Stay
All the others were, of course, like they should also be at the moment, dancing, laughing and making small-talk downstairs, enjoying their time, celebrating the night of the Jubilee. But unlike the others, the two young detectives Betty and Jughead had found their way upstairs into a quiet and dim room, escaping away from all the loud noise and the excited crowd. The night had already been crazy enough, so the lack of silence and time to themselves was fastly approaching the point of becoming completely unbearable. Some personal time for both of them was more than welcome. It was more likely needed.
Jughead and Betty sat on an old couch made from rough textile in the only empty room that could be found in the large house. The couch was making an annoying grumpy noise after every movement that had been produced sitting on it. Betty and Jughead sat in an unusual silence near the both ends of the couch, making sure to keep as much distance as possible between the two of them. The night of the Serpent dance was rewinding non-stop in both of their heads. Their conversation spoken outside the White Wyrm echoed loudly and clearly in their minds, that had become overcrowded with other things over the past few days. That night reminded them of why they were like this.
The feeling that both Betty and Jughead were experiencing at the moment was strange. They had long ago gotten used to the feeling of the others' presence comforting and warm around them, being so close to each other with endless things to say. The situation now was very very unfamiliar and uncomfortable. They both had so many things to apologise to the other, but neither of them could come to the point of saying them. What now was happening though just seemed so wrong. Just a few days ago they had still been kissing and hugging, cherishing each other, worshipping each other. Now none of that was possible.
Many other things were also so strange — the awkward silence that had fallen between them for the first time, stretching as the time went by. The silence that was also deadly, killing some piece of their souls after every minute that passed. Both of them were waiting, anticipating for the other one to break it first. Maybe the silence could have ended sooner, but if they were being completely truthful, neither one knew really what to say.
Jughead chose to be the braver one this time and after taking a short quivering inhale, and secretly eyeing Betty from the corner of his eye, he broke the silence. The blade had sliced the thin ice. He voiced out the first thing he could think of.
"Good old Hiram Lodge, who knows what he's planning for the South Side." After he had finished, he wanted to mentally slap himself across the face. Why hadn't he chosen any other topic that moved on neutral grounds, something like how were things at home? Not what was the new wicked plan of Hiram Lodge. Not something that reminded them of the miseries of life, all the unsolved bad things happening outside the house.
Jughead swore that the silence was literally killing him from inside. He definitely without hesitation missed the relaxed and warm conversations they used to have all the time in the Blue and Gold office. At that time they didn't need to think of any subject to talk about, they had endless things to say that usually they forgot to discuss about something, never the other way around.
"Yeah, maybe we could ask Veronica on Monday..." Betty answered after a shaky breath trailing off instantly. The anxiety in the air hadn't left yet. "Yeah, I think we should first just, you know, just investigate quietly until we know more. We haven't saved the trailer park yet..." This time it was Jughead's turn to trail off after he had said his opinions.
The unfamiliar awkwardness was like poison in the air. "And I'm on probation from the Serpents, whatever it means, after what I did to Penny." The picture of a Penny without the Serpent tattoo flashed in both of their minds. Jughead didn't know what it was, but he still felt necessary to tell these things to Betty. Despite what he had said to Betty earlier — to not mind about anything revolving the Serpents.
"Oh." As much as Juggie had told Betty to not mind his business, the news was still worrying Betty, so her answer naturally came out as a gasp. Betty knew how much Jughead cared about the Serpents, how he would sacrifice a lot for them. The news must have been devastating for Juggie. No matter what would happen between them, for Betty, if Jughead was miserable, Betty wouldn't be happy either. Even if Betty wasn't so thrilled about the gang's activities, if this was what Jughead wanted, Betty would support him. She always would. Through thick and thin.
Unfortunately the list of possible topics for conversation were becoming very scarce. "Um, I should probably start heading home. You know Alice." The awkwardness and being so close to Jughead, but still so far away was suffocating Betty. She needed to get out of the house, before she would be digging her nails into her palms. Her mom Alice, was just a minor excuse at the moment.
"Or you could stay…" Now Jughead had given up on resisting on keeping distance from Betty and he subconsciously placed his hand on Betty's pink dress. He could already feel the warmth of Betty beneath his finger tips. He could feel Betty. Oh, how much he missed the feeling of her skin so close to his. Jughead found himself wanting to take of the last piece of clothing between them to be near enough to each other.
The moment Juggie had placed his hand on Betty, she had also given up the mental fight inside her head. Screw it what happened before. They were meant to be together. Jughead and Betty were endgame. They would always be. Partners in life, in Serpent, in everything, right? Betty had already started to lean in closer to Jughead. She had moved quickly without herself noticing and the next moment she was sitting on Jughead's lap straddling him. In an instant his sweet lips were on Betty's, making the outside world fade away from them. Betty's hands had also found their way beneath Jughead's signature wool beanie, her fingers raking through his messy hair pulling at some places. The two kissed like there was no tomorrow. They craved each other like they hadn't seen each other in years.
After that night, they knew that nothing was ever again capable of making these two leave each other. After all, they were a team, right? They are the two detectives that knew how to fix each other and mend each other's wounds. They are BUGHEAD.
