Chapter Three
PPOV
"Boy! Watch your tone with my daughter and your language in front of my grandson!" Charlie said in a low voice.
Paul knew he messed up when he turned to see Bella's hurt expression.
"Dad, go on with Colin and I will talk with Paul," Bella gave her father a small smile and rubbed her fingers along the young child's cheek. Charlie gave Paul one more look that said he better not upset Bella anymore, before walking toward the parking lot.
"To answer your question Paul, yes I have a son. I will be glad to tell you the whole story, but to be honest I feel like you would have known the details had you kept in touch with me. Maybe I was wrong when I thought we actually had a friendship before college."
That stung, but Paul knew he deserved it. It was his fault that he built the enormous wall of distance between him and Bella.
"We have some time before we have to leave. Would you like to come take a walk with me and I will explain?" Paul nodded and followed her like a lost puppy. They walked a short distance before coming to a driftwood log and she sat with him following suit.
"There has been so much you have missed in my life. I don't know where to start honestly."
Bella became thoughtful for a few minutes before continuing. "During my second year at college, I was really lonely and missed my friends and dad. I became friends with a girl named Alice Cullen. We quickly became best friends and she introduced me to her family, including her brother Edward. Her family lived in Seattle and really became a second family to me. After a few weeks from first meeting him, Edward asked me out and we dated almost the full remainder of my time at college. He even proposed at the end of my junior year. Edward was completing his medical degree and during my senior year found out that he would be going to Chicago for his residency. The more I thought about moving that far away from my dad and the only home I have ever known, I knew deep in my heart that it wasn't going to work."
Looking out at the ocean, Bella had a wistful look on her face. Taking a deep breath she continued.
"I knew in my heart that being his wife was also not what I wanted either. Don't get me wrong, Edward is an amazing man and will be a wonderful husband and doctor, but he was not the one my soul cried out for."
Bella glanced at Paul with an emotion that he could not name.
"I sat down with Edward and explained how I felt. He gave me the sweetest smile and told me that he had been waiting for me to finally admit what he had long suspected. It was a load off my shoulders. We have stayed friends, so much so that Colin and I will be heading to Chicago to attend his wedding to his lovely fiancé Tanya. Actually, Colin will be their ring bearer."
She giggles to herself. Paul was sure the thought of her son playing a part in her ex-fiance's wedding was something to definitely laugh at.
"I knew I wanted to come home and make a difference. I wanted to help kids that possibly didn't have a chance and give them a shot. Coming home after college, I had already gotten the position at the elementary school and worked hard to get funding to start the tutoring program here in La Push. I have volunteers that donate their time and we have multiple fundraisers for supplies, educational equipment, and hiring specialists like counselors or speech and learning therapists. The new community center that you are creating will go to good use as we currently have to meet in the cafeteria at LPH. The new space will give us desks and the ability to divide in to smaller groups with less distractions."
Bella gave him a huge smile and Paul knew then that if he hadn't done anything right in his life before that moment, creating this community center was definitely the best thing he had ever done.
"I tutor many students from both Forks and La Push ranging from elementary aged to high school students. I even have some who have gotten into community college that need assistance with papers or study techniques. That is where Colin comes in."
Paul gave her a puzzled look and Bella gave a slight chuckle.
"Three years ago, I was tutoring a high school girl named Bree Littlesea. She is a very bright young girl, but with youth comes mistakes. Finding herself pregnant was the last thing she needed or wanted in the beginning of her senior year. She didn't want to have an abortion, but also knew she was too young to keep the baby because she was accepted into WSU on a full scholarship with the tutoring programs assistance. Her boyfriend was also heading to UDUB on a football scholarship. She didn't want to put the baby up for adoption without knowing he would go to a good home."
Paul could sense where this was going but was honestly shocked at Bella's words.
"Other than helping our community and teaching, the only thing in life that I ever wanted was to fall in love, get married and have a family. Lots of beautiful children, because I know the loneliness of being an only child. So, I looked into the requirements of adoption and in the state of Washington a single parent can adopt after completing a home study program. Dad really helped and soon everything was in place. Bree allowed me to be in the room to witness Colin's birth, which had to be the most magical moment of my life." Paul felt such a deep emotion at the pure adoration he saw on Bella's face in that moment.
"We still stay in touch and I send her pictures. She is in her junior year and will be moving to California after her senior year to begin law school. Her plans are to become a lawyer focusing on Tribal Law. She now has her future with plans to give back and I have a little boy who brings me more joy than I could have ever imagined."
They sat silently for a while, each in their own thoughts. Soon they heard Sam yell to them that it was time to head out, having reservations for dinner before hitting the club.
As she rose, Paul's hand shot out and grabbed her wrist halting her steps.
"I am sorry Bella for being rude earlier, but also for not staying in touch. I know tonight might not be the best time to talk, but I hope we can get together and catch up."
She smiled down to him.
"I would really like that Paul."
He rose and they began to walk toward the group. Paul knew he had some work to do to get back in her good graces, but it was cemented in his soul that he was determined to make that happen.
