Hello everyone. Here I am back with my Robotech fic after around 5 months! (OMG! but in the meantime I wrote and published another fic set in the universe of Macross, Do you remember love?)

In this chapter Lisa will meet MOST of the people that will be part of her future, while Rick pursues his dream of being an ace pilot. As always I've included characters and references to other Macross sequel, books and Robotech spin-offs like the comics. In my writings I like to follow canon, all canons, as much as possible, whatever that means! No copyright infringements are intended or intentional.

Thank you for reading and if you'd like it please leave a review or any ideas on how you'd like to see the story develop.

Los Angeles, California UEG, August 5, 2007

-Yeah! I mean no! I'm not driving with one hand, what you talking about? Huh? You can see my hands? That's incredible! You know what? Alice is right, you're too old for these tools... ehr... I have to hang up Mitch, got an in call...ok ok, text you later... byeee!

Rick Hunter pressed the red switch on the display and hanged up with his father. The interstate that led onto the highway to Los Angeles was worn e raveged and the asphalt, although it was very early in the morning, seemed to melt in the warm steamy air.

The route was pretty much empty because most of the street traffic had been redirected due to the probability of terroristic acts against civilians.

Maybe that was the reason Mitch was worried about Rick's little trip from Sacramento to Los Angeles, or maybe it was just because of his son's one-handed driving. He'd gotten his driving license a few days earlier, and decided to take it just because he had won a car in one of his last races. It was an endorsement from a major tire brand, but Rick couldn't care less. After all, he was one of the very few people who could afford a car of his own, at that times.

-And it's like... Look, I've been flying planes since I was about 8! What's the difference?

yelled Rick over the phone as he ducked a row of traffic lights.

-Shit!

-I don't think it's properly the same, you know? ... What you doing, boy?

-Nothing Boss! I just took a sharp turn.

-There are no turns on the highway!

Old Mike, was the owner and manager of the Lightning 4, a team that had really made his mark by recruiting Rick Hunter as one of its aces,: since he had joined the squad he got 1st place at the World Championship in London two months earlier and collected several first podium places in other minor races. Aerobatics competitions were very popular at times, partly because they were one of the few sports that were still being played on a competitive level during the civil wars, partly because they had set up a huge online betting network, both legal and illegal.

Rick had been all over the place with his crew for the past year. That morning he was heading to L.A. for a race at the Kern Base Aerodrome. He had never attended a competition at a military airfield and was feeling quite nervous. He wondered, as he always did, if by chance his brother Roy wasn't there. Even though they were always in touch by phone, he had no idea where he might be or what mission he was involved in. Rick got pensive considering whether the day he stopped feeling nervous, he might lose his touch.

-Hey Rick...are you there?

-I am!

he said wearing a pair of dark glasses

-After the race you'll have a meeting with your uh, well, followers...

-Oh Mike! You know that I HATE that stuff!

-I know, but actually the sponsor, who is also that someone who gave you the car you're driving, he counts on it. It's for online bets, you know. The interview will be hosted by Anne Graham... watch out you kid, she can be a real bitch... So be careful what you say!

-Well...it depends on the questions! I am not gonna say that Stonewell turbines are better than Bellcom's!

Old Mike uttered a sigh

-Do not refer on hangars required by Defense Forces. Don't get fresh and make rude gestures, and...DON'T MENTION the Stonewell!

Rick Hunter tried hard not to burst out laughing at old Mike's face.

-Ok man, ok... I won't say anything. I'll pretend to be deaf like all you old former pilots.

-Rick Hunter!

-Uh Mike... jeez, I m so sorry but I have to go... I dunno if you can see it but I'm right in front of the HUGE banner that says, Welcome to Los Angeles! Gotta goo... Chao!

Rick Hunter ran a hand through his hair (a move that had become a habit, and deeply annoyed his father), while, with the other hand performed a risky maneuver and entered the traffic rotary that led to Kern Base.

He scrolled through all the voicemails in his inbox.

Up to one.

-Hi bro, this is Roy. I'm on a classified line so don't reply. Right now I'm heading to Alaska... uuuh I said it! Ok, shit. Process and delete immediately heheh. I ain't forgot it, Rick, good luck with the race today...heard you got your drive license. Look don't kill yourself on the way, Mitch is pretty upset bout this car, uh and... hey gotta go... Take home that trophy, Rick...

A lovely smile flashed across the boy's face making his eyes glow, blue as the ocean stretching out in front of him. His features softened at the memory of his brother Roy.

-Alaska uh?

His right foot pressed on the gas pedal as he rushed down to the valley and his thoughts once again became muddled. The sky was clear and the sun was hitting on the peaks of the wide military airbase: once again he was getting ready to fly.

Alaska Base, UEG, August 5, 2007

Lisa Hayes walked pensively down the endless walkway that linked the officers' barracks to the was six o'clock in the morning and her shift was starting in an hour: she walked beside the huge windows that let in the weak, everlasting sunlight. She still could not get used to these those sunny nights, though she was training at Alaska Base for about 3 months already... the other thing she couldn't still get used too, was spending endless hours working at thousands feet underground.

Alaska Base stretched for tens of miles along the Northern coast of the country around Barrow Strait in the Arctic Ocean, and down below it extended and went down through the rock for miles more: it was the first Robotech factory built on Earth. At the peak of the descent, the construction of the main Grand Cannon, was keeping on relentlessly. It would be ready in about three years. The so-called GC1 in Alaska was the prototype for other similar units under construction between Australia and South America. A fourth cannon was also in progress at the Satellite Factory on the Moon, in the North Polar Region quadrant. Lisa knew that the first and last, were under the close supervision of two pioneering engineers in the field of Robotology: Dr. Emil Lang and Dr. Harold Penn: the two academics were now officially staying on the Moon. Lisa was extremely interested in Lang's studies and secretly wished to meet him .

There were two other issues that constantly filled her thoughts those days. One was, of course, her upcoming moving to Sarah Base, on Mars. She had estimated that within a matter of months, she would be able to leave Earth in a scientific transborder. This class of ships periodically carried technical and scientific staff and brought back completed items to Earth..

Sarah Base was also working at full speed on developing an Earth-like atmosphere, as well as designing and improving the use of AI. It was been planning to settle some colonies and start a voluntary emigration program to Mars in the earlies 2020s.

We could live here...

Though Lisa as she scrolled on her tablet the outline of a city on the Red Planet. It was extremely alluring, with its classical style buildings, reminiscent of the temples of old Greece, surrounded by trees and vegetation.

But maybe... Karl may just wants to return to Earth...

Lisa Hayes closed her eyes for a moment, caught in a dream.

Then a sudden thought brought her back to reality: on Mars she could not pursue her improvement on the new Robotech weapons, nor her studies of warfare strategy. There was no war on Mars. She was somehow displeased to drop her studies of new fighters... she had to admit to herself that since her arrival at Alaska Base, she had been totally absorbed by the new variable fighter prototypes. They were amazing.

At that very time, the early versions of the VF-0 were being tested . The project was unofficially called "Valkyrie" and was being developed both in the Earth's atmosphere and in flight simulators.

The finest pilots in the Defense Forces traveled periodically to the Base for their training, as they could not leave the battlefield for long, in fact that very morning both units and officers were scheduled to arrive.

-Lieutenant Hayes... good morning!

A deep, soothing voice awaken her from her thinking. She had already reached the elevator platform and as she looked around she realized that the room was already crowded with young officers, heading to their stations in the core of the base.

Lisa Hayes blushed as she realize who was gazing down at her. The elevator doors unlocked and the young man stepped to the side to let Lisa, and a couple of other women, pass in.

Then he approached her side, standing in a martial position, stretching himself out to his full height, his legs slightly parted and his arms clasped behind his back. The two of them remained silent in the humming and quiet chatter filling the vast elevator. Floors were descending...- 20...-30.

Suddenly he spoke

-Lisa...

She raised her head to meet his ice-clear blue eyes: she wasn't used to holding a gaze for long.

-Yes... Thomas?

She replied, calling him by name.

-I was wondering if you already had breakfast and...

The elevator descended again, and he glanced nervously at the scoreboard.

Then suddenly, with no wait for an answer, he pushed the stop button for the 37th floor, where the officers' mess hall was located.

-I need at least a half gallon of coffee!

He said with his best charming smile

-I would be very pleased to offer you one.

Lisa blushed again.

Why not...

she thought. After all it was a bit early for her shift.

-Why not...

She said, aloud this time, smiling coyly.

TR Edwards made his way through the automatic doors, standing two steps behind her. Lisa was pleased with the Lieutenant's impeccable manners. He had a polished demeanor. Nearly aristocratic. Well, nearly. She knew Edwards came from a family of royal rank... though this hardly mattered in a post-unification world ravaged by civil wars.

Who knows, maybe he is an earl, or a prince...

She thought childishly. Lisa wondered if she could ever ask him such a question.

The military mess halls were extremely large rooms with beautiful decorations, that made you temporarily forget how many thousands of miles separated it from the ground surface.

At that time, night shift officers would meet up with morning ones, resulting in a leisurely comings and goings of officers, pilots and privates, as well as techs and scientific personnel who had just left their stations or were preparing to go on shifts . This particular moment still captivated Lisa after all these months.

- Can't believe it, TR Edwards is out and about early in the morning? Or rather... he hadn't slept at all, as usual?

Lisa Hayes turned at the unknown voice, a deep, slightly swaggering voice.

- Maybe I am actually sleeping, because this can only be a fuc*ing nightmare!

Edwards retorted with the same verve and a wide smile, reaching out to the estranged officer.

The two gave a formal salute, then slapped each other' shoulders and ended up hugging. They both were laughing loudly, especially the blond-haired stranger.

Lisa sat on the counter seat, watching the whole scene with a questioning gaze.

-Man, if I don't have a stroke today, I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon...

Said Edwards as he walked back to the counter.

-Lisa, let me introduce you to my former comrade in arms on the Jolly Rogers team and... close friend!...can I say that?

Lisa smiled in bewilderment as she looked at the two officers. Soon she placed a hand to her forehead: the man in front of her was wearing the rank of First Lieutenant Commander.

- Second Lieutenant Lisa Hayes, let me introduce you to First Lieutenant Roy Fokker.

- Nice to meet you Lieutenant.

-At ease.

-It goes without saying, you can guess who Lisa is

Edwards said, peacocking as usual

- Admiral Hayes' daughter?

He answered with mock astonishment.

Lisa narrowed her brow and looked at him inquisitively, and Roy was immediately irked by that look...

-I know the Admiral himself.

-Really?-she retorted with annoyance- He never told to me about you, Lieutenant.

Edwards was surprised by that brash behavior, in both of them; it was the first time he saw Lisa Hayes display that proud attitude.

After a moment of uncomfortable silence, Edwards suggested Lisa grab a table.

-Would you like to join us Fokker? Have a cup of coffee?

He said with his flawless manners.

-Yes. I'll walk you to the counter.

The two soldiers moved a few feet away from Lisa, and Roy reached for Edwards' ear.

-Can't believe you're banging Hayes' daughter. You're aiming for the top, man.

Edwards glared at him, not agreeing but also not denying Fokker's claim: said nothing and just shrugged.

-As you know the bastard Hayes would never let his daughter date someone like you...how did you hide your unexemplary behavior?...You amaze me, Tommy! Say... you changed your style completely?

The two young men kept laughing and poking each other while, a few meters away, Lisa Hayes was greeting her roommate.

-Go to sleep?

-I'm exhausted

Replied the young woman from afar

-What?

Lisa struggled to hear her words and waved her to come closer.

- It seems that we 're not meant to see each other, our shifts don't match, Claudia.

Said Lisa trying to be fun.

The girl laid a hand on her shoulder, glancing at her with a warm smile

- At this rate I don't know how we would manage to be friends, Hayes!

The two girls broke out in a giggle.

Lisa truly felt a growing affection for Claudia Grant and wanted to get to know her better. She was grateful for the cheerful way she had always treated her. She had never said anything bout the fact that she was "first and foremost" the Admiral's daughter: at the same time she was easygoing and smart: she had a sense of humor that reminded Lisa of her great friend Serena.

That's why she took her hand and pulled it gently.

-Come sit down for a bit, have a coffee or something!

Claudia smiled

-I could fall asleep right here, you know?

But at the same time she took a chair.

-Here is the coffee!

Said a voice behind them

The two women turned around and Lisa could immediately notice a look of surprise in Edwards' eyes , while, she would have sworn, one of true terror in Roy Fokker's ones.

Claudia, who had not yet really sat down, rose to her feet in a flash. Her eyes were as wide-open as those of the pilot in front of her.

Lisa could deciper her look... she watched at them both, puzzled.

A few moments of solemn silence elapsed, then Fokker parted his lips and spoke. He said only:

-Hello, Claudia.

Kern Base Aerodrome, Los Angeles, UEG

Rick Hunter was sitting in the stands behind the stage, along with his mentor Old Mike. He was wearing his orange suit, provided by a well-known brand of trucking tires that also serviced the Army's light trucks. The flight suit was close-fitting and emphasized his lean and athletic body. He had his hair pulled back over his forehead with a see-through headband that helped the helmet adhere to his skull. Unlike his crew, he was the only one not wearing sunglasses.

Rick was on edge because during his performance he hadn't been as flawless as in rehearsals. He feared number 2 like hell. The few minutes the jury was consulting felt like a torture to Rick. He twitched his finger cuticles. It wasn't very sportsman-like of him, and he knew that, but the only thing he wanted most at that time, was to WIN.

A noise of thrilled female voices pulled him out of the swirl of his thoughts. He looked up in confusion, trying to understand the reason for that scream, only to be immediately overwhelmed by another one roar, even higher in decibels: then he looked up and realized what was happening, the cameramen had framed a very close-up of him in the huge monitors spotted between the bleachers and the barriers. Groups of girls (and some boys), mainly very young, were cheering and jumping on the grand staircase and Rick could not help but smile, that crooked smile that was his trademark and that appeared in the adverts on tv.

The emcee staggered his way up the lineup as if he was tipsy, and grabbed the microphone, making it screech as he stepped onto the stage.

-Ladies and gentlemen and above all distinguished officers of the RDF

he said

-Finally the jury, composed exceptionally among others today, by former World Champion Shane Mason, and Lieutenant Sullivan, head of the Black Parade of the Kern Base, has finally reached the final verdict.

The buzz of the audience for a while stifled the voice of the speaker

-Then who has won!
-We want to know the winner!

The emcee smiled smugly, he liked to build tension in the audience.

-Ok I see that someone, or rather more than someone, is looking impatient!

He glanced at the teams' racing stables where the pilots, and their respective teams, were not hiding their tension and anxiety.

One of the camera girls approached him carrying a small kindle with the results.

-Here we gooo!

He gloated exasperatedly

-Well, let's open the seal. Thank you honey. Pilots are you ready? in the 3rd place... for Stonewell fuel... David Shima!

A loud roar welcomed the young pilot who started approaching the stage

-At the second place we have...

The Mc paused showing an extremely surprised look

-Alejandro Perri for Ishtar!

Another much more excited roar welcomed the second classified: the two pilots' and endorsers' names immediately appeared on the monitors, with their scores timing, and the technical sheet of the performances.

The cheers and screaming didn't seem to stop till they muffled the speaker's voice.

-Ladies and Gentlemen at Kern Base, this means only one thing...

The speaker cleared his throat and continued in a louder tone

-This means only one thing! The winner of the first Aerobatic Flying Championship at Kern Base is...Richard A. Hunter!

He made a small leap, jolting the girl and waving the mic in the air.

-Rick Hunter for Lightning 4! Congratulations!

The audience had simply gone crazy as well as Rick's manager and his mechanic. As expected, they lifted him by weight, making him jump like a child in the air. Then the young pilot was put on his feet and received hugs and handshakes. As quick as a thunderbolt he rushed onto the stage welcomed by the camera girls: a crown of laurel was placed around his neck while he was given flowers and a magnum bottle of champagne. It was all in the usual script. After popping the bottle with a bang, he made half of the foamy wine splash in the air: then he wore the sash with the gold medal and with his best bright smile he stood on the podium with all the girls hanging on his neck: they kissed him everywhere, on his cheeks, neck and forehead while flashes went on shooting.

About all the show, he didn't care, and neither did of all the people down there cheering him on. The only feeling that overwhelmed him and at the same time made him float was the sense of Victory: he couldn't describe it in words, but boy, it was better than anything in the world! Really, wasn't any better. Rick's eyes sparkled with a deeper shade of blue making his beautiful features even more attractive. He raised his right arm to the sky holding the huge cup with the RDF and Kern Base Insignia: the metal shone fiercely against the sunlight, casting a golden glow on the stage.

Alaska Base High Command, Alaska, UEG

-Apollo squadron head to the west quadrant, sub squadron silver, sand and ivory! Coordinates are the exact same, follow Apollo 1! Ivory 12 d'you heard me?! Enemy at 32° 44'! Ivory 12 you've been hit! Get out of the area!

-Apollo 1, switch to Guardian mode! Now! I said now! Fire!

Lisa Hayes' tone of voice grew louder as the difficulty level increased and the adrenaline intensified. She pressed her fist on the console until her knuckles whitened: a wrinkle right between her eyebrows made her look severe than usual. The pilots inside the flight simulators were getting cold sweats as the practice was coming to its end-point.

In the same lane, some other air traffic control officers were spitting coordinated, orders and curses on the opposite side of the display to the pilots testing the new VF-0s.

In the upper deck, where you could get a full view of the aisles and the simulators cockpits, Admiral Donald Hayes, arms crossed behind his back, watched the ongoing mission being completed. The simulation included an overland and water attack. Setting was a bunch of islands in the Pacific area, so enemy attacks could come from the sea, aircraft carriers, land, in ground troops, armed troops and of course in jet fighter squadrons. Tropical winds and tides made more challenging the entire mission.

-Definitely a dramatic scene

muttered Admiral Hayes with malconcealed irony

-Well, like often happens, the simulator is nothing but one version of reality

His interlocutor pull his glasses off of his face and wiped it with the sleeve of his white coat. Hayes took a sidelong glance at the man.

-The last attacks will probably take place in the Pacific. That's why I requested your presence. We are in an absolute hurry to put the new version of VF-0 into the fight, Lang.

The scientist spread his eyes wide, his pupils much larger than normal, completely black and shiny.

-But... Admiral, the Phoenix is not finished yet, and frankly, if you pardon me, it needs an extremely smart pilot to effectively test its limits and flaws.

-This is not a problem.

Hayes folded his arms again, this time on his chest.

-I brought you precisely the best.

Lisa Hayes took off her headset and swayed her hair tied in two loose braids. She pressed the button that linked her speakerphone to one, specific simulator.

-Congratulations Apollo 1 you have accomplished all targets... of course... your timing could have been slightly higher...

-If only you hadn't yelled in my ears for the whole time of the mode switch, I'd have halved my time for sure!

The voice of the pilot startled her. He had already left the cockpit, and at that very moment was lifting his helmet off his head, revealing his face.
Lisa Hayes flushed by surprise as she watched him approaching her.

-But... you!

-Roy Fokker, indeed.

said Admiral Donald Hayes in front of an astonished Lang.

-Look at him... he's already out of the canopy, that guy really has the speed in the cells.

Emil Lang leaned out on the balcony, in amazement.

He really is...

He thought, then smiled widely.

-On these terms, Admiral... well, it's a different matter...

Lisa Hayes walked back against the wall as she tried to avoid the proximity of Roy Fokker, who was dangerously reducing the distance between them.

-I must say I'm surprised.

-Surprised?

replied Lisa

-Of ... of... what?

-Well.. a lot of what

Said the pilot casting his gaze up and down her whole body.

-First of all by your being here as a flight engineer, and by your demeanor too. I thought you were...

-What!?

said Lisa both distrustful and annoyed

-I thought you more shy and even less...

-Attention on the deck!

A loud and vibrant voice made them both shiver from head to toe.

Both Lisa Hayes and Roy Fokker stood at attention, hands on forehead, feet lined up, clicking heels, standin' up straight, staring at the horizon.

All the officers and pilots in attendance had started to murmur.

- Admiral Hayes himself!

-It's really him!

-Did he watched the entire simulation!?

-Here, he's coming!

-Lieutenant Commander Fokker welcome to Alaska Base!

Said the Admiral as he stopped a few steps from the two.

-Admiral Hayes! Aye Sir! Thank you Sir!

-I see that you have already met Second Lieutenant Hayes. Good afternoon Lieutenant!

-Good afternoon Admiral!

said Lisa with no inflection in her voice.

-At ease.

Finally, and at the same time, Lisa and Roy Fokker relaxed. Especially the pilot, who slowly lowered his shoulders, parted his legs and smiled with a certain easy attitude.

-Lieutenant Fokker... finally see you again

-Dr. Lang!

Fokker stepped up to squeeze his hand

- Been two years at last.

Lisa looked cheerfully at the man in a white lab coat in front of her.

Here is the famous Emil Lang, the brilliant scientist.

She expected him to be much older, but he was a clunky young man in his early 30's.

She looked at him with interest, but waited for her father to introduce her.

-Dr. Lang, meet Second Lieutenant Elizabeth Hayes. She is doing her training here at Alaska Base after graduating at Robotech Academy.

Lang smiled subtly. He reached out his hand to her

-I always wished to get the chance to meet you - said Lisa feeling extremely confident -I've heard a lot about you Dr. Lang.

She felt Fokker's gaze straight on her and that upset her. But she was determined to ignore him.

Admiral Donald Hayes glanced at her, pleasantly surprised at the casual attitude that Lisa had acquired. She looked so different from just a few months ago.

-Well...

said Fokker, feeling caught up in a conversation that was growing tedious

- My shift is about to end...

-Lieutenant Fokker!

The Admiral recalled him with an unfriendly tone

-Do you honestly think we came here just to welcome you home?

-Oh, uh, ehr.. no, sir

-In fact, we are here because we've arranged a meeting with you.

-A meeting! uh, really!?

Fokker, caught off guard, could not do much more than nod.

-Yes, sir.

The Admiral glanced one last look at Lisa.

-We'll be talking in the office upstairs. You're dismissed Lieutenant Hayes.

Lisa stood at attention, with a motion of disappointment.

-Yes sir. Good evening, sir.

The Admiral called her while she was already on her way.

-Lisa... see you at dinner tonight?

-Yeah sir, of course...

She immediately retorted.

Then she stood still, watching the three of them going off for the Fokker turned back, caught her eye, and winked at her. She blushed furiosly.

While ascending the 30 floors leading up to the surface, she couldn't help thinking about that annoying pilot.

He's an idiot, indeed, but you can't deny that he's good... he's much better than the other pilots here at the base...

She though while tormenting her nails.

The elevator stopped with a warning beep to let other passengers get on.

-Hey what is that grumpy face? Did you get hit at simulator?

Lisa turned to the voice with a tense look

-Lieutenant Grant!

-Hello to you, Hayes! then how do these arcade game pilots look? you mad, already?

Lisa ran a hand through her hair, a move that had become a habit.

-Mmh yes... I , uh, no, I mean...

Claudia looked at her, smiling slightly as she let herself loose on the wall.

-I am totally exhausted. Have you done with your shift?

The elevator had reached the surface.

-Jeez finally some sunlight... aren't you tired of this light, Hayes? Don't you feel like an night-time in the moonlight? Moon, stars... I forgot what the night looks like ...whatever.

Claudia kept walking fast while chatting, and Lisa almost struggled to keep up with her pace. The two girls went through the large windows, giggling and talking about trivial stuff.

-So why don't we go out tonight? with the girls of the third floor? Melissa (1) is off too...

-Oh, I promised my father having dinner with him

said Lisa with an bit of regret. She actually felt sorry because she'd never even been able to have any of a drink with her roommate.

Claudia sighed resigned.

-But...why don't we drop by the officers' bar. It's only 18.00, we could have a drink

-Affirmative Hayes. I really need a biiig glass of red wine.

The two young women had a seat.

The bar was a room covered with dark and smoky Madeira wood. The salon was adorned with paintings and old relics telling the history of the Aerospace forces. The air was full with smoke, wood, cinnamon. Some officers were playing pool in the next room, some others went in and out of the smokers' area. A very low music in a jazzy style was playing on the big music speakers.

The whole atmosphere made the two girls suddenly feeling relaxed.

-Woah, can't believe this week is over.

Claudia had taken off her tie and undone the first two buttons of her shirt. Lisa took a lock of hair between her fingers.

-What's the matter!? Are you stille worried 'bout the simulations? Though you already know that you're among the best. You've been in the top 5 for weeks. God, you should be happy instead of going around with that long face...

Lisa smiled coyly

- Stop it! That's not true...

-You're very good, I mean it! Seriously!

-It's just that...that pilot, that Fokker! Made me get nervous...

Claudia Grant's expression changed drastically. Her beautiful smile gave way to a pensive and frustrated expression. Lisa noticed it.

-Said something I shouldn't? Pardon me Claudia... I just... was thinking out loud, I didn't want to offend him, you know...

-Oh stop it!Claudia waived her hand up in the air as pushing something away

-You're absolutely right. He really is an incredible braggart, arrogant. When it comes to planes he's absolutely out of control, and what's more, he thinks he's the best in the whole fleet. Which is crazy considering how huge the Aviation is and...

Lisa looked at her in awe, while Claudia got way more tense and swirled her glass in the air as she keep talking.

-You... you know him well, don't you?

Claudia blushed, she immediately silenced and turned away her gaze

- Only...I...yeah, there was a time when I knew him well.

Lisa opened her eyes wide and lifted up a little on the table.

-Really? But well, I... you were with him, weren't you!?

Claudia ended up chocking with a sip of wine

-Sshh! shut up! What ya thinking!? Nooo of course...ehr...

-I'm sorry Claudia - replied Lisa - I didn't mean to invade your privacy...

-Oh, doesn't matter, really... and you haven't invaded my privacy.

She swiped her finger on the thin surface of the glass, then looked at Lisa.

-There's not much to say, well... maybe one day I will tell you... Perhaps in front of a glass of red wine just like this.

Claudia's gaze was lost for a moment in an indistinct, distant spot far away

-But tell me 'bout you! Come on, you really do have something to tell!

-Lisa blushed

-What do you mean...?

-Well I saw the pictures you've placed in our room... And well d'you think I didn't notice that bright rock shining on your finger?

-Ah!

Lisa smiled instinctively, touching her ring

-Oh come on, I want to know aaanything! How long have you been engaged!?

-Uh, I...it's...about two years...he...he is a soldier.

-That's something I noticed sweetie... from the pictures, I mean.

Lisa blushed with delight. She hasn't spoken to anyone 'bout Karl for a long time. If not to Karl himself. They used to exchange holographic messages(2) every day with a new app called Holo, which was a big hit in the army. Lisa kept all of his messages in a heart-shaped harddrive that she kept on her pocket. She took it everywhere, and in every free moment, she watched his holos and recorded and send new ones. It wasn't like talking live but she was content. Moreover, in a few months she'd meet him again.

-If this isn't love, I don't really know what love is! Hey, what you doing? Dreaming about the wedding dress?

-No...It's not that official yet...

-You mean your father doesn't know...?

-Of course he does! You know... Karl, thats his name... he..he served at the Kern Base under my father till the assassination of President Niven...yeah...he did know him well...ehr...listen, d'ya want to see him?

Said Lisa pulling out her little heart shaped box

-You have any holo?

said Claudia amused

-Yes I have, I got some videos. We text each other every day.

-It's so romantic! SO, let's see this handsome soldier!

Lisa opened the box and pushed the play button. Immediately Karl Riber's hologram popped up: he was sitting at his desk in a casual posture, wearing his uniform undone and his hair quite lengthy on his forehead. Claudia could notice the First Lieutenant's rank on his shoulders. The hologram's quality was excellent, and she could make out every slightest difference between the uniforms she'd seen so far and that one.

-But... what line does your boyfriend serve in, Lisa?

-He's not in a combat squadron. He serves as a researcher at Sarah Base...on Mars.

Claudia startled

-Oh jeez... I didn't know! Sorry, Lisa...

-Oh no! Don't apologize. I was supposed to tell you, sooner or later... and...

suddenly she looked sad and quiet.

-Anyway... he's really good-looking.

Claudia tried to cheer up her

-I mean, I wouldn't have expected anything less from you Hayes, but, damn, he's really hot. How old is he?

Lisa frowned childishly, soon covering the 3D hologram with her hand. The image trembled between her fingers, splitting.

-He is 24! she said rudely

- You re both too young to get married... I do believe it!

Claudia finished drinking her wine and waved a hand to the waiter

-Let's toast!

Lisa made a grin

- Well whatever, why wait. I love him. He loves me too... I'm sure of it...

-Have no doubt 'bout that...but what if you regret it? I mean, there are so many people on earth! And you want to preclude yourself the chance to savor any other man for... ever?

Said Claudia winking, and Lisa flushed hard

- Claudia! how can you even think something like that!

The two girls burst out laughing

-I'm serious Hayes. Just over here at Alaska Base, there are some military guys who'd kill for a date with you.

-But... oh stop it! It's not like that!

-It's true, I'm telling you...

Then she lowered of her voice

-For example I can see one of them at 10 o'clock...shhhh here he comes!

-Good evening beautiful ladies in the army, eyes and ears of pilots on earth. Keepers of broken hearts...sweet memories during the battle...

TR Edwards stepped up to the table, smiling with all his famous charme. Lisa blushed while Claudia started laughing in amusement.

-I didn't know you were a poet...

-You can tell, I am exactly a lineage of Shakespeare himself.

Lisa placed both hands to her mouth

-Oh... you serious Lieutenant Edwards?

She was genuinely amazed. Claudia looked at her puzzled

-Of course he's not, Hayes! Can't you see he's kidding? I think the only Shakespeare stuff that TR knows is Jan Morris' music video! hahaha!

-Lol, Claudia! Dont be rude. You're forgetting that I'm a romantic, or... I would dare to say... the last of the romantics!

TR smiled, feeling a little bit uncomfortable.

Claudia could not believe her ears. Obviously for some unknown reason Thomas Riley Edwards intended to appear "different" at Lisa's eyes.

-Oh that song is awesome...although I've heard more than once that Jan Morris doesn't exist... that she's...like a virtual singer

said Lisa

TR burst into a well-mannered giggle

-It's an old joke, Lisa -said the pilot - but believe me I met her once. And I can guarantee you that Jan Morris does exist. She's really made of flesh and bones. Just like us.

Claudia turned her eyes up to the ceiling

-Please don't tell me...

-How grumpy you are today, Claudia! Don't you believe what I'm telling you?

Then he looked at Lisa and smiled gently.

-I have to say that Miss Morris is really a beautiful woman, as well as an acceptable performer, but...

- And where did you meet her, ah Thomas?

said Claudia, insistently.

-Well I...

TR Edwards paused as if pondering whether or not to disclose the information.

-I... I met her in Macross City.

The two girls choked back a little cry of excitement.

-You mean...-said Claudia

-You... were...-said Lisa

-At South Atalia Island!? said both at the same time.

TR smiled in contentment. He had caught the full interest of Lisa Hayes. He was already getting ready for an impassioned monologue but suddenly she stood up in a hurry.

-Oh God, it's so late! you'll have to excuse me.

She slid her chair on the floor as she fetched her tablet and the flight test results she had printed after the shift.

-Lieutenant Edwards goodbye, Lieutenant Grant... see you around...

Lisa seemed to ponder thoughtfully, then looked at Edwards straight in the eyes.

-I...would love if you could tell us a little bit about Macross City...wouldn't you Claudia?

Claudia snorted as TR smiled wide.

- Sure Lisa - he murmured- but...it has to be a secret between us.

-Oh yes, of course! Thanks Thomas! Gotta go, I have a meeting with my father.

Lisa walked away quickly, swaying her hair: her pace was steady, but still a bit hesitant and naive.

Edwards followed her path with his gaze, until he saw her disappear round the corner.

-You've never been to South Atalia.

-Uh?

Edwards turned to face her frowing, but immediately smiled slightly.

-Well you're wrong Claudia, honey... maybe you're not so well-informed but I have been there just last year together with your on-off FWB, Roy Fokker!

On hearing those words Claudia Grant winced and Edwards noticed it.

- Ah... uh, so that's the reason why you so nervous, Lieutenant. Am I to assume that your crush is not completely gone? Is it the return of the pilot that has gotten you in a bad mood?

Claudia stared him.

-Don't know what you talking about.

She leaned over to grab her bag and notebook from the table.

-And by the way... fly down Tommy, Lisa Hayes is engaged to be married so...

The woman walked past, then turned to face him

- I suggest you, don't even begin to try.

TR split his mouth open, dropping his jaw

-Bullshit!

-I ain't lying, and if you don't believe me you can always ask her next time you meet! Tavvauvutit (3) Lieutenant!

Claudia walked away with a confident and sensual pace. A lot of the soldiers sitting at the tables turned to look at her: even Edwards lingered for a long time on the woman's figure, then pensively ran a hand through his hair wandering into the club.

Temporary Office of Dr Lang , Alaska Base

-Well Admiral, I'm very thankful for the trust you put ehr... in me, but I, I'm really not the best person to teach pilots, I mean...

Donald Hayes raised a hand, a gesture that dictated silence.

- Are you questioning my word, Lieutenant Fokker?

Roy Fokker frowed his brows

who the f**k did he think he is, some kind of absolute monarch or what?

- What I am telling you is... - the Admiral coughed slightly

- I consider, Dr. Lang and I, in short we, the entire RDF, consider that you are the most qualified pilot to handle the new variable fighters.

Fokker's eyes widened at Hayes' statements, which were halfway between a command and a compliment.

-Sir! Aye sir ! Thank you, sir!

He retorted instinctively.

Hayes softened his look. Then he raised his voice

- I believe that you are the best here, and that the other pilots can only get to learn from you, Fokker.

-Yes sir, thank you sir! he said again

-Good. Now, Fokker, you will point me out a team of three pilots that you think can join you in the upcoming tests under Dr. Lang's supervision.

Then, Lang carefully picked up a tablet from his desk drawer.

-Here are the files of all the finest pilots in the RDF, if they are not here at the base, it will not be a problem to summon them from the line, the list is constantly updated on MIA and KIA. Please make your choice.

Fokker took the device, stretching a hand across the wooden desk.

-You may sit down Fokker

said Hayes slyly.

-Aye sir!

A brief silence passed among the two men and Lang looked at them pensively.

Roy Fokker quickly scrolled through the list of pilots in alphabetical order. He read their rank, their military history.

Shin Kudo(4)...

He took a deep breath as his eyes settled on the picture of a young soldier with a mole next his right eye.

...I'm sorry man, but I can't take you away from Asuka. You... you must stay with Aries(4), until I return.

Roy scrolled down the tablet nearly to the end of the list; he was familiar with the names, faces and voices of many of the people on that list. A crooked smile flashed across his lips.

Nora Polyansky(4)... a psycho bitch, but she has the strength of a man. She knocked me out drinking too. Well not just at drinking...

Suddenly something lit up in his mind. Scrolling back to the letter I, he found the name he was looking for. He zoomed in on the scarred face

You' re still alive old man.

Donald Hayes was looking intently at Fokker's face movements,

-Did you get ideas, Lieutenant?

Roy lifted his gaze and met Admiral Hayes' eyes.

-Yes sir, I...I can see he's still alive.

-Who are you talking about, Fokker?

-Well... I'm talking about the Instructor.

the Admiral's look turned into an indecipherable expression.

-You mean...

-Yes sir, Ivanov... the old DD Ivanov(4). He...he has practically taught me everything.

Donald Hayes grew thoughtful. Both men stared at each other in silence.

Roy Fokker left Dr. Langt's office shortly afterwards, in a rather annoyed mood. He had gotten caught up in this whole flight test leadership thing, without really intending to. In addition, the Admiral had made it clear to him that the responsibility for a successful outcome was partly on his shoulders. He didn't like that, or rather he couldn't tell if he liked it or not. He glanced at his reflection through the hallway window pane. He fixed his unruly hair on his forehead, as he recalled Donald Hayes'voice

-You are the best, Lieutenant Fokker

Maybe this was something he could like...

As he walked into the elevator, heading for the dormitories, he called his girlfriend, Dr. Aries Turner. The phone made a certain number of calls.

-What's up Fokker?

- Aries! I'm happy to hear from you, too!

In the background he could hear the clicking sound of lab tools being banged around.

-Aries?

-Mmh...?

-Are you on speakerphone!?

-Of course I am! I'm in the lab... just starting a sampling.

-Ah baby! Sorry your people have to listen about the dream I had last night. Guess who the main character was? YOU! And how many clothes was she wearing? None!

-!Oh! Roy!

A sudden muffled sound was heard, and the phone switched to headset mode

-You really are just... impossible, ya know?

-The thing is... I like to see you blush!

-You like to embarrass me

-Which is the same...

Roy went on fixing his haircut staring at the mirror: he ran a hand carelessly through his hair.

-So... is there some urgent reason you're bothering me while I'm at work?

-You're mean baby, just wanted to hear your voice.

Suddenly Roy became pensive. His voice changed.

-Actually yes... there is a reason. Aries. I got an assignment just a little while ago, from Admiral Hayes.

-Oh...

-I wanted to ask your, ehr... ...let's say, your advice on the matter. Well... going to my quarters, can we talk?

Aries Turner remained silent for a brief moment.

-Does it mean you'll have to stay in Alaska for a long time?

Roy could hear a hint of pain in her snorted

-That's it, I... things are a lot more complex than I thought... than WE thought...

-You said we would never be apart for so long again...

Suddenly Aries Turner's voice had become as croaky and plaintive as that of a child.

Roy Fokker was starting to regret everything. Of calling her. Of having accepted Hayes' order, but what else could he do! It was an order...jeez. He regretted having left Asuka. But damn, that was an order too.

Why the fu*k did I enlist? Ah right, what did Pops use to say? To protect the woman I love...to protect the woman I love...(5)

-Roy! Why don't you talk? You there? Roy!

Lieutenant Fokker snapped out of his ranting.

-I'm here, sweetie.

He felt suddenly unsteady. Her voice made him feel inadequate.

The elevator stopped on the floor of the officers' dormitories. Roy started walking down the hallway towards his room.

-Baby, don't make this harder than it needs to be, okay? Don't like to hear that little sad puppy voice, hmm?

Aries mumbled something intelligible and he suddenly felt the urge to protect her, to hide her from the world she was forced to live in. Far apart. They were forced to live apart, again.

-I love you so much sweetie. You're my love, baby you know that?

Roy was so busy whispering little sweet nothings into the phone that he turned the corner and literally threw himself at a man coming in the opposite way. The clash was quite severe as Roy slammed his temple right into the man's nose.

-Ouch!

-Hey, where the f**k you going?

Roy staggered back a few steps, tilted his head and rubbed his forehead with one hand.

-I'm sorry, I...

Suddenly his lower jaw hung in mid-air

-I'll be darned... you...

- Looks like you have already taken the blow!

That voice, that deep, unique voice, that teasing tone. His piercing gaze, was the same: as the last time they'd met.

Roy brought the phone up to his mouth.

-Call you back in a minute, Aries.

Then he looked again at the grinning man in front of him. Roy grinned back in disbelief.

-It's been a long time ,man!

-But it went by fast, in the end...

Roy stretched out his hand but the two ended up hugging, clapping their hands vigorously on each other's backs.

-Who could have guessed it, uh?

-I thought you were confined to some prison in Japan or in the Commonwealth... you're not even on the list...

-What list?

-Oh... never mind. You here now...

Roy laid a hand on the man's shoulder once again.

-Welcome to Alaska Base, Jack Archer!

Kern Base, Los Angeles

After the moments of celebration it was time, for the young pilots, to claim their prize.

The first one was an orange single-seater Fan Racer with a futuristic design. It was displayed on the monitors to the roars of wonder of the audience. Rick Hunter couldn't believe his eyes. He was accustomed to prize money, which was never actually too much, but this time, the small aircraft had been directly given by the Defense Forces. It really did look like a perfect little toy. And it was his.

Rick looked around the stands searching for the gaze of his manager: old Mike smiled at him. At that moment Rick looked like a child on Christmas morning.

The Emcee, aided by the camera girls, announced that a few minutes later, in the booth set up in the racetrack, the journalist Anne Graham, would interview the pilots along with him, reading the audience's questions. Perri, Shima, and of course Hunter, were very popular names among stunt competition followers and also in the female target audience. All of them had a proudly fanbase. But, while the first two were 22 year olds already and did have some experience with the media, well, Rick Hunter in addition to his very young age, had often made miscommunications...

He did not know how to contain himself in press interviews, especially when he aimed to continually underestimate his adversaries and seemed to get great enjoyment out of it too.

David Shima, who had placed third, looked at him with rancor, Alejandro Perri, superiorly ignored him. While they were taking their seats on high perches, the journalist Anne Graham approached.

-Hey, let's take a picture later, yeah?

Rick looked at her in dismay, she was a woman of at least 40 years old, with a minimal, monochromatic look.

-My daughter, Sue, is a fan of yours... she's 9 years old!

Rick sighed with relief

-Oh, uh, of course ma'am, I'll be pleased!

During the exchange, the former emcee took the floor, announcing to the increasingly noisy audience the modalities of the "meet and greet" with the pilots. Questions would be sent from all those who had the app downloaded on their smartphones. For everyone else? Well they would be just content to listen.

-I do hope the questions will be interesting... said Anne Graham with a slick smile - and not as predictable as usual!

-Hehe Anne, you're always tranchant, instead! Let's start with the first question... it comes from the user fanracer85 and is for ... Rick Hunter! So Rick, listen: "Is it true that your brother is in the Army? Yet you've always said you're a pacifist, what do you think of the Defense Forces?"

Old Mike felt a chill down his spine, mentally he recommended himself to all the saints

Here comes the bomb...

Rick opened his eyes wide and instinctively brought a hand to his head. After rubbing his hair for an infinitely long time Anne Graham took the floor:

-Finally we have a nice interesting question on a more social level!

Rick looked at her blankly, an answer was required and right now.

He fiddled with the microphone wire.

-Well..yes I...yes, that's right, my brother is a jet fighter pilot!

A cheer spread through the audience and Lieutenant Sullivan grinned with contentment.

-My...my brother is a Lieutenant in the RDF and well I... -Rick swallowed hard -I think the RDF is doing...a great job...I hope the war is over soon and my brother...

At a certain point Rick's voice became firmer and more resolute.

-I am a pacifist and always will be, but I cannot deny the great work the military is doing to put an end to the war. I hope my brother will come home to us soon, safe and sound!

A moment of silence was soon followed by a big round of clapping... Old Mike started to breathe again while Anne Graham enthusiastically applauded him.

-Oh that's so worthy of you, Rick!

A lot different questions followed, some light and easy to take, some technical and specific, and some others were just gossipy.

-And now we have a question for the three of you guys! You can't escape it! "Who is your ideal girl"!?

murmuring and giggling spread on among the female audience, as Shima spoke up.

-Well I... I'm a sucker for blondes! A girl like Jan Morris would be the real deal.

Perri nodded vigorously

-Yep totally, Jan Morris is my proto-type of girlfriend!

Actress and singer Jan Morris was at that time much more popular than the president of UEG. Many rumors and urban myths were being spread about her. Like that she was a virtual singer and her voice was played by a software.

Rick thought on Shima's words, blondes... he also had a thing for blondes, especially for one... a green-eyed blonde with a freckle covered face. He suddenly felt a hint of rage swell inside his chest.

-Not me, I don't like blondes! I love dark hair! Possibly black! Long and straight black hair!

With that sentence he thought he might hurt Jessica. Who knows if she was even listening at that moment. She had now been living in southern Canada for over a year.

-And I'll say more.

Rage was overtaking him. His eyes had become a shade of murky blue.

-I don't like girls who get too involved in politics. In fact, in my opinion it's not a girls' stuff. Women should do more feminine things, like singing or cooking(6)!

Rick spoke his opinion all in one breath, with a certain amount of satisfaction.

Old Mike raised his gaze to the sky,

Here is the bomb

Anne Graham couldn't believe her ears, her eyes widened as the emcee stammered out monosyllables against Rick's tirade. The crowd stared open-mouthed, not uttering a sound.

-Rick Hunter! That is really sexist of you! That is not an acceptable option!

Anne Graham looked at him with venom shot eyes. If those eyes could have fired Rick Hunter would have been riddled instantly.

And so a grand day, ended with a crushing humiliation for the young aerobatic ace.

During the dinner celebration he got several demonstrations of dissent, not to say recriminations, not to say shitstorm on the internet. The meal turned out to be a little bitter, especially for Rick's manager and for all of the Lightening 4 crew.

-And yet you were doing great, kid! What has got into you!? How could you say something so...so...omg, so dumb!

Rick Hunter was listening to the lecture with head down, cursing Jessica Fisher out mentally. It was all her fault, of course. And now he was coming off as an immature male chauvinist too.

-I couldn't care less, Mike!

Rick buried his head in his collar.

-I told you all the time I don't want to do anything else, all I want to do is flying!

Mike looked at him with disapproving concern.

-I hope so, because after this performance I don't think you going to find a girlfriend anytime soon!

Later that day. Alaska Base, UEG

Lisa Hayes entered the large dining room adjoining the Admiral's office. The huge glass window that slid open behind the desk showed the white snowy landscape. The faint sunlight played tricks on the snow blanket that coated all the surrounding buildings. The retro-looking Control Tower, reached straight up like a dart towards the sky. To the immediate right was the landing area platform for space launches. Alaska Base was one of the main cosmoports on Earth.

-It's so different from the view we used to take from my office at Kern base...isn't it?

Lisa turned at hearing the Admiral's voice

-Yes, Dad. It's strange, but I do miss the hot California sun.

-I don't. I'll tell you, with the same weather I've always favored Australia.

Lisa's heart sank when her eyes rested on the digital photo frame on the desk. She picked it up: the static picture was a shot of her and her mother hugging in the park of their Melbourne house.

Both stood in silence. Then the Admiral cleared his throat.

-You won't be disappointed to know that we have a third diner with us today, won't you?

She looked at him with interest, she had no idea who he-or she- might be. Lisa was a little disappointed because she would have rather had a casual meal with her father, but when she saw who was standing behind the door she changed her mind immediately.

-You've already met a few hours ago, but I'd like to take this opportunity to officially introduce you...This is my daughter, Second Lieutenant Elizabeth Hayes. Lieutenant, this is Dr. Emil Lang.

Lisa smiled happily

-Dr. Lang, it's really a pleasure to meet you.

Lang smiled and Lisa caught herself looking into his big strange eyes. They were truly deep and dark. The irises and pupils seemed to be blurred into an ink-black abyss.

-It is a pleasure and an honor to meet you too, Lieutenant.

said the scientist informally.

He was still wearing his lab coat, and from his jacket pockets were hanging dozens of devices. Pens, isometric calculators. A blootooth earpiece dangled from one of his ears. He seemed to still be busy with his evening work. The Admiral looked at the Dr. considering his sloppy attitude. He sighed.

- Well I guess we could have a seat. Dōzo Lisa-Chan (go ahead Lisa)

-Hai otōsan (yes father)

Lang grinned at the Admiral's homely attitude toward his daughter. It was a side of him he didn't know. White wine, water and beer were being served. Lisa Hayes was sitting right in front of him and she was eager to know the reason of his presence at the Base. But she knew it was the Admiral the one who could and should decide whether to take that kind of topic.

They talked some more about the weather and climate change above and below the equator. Then Lisa suddenly said:

-Well,what's the weather like at the satellite factory?

Lang smiled in surprise

-You've never been in space Lieutenant Hayes?

The Admiral grunted

-No, of course she's not.

Lisa narrowed her eyes and fixed her hair on her shoulders, a gesture she had started to do whenever she was nervous. She knew what her father meant with that sentence, with that grunt.

Lang, who was extremely sensitive, felt it wasn't worth going into. But Lisa didn't feel that way

A Venetian roast was served, whatever that meant.

-It is difficult to find fish...

the Admiral started but Lisa spoke at the same time.

-Soon I will take my first trip into the solar system too... -she breath out nervously- you know my final destination is Sarah base, on Mars.

Here she had said it. Every time she mentioned her goal she felt it get more and more real, and closer.

-Sarah Base!

Lang glanced with interest at the serving dish with the beef.

-I went there a few months ago

Lisa's cheeks flushed, her heart pounding violently.

-Oh... really?

The Admiral had a stern look on his face. None of the three of them had had a bite of food. Lang immediately realized that the air between the two Hayes was tense. He served himself a piece of roast, picking up a morsel.

-Oh! This is great, I was getting fed up with the freeze-dried food from the Satellite Factory. Admiral, I will never thank you enough for your dinner invitation.

Donald Hayes agreed with another grunt. Then they ate in silence. Lisa was upset because she could very well sense her father's hostility when the topic Sarah Base was being brought up.

Its just... so incredible after all this time!

Lisa thought and rethought about her father's attitude and still didn't resolve to face him. Instead he spoke unexpectedly

-You know Lisa Chan-he said fondly - Dr. Lang will be spending some time here at Alaska base because we definitely need to get the new VX-0 prototype into service. It's a variable fighter that Dr. Lang and his team had had been planning for some time...but right now we do need to get it into the game as soon as possible, the Anti-Unification wars are coming to an end, there's no need to deny it. We must annihilate those few terrorist cells that still infect some territories and...

-I thought Robotech weapons were meant to be protective and defensive devices, not offensive ones.

said Lisa in a cold voice. still annoyed by the earlier attitude of her father.

Lang carefully wiped the lenses of his glasses with a napkin

-this is true but...

-Elizabeth, you must know that the people of Earth are at their wits' end. Our main task is to protect civilians.

-Of course, father. I don't disagree with you. It's just that on an ideological level, things were set up very differently... Captain Gloval said...

Donald Hayes raised a hand as if to break off the discussion in the bud.

-Henry Global is not a preacher or a philosopher. He is a military man like the rest of us. A very good war strategist I would dare to say.

Lisa's cheeks blushed with fury. Lang was startled, the whole conversation growing more and more confused and tense.

-Ehr Lieutenant Hayes, as the Admiral said, we need to complete the final run of VF-0 Phoenix as soon as possible. That's why some RDF pilots have been recalled from the battlefields here at Alaska base. Tomorrow some of my staff will arrive from the satellite factory. Dr. Bartlow (7) and Dr. Zand... you may come to the hangars whenever your work schedule permits, and take a look...

Lisa glanced sideways at her father without softening her face.

Tthat would be great, thank you Dr. Lang

She said dryly.

-Don't thank me, I've already spotted your record. You are in the top 5 highest scoring officers on the base...

-What Dr. Lang is trying to tell you in advance, is that you will definitely be on the staff that will lead the testing of the new Phoenix in earth's atmosphere. For that you must train to perfection

Said the Admiral sharply without looking at her.

-Yes, yes exactly

Said Lang in dismay, violently bumping a fork on his plate and clanging it.

-Oh.

Lisa was stunned. She was just being told that she would soon be testing real variable fighters. Out in the air in the sky above Alaska Base. Real mecha that would be flown by the best pilots of Defense Forces. Taken aback she smiled, both flattered and excited.

Lang looked at them in relief

-If the Admiral permits, I would like to invite you, Lieutenant Hayes, to the scientific hangar tomorrow. My people will be arriving from Apollo Base in the early morning.

Donald Hayes sighed

- I suppose so.

He was annoyed that his and Lisa's relationship was turning cold. She was resentful about the Sarah Base thing and Hayes was navigating by sight. Time was moving fast and he still hadn't made up his mind to speak to her. He wished he could go back in time and not start all that mess with the Riber Fruhling issue.

The morning after, Alaska Base, UEG

Lisa Hayes got up so early that morning, that she felt like she hadn't even slept. She jumped into the shower trying not to disturb her roommate Claudia Grant. She brushed her very long hair into a braid and then wrapped it around her head. She put on her camp uniform which consisted of a pair of tight fitting pants, a sleeveless tank top, a zipper up sweatshirt and an aviator style jacket with the black and blue Robotech Defence insignia. She put on military boots, some leather gloves and a fur hat. The temperature outside was 5 degrees. She walked through the wide hallways toward the dormitories, but instead of heading at the elevators, she took the opposite way, to the exit. She paused for a moment in front of the sliding doors while the bot acquired her facial ID and waited for the affirmative beeping. Then she stepped out into the frozen air.

Her nose turned immediately red from the sudden temperature change. She could have taken a small cab to cross the base and head for the hangars, but she decided instead to walk. She was still fascinated by the nature that surrounded Alaska Base. She narrowed her eyes, feeling with all her senses the call of that wild nature.

One day, we'll be back

She thought

One day we'll be back, Karl...

The outdoor hangars where Dr. Lang had temporarily set up his office were huge warehouses up to 50 feet high. Lisa Hayes had to ask a security guard for the exact location of the scientist's office.

She entered the dark, pressurized air of the A-12 hangar, breathing in the pleasant smell of fuel. She was surprised to hear only utter silence; the working on the variable fighters had not yet begun.

-So,your punctuality was not a legend.

A voice from above made her gasp.

Lisa tilted her head up and peered with half-lidded eyes into the darkness: Dr. Lang was standing on the gallery upstairs, several meters high, with his arms crossed on the banister: he wore a pair of glasses around his neck and a pair on his head, he was smiling in a leisurely way.

-Dr. Lang!

-The elevator is number two!

-I'm sorry, I'm a little early

said Lisa, taking off her hat as she looked around in the hallway

-Don't worry, there are delays and my staff will arrive in about an hour. Their ship will be landed in the Arctic sea nearby. In the meantime I can show you...

-Oh yeah!

she said as she interrupted the Dr., then she blushed.

-I'm sorry I didn't mean to cut you off.

Lang smiled trying to scan the girl's gaze. With that baggy clothes she looked even younger.

-How old are you, Lieutenant Hayes?

-I... I am 19.(7)

Lisa answered.

-You are very well trained. The other officers who will take part in the drill are up to 10 years older than you.

Lisa squinted her eyes and Lang noticed her diffidence.

-I didn't mean to imply that you somehow got the job for some kind of privilege.

He fixed his glasses on his nose.

-Anyway, your scores speak for themselves... come on, I'll show you my office.

The interim office was nothing more than a room hastily set up to accommodate four workstations. You could tell it was not a permanent site. After all, the scientist primarily traveled to other bases.

Lisa stepped into the room. She smiled as she saw the frantic mess covering one of the desks.

-It's temporary- said Lang as if reading her mind.

A large monitor was set up on the Dr.'s desk, some of the machines were similar to the subterranean ones, where the shuttles were tracked. But Lisa noticed that that station had been set up recently. All the cables were tangled on the floor, a sign of a recent arrangement.

She took a few steps and Lang pointed to the coat rack.

-You can hang your jacket there, Lieutenant.

The two of them studied each other for a moment.

-So ...

-Well...

They spoke at the same time

-You first

-Well I ... Lieutenant Hayes I... I must say I was quite surprised to learn that your destination is Sarah Base.

Lisa squinted her eyes again with distrust. Lang sensed that the girl was not only young in looks, but also her personality was not very grown up.

He realized that he had recently managed to connect his sensitivity with whoever was in front of him. All of this data was being processed by his analytical brain. He has understood that there was something stronger than logic, driving his instincts. It had all started when... so long ago, his expedition team had stepped into The Great Visitor's inner core...

-Dr Lang? Do you hear me?

Lang broke out of his musings and faced with the young officer's inquisitive green eyes, like those of a cat. Auburn hair braided tightly. A petite nose and a small pouting mouth. The grimacing of her lips was the only trait she had in common with her austere father. The whole face was angelical but everything about her exuded a strong determination.

Lang sat down on the swiveling chair and said

- I am sorry...could you repeat?

Lisa walked a few steps towards the window. She felt a little nervous about Lang's question, but she sensed she could give him her trust.

-Sure you wonder why I'm training as a bridge officer during these months if Sarah Base is basically an observation and research base.

Lisa quickly brushed her braid behind her shoulders and glanced out at the horizon.

-That's it, I...let's say it's a sort of silent pact with my father...Admiral Hayes.

suddenly Lisa got upset and her voice grew more shrill

-You have certainly noticed that my father disapproves of my choice, and especially does not want to accept it!

Lisa's eyes shone fiercely, Lang was startled. He mumbled something and carefully wiped the glasses he was carrying.

-Now, Lieutenant Hayes... I, I understand the Admiral's reasons however...

Lisa pressed her lips together

-However... well...

Lang got up and walked towards the girl, quadrating right in front of her. Both of them encased in the window frame, in the faint light of the Arctic sun.

-I know your story...if you can call it that way ...I had the privilege of meeting Lieutenant Riber Fruhling...

Upon hearing that name, Lisa's heart flipped.

-Karl Riber... is a little genius you know, Lieutenant Hayes, Sarah Base is the right station for him...

-What? Dr. Lang it means that you... - She smiled instantly, showing her perfect teeth.

-Yes a few months ago, I was with Dr. Penn on Mars for some tests, pure formality. We are conducting research on Protoculture.

Lisa Hayes widened her eyes with interest.

-Proto?

Lang realized he had spoken too much and muttered something awkwardly.

-What I meant was... that... well I had the pleasure of getting to know Karl and also become quite... a friend to him. I don't have much time for personal relationships, you know. But that stopover on Mars was worthwhile. I was able to gain the friendship of an excellent soldier and an outstanding scientist. I am sure you will be very happy together.

Lisa's heart was about to explode. She wondered if Dr. Lang could hear her heartbeat.

-Thank you Dr. Lang...

-You don't have to worry about your father, it's perfectly normal for him to act this way. After all, you're his only child, and Mars isn't exactly round the corner, but you know...

Lang walked back behind his desk.

-This device is linked to all space colonies. It's a brevet I developed myself ... sure the hook-up is not in HD, but I could still improve it.

Lisa looked at him puzzled, without catching the thread of the speech.

-For example, Harry Penn is now on Apollo Base, and I can call him at any time, by dialing his internal number. It's like a video chat, and believe me Lieutenant Hayes, this speeds things up considerably. Of course, the device responds only to me. It detects a password...

Lisa held her breath, maybe she was starting to get it.

Lang looked at her imperturbably.

-If I would like to contact the Satellite, for example, I would simply type in the correspondent number code. So for the rest of the outposts in the solar system...

Lang took a pencil from his pocket and grabbed a small sheet of pink fluorescent paper. He scribbled rapidly and laid the scrap of paper on the desk. Then he stood up and let the wheels of the chair spin for a couple of meters.

-It's time! Those two should be arrived already!

said Lang talking about his assistants. He took a few steps to the door.

-By the way, there are more flying officers coming in today for flight check... and just yesterday morning a whole squadron of fighter pilots arrived from Japan. I wonder why a full squadron though...

Lang kept talking as he disappeared into the hallway but Lisa hadn't made a move.

She collected the small pink paper with trembling hands, there was only a small sentence written on it. "The universe is made of stories" alongside a small acronym: "wk". The second line was a sequence of numbers, with another acronym: "sb"

Lisa re-read the sheet several times.

Universe is made of stories wk... wk... B128ei774 sb ... sb...

Lisa put her hands to her lips and let out a sigh.

Wk...stands for keyword... it's the password to access... Can it be? And sb... sb stands for Sarah Base!

Lisa Hayes' cheeks had turned pink, as she felt her heartbeat pulsing in her ears.

-Dr. Lang...

-Lieutenant Hayes, you coming?

-Yess! I am!

Lisa picked up the small paper and slipped it into the pocket of her camp uniform, then pulled on her jacket and carefully closed the door. Her footsteps echoed in the large hangar.

Downstairs, the jeep carrying Dr. Lang's recently arrived assistants, was parking. The two people sitting in the decompression boxes were stretching their arms and legs. Lisa and Lang, observed them from the upper gallery.

-Look who's coming out!

said Lang with a split smile.

-Now Zand will say that he still can't walk and wants a wheelchair, while Baltrow will slur him with some harsh jokes.

Lisa Hayes was surprised at the easiness of the scientist's words. But then again, none of them were military and they didn't have to undergo all those obligations in their speaking.

-Dr. Lang! Hey!

A blonde, young woman with curly, messy hair dressed in a big, de-icing jacket waved her hand from the lower floor.

-Can't believe the polar weather in this place!

-Haven't you considered that we ARE actually at the Pole?

A tall blond guy, with thick bizarre glasses and an even weirder haircut got out of the car and staggered around.

The blonde girl looked at him with a certain superiority

-Looks like you're still drunk!

The young man ran a hand through his hair and settled down against a pillar.

-Shut up for God's sake! It's your shrill voice that makes me dizzy.

In the meantime Lang, followed by a puzzled Lisa, had reached the parking lots.

-Dr. Lang, how could you have abandoned me all this time with this unbearable human being?

-Welcome to Alaska Base Dr. Bartlow!

Lang said warmly, stretching out his hand.

-I'm serious, you should test him for autism, or the truth is, maybe he's an android? A hybrid?

-Enough, Gina!

Zand stepped away from the pillar and stumbled towards them.

-Sometimes I think you're trying to seduce me...with a rather dorky technique I admit, but you know I'm a master at decrypting codes.

Gina Bartlow looked at him with hatred, her cheeks on fire and Lang couldn't help but burst out in muffled laughter.

-Welcome to you too Dr. Zand. I hope the trip was good. Not least because you won't have any time off from now.

Gina Bartlow just let out a snort while Zand simply looked like he was nursing a heavy hangover.

-Esteemed fellow scientists, I'd like to take advantage to introduce you to one of the tactical officers who will be attending the flight tests of the VF-0 Phoenix. She is Lieutenant Lisa Hayes.

Lisa saluted

-Very pleased to meet you doctors.

Gina Bartlow let out a little cry

-Uh Lisa Hayes! Admiral Hayes' daughter!? You mean...?

she glanced at Lang

-That Lisa Hayes?

Lisa frowned and Zand leaned forward.

-Dr. Bartlow is trying to say that she's really happy to meet you, Lieutenant Hayes.

Zand's gaze was as cold as ice.

-And me too of course. Pleased to meet you, I'm Lazlo Zand.

Lisa looked at him impressed by the scientist's blank face.

-We've all been hearing a lot about you.

Lang led the two scientists to the exit. The jeep that would take them to the dorms was already waiting at the end of the hangar.

-Lieutenant Hayes, can you start heading up to my office? I'll be right there.

said Lang casually as he simultaneously handed out instructions to the driver

- Meet you up here in twenty minutes ... okay?

-Of course Dr. Lang !

-See you soon!

Lisa was puzzled for a moment as she stared at them walking away. She instinctively brought a hand to the breast pocket where she had slipped the small sheet of paper.

Maybe Dr. Lang wants me to...

She silently slipped inside the elevator, while counting the number of her breaths.

It seemed that her head suddenly felt light. With caution she crossed the hallway again onto the balcony and entered Lang's office, silently closing the door behind her. As if in a sort of trance, wondering if by chance she would not be court martyaled for violating some unknown RDF policy, she sat in the swivel chair and switched on the big monitor. The unit was resting a few inches from her left hand. The led lights made her engagement ring glow.

With shaking hands, she unfolded the slip of paper and typed the codes on the keyboard as if she were fiddling with a strongbox. As soon as the last number was entered, the device spoke:

"You are connecting to Sarah Base, Mars, please press CONTINUE to start"

Lisa blushed violently trying to mute the device.

Her heart rate was sending out warning signals. Her hands and back were covered with a light coat of sweat.

"You are connecting to Sara Base, Mars. Please press CONTINUE to start the conversation"

Lisa's small forefinger landed on the screen, pressing on the "continue" icon.

For a few moments the monitor remained silent and Lisa could distinctly hear her own heart beating in her ears: then a slightly blurred image started to appear on the screen. Lisa could just view the shape of a head, and a shoulder. The owner of that head and shoulder seemed to be reaching for something on the floor.

His hair, it covered his entire forehead. Lisa stopped breathing, then heard his voice:

-Dr. Lang! What a surprise, I didn't expect to hear from you! what are you doing in Alaska Ba...

Suddenly his voice cracked now that he'd turned completely to screen.

Lisa Hayes lifted both hands to her mouth, choking back a sob.

He was right in front of her, albeit a thousand light years away. His eyes, sweet hazel eyes, looked at her in wonder as one can looks at a precious treasure, unique to the world.

-Lisa...

She instinctively raised her arms in front of her, moving her torso towards the screen and smiled through overflowing tears.

-Karl...

Alaska Base, UEG. One week later

Early in the morning Lisa Hayes had made her way back to the dorms, and quickly got dressed in her blue and black uniform. Her whole body still burned with excitement from seeing Karl on the screen once again. For both of them it had been a pleasant shock that had upset their respective perceptions of reality. In the turmoil of her heart, the one thing Lisa was sure was that she could never stop loving Karl Riber. She smiled as she checked herself out in the small bathroom mirror. Just a few months...just a few months and they would be together.

-You should definitely ask your dad to build you a private bathroom!

It was Claudia who had just climbed out of bed.

Lisa woke up from her daydream

-Oh... I'm sorry ... just leaving, Claudia

The two girls bumped into each other at the toilet door, Lisa perfectly dressed in her flawless uniform, Claudia just wearing an RDF t-shirt and a pair of hot pants: she threatened her with the toothbrush:

-I can't believe you're already dressed. How come you didn't wake me up?

-The flight tests in the atmosphere will start in a few minutes... with the new VF-0 Phoenix, you know...

said Lisa, not wanting to tell her friend about her little detour at dawn, in the hangar.

Claudia made a sick face.

-Ah sure! Roy Fokker's air circus stunts, how could I forget?

Lisa giggled a little

-Claudia!

-He just can't wait to show himself off with the High Command...

-What you mean?

- Get ready! With the luck you got, you'll have to lead him, Hayes, come on, let me in!

Then Claudia slammed the door almost on Lisa's nose, who stood still, thoughtful.

The control tower was on the main tarmac, just in front of the hangars that hosted the VF- 0 Phoenix prototypes. Lisa entered the bridge escorted by the officer in charge.

-Lieutenant Hayes, your position is number 1.

The bridge was semi-deserted, as usual she was early. Lisa picked up the tablet that had been set up for her, and placed a finger on the surface of the screen.

"Second Lieutenant Elizabeth Hayes welcome. You will direct the performance of the VF-0 Phoenix 1, codename Tweezer"

Lisa smiled amused

"Pilot, Lieutenant Commander Roy Fokker".

Lisa's smile slowly faded away

Claudia...you were right!

-Good morning everyone!

Dr. Lang entered in a daze, followed by Bartlow and Zand and 6 other assistants making a big noise. A few minutes later the other three air traffic control officers also walked in. Lisa immediately stood up and saluted her colleagues, three young men. They wore the regulatory blue and black uniform. Lisa quickly scanned the ranks on their shoulders, then her eyes lingered on the face of one of them. Black hair perfectly combed on the forehead, dark oriental eyes: a quiet, relaxed lgaze met hers. Lisa couldn't believe it, and big smile escaped her lips; she instinctively took a step towards him.

-Lisa Hayes!

said the young man

- I mean... Second Lieutenant Hayes.

-Alex Louan! Omg! Can't believe it!

The two walked up to each other

-It's more than two years...

Lisa nodded

-Yes... you got an assignment here?

- I always said I would end up as an air traffic controller... remember?

The two smiled affectionately, in complicity.

-Can I give you a hug?

Lisa nodded warmly

-You have to!

The two young officers locked in an emotion-filled embrace. It had been more than two years since they had seen each other in California.

Alex glanced back at his station.

-I'm at two.

-We are neighbors then!

replied Lisa enthusiastically.

-Let's see what I gotta do...

Alex put his forefinger on the designated pad: the screen lit up.

"Welcome Second Lieutenant Alexander Dean Louan. Your station is number two. VF-0 Phoenix 2, codenamed Gina, will be piloted by Third Lieutenant Jack Archer".

Alex Louan let out a whistle

-Woha. No shit, Jack Archer!?

He spoke rather in the room turned to stare at Alex and Lisa.

Alex blushed, then coughed and cleared his throat.

-Jack Archer...-muttered Lisa as if chasing a memory .

- Don't ya know who he is, Lisa? -whispered Alex, bending slightly towards her -the Giant Killer, himself!

Lisa had no time to answer because an officer entered the bridge with great emphasis shouting:

-Admiral on the deck!

All the crew squared up as Donald Hayes and his assistants stepped in.

The flight test was about to begin.

Claudia Grant closed the door to her room slowly, dragging her feet. Her shift was scheduled for noon and she planned to do some shopping in the stores around the base in the meanwhile.

-Hey, psst! Lieutenant Grant!

A familiar voice made her turn around.

Claudia completely rotated her head until she realized that the voice was coming from the front room.

-Melissa! what you up to?

Melissa was a Claudia's former fellow at the Robotech Academy. A little older than her, she was a karate athlete just like Lisa. They had sometimes confronted each other on the tatami.

She waved her hand at Claudia with conspiracy. Claudia looked at her suspiciously.

-What 's up now?

-The door next door, uh, come here, it's just opening!

Melissa pulled Claudia inside her room, as the door in front of them swung open and a 6'3" amazon with long platinum blonde hair walked into the doorway. She was wearing her camp uniform and had her hair down. She was so tall she looked quite scary.

Melissa stared into Claudia's eyes deeply

-Nora Polyanski ...-said with emphasis -The ace pilot...

-Phiuu nothing less!

retorted Claudia, still glancing at the athletic figure of the young woman walking down the hallway.

-There's a lot going on these days at the base in Alaska, isn't it? She came to fly the new variable fighters? It's going to be a hard slog for Lisa...

Melissa let out a giggle

-Not at all! She came as an "escort"! That's right señora- she nodded- Guess who's? Old DD Ivanov. She's his woman or whatever! He claimed to bring her here for the whole testing period!

DD Ivanov...

Claudia remembered him so clearly. the Instructor. For a moment distant memories flooded her mind.

-But that's not all! The lady is not pleased with the arrangement, you know! She ended up sharing a room with a newbie just arrived from Japan. They are already at each other's throats. Uh! Here she goes too! Look!

Claudia and Melissa carefully poked their heads out to watch as the door opened again, this time letting out a petite, slender girl in a regulatory uniform. She was wearing her hair in a bob that brushed her shoulders. Her face was tanned, with no make up. She slammed the door violently and rushed down the corridor like a hawk.

-A certain Izzy Randall. God, she really is a rude one. No wonder, she's from Jack Archer's squadron, the mercenary, you know.

Claudia grinned at Melissa's gift for gossip.

-Thank you for keeping up with me on the latest news at the base, Mel.

Claudia stepped the door and made her way out.

-Hey Grant! you going to attend the flight tests on the observation deck?

Claudia glanced back with an inquiring look.

-What makes you think that?

Melissa blushed

-Uh no.. nothing. Just saying...

Claudia silently walked away

-I don't like those two anyway, you know?

yelled Melissa. Her voice got lost in the stairwell.

The flight test of the new viarable fighters turned out a fiasco. Mainly because the helmets developed by Lang's team were constantly interfering in the comm between the pilots and the control tower. And there was another reason: Jack Archer. The pilot, who had been demoted two grades from the early days of VF-X, voluntarily ignored some of the officer's instructions and occasionally left the the scheduled fighter formation. In the process, the other pilots started to show signs of nervousness, as well as the bridge officers and the scientific crew. Admiral Hayes remained impassive throughout the entire simulation.

Lisa Hayes nearly ripped the headset off her head after giving the final order to land. With her fists clenched on the dashboard she was breathing heavily. She didn't dare look over her shoulder where the Admiral was seated. None of the missions had been completed, and especially the one for the main fighter, flown by Roy Fokker and led by her.

Lisa Hayes was fuming, but her friend and colleague Alex Louan was simply distraught. He was breathing shakily, his face pale and covered in sweat.

Lisa cast him a sympathetic look. Totally, Archer had been a pain in the ass.

-Bridge and bunk officers you are dismissed!

said Donald Hayes abruptly, as he got up from his command chair.

-Dr. Lang, Dr. Zand and Dr. Bartlow I'll meet you in my office in 10 minutes.

-Aye sir!

The entire room squared before Admiral Hayes leaving the bridge.

-Jeez... has been hard!

said Lisa moving closer to Alex.

He smiled sadly

-I guess after that I'll be sent straight to war field!

Lisa burst out laughing

-What you talking about Alex! It was the pilot who screwed up your work. Come on, let's go outside... shall we?

The air was chilly and the two young officers, wrapped in long fury jackets, warmed their hands over cups of hot tea. The natural scenery was stunning. Muffled sound of summer glaciers cracking could be heard in the distance.

-This place is awesome!

said Alex, captivated by the view

-Yes it is. But I miss California.

Lisa looked at him earnestly but Alex recognized a hint of sadness behind her magnetic eyes.

-I see...

then they both stood in silence, their breathing made little clouds of steam in the icy air.

-We had a blast though, the four of us. Me, you, Serena and Karl...

He suddenly said. Lisa blushed involuntarily

-Yes, we...

-I miss Karl... he was my best friend. Well, I mean... he still is.

The two of them went along the observatory walkway. Down below they could clearly see the airstrip where the Varitechs had just landed.

-I wonder why it had to be like this... I mean...

Lisa looked at him in confusion

-What do you mean by "like this"?

-Well I... it has not been easy for him to have to take that decision...

Lisa abruptly stopped walking

-What d'ya mean Alex? What "decision"?

Her eyes searched his with apprehension.

Lisa's gaze had the sheen of the ice surrounding them. Alex shivered

- Lisa, I...

But a sudden yell abruptly interrupted their talk -Alex Louan! Alex Louan! Is that you?!

The two officers turned their heads. A pilot, wearing his flight suit, was walking towards them with great strides.

-Hey I'm talking to you!

The man was something like over six feet tall: the muscles in his chest and arms seemed to be tearing through the nylon of his flight suit. His pitch-black hair fluttered on his forehead at every step. His eyebrows were furrowed and his eyes flashed with a sinister light. Everything about him was menacing.

-What d'ya think ya were doing up there?

shouted the man without much foreplay, bending straight into Louan's face.

Lisa was astounded. By the pilot's imposing look, his disrespectful rant and his incredible lack of regard for military protocol. Alex was so blindsided that he opened his mouth but couldn't utter a word. In an instant Lisa was seized with rage.

-Third Lieutenant! How dare you speak like that to your superior officer!

She placed herself between the two standing up in all her height and looking fiercely into Archer's eyes.

There was dignity and supreme contempt in her gaze.

The pilot was taken aback by Lisa's statement that he too stood speechless for a moment. He looked at her as if he hadn't noticed her until that moment. Then his brow frowned. A grimace crossed his face when he realized that those two kids were higher in rank than him.

Listlessly and with a mocking attitude he brought a hand to his forehead.

-Aye ma'am! To whom do I have the pleasure of speaking?

Lisa clenched her teeth.

-Hayes! I'm Second Lieutenant Hayes! At ease!

At hearing that name, Archer's mind was crossed with shreds of memories. His face showed sincere astonishment. For long moments he remained silent, then opened his mouth to said only:

-Elizabeth?

Lisa frowned, feeling a strange sense of deja vu. She looked at him in shock.

-How do you know my name?

to be continued

Notes:

1- Melissa is a character featured in the novel "Misa Hayase- White Reminiscences" written by Hiroshi Ônogi in 1984. She is Misa's fellow student and friend at the Military Academy

*2-I've always dreamed of having that holographic stuff since I saw Star Wars as a kid, lol!*

3-"Tavvauvutit" means good-bye in the Inuktitut language, spoken in Alaska

4- They are all main characters from the 2002 Macross Zero OVA. Dr. Aries Turner is Roy Fokker's love interest while Shin Kudo is a fellow pilot at Asuka aircraft carrier and DD Ivanov and Nora Polyansky are both ace-pilots and antagonists. DD was also Roy Fokker's former mentor.

5- Quote from episode 28 of SDF Macross. Roy speaks to Hikaru in a flashback

6-Quote from episode 11 of SDF Macross. Hikaru says these rather chauvinistic words during an argument with Misa

7-Gina Baltrow is chief engineer (that is to say Lang himself) female counterpart in the manga Macross the First by Haruhiko Mikimoto (released between 2009 and 2018 and sadly on hiatus). Here she is Lang's assistant alongside Laslo Zand, that actually is from Robotech canon.

8-I chose to use Macross age gap between Lisa and Rick instead of the Robotech one. So here Lisa is 2 years and 8 months older than him.
