Chapter 13: Hope Restored
(Charlie realizes that Vaggie hasn't returned from below deck with the medallion. She runs over to the hatch that's blocked by the fallen mast and sees her through it in the flooded hold.)
Charlie: Vaggie!
Vaggie: Charlie!
(She tries to pull the hatch open. Alastor notices the monkey with the medallion runs across the deck.)
Alastor: (alarmed) Monkey!
(He chases after it. Charlie fails to get the hatch open.)
Charlie: (scared) I can't move it!
(Two grab her and pull her away.)
Charlie: No! Vaggie!
Vaggie: (frightened) Charlie!
(She tries to pull herself up to the hatch but falls back in the water that has almost filled up the hold. The crew of the Black Pearl completely overrun the crew of the Interceptor and make them surrender. Alastor chases the monkey across the fallen mast to the Pearl and tries to grab the medallion when another hand grabs it first. Alastor stops and looks up at Pentious holding the medallion with the monkey on his shoulder.)
Pentious: (smiles) Why thank you, Al!
Alastor: (sarcastically) You're welcome.
Pentious: Not you. We named the monkey "Al".
(Al the monkey grins as Pentious raises the medallion and shouts triumphantly.)
Pentious: Our hope is restored, mates!
(The Pearl's crew cheers victoriously as they take the Interceptor's crew onboard as prisoners. Down below, as the water reaches her head, Vaggie takes a deep breath and submerges. She starts swimming around fast looking for a way out. In the gunpowder storage, Travis and Baxter light the trail of gunpowder leading to the pile of barrels and get out. Vaggie moves through the water, past the debris in her way and finds the hole where the water leaked in. The Pearl had gotten some distance away from the wrecked Interceptor and Pentious holds watches it with glee. Alastor's crew are tied up and Moxxie points his gun at them.)
Moxxie: (threateningly) Any of you fuckcrumbs so much as thinks the word "Parley", I'll have your guts for garters.
(Charlie breaks free and runs to the edge of the ship only to stop when the Interceptor explodes as the powder magazine had been lit. Pentious' crew laughs victoriously as the Interceptor sinks into the ocean while Alastor and his crew are shocked and Charlie is horrified.)
Charlie: Vaggie!
(She attacks Pentious and he easily restrains her.)
Charlie: You godless pirate!
Pentious: (menacingly) Welcome back, miss. You took advantage of our hospitality last time. It holds fair now you return the favor.
(He shoves her over to his men and they begin to harass her as she screams. Vaggie suddenly climbs up the side of the ship soaking wet.)
Vaggie: Pentious!
(Everyone turns their attention to her.)
Charlie: (relieved) Vaggie.
(Vaggie grabs a pistol off a barrel and aims it right at the captain.)
Vaggie: (sternly) She goes free!
Pentious: (annoyed) What's in your head, missy?
Vaggie: She. Goes. Free.
(He walks up to her unaffected by her threat.)
Pentious: You've only got one shot and we can't die.
(Vaggie glances at Alastor.)
Alastor: (whispers) Don't do anything stupid.
(She knows what she has to do. She stands up on the ship's rail.)
Vaggie: You can't. I can.
(She points the gun right at her head. Charlie panics a little and Alastor shakes his head.)
Alastor: (disappointed) Like that.
(Pentious and his crew are perplexed by her actions.)
Pentious: Who are you?
(Alastor runs up to him to try to end the confrontation.)
Alastor: (nervous) No one. She's no one. A distant cousin of my aunt's nephew twice removed. Lovely singing voice, though. Eunuch.
Vaggie: My name is Vaggie Turner. My father was Bootstrap Bill Turner. His blood runs in my veins.
(Pentious and the others look at her with intrigue. Alastor bows his head in shame and walks away.)
Millie: (stunned) She's a spitting image of ol' Bootstrap Bill come back to haunt us!
(Vaggie glares at Pentious and keeps holding the gun to her.)
Vaggie: I'm the only chance you've got. On my word, do as I say, or I'll pull this trigger and be lost to the sea and you'll never be free of your curse.
(Pentious knows she has him where she wants him. But he hides his fear and calmly negotiates with her.)
Pentious: Name your terms, Miss Turner.
Vaggie: Charlie goes free!
Pentious: (nods) Yes, we know that one. Anything else?
(Alastor looks at her and silently but desperately points to himself. Vaggie ignores him and instead looks at the others behind him.)
Vaggie: And the crew, the crew are not to be harmed.
(Alastor is once again disappointed in her. Pentious steps forward.)
Pentious: (grins) Agreed.
(Later, the Pearl is anchored near a small island. Charlie is forced onto a plank sticking out over the edge. The pirates point their swords at her and urge her to jump off. Vaggie is held by some of them and struggles to break free.)
Vaggie: (enraged) Pentious, you lying asshole! You swore she'd go free!
Pentious: (harshly) Don't dare impugn me honor, lass! I agreed she'd go free, but it was you who failed to specify when or where! (laughs evilly) I'm so evil!
(They put a gag across Vaggie's mouth. Pentious walks up to Charlie.)
Pentious: Though it does seem a shame to lose something so fine, so I'll be having that dress back before you go.
(Charlie strips off the dark red dress they gave her. Alastor turns to the pirate holding him.)
Alastor: I always liked you.
(The pirate just growls at him. Charlie throws the dress at Pentious.)
Charlie: (infuriated) Goes with your black heart.
Pentious: (jokingly) Oh, it's still warm.
(He steps back and tosses it to one of his men. They continue to urge her off the plank. She walks to the end and stares down into the water too hesitant to jump. She turns to face Vaggie and they stare worryingly at each other. After a moment, Vortex steps forward.)
Vortex: (impatient) Too long!
(He slams his foot down on the plank and shakes it. Charlie loses her balance and falls in the water. The pirates laugh and Vaggie becomes sad. Alastor pretends to laugh with them until they shove him forward towards the plank. He turns to Pentious.)
Alastor: (nervous) I really rather hoped we were past all this.
(Pentious puts his arm around him and grins.)
Pentious: (slyly) Alastor, Alastor... Did ya not notice? That be the same little island that we made you governor of on our last little trip.
Alastor: I did notice.
Pentious: Perhaps you'll be able to conjure up another miraculous escape. But I doubt it. (draws his sword) Off you go.
(Alastor steps onto the plank hesitantly.)
Alastor: (insistently) Last time you left me a pistol, with one shot.
Pentious: By the powers, you're right. Where be Alastor's pistol? Bring it forward.
(A pirate hands him Alastor's belongings. His pistol, sword, compass, but not his hat. Alastor sees Charlie in the water swimming to the island and turns back to Pentious.)
Alastor: Seeing as there's two of us, a gentleman would give us a pair of pistols.
Pentious: (tauntingly) It'll be one pistol, as before, and you can be the gentleman and shoot the lady and starve to death yourself!
(He tosses his stuff into the water. Alastor goes wide-eyed and dives in after it. He swims past some fish and grabs his stuff laying on a rock. He then swims for the surface and follows Charlie to the shore as the Black Pearl begins to sail away.)
