"Daddy."
I opened my door to find it was Bo who had been knocking.
"Well, this is a welcome surprise." I smiled; glad I had placed the medication bottles inside my bathroom cupboard.
"I really needed to talk to you; I'm sorry I didn't call first."
"You know you're always welcome. You may live elsewhere, but this will always be your home. Speaking of, you should know better than to knock." I kissed her forehead and turned, pouring us both a cup of coffee, grabbing her favorite creamer out of the fridge just in case she would be popping in for a visit.
"We weren't planning on this happening, not for a few more years, anyway. When we were both settled in our career's and certainly after we were married. What if this is all wrong, what if we end up never marrying now-"
"Bo, Honey… slow down." I chuckled. "Tell me what's going on, then we can figure out how I can help."
"I'm pregnant."
I hadn't felt terror like this in years.
The shiver creeping up my spine, causes my hands to shake uncontrollably. I gulped after a while, trying to remember to breathe. I knew it would happen; I just didn't realize how scared I would be.
The thought…
"A baby?" I managed to croak out. "Well, that's wonderful news!"
I faked my smile and laugh but didn't need to pretend anything as I wrapped my arms around her and held her as tight as I could, my body betraying me when the slight shudders began.
"You're truly happy, Daddy?" She asked, all the fear in the world in her voice.
"How could I not be?" There were never such double-sided words.
Of course, I was happy that there would be a baby for me to love, a piece of Bella and Bo continued. Yet, how could I not be scared?
Bo and Chris decided on a small ceremony and months in advance of her due date so they could marry before the baby was born. Bo was six months along yet hardly showed. The dress was high-waisted, so it hid the barely visible bump.
Her hair was left long and flowing, with the natural curls glowing as the sun hit it perfectly. Much like Bella, she walked beside me, down the aisle, barefoot. She turned to me with the brightest smile, kissing my cheek and softly giggling when I placed her hand into Chris's waiting one.
I held back my emotion over giving my little girl away and gave Chris a nod, taking my seat beside Charlie. The entire ceremony was a blur as images of her growing up through the years swirled before me, as if on a projector that played in the background as they took their vows. Of course, it was in reverse.
She grew younger and younger, till it was Bella's and my turn. Her feet also bare, and on tiptoes to kiss me with so much enthusiasm, I could even hear Charlie clearing his throat.
Then I realized he presently was. Everyone was on their feet clapping while I still sat, Bo and Chris, arm in arm, laughing as they walked through the crowd.
I stayed at the reception for as long as my presence was needed, leaving when I wouldn't be missed. Bo and Chris were staying at the hotel that hosted their party, leaving in the morning for a short honeymoon up the coast. They had promised to come in the morning to say goodbye, but I insisted it was fine, I would see them soon enough.
Right now, I just wanted to be home, in my bed with my memories. It felt comforting to me to lay in the dark and remember. To remember so deeply that I could smell Bella, sometimes even feeling her hand in mine.
I was content, knowing as my senses of her grew stronger, I was getting closer to never having to remember.
I could feel the change; I was almost coming full circle, and very soon, what I waited for would once again be mine.
Life was bittersweet.
But Bo had her family now, and I was at peace.
Please, take a moment and thank Frannie with me! Without here, this probably would have been left undone, and she has- as always- waved her magic wand over my words and made them better! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you do!
