Thunderstorm

A guest asked for a oneshot of a toddler Henry climbing into bed with Emma during a thunderstorm.

Guest: Sorry, but I've already written that kind of story :/

Henry screamed and dived under the covers again as the bright lights flashed outside and the big bangs rattled through the house. His mommy had told him before he'd gone to bed that it was just a thunderstorm and to not be frightened, but he couldn't help it. It was scary. When another light flashed and more scary noises roared, Henry knew he couldn't take it anymore. He quickly jumped out of bed and ran as fast as his little legs could carry him through to his mommy's room. He pulled himself up onto the spare side of the bed and cuddled right up to his mama.

Emma woke with a start from the movement at her side. She opened her eyes, vision still blurry, and looked down to try and make out what was going on. Despite the blurry vision from the rude awakening and trouble seeing through the darkness, Emma quite quickly worked out it was Henry that was her little intruder.

"Henry?" Emma croaked. "Buddy, what's going on? Why are you through here?"

"Scary." He mumbled into her side, clutching onto her top. Emma wondered for a moment what Henry was talking about, but then she remembered. The storm. There was a massive thunderstorm rampaging through the eastern states right from Charleston, West Virginia right through into Canada. It should hopefully pass through Maine overnight, but until then Emma knew her little man was going to struggle.

"Do you want to know a secret?" Emma whispered to Henry. He nodded, intrigued. "Thunderstorms are scary; but they can't get to you if you're under the covers. So if you and I stay under the covers all night, they won't be able to hurt you. How does that sound?" Henry's head peeked out a little from his mom's top.

"Ok." He said with a brave little smile. So Emma used her headboard to prop up her quilt so she and Henry could sleep under there safely. She then snuggled up with Henry underneath. He rested his head against her chest, contented, and not long after fell into an easy sleep. Emma didn't fall asleep so quickly. Yes, she was tired, but right now, she was just happy to watch her baby boy sleep. Just for a little while. The chances to do this were becoming fewer and farther between. So while she had the opportunity, she would use it.
