Chapter Two
"And so that's my story," Harry said tiredly. He had doing his best NOT to think about Sirius all day and now he was feeling even more emotionally raw than just telling his life's story would have.
"Hell of a thing to believe," Danny Hebert said. "If I hadn't seen the light show and you summoning that hawk I'd never have believed it."
Said Hawk chose that moment to let out a cry. Harry nodded to it before letting it out the back door from the kitchen. "Go hunt, find me in the morning," he told the bird before turning to the Heberts.
"I can't say as I approve of you going out and fighting crime," Danny told his daughter. "But I understand wanting to help people. I'd feel more comfortable if you joined the Wards, though. They can give you the support you need."
Taylor just had a stubborn look on her face. One Harry knew all too well. "Problem is, for those of us who feel like teachers and the like failed them... it gives us a dim view of authority figures," he said softly. Taylor looked at him with a furrowed brow before nodding and looking away.
"Still, your dad has a point," Harry said with a shrug. "I've pretty much adopted the view of 'give them a chance until they fail me.'"
"You said you could help Taylor out?" Danny said as he pulled his daughter into a hug.
"Yeah," Harry said – perking up at the change in subject. "I'll need to spend some time gathering mana. Call it a week if I can find all the colors I need."
"Colors?" Taylor asked.
"Mana comes in five colors. White which is the color of Order, Protection and the Sun. You can find that in open fields. Green is the color of life and wilderness and can be obtained through forests. Blue is the color of the mind, logic, and control, and can be drawn from islands. Red is the color of passion, independence, and creation – found in mountains. Finally there is Black – the color of death, decay, and domination. That you get from swamps. Some places can offer more than a single color – like the Boat Graveyard which produces either Blue or Black - and some offer colorless mana. You get that kind of mana from urban areas, factories, power-plants, or by manually filtering the coloring out of colored mana. Since all Earths are part of the Mandala, it takes a week for these lands to generate enough mana for me to use. Outside the Mandala it takes a day," Harry explained.
"What can you do with this mana? How can you help Taylor?" Hebert asked.
"I can use a single white mana to give her 'Holy Strength' – which is more defensive than offensive. On the flip side, for a single black mana I can give her 'Unholy Strength' which is the opposite. Personally I'd give her both. For a single red, I can boost her reflexes beyond human levels. A single green would give her the ability to scale surfaces like a spider," Harry said before pausing a bit.
"Actually, if you can find someone good at tech stuff to give her some sort of webshooters, I can pretty much turn her into a copy of Spiderman," Harry said with a grin.
"Who's Spiderman?" Both Heberts asked.
"You don't know Spiderman? You don't have comic books here – Spiderman, The X-Men, Superman, Green Lantern?"
"We have Superman and Green Lantern, but not the other two. We also have Spawn, Hellboy, Mystery Men, and The Watchmen," Danny said – having been a bit of a comic geek when he was younger.
"Hm. Interesting bit of divergence there. I can't say that my Earth didn't have any of those, as I only read my cousin's comics after he threw them away and the only ones he read were the four I just asked about," Harry said with a shrug.
"Anyway, Spiderman had super-reflexes and agility, was stronger than a normal human, could cling to walls, and he invented webshooters to let him swing from building to building and tie up criminals," he explained. "Other than the webshooters and his danger sense, I can give Taylor all of that."
"Sounds like he was a Brute and Tinker," Taylor commented. "And while swinging on weblines sounds cool, flight would grant better mobility."
"One blue mana and I can make you fly. Maybe call yourself 'Dragonfly' or something," Harry offered.
"Better than Skitter, though I'd probably need to rethink my costume," Taylor agreed.
"Speaking of which, I believe you promised to show me," Harry teased – getting Taylor to blush.
"Um, I'll just go get it," she answered meekly before fleeing the room.
"Do I need to worry about my daughter's virtue?" Danny asked in a deadpan tone.
"Not really. I really don't know how long I'll be sticking around and I don't have much experience with girls to be honest," Harry said and he shrank back in his chair.
"Good," was all Danny said as he sipped his cocoa.
A few minutes later Taylor returned dressed in a black bodysuit with some armored reinforcement in places, and yellow eye lenses in her mask. Her black curly hair was free to hang loose behind her. "How do I look?" she asked – her voice slightly distorted by a readily available voice changer.
"Like a super-villain, honestly," Harry said before wincing at his lack of tact.
"Yeah, that's scary as hell, dear," Danny agreed.
Harry reached over and put his hand on Taylor, copying the pattern of her costume and adding to the pattern he already had for her – happy that it didn't increase the mana cost of her pattern. "Luckily you have me. If you wanna be 'Dragonfly' I can add metallic green and blue as well as dragonfly wings," Harry offered the clearly dejected girl. "But that'll have to be in a few days. Like I said, I don't have the mana."
"Taylor's out of school and I have vacation time saved up. We can take a road trip – give you a chance to collect the mana you need and that'd let Taylor get used to, well, her upgrades I guess you'd call them," Danny Hebert offered.
"That sounds absolutely brilliant," Harry said before letting out a yawn. "Now if you'll excuse me, I need to track down a hotel."
"The couch has a hideaway bed, you can stay the night," Taylor offered – giving her dad a 'look.'
"That's a great idea," Danny said with a nod. "You got get changed into your pajamas and grab the bedding and I'll get the hideaway set up."
Harry thought about protesting, but honestly a hideaway bed would probably be more comfortable than the bed of some cheap hotel. "Alright, but I insist on making breakfast," he offered.
"If you can actually cook you can stay as long as you like," Danny joked as he pulled the couch cushions off and set them on the recliner. "Can you slide the coffee table against the TV stand?"
Harry just moved the tabled silently, allowing Danny to pull the bed out from the couch. While they waited for Taylor to bring the bedding Harry asked about Danny's job and got the short explanation before she finally emerged from the hallway.
"Right. Well, if you need anything my room is the second door on the left, and the bathroom is the first door on the right. Given that tomorrow's Saturday, I think we can sleep in before doing any running around tomorrow," Danny said.
"G'nite Danny, Taylor," Harry said.
"Goodnight, Harry." "Harry." Taylor and Danny said respectively.
Crawling in bed he found it was actually pretty comfortable. Staring at the ceiling with half-lidded eyes, he couldn't help but worry about Hermione, Luna, and Neville and how they were coping with his vanishing. His biggest worry was Sirius. Something was niggling at the back of his mind about the veil of death.
Sirius Black woke with a start as he found himself in an open field of grass. Frowning as he tried to remember just what had happened, it suddenly dawned on him. His bitch of a cousin had hit him with a stunner and he'd tumbled backwards - straight through the bloody 'Veil of Death.' And there was no sign of the Veil having a counterpart here – wherever here was.
"So if I'm dead, does this make this Heaven or Hell?" He wondered aloud as he unsteadily climbed to his feet – happy that his wand was in the grass next to him. Given how he was feeling, he could tell he'd been out for over a day. Looking around all he could see was rolling hills of dark green grass with several cows, and nearly clear, blue skies. Taking a deep breath and feeling amazed at how clean the air was, he couldn't help but smile.
"This place doesn't suck enough to be hell, and no Lily or James means it can't he heaven. Guess I'm not dead yet," he said with a cocky grin as he swaggered in the direction of the tallest hill to get a look around. He needed to figure out where he was and how to get back to England so he could make sure Harry was safe.
Hermione let out a groan as the first thing she saw on waking was Luna Lovegood's face right next to hers. With that damned, vacant smile on her face. It was bad enough her chest still ached from Dolohov's flame-cutting-curse, and she had to put up with the smell and cold burning sensation of the ointment to heal said curse damage. The least the blonde could have done was have the decency to bring her some strong tea!
Hermione's thoughts were interrupted by Luna sitting up and pouring some tea into a cup from a thermos and handing it to her. Oh this was heavenly. A perfect cuppa!
"Thank you Luna," Hermione sighed almost contently. "What blend is this?"
"You're welcome, Hermione. It's just Earl Gray. We grow it and dry it at home so it's a lot fresher than what you're used to. How are you feeling?" Luna said in that odd, calm tone of hers.
"I'll be better when Harry has the courtesy to come visit!" Hermione hissed in annoyance. "He better not be feeling guilty over us getting hurt or Sirius dying."
"He is. But sadly we won't be seeing Harry for a long time. He's lost in the Mandala and doesn't know his way back home. We'll find Sirius before Harry finds us," Luna said sagely.
"What do you mean, Luna? I thought Sirius was dead? What's the Mandala? How do we get him out? Tell me!" Hermione demanded. Luna dropped a book on Hermione's lap. "Magic and the Multiverse: A Primer on Planeswalkers by Pandora Lovegood? Luna, what is this?"
"Harry has become more, Hermione. He's on a path we'll never be able to follow, but can only hope he comes and visits every now and again," the blonde explained before skipping off to raid the kitchens. Her sight told her there was a lovely pudding to be found.
Hermione could only stare as the blonde left, feeling completely flabbergasted and confused. Finally she turned to the book and started reading. Oh please don't let this be true, she thought to herself as she read.
Harry woke the next morning feeling refreshed. Mentally checking the Urban Sprawl and Boat Graveyard he nodded as he realized that yes, they would in fact need a week to replenish. Rolling out of bed he quickly used the bathroom before checking the time. Nodding at the fact it was closer to lunch time than breakfast time, he started digging through the fridge and pulling things out to make omelets he started slicing, dicing and chopping things while the skillet heated up.
Hearing activity behind him, he took a quick glance and saw a mussy-haired Taylor and a bleary-eyed Danny. Giving them both a nod, he continued his ingredient prep before saying "I didn't want to mess with your coffee pot. You might want to get that going."
Danny nodded and went to stand but Taylor beat him to it, as she just walked over and started getting that ready to go. Danny just amused himself watching his daughter not-so-subtly checking out their guest. Then he frowned a bit as he realized his little girl was growing up.
Harry made short work of cooking the omelet filling in one skillet and the omelet itself in another, before flipping it, adding the cheese and filling, then folding it before transferring it to a plate and starting on the next one. He gave Taylor the first one and Danny the second before starting on his own.
"Don't stand on ceremony, eat while it's warm," Harry told them - seeing Taylor hadn't started eating yet and Danny seemed to be waiting as well.
"This is amazing!" Taylor said after she had taken a bite of hers and making an almost moaning sound of pleasure. "Where'd you learn to cook?"
"My relatives weren't the nicest of people, and if I wanted to eat I had to make myself useful," he answered dismissively.
He didn't see Danny and Taylor frown at each other.
"So what do you kids want to do today?" Danny asked finally breaking the silence.
"I had planned on finding a map to see what kind of land was nearby," Harry said as he finished cooking his omelet and went to join the Heberts. Danny saw his coffee was done perking so he got up to pour himself a cup.
"Taylor also had mentioned the possibility of making a new wand. I might be able to make a staff if I can get the right materials. Though where I'm going to find the equivalents of dragon heart-string or unicorn hair is beyond me," Harry said before starting in on his food. "If I had patterns for either creature it'd be a different story. Same deal if I could get my hands on a hair growing potion, I could use my own hair and some of my blood."
"Why do you need those things?" Taylor asked curiously – a little disappointed that she wouldn't be getting to see dragons or unicorns.
"Wands and staves are wood from certain types of trees that have have a hole cut from the middle. That groove is filled with a core. The wizard who'd made my wand usually used the heart string of a dragon, the hair of a unicorn, or the tail-feather of a phoenix. Wands are better for finesse but far more difficult for someone who doesn't know what they are doing. We learned the basic process of making staves in History of Magic class and I'd read a book on wand lore one summer as I bored to tears," Harry explained.
"I honestly wouldn't know where to go about getting the materials for something like that, but it occurred to me last night that the Boardwalk might be a source of blue mana," Danny said. "It's right on the beach and it's a major tourist location."
"It's a couple of miles north of the Boat Graveyard where I met you," Taylor added
"You had my attention at the fact it's a beach and it's far enough from the Boat Graveyard it should count as it's own mana source," Harry said with a smile. "Are there any power plants where we can get a tour? Those count as colorless mana."
"Not in Brockton Bay," Danny said. "Anyway, Taylor, take him to the Boardwalk then the Market. Harry will need enough clothes for a week and some camping gear – you said you summoned some cash, right? I'm not entirely comfortable with you basically counterfeiting money but as long as you don't make a habit of it I don't see the harm. Let me get my vacation time set up and we can head for White Mountain National Forest starting tomorrow – and depending on how close we need to get, maybe Green Mountain as well."
"For a mountain? I just need to be over it. Probably wouldn't even need to leave the car, really," Harry said with a shrug. "Forests might be tricky though. Not sure how much time I need to spend in each bit to be able to claim it."
"Sounds like we have a plan then," Danny said before finishing up his breakfast. "You kids go have fun. I should be back in time for supper. We'll order pizza from Paizano's"
The two teens made idle chit chat as they walked to the Boardwalk. Taylor was telling Harry about various bits of history – specifically the cape scene while Harry shared stories of Hogwarts that he hadn't included in the previous night's telling. As they walked, Harry would pause to scan various vehicles so he could take in their patterns – just in case he needed a getaway vehicle.
"Why do you keep pausing to look at cars?" Taylor asked after the fifth time he stopped.
"I'm copying their patterns so I can summon one if I need to," Harry replied. "Remind me to ask your dad for driving lessons. And I need to find someone to teach me how to ride a motorcycle as well."
"One of dad's friends has a Harley he rides to work on nice days. I bet he can teach you," Taylor said. "How much does it cost to summon a car?"
"Normal vehicle would just be a single mana, and even then I could pack the trunk of a car or bed of a truck with basic supplies with just that single mana. Pretty sure a tank would cost at least three mana, possibly with one of them being white," Harry said.
"Sounds like you could equip an entire army," Taylor said in amazement.
"If I had the mana, yes," Harry replied.
"Must be frustrating with each mana taking a week to recharge," Taylor guessed.
"Yeah," Harry said as he ran his fingers through his hair. "I figure after I get you upgraded and outfitted, I'll start hopping through the mandala. Though I'm seriously giving thought to alternating between the Mandala and the various worlds that exist outside of it because it's going to be tedious having to collect seven times the amount of mana sources just to be able get anything done on a daily basis."
Taylor just nodded, hiding her feelings that she wished Harry would stick around. Especially as she wished it was her fingers running through his hair. "After you leave, will you be able to come back here?"
Harry nodded. "Yep. Having lands to tap kinda leaves a trail through the Blind Eternities. Though following that trail will take some practice. I might accidentally wind up on Earth Aleph instead of Bet until I can get the hang of it."
"Well, as long as you visit on occasion," Taylor finally said after a short pause.
Harry just smiled awkwardly before changing the subject. "Oh look who's back," he said pointing upwards. The hawk he'd summoned the night before circled overhead.
Taylor sighed in exasperation. Why were boys so difficult to understand?
"He doesn't look like much," Rebecca Costa-Brown (AKA, Alexandria) said dismissively.
"None the less, everything points to him being cause of the timeline rewriting itself. The future changed by his arrival. Somehow, Zion is dead – or at the least so lost he cannot come back," Contessa countered. "And much like Zion, his very presence renders me blind."
The pair were watching the two teens from a security monitor. Rebecca took a sip of her coffee and regarded the pair for a moment before speaking. "So what do we do?"
"Keep an eye on them," Contessa instructed. "And hope that he decides to leave sooner rather than later."
"What about taking him out? Or recruiting him? What threat level should he be classified as?"
"Inadvisable and inadvisable. Designate him as an S-Class pending further observation. Tell your agents to observe and report but do not engage unless necessary," Contessa instructed. "Inform the Wards and Protectorate as well."
"And the girl? Do you still want her alienated when she goes active?" Rebecca asked.
Contessa tilted her head to the side as she thought about it. "With Zion gone, that path is no longer necessary. Try to get her into the Wards, but don't be aggressive about it. She looks up to Armsmaster. Tell him to be diplomatic in his approach."
"Armsmaster. Diplomatic. You aren't mixing whiskey with your coffee again, are you?"
All over Brockton Bay, certain people got an email or text a message with a photo of a young man who had messy black hair and green eyes. The image was clearly taken from one of the rare colorized CCTV cameras there were being put up everywhere. The message simply said 'Potential S-Class Threat. Observe and report but do not engage."
"Coming here was a good idea," Harry said when they reached the boardwalk and he connected to the land. "One blue mana, as expected."
Seeing some tourists riding ATVs up and down the beach, he acquired the patterns for the vehicles as he figured they'd be useful on undeveloped worlds for crossing ground quickly.
"Well now that that's, done, let's hit a couple of shops for what you need then we can head for the Market," Taylor grinned before grabbing his hand and dragging him towards the first store.
"Why do I feel like I have made a huge mistake?" Harry asked himself.
Luckily Harry was able to convince Taylor not to go too crazy, as he could just conjure what he needed. He did scan the patterns for stuff he liked, and would up spending about half of his money on more durable clothes and camping gear than what he'd initially conjured the previous morning. By the time they'd finished they were laden with bags of stuff.
"We didn't think this through... we don't have dad's truck with us so we'll have to haul this stuff around," Taylor sighed. "That or we'll need to backtrack to the house to drop this off before walking to the Market."
"Or I can use the one blue mana I have access to place a space-expansion charm on the backpack and we can dump everything in it," Harry said with a smirk as he went over the spells he had access to.
"Like that magical tent you were telling me about?" Taylor asked – referring to Harry's retelling of the Quidditch World Cup.
"That's a wizarding space, which is more like a pocket dimension. Harder to make as you need to know the runes to do it. But non-permanent space-expansion charms are taught in fifth year. The permanent version isn't taught until seventh year, but I can fake it well enough," Harry said with a shrug as they ducked into an empty side-road.
"More planeswalker bullshit?" Taylor teased.
"You know it," Harry said with a grin – pulling on his mana and weaving it into the pattern needed to do what he needed it to do. Once the spell was complete, Harry and Taylor quickly transferred the shopping bags into the backpack which he then put on.
"Isn't that heavy?" Taylor asked as they exited the alley.
"Not really, there's a mass-negation effect tied into the expansion charm that's directly proportional to the power put into the charm. I kind of overpowered the charm a bit, so really I could pack your entire house into my bag – assuming that I could fit it through the flap. Of course, to be able to find things I need I had to add an 'always on top' charm as well."
"Oh look, the creepy little nerd has a creepy little boyfriend," a voice taunted. Turning to look the two teens saw a trio of girls about their age stop ten feet away.
The first was a tall, slender dark-skinned girl with straight black hair. She was obviously a runner. Harry could tell she was also a para-human. Shadow Stalker. One black, one blue. Can enter a shadow state to pass through solid objects and is vulnerable to electricity. Comes equipped with light armor and a crossbow.
The second was a curvy redhead who looked like she stepped off the set of a movie. Harry didn't see anything special about her so he looked over at the third – a shorter, less developed white girl with shoulder-length brown hair that was cute in the way that a small child is rather than being cute in a date-able sort of way.
"Harry Potter, meet Sophia Hess, Emma Barnes, and Madison Clements," Taylor said without feeling. "I go to school with them."
"Charmed I'm sure," Harry said in a disgusted tone. Between the way they had taunted Taylor and carried themselves, and the way his friend introduced them, Harry could tell these were the local 'mean girls.' Bullies. Harry hated bullies.
All three girls frowned when they saw Harry's face – though for different reasons. Emma and Madison wondered just why the hell a cute guy was hanging around a creep like Taylor Hebert while Sophia recognized him from the message she'd gotten on her cellphone. As she was a member of the Wards – the team made up of teenage capes – she was one of the ones the BOLO order had been sent to.
This guy is an S-Class threat? He don't look like much. And what the fuck has Hebert been saying about us behind our backs? Sophia thought angrily. I'm going to do worse than lock her in a locker filled with used pads when I see her next!
Almost as if he was reading her mind the Potter kid's eyes narrowed on her. "I regretfully must say we don't have the time to get better acquainted, but there's much to do and much to see before the shadows get too long," he said with a knowing smile. " Maybe when we're back in the area in a week we can meet up and have a nice stalk."
Sophia's eyes widened as she caught on – this guy knew her cape identity. Knowing she needed to break away so she could report this she loudly made a scoffing noise. "Whatever. Let's go, I've got better shit to do," she said as she tried very hard not to run like a dog with her tail between her legs.
Coil sat back as he looked over the message forwarded from his work computer in the local PRT headquarters via a tinkertech transmitter he'd smuggled into the building. Studying the boy's face a moment, he looked at the boy's entry in the PRT data base.
"Get Tattletale in my office immediately. My pet as well," he ordered his secretary.
"Yes sir!" The minion said before heading for the smaller office outside of his own. It was twenty minutes later Lisa Wilbourn entered in costume along with an emaciated young girl with dark circles under her eyes and sores on her arms caused by picked at the skin. Coil smiled under his mask as he recognized little Dinah Alcott's addiction to her 'candy' was progressing nicely.
Coil projected the file onto another monitor for the two girls to read. The file was being constantly updated had last been updated as of an hour ago – indicating the boy had observers. Interestingly enough at least one Thinker had been tasked to append analysis to the kid's file.
Subject: Anomaly
Real Name: Unknown
Sex: Male
Race: Caucasian
Age: 15 (Estimated)
Hair: Black
Eyes: Green
Power Level: S-Class*
*Based on incomplete information provided by a precog who wishes to remain anonymous.
WARNING: Do not attempt to engage subject. Observe and report only.
Anomaly estimated to have first appeared sometime after midnight on the 2nd of June, 2011 in Brockton Bay. Method of travel unknown. Point of origin believed to be Britain based on accent and language use. Facial recognition has not generated any matches to any known British citizens who have entered the country in the past 15 years. Anomaly wears clothing and a backpack of unknown manufacture and is believed to have a large quantity of cash.
At 7:02 on the 2nd of June, 2011 Anomaly entered a Burger King on 2nd and Pine where he ordered two breakfast sandwiches with a hashbrowns and large Coke. After eating Anomaly traveled eastward. At 12:17 Anomaly visitied a Dairy Queen and ordered a double cheeseburger and fries with a large Coke. Anomaly also got a milkshake to go before continuing eastward. At 12:58 Subject paused, tilted his head to the side, and immediately backtracked a half block before heading south to Brockton Bay Public Libary.
Tentative Analysis: Subject may have Thinker abilities, possibly even precognitive ones.
At 13:27 Subject entered Brockton Bay Public Library and spent two hours, seventeen minutes using the public internet terminal. Subject used the following search terms: "recent history," "recent important events," "recent important events of the last twenty years," "timeline of important events for the last twenty years," "Hogwarts," "Diagon Alley," "MCUSA," "Avada Kedavra", "Albus Dumbledore," "Voldemort," "Tom Marvolo Riddle," "Gelert Grindelwald."
Tentative Analysis: Subject is a Time Traveler or Dimensional Traveler. Significance of search terms excluding ones about 'important events' are unknown. Said search terms are now red-flagged.
At 17:45 Subject visited Fugly Bob's and requested the 'Fish and chips' to go. Subject was visibly disgusted by the taste of the food but still managed to eat it.
Tentative Analysis: Subject came from low-income household where food may not have been guaranteed and is used to eating low-quality food.
At 19:13 Subject reached Boat Graveyard and spent time talking to himself before being engaged by a teen girl. Based cellphone movement in the area, teen girl believed to be Taylor Hebert of Brockton Bay. Subject then followed Taylor Hebert to her home where he apparently spent the night with the girl and her father, one Daniel Hebert.
Tentative Analysis: Subject may have used Master powers to make the girl take him to her house. Recommend separating the girl from the Subject as soon as feasible and performing a rape kit. Also, Taylor Hebert was assaulted by fellow students at Winslow Highschool severely enough it was speculated that she may have possibly triggered. As Ms Hebert was catatonic at the time of her interview, it was never determined if she triggered or not. No follow-up was ever performed.
At 11:34 on June 3, 2011 Subject and Taylor Hebert left her house and began walking eastwards, though occasionally subject would pause to examine unoccupied or moving vehicles. Taylor Hebert exhibits signs of attraction in Subject. This reinforces previous Tentative Analysis.
Presently Subject and Taylor Hebert are at Brockton's Bay's Boardwalk and have spent two hours shopping for sufficient clothes, toiletries, and camping gear to last a week. No such gear was purchased by Ms Hebert.
Quickly reading through the file, Tattletale hacked into the different security cameras that were available so she could watch 'The Anomaly' as much as possible. With the poor video quality there wasn't much she could pick out that the Thinkers who'd written the profile hadn't already gathered.
"Wait, where did all of their bags go?" Tattletale asked as she pulled up a current video feed. The Anomaly was wearing the camping backpack he'd purchased but all of the rest of the bags were missing. The three observed as the two teens were confronted by three other teens. Hacking into the cellphone networks, she managed to turn the Hebert girl's cellphone into a audio spying device.
Dinah shivered as she felt how the future was shifting too rapidly to keep up. "Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus," she said before blood started to leak from her nose. "Meddle not in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger."
Coil frowned beneath his mask as his pet passed out. Before he could even ask, Tattletale translated for him. "Don't tickle sleeping dragons? What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means, we have to handle this extremely carefully. Follow him in your civilian identity as much as possible. Get a feel for his personality and find out if he has any immediate plans. Make sure the other Undersiders are nearby in case you need extraction. This has top priority," he said dangerously as both he and Tattletale went back to watching the teens.
"I don't think I've ever seen Sophia look scared like that before. And I've definitely never seen Emma or Madison not try to get in a parting shot," Taylor said in amazement.
"I'm an unknown quantity," Harry explained. "Bullies don't like dealing with unknowns. Especially ones that show no fear towards them. They'll either get physical or flee. My cousin Dudley and his little gang like to terrorize the neighborhood back in Little Whinning. A new kid a year or two older moved in, and Dudley's gang just didn't know how to handle him. Especially since he kept them from messing with the younger kids."
"I can see that," Taylor said with a nod. "And don't think I didn't notice what you did there. You stressed the word 'shadow' and you didn't say 'nice talk' – you said 'nice Stalk.' Is Sophia really Shadow Stalker?"
"She is indeed. Hero or villain?" Harry asked.
"She's supposed to be a hero," Taylor said bitterly. "She's in the Wards program."
"We can pop down to the library before we leave town and send an email. I'm sure someone in charge of the program would be interested in learning that one of their members is engaging in bullying," Harry said with a grin.
"There's an internet cafe over here. We can set you up with a fake email account to send the message," Taylor offered.
"Why create a fake account? It's not like I'm hiding from anyone. If they try to lock me up I can just open a gateway to the Blind Eternities. Plus, as a Planeswalker I can summon copies of anyone I can scan the patterns of – I just need them to get within twenty feet or so. So really if I get confronted by a bunch of capes they are only making me more powerful," Harry said with a cheeky grin.
"Assuming you have the mana to summon copies of all them," Taylor pointed out as she gave his arm a hard poke.
"Well, yeah, there is that," Harry admitted as they entered the Internet Cafe.
To Whome it May Concern:
My name is Harry Potter. I have a few unique gifts – one of which is the power to identify a cape's costumed identity if they are in their civilian guise. Imagine my surprise when I discovered one of the girls engaged in an ongoing bullying campaign against my friend was none other than Shadow Stalker!
Fix. The. Problem.
Unless you want Shadow Stalker unmasked? I'm sure the local news channels would love to know one of the Wards assaults civilians for shits and giggles when she's off the clock.
What else do your 'heroes' do when they aren't dressed in tights? Killing puppies? Molesting children?
Sincerely,
Harry James Potter
"So, what do you think?" Harry asked Taylor.
"Comes awfully close to breaking the truce, are you sure your planeswalking power will keep you from being Birdcaged?" Taylor asked worriedly as Harry clicked 'send.'
"If push come to shove, I'll just planeshift out," Harry assured her. "So... the Market?"
"Yeah let's get going. Might have to have dad come pick us up from the Market though," Taylor said with a nod as they left.
Rebecca Costa-Brown frowned as she read the email that had been forwarded to her from the public relations office. Then she forwarded it to the Thinkers she had collecting intel on the Anomaly before calling each of the Wards team-captains to report to her office immediately. As much as she was against submitting to the almost blackmail of this... boy, she knew that the media would be eager to jump on any bad press.
Not to mention the boy was right. She'd have to make a note to have all members of the Protectorate and the Wards evaluated for any other unseemly behavior they might get up to in their civilian identities. She quickly sent a reply email – figuring the kid was cocky enough that he wouldn't bother using a burner account.
Mister Potter. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. Rest assured that the problem will be rectified in short order. Please be advised that unmasking anyone is a matter that neither heroes nor villains take lightly and even threatening to do so can quickly see both sides working together to put you down.
Take that, you little shit, she thought venomously.
If she had been capable of feeling frustration, The Simurgh would have been screaming in rage. With the anomaly present she couldn't see the near future very well. And the far future had too many possibilities for her to make any definite plans. However, what she could see was that both of her brothers would be dead within the next year.
Not that warning them had done any good. Leviathan and Behemoth were creations of The Warrior and were rather lacking in any forward thinking ability. Sure they had cunning but really were little more than animals or machines following their programming. The very concept of something more powerful than The Entities was alien to them. And since she couldn't see exactly what would kill the other two Endbringers, she couldn't caution them to retreat once said presence showed up.
I need to wake up more of my siblings... but which ones?
That was the real question. Cthulhu was one of the Warrior's creations, as were Golgothan, Nidhogg and Terrasque. Each was more terrible and destructive than the next. They also needed to be seeded across the other Earths to ensure maximum data collection. Entropy wasn't going to defeat itself, after all.
No, her choices were limited to Tiamat – who could spawn copies of her enemies to fight them, Mammon who could summon your worsts nightmares to attack you with, Basilisk, who's very gaze could liquefy flesh, and The Fenrir was a wolf-like beast that could spawn copies of itself. Tiamat, Fenrir, and Mammon weren't front-line fighters. In fact, neither one needed to risk revealing their presence. Basilisk lacked that option.
With a mental nod The Simurgh made her decision. She'd start waking up The Fenrir now, and convince it to attack Iceland a month after Leviathan was killed. Two years after Behemoth died she'd awaken both Mammon and Tiamat - setting them on Rome and Baghdad respectively. She'd save the others for other Earths or if the number of capes grew too high.
AN: No one picked up the hidden reference in the last chapter, but Scion's death is what called people to start gaining Quirks in that particular part of the Mandala. I haven't personally read or watched My Hero Academia but I heard it's pretty good.
Also, big shout-out to dogbertcarrol for his feedback on chapter one and two, and ideas of how to make them better. I went back and expanded the scene with the genie a bit and tweaked things in the scene in Dumbledore's office.
Sirius Possibilities – a small collection of Omakes
Omake 1: I want to be the very best
Looking around all he could see was rolling hills of dark green grass with several strange looking cows, and nearly clear, blue skies.
As he walked, he noticed a few other oddities around him. They cows all looked pretty much the same and they had some thick, shaggy mane like a buffalo. They also had Three tails. The other oddity he noticed was a large purple rat thing with a weird tail.
The biggest oddity was the group of strange mouse... rabbit... things. They were bright yellow with long pointed ears and black stripes. They also had weird tails shaped like a lightning bolt. The purple rat got too close to the yellow mouse rabbit things and the mouse-rabbit shot a bolt of lightning at it.
"Where the bloody hell am I?"
Omake 2: Walking in Shadows Crossover (Story ID 3776911)
When Sirius came to he realized he was in a desert and the sun was starting to come up. "Shite, I've died and gone to hell," he groaned as he collected his wand from the ground and stood up. "At least I'm at next to the bloody damned road."
A quick cooling charm did very little to offset the intense heat, and rather than walk into the sun he decided to walk from it – following the road hoping that someone would stop and pick him up. It was nearly six hours later a dark green 1974 Chevy Nova pulled up next to him with the passenger side window down.
"Do you need help?" a young man who couldn't be any older than eighteen asked. If Sirius had to guess, the young man was a yank of all things.
"Are you death?" Sirius asked in a dry, raspy voice.
"Nope, just someone driving through the desert who thought you might like something cool to drink and a ride to someplace that wasn't hotter than Hell," the kid answered.
Sirius blinked a few times, not sure if he was hallucinating or not before finally replying, "That'd be great, thanks."
And thus began a grand adventure.
AN2: I've not quite finalized just where Sirius wound up, but am open to suggestions. Harry will eventually be visiting the place. Someday. If I get to it.
And yes, I've majorly tweaked the timeline for Worm (Taylor was supposed to have Triggered in January and Leviathan should have already attacked Brockton Bay. I've adjusted it so Taylor only triggered a month prior to the story's start and Leviathan's attack is somewhat delayed).
