl and your bonny lass. Is it a deal then?
(He smiles and sticks out his hand to through the bars. She hesitates for a second wondering why he's suddenly agreeing to help. She decides to find out later and shakes his hand.)
Vaggie: Agreed.
Alastor: Agreed! Get me out.
(Vaggie uses the bench as a lever to pull the cell door out. It crashes to the ground.)
Vaggie: Hurry, someone will have heard that.
Alastor: Not without my effects.
(He finds his belongings on a hook on the wall. He puts on his hat and straps on his belt with his weapons and compass. Vaggie notices that he checks his pistol with only one shot that he said wasn't meant for her.)
Vaggie: (confused) Why bother with that? You could have escaped if you killed me, but you weren't willing to use it.
(Alastor raises his eyebrow and points the gun at her.)
Alastor: Are you advising me that was a mistake?
(She looks at him unafraid for she believes that if he wouldn't actually shoot her before, he wouldn't now.)
Alastor: When you've only got one shot, it's best to wait for the opportune moment. That wasn't it. Nor it this.
(He puts his gun away and they hurry out of the prison. They get down near the docks and hide beneath a bridge. They see the Dauntless anchored out in the bay and the Interceptor next to a dock where Seviathan's men prepare it to pursue the Black Pearl.)
Vaggie: We're going to steal a ship? That ship?
(She points at the Dauntless. Alastor however points to the Interceptor.)
Alastor: Commandeer. We're going to commandeer that ship. Nautical term.
(He then gives her a serious look.)
Alastor: One question about your business or there's no use going. This girl? How far are you willing to go to save her?
(Vaggie looks him in the eye and speaks without hesitation.)
Vaggie: (confidently) I'd die for her.
Alastor: (relieved) Oh, good. No worries, then.
(A group of soldiers march by a rowboat sitting upside down on the beach. As soon as they're gone, the boat lifts up and shows two pairs of legs under it. They walk fast down the beach and into the water. They then slowly walk along the ocean floor. Underneath the boat's hull, Alastor and Vaggie are in an air bubble with the water up their chests.)
Vaggie: This is either madness... or brilliance.
Alastor: It's remarkable how often those two traits coincide.
(Vaggie's foot gets stuck in a lobster trap cage. She tries to shake it off but drags it along with her. The trap is connected to a buoy on the surface that gets pulled by it. A cabin boy fishing on a dock curiously watches the buoy move along the water. Alastor and Vaggie soon reach the Interceptor and emerge from the water. They scale the ship's stern after jamming the lobster trap on the rudder. They get on the top deck and find Lieutenant Stolas supervising a small group of sailors. Alastor wields his pistol and Vaggie her sword.)
Alastor: (threateningly) Everyone stay calm! We are taking over the ship!
Vaggie: Aye! Avast!
(Alastor looks at her in disbelief that she's trying to act like a pirate stereotype. The sailors just laugh.)
Stolas: (amused) This ship cannot be crewed by two people. You'll never make it out of the bay.
(Alastor points his gun right in Stolas' face.)
Alastor: (grins) Son, I'm Captain Alastor Sparrow. Savvy?
(Stolas' smile drops. On the dock, Seviathan observes his crew prep the Interceptor. Another lieutenant, Blitzo, sees something out in the bay.)
Blitzo: (alerted) Commodore!
(Seviathan turns and looks through a telescope. He sees Stolas and the men stationed on the Dauntless in a rowboat. Stolas stands up waving his hands.)
Stolas: (urgently) Sir! They've taken the Dauntless! Commodore! They've taken the ship! Sparrow and Turner, they've taken the Dauntless!
(Seviathan moved the scope to the Dauntless and sees Alastor and Vaggie alone onboard appearing to struggle getting the sails ready. He is both disappointed that Vaggie went behind his back to enlist Alastor's help and bewildered that Alastor's trying to get a ship ready to sail with help from only one person.)
Seviathan: Rash, Turner, too rash. That is, without doubt, the worst pirate I have ever seen.
(On the Dauntless, Alastor stands at the wheel. Vaggie runs up to him.)
Vaggie: Here they come.
(They see the Interceptor leaving the dock with its sails open heading towards them. Alastor smiles proudly. The Interceptor passes Stolas' crew in the boat.)
Stolas: Bring her around! Bring her around!
(The boat turns and follows the Interceptor which pulls up next to the Dauntless. The men thrown grappling hooks to it to hold the ships together. They all swing on ropes and walk across ramps to board the Dauntless and find the two trying to steal it.)
Seviathan: Search every cabin, every hold, down to the bilges!
(When everyone has boarded the Dauntless, Alastor and Vaggie come out from the front of the ship and swing over to the Interceptor unseen. Vaggie immediately cuts the ropes of the grappling hooks holding the ships together while Alastor takes the wheel. They begin to drift away and the boarding ramps fall into the water. Seviathan hears it and turns to see the other ship now moving away.)
Seviathan: (urgently) Sailors! Back to the Interceptor! Now!
(His men respond and rush to the edge of the ship. One sailor tries to swing back but badly misses and lands in the water. The Interceptor is now too far away to board. Alastor smiles and waves his hat at the Dauntless.)
Alastor: (mockingly) Thank you, Commodore, for getting us ready to make way! We'd have had a hard time of it by ourselves!
(Some soldiers open fire at them. Alastor and Vaggie take cover as they get further away. Seviathan marches up to the upper deck and turns to Blitzo.)
Seviathan: Set top sails and clear up this mess.
Blitzo: With the wind a quarter astern we won't catch them-
Seviathan: I don't need to catch them, just get them in range of the long nines.
(Blitzo is surprised but gives the order to the men.)
Blitzo: Hands, come about. Run out the guns!
(They prepare the cannons and a helmsman takes the wheel to turn the ship.)
Blitzo: We're to fire on our own ship, sir?
Seviathan: (sternly) I'd rather see her at the bottom of the ocean than in the hands of a pirate.
(The helmsman tries to turn the wheel but it doesn't work.)
Helmsman: Commodore! He's disabled the rudder chain, sir.
(Down in the water, Stolas and his crew see the hull of the Dauntless loom over them.)
Stolas: (frightened) Abandon ship!
(They all jump out as the rowboat is capsized by the ship. Now they have no way to catch them or shoot them to stop them from escaping. Seviathan can't believe he'd been outsmarted by a pirate who succeeded in stealing a ship with only one other helping him and without even putting up a fight. Blitzo on the other hand, can't help but admire what Alastor managed to do.)
Blitzo: (impressed) That's got to be the best fucking pirate I've ever seen.
Seviathan: (humiliated) So it would seem...
(The defeated naval officers look on as the Interceptor sails away from Port Royal at top speed with its only two passengers on board.)
Yes, I did not recast Bootstrap Bill Turner since we know nothing about Vaggie's parentage and I couldn't think of anyone to be her parent. Oh, well.
Vaggie may be skeptical about Alastor, but she still loves Charlie enough that she's willing to join forces with him for her sake. Who knows, maybe in the actual show, Vaggie will have to enlist Alastor's help to save Charlie from danger and they'll end up making a surprisingly good team.
