It's a normal early February day at Hexside, as normal as it gets anyway. In between classes, Amity rushes through the halls, looking for someone. No, not Luz. But it is about her girlfriend...
"Gus, what do you know about human Valentine's Day" Amity asks, trying, and failing, to sound casual as she bursts into the otherwise empty classroom.
"Why" he asks with surprise.
"Well, I know it's coming up, I want to surprise Luz, and I know nothing about it" Amity admits, her pride wounded. Luz had brought it up in passing yesterday. Her girlfriend had tried to make it sound like it wasn't a big deal, but Amity suspected she cared more than she'd admit.
Gus pulls several books out of his bag, making Amity even more aware of the time. He searches through them for several seconds before presenting a page to Amity.
Humans mainly celebrate Valentine's Day by giving those they love their heart. We don't know whether this means humans can survive without their hearts until they can grow a new one, or if they have two and can survive with only one until the other grows back. In either case, it's thought that being without a heart must weaken humans in some way. It's possible that by giving such a vital part of themselves to the subject of their affections, the human shows how much they care about the recipient through their willingness to sacrifice for them.
They also give flowers, thought to be eaten to speed up the regrowth of lost hearts. Chocolate is also popular. The smell helping to cover up that of the decomposing heart, as custom requires it be left on display for the duration of the holiday.
Amity ruminated on what to do. She didn't have a second heart to give Luz. Maybe she'd give her something else in the shape of a heart. She also wondered what flowers Luz would like the taste of, and what chocolate smelled the best. She went over the part about sacrifice repeatedly, thinking of ways she could show that to her girlfriend.
Her thoughts are interrupted by the school bell, forcing her to thank Gus and get to class.
That weekend, Amity makes her way into town on a mission, get Luz Valentines presents. She's not yet decided on exactly what she's looking for, but flowers and chocolate will do for a start.
She finds a florist and despairs. All the flowers look ready to eat rather than be eaten. She supposed she could kill them, but how to do it without leaving them tasting foul? She scanned the selection, coming across a set of red flowers looking far to non-threating for the Isles. Roses, their tag said. She enquired with the storekeeper.
"Those? They're from the human world, got the seeds from a lady in the market".
Amity goes to pick them up, then notices the thorns covering their stems. She hesitates. Eating them would hurt. Unless she clipped them off. It would take a while, but she would do it, for Luz.
One down.
She found a chocolate shop and started smelling the various items on offer, the stall keeper giving her a strange look. She notices the hot-chocolate drinks steaming on the counter, and an idea strikes her. She would make Luz a home-made hot chocolate. No, she'd do better. A hot-chocolate, and a cake. But the drink would get cold quickly. Unless…
She hunts through the town for all the ingredients she'll need, remembering Luzs' favourite flavours, and for once grateful for the allowance her parents give her.
On the Friday before Valentine's Day, Amity and Luz meet in the halls of Hexside.
"Hi, are you free on Sunday" both ask simultaneously, causing both to laugh.
"You first" they both insist, with Willow giving both a look of utter disbelief.
"Are you free on Sunday"? Luz asks, after Amity silently points at her.
"I've got some time before dinner, you" Amity smiles.
"Likewise. So, how about you come over to the Owl House. I promise Hooty will behave" Luz adds with puppy dog eyes, which she's learned Amity has trouble saying no to.
"I'd love to. And if we need more time, how about meeting after school on Monday" Amity suggests.
"Great idea" Luz smiles, which, as usual, gives Amity butterflies.
The school bell rings, forcing the couple to part for now.
The next morning Amity is in the Kitchen, every bit of her concentration on the devices, utensils, containers, and ingredients before her. As the smell of chocolate makes its way through the house, the twins come to investigate. They're confused by what they find, their sister making something without magic.
"Sis, what are you doing"? Edric asks.
"Making something for Luz" Amity answered distractedly, trying to get a cake into a particular shape.
"Mittens is in Love" Emira added in a sing-song voice.
Amity doesn't contradict her.
It's the big V Day, and Amity's almost at the Owl House. Hooty announces her before she even reaches the front door, calling to Luz that her girlfriend is here. Amity's sure she'll never get tired of being called that.
Luz meets her at the doorway, quickly leading her by the hand to the living room sofa. Amity makes sure to greet Eda & King on their way through the kitchen.
"I know you said Valentine's Day wasn't a big deal, but I wanted to get you something. I know humans give each other hearts, chocolate, flowers, so…" Amity's nerves cause her to trail off as they sit down. She carefully removes several wrapped objects from her bag; one cup shaped, one cuboid, the other rectangular.
Luz unwraps the cup shape, revealing a large, reusable coffee cup. Feeling a large amount of liquid inside, she opens it to expose the hot chocolate within. "I made it personally, and the cups' magic means it'll never get cold, and lid has a small opening so you can smell it" Amity explains. Luz smiles at the effort Amity's put in, and it did smell great.
Next the rectangular box, which contained a bunch of roses. The smile on Luzs' face making all Amitys' efforts worthwhile. "I managed to find some flowers from the human world. I took off all the thorns. I hope they taste good" Amity adds nervously.
Luz tries not to look confused, thinking it was a Boiling Isles thing.
Luz unwraps her final present, revealing a cake in the shape of an actual human heart. "I made it myself, no magic, and I got ingredients I know you like" Amity said shyly.
"It looks delicious" Luz smiles. "I got you this" she continues, trying to cover the slight awkwardness. Both Amity's and her own for how much Amity'd gotten her.
She presents a small cloth bag, which opens to reveal a locket in the shape of a heart, stylised this time. Amity opens its clasp, revealing a picture of the two of them, a miniature section of their Prom picture. The other side was engraved, and Amity recognises Luz's handwriting.
For a Queen from her Champion
Amity clutches it to her heart. She smiles, then throws herself into Luz. The pair landing in an embrace on the sofa.
Eda ended their moment by poking her head into the room. She grins at the "lovebirds", then explains that she needed Luz in the kitchen.
"I'll see you tomorrow after school, ok", Luz kissing Amity before showing her out.
"Yeah, can't wait" Amity replies, her face completely red.
As she walks away from the house, she hears…
"Is that dessert" asks a high-pitched voice.
"No, mine!"
Luz meets Amity at her front door the next day with an enormous smile, quickly leading her up to her bedroom. By the time they reach the door, Amity's feeling electric from Luzs' hand being on the small of her back.
Those feelings change when they entered, and Amity tries to prevent the sadness showing on her face. The cup was empty, and the flowers were in a vase by Luz's bed.
"The cake tasted so good, you're an amazing cook. I've never seen one like it either. Back home they're different, but I like yours better though" Luz beamed, making Amity blush.
"And the hot chocolate was delicious" she continued, "I had to drink it all before King stole it. The flowers smell great too, I can't believe you got all the thorns off." Luz takes a deep breath of the roses, leaving Amity confused. Was Luz trying to make her feel better about her screw ups?
Luz embraced her girlfriend with such tenderness that Amity wanted to melt. "No-one's every done something like that for me, thank you" she said softly.
"Well, I wanted to spoil my Champion" Amity smiled, not quite sure what'd happened. But Luz was happy, and that was all that mattered.
She was going to kill Gus though.
