Chapter 1
Amanda Rollins grew up in a small town of Loganville, Georgia. Her family life was anything but normal and loving. Her father Jim was an alcoholic and had a gambling addiction. Her mother Beth was often beaten by him in his drunken rages. Amanda was the oldest child and she had a younger sister named Kim who was always in trouble.
Amanda didn't have as many troubles as her sister, but she lacked discipline and sometimes had trouble with authority. She loved her family, but kept them at a distance. She wanted something different out of life. As a teenager she worked hard and often kept 2 or 3 jobs. She hid her money and saved it for college. Along the way she picked up some bad habits of gambling but it actually helped her flip her checks into large sums. Gambling was illegal, but she didn't care. Amanda was reckless and it would continue as she got older.
She put herself through college and earned a bachelor's degree in forensic science. At the young age of 21 she joined the Atlanta Police Department. She could have moved up the ranks faster, but she lacked discipline. The one thing that helped her was, Amanda was a charmer. It only took flashing those baby blues and she got the connections. Amanda actually wasn't that kind of girl at all. She was smart, really smart. She watched her mother get assaulted and even raped by her father, she decided to join the Atlanta SVU unit. She really wanted to make a difference.
She was assigned to the 8th Precinct under Captain Sam Reynolds. Even though he had a wife and young daughter, he flirted with Amanda a lot. He was the reason she became a detective. Amanda knew he was married and never took advantage of his flirtatious behavior. She kept it strictly professional. Their Deputy Chief was worse. He was always trying to get her attention and he was older and married also. Working with the two of them wasn't what she wanted to do.
One day, Captain Reynolds received a call from Captain Don Cragen in New York City. He listened to the problem over the phone and caught Detective Rollins walking by, "Yes Sir, I actually have a detective that is familiar with that case." He waved Amanda in the office. "If you think it's our guy from the database, I'll send her right up. Yes Sir, we'll be in touch." Amanda came in and waited for him to hang up, "Yes Captain?"
He grabbed an old file and never looked at Amanda, "Remember that case, when you first got here? The unidentified white male that was following young women. He started simple with physical attacks and escalated to rape?" Amanda closed her eyes, it was one of her first cases and he got away. "Of course, the rapist that dropped off the face of the Earth." Captain Reynolds kept looking at the files, still not looking up, "Well it looks like he may have dropped back and in New York. A guy with the same yin yang tattoo attacked a dancer. Captain Cragen called asking for help." He finally looked up, "You wanted out of Atlanta, here is chance Rollins. I told Cragen you were one of my best and he's short handed, consider this your interview. Good Luck."
Amanda had requested a transfer, but not just to another precinct, she couldn't stay in Atlanta, too much had happened. "Thank you Captain Reynolds." Amanda was on the next flight to New York. She went straight to the 16th Precinct and knocked on Captain Cragen's door, "Excuse Sir, I'm Amanda Rollins." Captain Cragen was much older than Captain Reynolds, but older didn't make Amanda exactly comfortable. He stood up and extended his hand, "Captain Reynolds had great things to say about you. Welcome to New York. Have a seat."
Cragen read Amanda's file before she came. He didn't know what happened in Atlanta, but he did know it had to be something. Reynolds had said great things, but Cragen knew this transfer was unorthodox. He passed her the file, "Thank you sir, but I read it on the plane. Sounds like our guy. All the way down to the victim's statement, that he told her over and over, "Tell me you love me, Mommy."
Cragen was impressed. Amanda looked around, "Is it always like this? I mean I won't use the Q word." Everyone knew it was a silent law never to say quiet around a squad room or shit would really hit the fan. "We are short staff. I currently only have a Sergeant and two senior detectives, which one of them is being promoted in less than a month. Detective Olivia Benson, she's been with us a while." Amanda smiled, "I know who she is, she spoke at a conference when I was just starting. I've always admired her."
Amanda knew exactly who she was, she was the main reason Amanda picked New York. She wanted to work with her, because she wanted to be as good as her. Cragen smiled and couldn't help but hope this could bring Olivia out of her funk. She was a great detective, but losing Elliott after all those years, she was having trouble rebounding. "Amanda, would you be ok here? This isn't Atlanta." Amanda already liked Captain Cragen, he didn't seem like her other commanding officers. She could tell things could be different here. "Yes Sir! I have to be ok."
Just as they finished talking Detective Benson and Detective Tutuola walked the suspect in and put him in a room. Amanda was excited and jumped up, quickly following Cragen. "Detectives, this is Detective Amanda Rollins from Atlanta, she believes this is a suspect from several cases. Olivia had a smirk on her face, "I don't see it. Someone jumping from Atlanta to here, doesn't make sense. Sorry you should head back." Cragen and Detective Tutuola looked at Olivia, "What do you think there is connection?"
Amanda didn't back down and started going down the list of everything in her head and threw the file on the table. "I think I better stick around." They both hid their laugh, "Fin is something funny?" Fin held his hands up, "Nah Liv, you got it." She rolled her eyes when Amanda asked, "Captain, let me talk to him. I know how he operates." Cragen sent in Liv and Fin, "You hang with me kid, let them try." Liv laughed and Cragen knew he needed to get a hold on her, because she would be staying."
As they questioned Gabriel Thomas, who knew he hadn't done anything and openly agreed to talk without a lawyer, Amanda started to think she was wrong. Even when he put himself in every location at every date, Amanda thought it wasn't right. "Captain, it doesn't make sense. The personality doesn't fit."
In the meantime his wife sent in a lawyer, because she didn't understand what was going on. They agreed to a DNA test and when it came back a match he was booked and sent to the tombs. Amanda started digging deep in the files, looking for anything that may help. "What is it Rollins? First you are completely sure, now we have DNA, solid proof and you're saying it's not him. Captain, where did you find her?"
Fin shook his head and offered to help. Captain Cragen gave Amanda a shot, "Amanda, do you think something is off?" She shook her head, "Fin, Amanda head to talk to the wife, see what she thinks." Olivia watched in shock as they went out of the squad room. "Captain, I'm a senior detective and you send her?" Cragen looked up, "My office now!" Olivia hung her head, "If you're a senior detective, then damn it act like it. You're going to be Sergeant Benson in less than a month. Munch is going to retire and if you plan on being my number 2, you better get it together. Liv, I know you miss him, but you're too good for this. Amanda is staying and I was hoping to team you two up, but not like this. I can't and that disappoints me."
While Olivia was getting her ass handed to her, which was well overdue. Fin and Amanda got the information they needed. They found out that one of the dates didn't match. It turns out Gabriel's wife had a miscarriage on one of the weekends of a rape, "Fin it couldn't have been him. Look at the notes from the hospital. What are we looking at?" They called the precinct and Fin asked Liv to keep looking for something, anything because Amanda was on to something. Olivia found out Gabriel was adopted. And she also saw that one victim mentioned a broken tooth and a scar, "Guys, he doesn't have a broken tooth or a scar." Amanda started thinking hard, "Guys could we be looking for a twin?"
They found the birth mother, Fin and Amanda went to see her. "Yeah what's this about, I had twin boys over 30 years ago." The birth mother confirmed. "Have you ever had any contact with them?" Fin asked while the mother smoked her cigarette, "Only one of them Brian. He had a rough life, completely different from his brother. The last time he came, I told him not to come back, I gave him up once." Amanda thought she was a piece of trash.
They headed back to the squad room with the information. Amanda finally met Sergeant Munch, "We're looking for Brian Smith. He likes blondes, works as a janitor in Central Park." Munch said. Olivia looked at Amanda, "Can you bait him?" Amanda shook her head, "Guys I can do this. We can catch him." They needed to appear to release Gabriel to get Brian to attack. Amanda went through the park getting his attention and away in isolation. This was dangerous, Fin and Olivia were close in hiding. They had planned out where Amanda would lead him. Amanda went too far and Fin and Olivia lost contact. Olivia looked at Fin, "Damnit Amanda!" Luckily Fin got him, before he reached his knife and Amanda was safe.
She got to question him and used her charm to get him. She had outsmarted him. Brian Smith was booked and Cragen had to explain to Gabriel that he had a twin brother that set him up, because his life wasn't happy. Amanda's reward was a pile of paperwork. She was happy to fill it out and happy to be away from Atlanta. Olivia came into the squad room, "Rollins?" She swallowed hard and was nervous, "Yes Detective Benson?" Olivia cracked a smile, "Good work!" Amanda smiled, "But the next time you disobey orders, it will be your ass. Oh and welcome to New York."
