McCoy was enjoying some peace and quiet, for a change. He had finished all of his paper work and had completed all his physical and medical examinations for the whole crew, just in time for their next five year mission to begin in a matter of hours. He had just shut his eyes to take a quick power nap when the door to his office slid open, the person who had entered chuckled quietly. "Tired are we Bones?" McCoy opened one of his eyes to see Kirk standing in the doorway, "So what if I am? You try doing 430 examinations and see if you're tired at the end of it all Jim?" McCoy replied grumpily.

Kirk knew that McCoy was just being his normal self so didn't take anything to heart, "Well then you won't like what I got to say then." McCoy just grumbled. "We have one more crew member to be beamed aboard, so they will need to have an examination as well." Kirk announced, McCoy simply rolled his eyes. "Fine, but you own me a drink for this Jim." Kirk smiled, "Of course Bones, the officer should be beaming aboard in a few minutes. Care to join me in welcoming them?" McCoy stood up from his chair, "Might as well. At least that way I can guarantee they won't try and worm their way out of their examination… Unlike someone else I know." Kirk had a pretty good guess as to who the Doctor was referring to.

The two of them left sick bay and made their way down the halls towards the transporter room, "Take it Chekov didn't wanna come down to sick bay for his examination?" Kirk grinned; McCoy sighed. "Of course, he didn't Jim! You know how Pavel is, it took both me and Scotty to drag him out from the Jefferies Tube outside of the Observation deck, even then we had to bribe the kid to come with us back to sick bay." Kirk tried his best to hold back his laughter, it was a well-known fact that Chekov didn't like going to the Doctor's and he would often have to be dragged to his appointments by McCoy, but Kirk had never heard of him having to be bribed before.

"What did you and Scotty bribe him with exactly?" McCoy turned to face Jim as they stood outside the doors which led to the transporter room, "We told him that he could keep the bottle of authentic Russian Vodka that I found hidden in his room." Kirk couldn't hold back his laughter anymore, "That's a sign he's been hanging around with Scotty too much if he was so easily bribed by alcohol." McCoy agreed, he always knew that the Scotsman was a bad influence on the kid but yet again Chekov was onboard the Enterprise so someone was bound to be one, even if Scotty wasn't.

The doors opened and the two officer stepped in. The officer who was operating the transporter saluted at his Captain, "The new crew member will be ready to transport over shortly Sir." Kirk looked around the room as if he was looking for something. "Ensign, where's Mr Scott? I asked him to be here for this." Kirk asked the Ensign who was quick to reply, "Mr Scott has got caught up with something in Engineering, he asked me to inform you upon your arrival Sir." Kirk just sighed; he should have known that something would come up. He wanted his Chief Engineer here since the new officer was going to be working under him.

There was then an audible 'beep' from the control panel, "They are ready to beam aboard Captain." Kirk nodded at the Ensign to continue, then lent over to whisper something into McCoy's ear. "Remind me to have a word with our Scotsman down stairs." McCoy just nodded, as the doors behind them opened and in walked Spock. "Is there a problem here Captain?" He asked calmly, "Not at all Spock, you're just in time to meet our new officer." Kirk replied cheerfully. Spock stood beside his Captain while McCoy was on the other. They watched the transporter like hawks, watching its prey. Swirls of light soon appeared on one of the pads and a few seconds later a person materialised in front of them.

The recruit turned to face the group, "Permission to come abord Captain?" Kirk smiled, in their voice was a hint of an accent, one the Captain was very familiar with. "Permission granted." The officer then stepped down from the transporter and stood to attention in front of their superior officers. The new officer was a young woman, with red hair which was up neatly in a bun. Her uniform was pristine, not a single crease in sight. The boots she wore were so polished they acted like mirrors and her badge glistened in the light. Kirk could tell just by how she looked that she must take pride in her work.

She then saluted. "Lieutenant Lexie Smith reporting Sir." "At ease Lieutenant." Kirk said softly, out of the corner of his eye he could see a very familiar look on the Doctor's face. "Allow me to introduce myself formally. I'm Captain James T Kirk, this is the ship's Chief Medical Officer Doctor Leonard McCoy." He gestured over to McCoy who simply nodded, "And this is my First Officer Mr Spock." Kirk then gestured to the Vulcan who stood on the other side, Lexie raised her hand and did the Vulcan salute which Spock repeated. "You honour me Lieutenant." He said as he lowered his hand back to rest at his side, Lexie simply smiled in reply, knowing full well that the Vulcan wouldn't smile back.

It was then that Kirk noticed her eyes, they were two completely different colours. Her left eye was yellow while her right eye was blue. "Your eyes are very unique." He stated trying not to sound rude. "Thank you Captain." Spock raised a single eyebrow, "I have never met a human with two different coloured eyes. Fascinating." McCoy rolled his own eyes at the Vulcan's comment. Kirk quickly moved things along, before his two friends could start arguing since they would have plenty of time to do that when their mission started.

"Your Commanding Officer will introduce himself shortly, sadly he was dragged away but for now Doctor McCoy needs you in sick bay for a physical and medical examination, all routine of course." Lexie nodded, "Of course Captain, I understand." McCoy unfolded his arms as he turned around, "Come along then." Lexie followed McCoy out of the room leaving Kirk and Spock alone, "She seems like she will be a valuable member of the crew Captain." Spock stated, Kirk nodded in agreement. "Yes, she does give off a good first impression but we will only see how good she is when she begins her work." Spock nodded, "A most logical assumption Captain."

Lexie had finished her physical examination a few moments ago and McCoy was pleased to tell her that she past that with flying colours. Now he was conducting his medical exam, "I've never known of any Star Fleet officers who have Heterochromia Iridum." McCoy stated as he shone a bright light into Lexie's left eye, the yellow pigment seemed to glow from the light. "I was told at the Academy that I am the only one Sir, but I believe there have been officers before me, it's just that my Heterochromia Iridum is so noticeable." McCoy moved to shine the light in her other eye which also seemed to glow.

"That's very possible, I've met people with your condition before, but I must say you are the first one to have two completely different eye colours. Which are beautiful by the way." McCoy replied as he placed down his light, "Thank you Doctor." McCoy turned back to her with his PADD in his hand, "You don't have to call me Doctor all the time Lieutenant, McCoy is fine." Lexie blushed slightly. McCoy was reading through her Star Fleet medical file when he suddenly turned to face her. "This can't be right. How old are you?" "Eighteen." McCoy blinked a couple of times; she was only a year older than Chekov had been when he started out on the Enterprise. 'These recruits are getting way too young.' McCoy thought to himself as he continued on with his medical.

McCoy was almost finished with Lexie's medical. "Right then, all I have left to do is listen to your heart and if that's all well and good then you'll be all done." Lexie nodded slowly; this was the part she had been dreading. Not because she had a problem with her heart, it was something else that bothered her. "If you would prefer one of my female nurses to conduct this then that's absolutely fine." McCoy stated, he always offered his female patients this choice as he knew that some woman felt more comfortable with a female medic. Lexie really wanted to say yes, well she really wanted to say no to having it done at all but she knew that she was going to be on the ship for the next five years with McCoy so there was no way of avoiding him doing this type of thing.

"No, it's alright McCoy. You can do it." She replied softly. McCoy nodded, he then turned around to give Lexie some privacy so she could remove her shirt. McCoy turned back around after grabbing his stethoscope and getting the ok from his patient. When he turned around he spotted something which caught his attention, there was a scar on Lexie's stomach and it wasn't a little one either, it was about three inches long. It also didn't look very old, to McCoy it only looked about three years old. Lexie knew that McCoy had seen her scar, it was kind of hard to miss. She prayed he didn't ask how she got it as that was a memory she tried her hardest to forget. Thankfully, McCoy didn't ask, he knew better than to ask his patients how they got their scars.

He gave her the all clear and turned back around to allow her to put her shirt back on, which she did quickly. "You're all done Lieutenant. I suggest you head off to your quarters and start settling in, I'll inform the Captain that you are there. I'm sure he'll get your Commanding Officer to pop by." Lexie slipped her foot back into her boot, "Of course and thank you McCoy." The two officers shared a smile before Lexie left.
