A/N So this is the first Castle fanfiction I have actually written. Enjoy :)
Come up to meet you
She never in a million years would have thought that the day would come where she would have to move on from him. But still sitting on the familiar set of swings she faced the other now vacated swing next to hers. Trying to grasp the reality of what just happened. He loves her, she thought with a shattering heart and she loves him, so why did they break up? The cold numbness is starting to creep its way into her heart, tears brimming her eyes but aside from a few lone tears she doesn't cry, won't break down, not yet.
Admittedly she knew what was going to happen the moment she saw him sit down, his posture was tense, his stare seemed hard and cold barely even looking her way.
"We both deserve more" His statement rang true to her however the tone he used, told her in his mind they wouldn't find 'more' with each other.
She met him with the intentions of fighting for them, to right the wrongs between them.
Instead, she messed up...
"Beckett", she saw him lock his jaw, still not looking at her, "this isn't working for either of us"
Mustering him in disbelief she couldn't believe what he just told her, he was still sitting stoic on his swing, seemingly fidgeting with something small in his hands. Or maybe it was just a nervous habit.
"Beckett?, Kate?", he was looking at her now and he looked just as devastated as she felt, he was urging her to say something.
What changed? she wanted to ask, yell at him, instead: "Why, why now?" she was hurting, his words have always had a healing and comforting effect on her now she feels how much he can hurt her with his words as well.
"Kate, I am tired of chasing after you, of being afraid that you run off scared because this relationship moves forward.", he sighs deeply running a hand through his hair.
"So what? You just made that choice on your own, without wanting to fix..this?", lacing her words with disbelief and insecurity, in the face that he's just giving up on them. She didn't mean for any of this to happen, she wants to say so much more, but the panic is slowly taking a hold of her, robbing her of these words.
"What do you think would happen after the myriad of things that showed us our problems contained in this relationship, Vaughn, DC and what held you back in saying 'I love you'?"
"I know", he continued, stopping her before she had a chance to answer, "that I messed up too, but I just don't see a way out."
She knows that this situation is not just on her to blame, still she sees it written on his face the way her recent actions have hurt him. That blame she has to bear. He just looks so resigned, his words mirroring his posture.
"Vaughn happened, because we stopped talking, I never knew where we stood. I regret the way I let him go under my skin, but Castle he was never in my future, you were", she attempted one last fight, with her strength slowly waning out of her, he just has to understand what he means to her. She hoped that her words were enough to make him second guess his decision, but his next words shattered that tentative hope.
"How can there be a future if you're constantly on the lookout for an alternative option, Beckett?"
"I thought that maybe you stopped having one foot out of the door, clearly I was wrong", chuckling bitterly to himself he stood up taking he few steps away from her, being halted by her desperate words.
"Stop, Castle please, I hurt you, deeply and I am sorry Castle, please just don't go", she sounded weak, desperate to fix this rift.
To be in his arms once more, being comforted by him and showing her what feeling at home can be like.
She can't believe what is happening right now, her mind is reeling, emotions overflowing her, fear, regret, guilt and love for the man in front of her, who seems so determined to end their relationship.
"I know keeping secrets, excluding you was a mistake, still I know that whatever is broken can be fixed", at least one of them has to have faith that they still can mend things, this time it is she to stay strong in that faith trying to convince him, to make him see, there's still hope.
"Kate, you got that job in DC didn't you?", not letting her answer, as he already seemed to know the answer.
"Kate DC is a future you chose, on your own, it doesn't include me. So yes I am breaking up with you, as hard as it is, I just don't see another way", his tone was sad, defeated even
She pushed him this far, where this optimist of a man saw no hope for them. The man she loved was giving up on her. On them.
Looking at each other, trying to read the others emotions, the heartbreak she saw in his eyes cracked her own heart even further, choking her up. She had done this.
Suddenly, he started to tentatively walk over, towards where she still sat on that swing, lifting his right hand he cradled her cheek, with a soft caress, before he slowly bend down to press his lips to the top of her head, lingering in a silent goodbye.
Watching him walk away was one of the hardest things she ever had to do.
She sits on the same swing set that once made her think of a new beginning, the hope of a brighter future, of a stormy summer night and being in his arms.
Now it's heartbreak, the numbness having by now crept all the way through her body.
"He is gone, he left", ringing on repeat through her mind.
Letting out a choked sob she cards her fingers through her hair bitterly thinking, yes they could have been great together.
A/N So I hope you enjoyed this little piece, I always felt like this scene was missing some seriousness, well the kind of seriousness we all expected at first.
(Though i love the proposal scene, it always felt a bit off)
This is planned to be three chapters in total.
Also and I want to and that, I am looking for a Beta reader. Because english is not my native language.
