Next day it was raining but Mainwaring still had the men out on endurance. Getting in that night Joe was glad of the whisky Jess poured him. Oh Joe you're soaked she said, you all right you look a bit pale.

I'm just tired he said, my backs killing me I wonder why he laughed and I'm freezing. Come here you little minx he said recovering enough to kiss her

As they got into bed Jess noticed Joes knee was all bandaged and bleeding. Oh Joe why didn't you say anything. I did it on parade, shifting the vicars piano, it'll be fine. You're never going on that march tomorrow are you.

Well of course he was. Jess had a sense of foreboding, Joe had a fever but hid it. That afternoon when she saw a commotion and people running to the beach her stomach flipped. At the scene she saw Pike was stuck in a hole. She was relieved when crowds dispursed laughing.

However he really was stuck and there were landmines. Her Joe was the one straining to help Pike. Eventually he freed him but collapsed on the sand. Arthur Wilson tried to help him up. As Jess got to him, he was nearly passing out. He was a bit delirious and said to Arthur Make sure my Harry is looked after. Sharing a look and glancing at Jess she knew Arthur being a man of the world at once guessed it all but wouldn't tell a soul.

Jess prayed at the hospital he would be OK. The platoon were besides themselves.

The morning brought great news Joe had recovered. Jess ran in and flung her arms around Joe. Dont ever leave me and our baby she said touching her stomach. Joe grinned his cheeky smile. Everything was going to be ok
