Hey guys! Extra, extra-long chapter today, this is because it has been four days since I updated. I'm going straight to answering reviews now. Six for one chapter, all I have to say is... thank you!
Jo: First review~ Oh that's really cool! I have a secret to reveal; I write most of my stories on my phone. But anyway, I'm glad it's perfect timing! Yeah, I completely forgot that there were ten books. Eh well, I'll have them discover it later. Yes, I'm going to have a special entrance for the book I didn't know existed, I love being a writer, when you make mistakes you can just edit them out. Yeah, I always imagined everyone hating Smirt because of the way she treated Sabrina and Daph. I don't know, the only way to short Basil is Baz and I like nicknames. Literally, the only reason, I'm a very strange person. Yeah, I have a lot of possible word things that are weird. I ship all the ships you mentioned, is that weird? Ped's a good ship as well. Definitely something besides just books. Maybe a movie and tv-show and graphic novels? Well, maybe one day. Second Review~ I was laughing for so long when I read your review, I guarantee my mom thinks I'm nuts now. And your review was strange, but I'm used to that by now. Nothing can surprise me. *Puck dancing in a hula skirt while Sabrina mimes being trapped in a box* *Me, sipping orange juice calmly*.
Zay Zay: First Review~ Thank you, and your murder threats definitely didn't majorly influence me writing this story, no waaaay. Yeah, definitely a way. I am really glad you like the reactions. You and Jo have the most hilarious reviews ever! I love Tangled, I really do, it's one of my favorite Disney movies. Back to something to do with your review. That was the longest scream ever reviewed on my story. Two hours? How have your parents not called the special people at least 300000000000000000000000000000 times is beyond me. Well, strange=awesome so your fine. Speaking of awesome, both you and Jo are! You have stuck with me for like four stories! Thank you so much! I'm starting to think I like all ships that involve Daphne and Red, not together as in I ship Dapherseed, Dinnochio, Daphnell(Daphne and Wendall). And then I also like Ped, Med, and even some Wed (Wendell and Red, I don't hate it.). I will do that, I forgot on the last chapter, whoops! Second Review~ Thank you, Zay Zay, very much.
L: One~ Jake did not know they called themselves orphans because he only came into their lives after they'd learned that their parents had been kidnapped. In case you don't know, the definition of an orphan is if both parents are dead or presumed dead. Two~ Henry is a good parent but he can sometimes say idiotic things that he really should not say, read the books if you're unsure about this fact. And three~ I don't mind criticism if it is constructive criticism, not just mindless dislike. No one had a gun to your head making you read my story. If you do not like it, then don't read it. And if you don't like how I write then don't read it.
Caramel and Opal: I'm glad you like it and want more chapters! Thanks for your review Caramel and Opal!
Disclaimer: I don't own the Sisters Grimm, is it bad I'm imagining that with a little tune and dance added it? Yeah, it probably is.
Well, that's it for the A/N, hope you enjoy this chapter!
She seemed to especially dislike the Grimm sisters and had labeled them rude, uncooperative and a couple of know-it-alls.
Puck finally turned back into the story to hear this and he burst into laughter. And then quickly stopped when he caught Sabrina's hot, angry look.
.
So, Sabrina was sure it was Ms. Smirt's personal mission to get the girls out of the orphanage and into a foster home. So far she had failed miserably. She'd sent them to live with people who were usually mean and occasionally crazy, and who had used them as maids, house sitters, or just plain ignored them.
"What?"Henry interrupted, volatile-like.
"They weren't too bad,"Daphne shrugged.
Puck's emerald eyes spotted Sabrina's shudder and contradicted, "Not sure if your sister agrees."
Sabrina looked up, embarrassed, "They weren't physically abusive."
"You emphasized physically,"Jake said.
Relda looked at her granddaughter lovingly and interrupted, "Let's not embarrass Sabrina, continue Veronica."
But this time she had gone too far. This time Ms. Smirt was sending them to live with a dead woman.
"AWESOME!"Puck yelled, Basil jumped up and down.
"Did she really?"Red asked.
"Of course not, Dad told me and Daphne that Granny had died before we were born. That's all I meant."
"You idiot!"Jake hit his brother, Veronica also smacked him before turning back to the book. Relda simply stared down at her son and Mr. Canis raised an eyebrow.
"I hope you don't bother your grandmother with all these ridiculous questions!" Ms. Smirt said curtly, which was how she said most things to Sabrina and Daphne. "She is old and cannot handle a lot of trouble."
The entire Grimm family including the adopted family, burst into uncontrollable laughter at this.
"She's dead! I've already told you a million times, our grandmother is dead!" said Sabrina.
"We did a background check, Sally," Ms. Smirt replied. "She is who she says she is."
"Like, the only one who was,"Sabrina scoffed.
"Calm, sister,"Red said soothingly.
Daphne agreed.
"I'm sure there was one that was honest,"Puck said finally, he said this over Basil's hair as the seven-year-old now perched on Puck's lap.
"Nope,"Sabrina andswered.
"My name is Sabrina." Sabrina sighed.
"It's actually Grimm." Veronica looked ready to strangle the fairy boy.
"Whatever. The orphanage would not release you into just anyone's custody," said Ms. Smirt.
"Oh really? How about Ms. Longdon, who swore her toilet was haunted?" said Sabrina.
"That's just hilarious,"Puck said.
"Not when she tried to sacrifice us!"Daphne argued.
"What?"Jake and Henry demanded together.
"Seriously, lieblings?"Relda asked, concerned.
"Oh my sweethearts, I am so sorry,"Veronica said.
"That's not so hilarious,"Puck voiced. No one else could add to this so Veronica, reluctantly, resumed her reading.
"Everyone has their quirks."
"Or Mr. Dennison, who made us sleep in his truck?" Daphne chimed in.
"That would not have been as horrible as it was if it hadn't been winter with no heater,"Sabrina remembered.
"Were you very cold?"Red questioned.
"Yes, but never freezing,"Daphne chimed in.
"Mom would never let us freeze,"Basil exclaimed.
"No good guardian would,"Mr. Canis said.
"Some people love the great outdoors."
"Mr. and Mrs. Johnson handcuffed us to a radiator!" Sabrina cried.
This seemed to be a breaking point for none other than Puck.
"Okay that is waaay too far."
"Didn't know you cared,"Sabrina shot back.
"There are a lot of things you don't know about me, Grimm."
"We all agree with you, Puck, but no fighting,"Jake intercepted.
"Same to you, Sabrina,"Veronica agreed.
Sabrina scowled as she leaned back in her chair.
"Dwell on the negative if you choose," said Ms. Smirt, "But you should be grateful. There is not much of a demand for rude little girls. Imagine how embarrassed I was when I heard what you said to the Keatons!"
"Well we did choose you evil, evil, witch!"Sabrina murmured.
"They locked us in their house for two weeks so they could go on a cruise to Bora-Bora," Sabrina said.
"Without a guardian?"Mr. Canis demanded.
"Yes, wonderful caretakers,"Daphne said sarcastically.
"Not particularly,"Henry growled.
"Not so indeed,"Puck muttered, looking angrier and angrier.
"It was Bermuda, and at least they brought you back some nice T-shirts from their trip," said Ms. Smirt.
"She didn't even do anything about it?"Relda exclaimed.
"That is basically illegal!"Veronica scowled.
"It actually legally is, it's negligence and abuse,"Jake put in. The family bristled. Save Sabrina, Daphne, and Red.
"Anyway, it is all water under the bridge now. We found a real relative who is actually eager to take you into her home. But to be honest, girls, even if she was an imposter I would hand you over to her. We have run out of families who want you." With that, Ms. Smirt put her nose back into her book. Sabrina looked up at the title. It was called How to Get the Love You Want.
"Oh, you evil witch, say that again,"Veronica hissed.
"It's just a book, Auntie,"Red reminded her.
"Yes, it cannot hurt anyone. Anyone, ever again,"Puck said purposefully.
"Little bit of humor, How to Get the Love You Want? Really?"Daphne asked incredulously. This brought up a few chuckles.
"What's an imposter?" Daphne asked, not bothering to turn her head away from the view through the window.
"It means someone who is pretending to be someone she's not," Sabrina said as she watched the rain outside.
"Oh crap, I hate my former inner monologue,"Sabrina whispered.
"Why?"Mr. Canis asked.
"You'll hear,"Sabrina said with a sigh.
It had been raining the day her parents had disappeared. That was over a year and a half ago, but it still made her heart ache. She remembered rushing home that afternoon with a report card safely tucked inside her raincoat. Excited about her As in math and English and her B in Science (and a little disappointed by her C-minus in gym), she had proudly taped it to the refrigerator for everyone to see.
"C-minus?"Henry asked, raising one eyebrow.
"I punched a couple of people in the face,"Sabrina supplied.
"Sabrina!"Veronica groaned.
"Sorry Mom."
"Jeez, remember, it was ten years ago,"Daphne reminded them all.
"Ten years? Really? That means it's been eight since I met Grimm and you,"Puck said in disbelief.
"Lordie,"Red exclaimed. This proclamation seemed to sum up everything else.
It had seemed odd that her parents weren't home from work, but Sabrina didn't worry until Daphne's kindergarten teacher called to find out why no one had picked up the little girl. That night the girls had slept in their parents' bed, waiting for them to come home as thunder and lightning crashed in the sky around their apartment. When the social worker came three days later to take them away, it was still raining, and Sabrina's report card was still hanging on the refrigerator awaiting its praise. For all Sabrina knew, it was still there.
"It's not,"Relda commented.
"True, someone else lives there now,"Sabrina stretched and yawned, rubbing her eyes.
The police had started an investigation. They searched the family's New York City apartment for clues. They interviewed neighbors and coworkers. They dusted for fingerprints and filed reports, but they found nothing. Henry and Veronica Grimm had simply vanished into thin air. Months later the police found their abandoned car. The only clue was a blood red handprint on the dashboard.
Everyone shuddered as they recalled the horrible mark of the Scarlet Hand that still haunted their dreams and memories.
The police assured the girls that the print was not blood, only paint, but they still had no leads. Their investigation had come to a dead end. Meanwhile, the orphanage where the girls had been taken began an investigation of its own, searching for next-of-kin, but came up as empty as the police. No aunts, uncles, grandparents, brothers, sisters, or even distant twice-removed cousins existed. The girls' parents had always told them that they were all the family they would ever need.
"Idiot!"Jake smacked his brother again and this time, Granny slapped the back of his head. Veronica was the one glaring at him.
So naturally, the girls were shocked when a woman claiming to be "Grandma Grimm" applied for custody.
"Granny Grimm, actually, not Grandma,"Red intervened. Her sisters, Sabrina and Daphne, chuckled at this.
Now the train pulled into a station and Daphne turned away from the window, cupped her hand over Sabrina's ear and whispered, "Do you think that she could really be our grandmother? Dad said she died before we were born."
"Yes, and if I weren't a snob at this point I would've seen how similar she and Dad were,"Sabrina commented. Daphne silently agreed with the 'snob at this point' comment.
"Not a chance," Sabrina said as the train came to a stop. "Don't worry, we'll be gone before the crazy old bat knows what happened."
"Crazy old bat… that has potential,"Puck pondered.
"No. Way,"Jake told him firmly.
Passengers got up from their seats and took their bags down from the luggage racks above. They tossed half-read newspapers onto the coffee-stained floor and headed for the doors. A conductor announced that Ferryport Landing was the last stop.
"Indeed it was,"Red agreed, referring to how the Grimms had never again left Ferryport Landing. Except for Jake and Puck but they came back.
"Ladies, let's go!" Ms. Smirt ordered, causing Sabrina's stomach to flip-flop. She didn't want to meet the imposter posing as her grandmother, but Ms. Smirt wasn't one to argue with. The old crone had a reputation as a pincher and she had left more than a few nasty purple bruises on back-talking orphans.
"If I ever get my hands on this woman she'll have more than a few nasty bruises,"Puck growled.
"Let me help,"Henry agreed.
"Don't forget about me!"Veronica said and Jake nodded his assent.
"Now, now, no killing,"Granny interrupted.
"I can hide the body…"Mr. Canis offered.
"We have the best family ever!"Daphne said excitedly to Sabrina.
"I know,"Sabrina smiled and brushed back her hair, "Hey Mom, let Red take over. You okay with that, Capri?"
"Sure,"Red answered, Capri or Capricorn was a nickname that Daphne had tried out that had just stuck.
Sabrina stood up on her seat, dragged their two tiny suitcases down from the storage racks above, and followed Ms. Smirt and Daphne off the train.
The late November rain was bitingly cold. Daphne began to shiver so Sabrina wrapped her arm around her sister's shoulders and held her tightly as they stood with Ms. Smirt on the crowded platform.
"When you meet her you had better be polite or there is going to be trouble," Ms. Smirt said. "No sass, no back talk, stand up straight, and act like young ladies for once, or so help me I'll-"
"You'll what?"Relda spat.
"Sure about the no killing?"Jake ventured.
"I'll start thinking about it,"Relda answered.
"I love you all!"Basil piped up suddenly. No one knew what to do with this except to allow Red to continue reading.
"Ms. Smirt?" a voice interrupted the caseworker's threat.
"Granny!"three voices exclaimed, guess whose they were.
The girls looked up to find a chubby old woman standing in front of them. She was dressed in an ankle-length, navy blue dress with a white knitted shawl around her shoulders. Her long, gray hair was streaked with red, hinting at its original color, and she wore it tightly tucked under a matching navy blue hat with an applique of a big fuzzy sunflower in the middle. Her face was a collection of wrinkles and sagging skin. Nevertheless, there was something youthful about it. Perhaps it was the old woman's red cheeks and clear, green eyes.
"What a lovely description,"Relda smiled.
"Really?"Puck let slip.
"Your description isn't much better, if I Recall,"Sabrina informed him.
"Oh come on Grimm, I'm the most beautiful creature in the world,"Puck argued.
"Not at that time,"Sabrina said and then, "And not now." No one seemed to catch the fact she'd only barely covered up the fact she'd called Puck 'beautiful'.
Next to her stood the skinniest man Sabrina had ever seen.
He had a full head of untamed platinum hair and enormous, watery eyes buried beneath eyebrows that were in desperate need of a trim. He wore a dark pinstripe suit that was several sizes too big and held a wide umbrella in one hand and his hat in the other.
"Mr. Canis,"Red grinned.
"I suppose so,"Mr. Canis echoed.
Ms. Smirt gave the girls a hard pinch on the shoulder, which acted as a warning to behave, and, Sabrina suspected, a last opportunity to inflict some pain.
"Okay! That is it! Where should we hide her body?"Relda demanded.
"There's a ditch a while away from the orphanage, I'm sure more than a few bodies have been dropped there,"Sabrina informed them.
"That's… pleasant,"Red said sarcastically.
"Yes, Mrs. Grimm, it's us,"Ms. Smirt said, forcing her usual frown into a smile.
"Sabrina? Daphne?" The woman cried with a hint of a German accent. "Oh you are both so beautiful. What little darlings! I'm your Grandmother Grimm." She wrapped her chubby arms around the girls and hugged them tightly. The girls squirmed to escape. But the old woman was like an over-affectionate octopus hugging them and kissing them on their heads and shoulders.
"Well, liebling, I never knew you had such a knack for language,"Granny said admiringly.
"Thanks."
"Mrs. Grimm, it's so nice to meet you," Ms. Smirt interrupted. Mrs. Grimm raised herself up to her height, which wasn't very high, and cocked her eyebrow at the caseworker. Sabrina could have sworn she saw the old woman smirk.
"Smirk? Me, never!"Relda exclaimed.
Henry and Jake snorted in unison, "Oh yeah? What about that teacher who you really hated of Jake's, you were always rolling your eyes and smirking at her."Henry pointed out.
"Shush, boys, let Red continue."Relda said, blushing.
"Is that where 'brina got her eye-rolling thing?"Daphne asked.
"If I had to bet I would bet that was from her mother,"Puck interrupted.
"How do you figure?"Red asked.
"Because Veronica is waaaaay scarier than Henry." No one could argue with this statement, not even Veronica.
That's it until next time. Which, I should be getting the next chapter out by the 11th or 12th. I really hope you enjoyed it!
