Morrigan Returns Chapter 1: Enter Ray of Grey

Regina's portkey deposited her at the entrance to Diagon Alley on the morning of August 1st, 1991. Holding her head high, her light incandescent acromantula silk robes fluttering around her, she seemingly glided up to Gringotts. It struck her how much English goblins looked like their distant American cousins, the Pukwudgies.

As she entered the bank and walked up to a teller to go to her vault, she saw a Half-giant with a thick black beard and a young boy with equally messy black hair and green eyes at the teller's stand next to her. Her teller Goblin barked an order to one of the mineshaft goblins to take all three of them to their vaults. On the ride down, they stopped first at her trust vault, number 688, as the Grey family's presence in England was not as old as some of the native families, her trust vault was also not as deep as it could have been. But is was right next to that of the other pre-teen in the cart, one Harry Potter. Regina quickly walked into her vault and scooped all of that year's money into her money bag, charmed anti-theft and extended inside.

Walking back into the cart, the half-giant man asked her, "Why yer usin' all yer money at once? Ain' it 'posed to last yeh?"

She smiled at his concern. "It's only my trust vault. My parents would never let me into the family vault until I inherit. This will get refilled every year as long as my parents are alive. I just don't want to go down here on these carts too often, and the percentages came in yesterday."

She then noticed the other boy standing there in awe of his gold. She addressed him, "you should probably get some money. That has way too much money to be a trust vault, but you should scoop in a few thousand galleons. You definitely have that several dozen times that much, and first year supplies are the most important ones."

He then nodded at her confused. "Thanks. But how much is what?"

She was confused for a second, he was obviously from a pureblood family, yet he didn't know how the money worked. No matter. "The copper ones are knuts. The silver ones are sickles. You don't need either when you have galleons, you'll get change. The gold ones are Galleons, and they're worth about 50 pounds. The exchange rate is 29 knuts in a sickle and 17 sickles in a galleon, but don't bother remembering that. Nobody does. Oh and wizarding currency is the same worldwide, so if you go to another country, there's nothing to exchange, thanks to the ICW." the boy nodded, walked over to one of the piles of gold and started scooping some into his pockets.

Regina sighed. She reached into her extended pocket and brought out a bag. "Here. Charmed Anti-Theft and Expanded. Never, Ever, put your gold in pockets."

The black haired boy mumbled, "Th-thanks."

"No prob."

When the three stumbled out of the vault, Regina walked over to the cart Goblin and handed him a letter. "My father asked me to make sure this passes on to your father."

The goblin was shocked. Not many wizards even realized the amount of Goblins that worked in the bank. And Griphook's father was the current Director of Gringotts Bank, not that many Goblins knew that, much less wizards.

Regina left the bank, and the stunned Goblin behind. That boy seemed nice. She decided to catch up to him, maybe do their shopping together. Up ahead, the half-giant left towards the pub, the Leaky Cauldron, while the boy, money bag in hand, continued to the clothes shop.

She jogged a small distance and then slowed, walking next to that boy. "Hello. I'm Regina, by the way. But my friends call me Ray. What's your name?"

"Harry," he muttered shyly. "I'm Harry," he repeated. "Did you say friends?"

"Yeah, why not. You're going to Hogwarts too, right?" he nodded. "Then I already have a friend in school!" she exclaimed.

They reached Madam Malkin's Robes for all Occasions, and entered together. A few minutes worth of measuring and the both had 5 sets of Hogwarts robes, as well as day robes in dark blue, grey, dark green, dark violet, and Ray got purple, all of acromantula silk instead of the usual wool, as well as a few winter cloaks.

Ray and Harry continued on their way to Ollivander's for Harry's wand, quickly stopping by Slug and Jiggers for a Hogwarts potion set on the way.

When they entered, Ollivander seemingly leapt out of the shadows at them.

"Harry Potter, I thought I would be seeing you here. And that young lady with you is…"

Ray giggled. "I have the great Garrick Ollivander stumped. Probably because you didn't make the wands of either of my parents. I'm Regina Morrigan Grey. Don't bother with wands for me. Family tradition that we find the ingredients for our own wands on our eleventh birthday."

Ollivander was stunned for a second before he asked, "May I see it? I must say I am very curious" She passed it over. "Curious, very curious. What is it made of?"'

"Ilvermorny's Snakewood with a dual core of thunderbird wing feather and Horned Serpent horn both willingly given, and Horned serpent jewel focus gem at the base. That tree's the only one of its kind, on Ilvermorny grounds." Ray then thought for a second and continued. "My Grandmother on my father's side, her mother is from the Trelawney line of seers, she had a vision and told me to make a twin wand to mine and give it to you, sir. These are like those of Chadwick and Webster Boot from when Ilvermorny was first founded. It's like a brother wand, except twin wands can never turn against each other, but together their effects are magnified by a hundred."

She reached into her cloak pocket and pulled out a wand that looked like a symmetric match to her own. Ollivander got out a warded box so the wand wouldn't be broken while others tried wands and put the wand away, moving on towards Harry.

Three dozen unmatched wands later, Olllivander tried to give Harry the Holly and Phoenix feather wand Dumbledore had recommended. The wand did not start to give off a warm glow for Harry. It exploded so violently, the phoenix feather, usually indestructible, was no more. Although Dumbledore would not agree with him, Illlivander gave an internal sigh of thanks. Nobody would have the brother wand to Voldemort anymore.

Then, looking at Regina Grey reassuring her new friend, he had a sudden idea. Carefully looking at both out of the corner of his eye, he looked at their magical cores. They were both blindingly bright. Most cores started out in a light color, showing the caster's predisposition to certain elements of magic, and some got darker with use of powerful magic, most labeled dark by the ministry. They could also get brighter as they grew, and with more magic use. Harry's was a bright golden color, with threads of light green showing an ability for Parseltongue, murky brown thread showing metamorphmagus ability, bright blue for an affinity for hexes and curses, mostly taught in DADA, as well as a blob of red showing he would have an easy time finding his familiar, as well as his animagus transformation. Ray had a blindingly bright silver color, but what surprised Ollivander was the blurry veil spreading from her core to her entire body. She had extremely strong occlumency shields. So strong that even Ollivander couldn't see what other abilities she had. But looking between the two cores, he saw the similarities. Not that anyone, even with the rare gift of magic sight would be able to see it, that was the Ollivander family magic. And right then, he knew what wand would be right for Harry Potter.

"Miss Grey, I feel you brought that wand into this shop at just the right moment. Try it, Mister Potter." Grasping the wand offered, Harry felt a warmth unlike any other spread through his body. It was the most blissful feeling ever, and he was sure that he would treasure that memory of bonding with the wand for the rest of his life. His whole body glowed, and he could even feel his body healing the hidden scars and bruises from whenever his Uncle Vernon got too mad or too drunk.

Ray sighed. "Great."

Harry looked at her, worriedly. "Is something wrong? Do you not want us to have matching wands?"

"No. Nothing of the sort. Just that father bet me that my first British friend would get the twin wand to mine. I swear, if the Trelawney and Lovegood family seer's gifts that my grandmother inherited weren't matrilineal, I would say my father's a seer. I should know by now. Father never loses a bet." Then, to show her wand-brother that she really had no problem with his wand, she hugged him so hard, it felt like she squeezed the life out of him.

After the wand shop, the bookstore was next.

When the two friends got to the section for first year course books, they saw another girl there, frantically grabbing a copy of every book she could find into her cauldron, which already looked too heavy to pick up.

"Need help there?" Harry asked the girl, whose muggle style backpack was slipping off her arm.

Her backpack finally slid off her arm, Harry catching it before her potions ingredients could spill all over the bookshop's floor. He set it down gently before walking over to the coroner and getting her a space extended basket that she didn't notice, instead putting her books in her cauldron. When she noticed Harry helping her, she answered, "Thanks. This is all so new, we only get our letters a month before school starts. Nobody in my family's magic at all, it was such a surprise when i got my letter, but I was ever so pleased, of course, I mean, it's the very best school of witchcraft there is, I've heard - I'm going to learn these books by heart, of course, I just hope it will be enough - I'm Hermione Granger by the way, who are you?"

Ray laughed. "Chillax. The fact about the best school of Magic in Britain is because it's the only one. I was supposed to go to Ilvermorny, it's in Massachusetts, in America where I grew up, but Mother wanted me to go to her old school Hogwarts. And no need to memorize your books. You'll see that muggle logic and wizarding logic is very different. Not that either is wrong, mind you." Hermione's eyes were wide at that intake of information. "And about nobody in your family being magical, that's impossible. You've heard of genetics, right? Muggles study it a lot more than wizards."

"Yeah. But I'm a witch."

"Wizards is a general term, just like muggles. Well, you know how certain traits can only be passed through bloodlines, but sometimes they skip generations, right?"

"Yes, of course. Recessive genes."

"Well, magic is a gene. Unlike muggle genes sometimes it can be dominant and sometimes recessive. That's why magicals prefer to marry other magicals, so magic stays in the family. The blood purity war was way over the top, Voldemort was just a terrorist, but there are very few wizards who marry muggles." Hermione was nodding along, the information making perfect sense to her. "As to muggle-borns, that's not possible. Both your parents probably had the recessive magical gene, and it manifested in you. I gave up a few hairs for a study of magical genetics last year, and so did my parents. But you should be careful who you give those things to. Hair, and especially blood can be used against you, which is why magical medicine is so advanced compared to muggles. Most offensive magic doesn't spill blood for the same reason. You parents are probably muggle-squibs, people with one recessive magic gene. There are also normal squibs, with one dominant magic gene, they often have magical children if they marry a magical. You should do a blood test to see if you are related to a pureblood family."

"What's that?"

"I forgot Britain doesn't usually encourage these things. MACUSA has all children take a blood test at ten years old when the magic calms down, more or less. It's magic that can determine what family you are related to so you can see if you inherit anything or if there is family magic that you could learn. Harry should probably get one too. I'll show you where after we get our books."

And so they did. After convincing Hermione that she only needed a few extra books other than the schoolbooks, the rest being readily available in the Hogwarts library.

After leaving the bookstore, Ray led them towards Knockturn Alley. Hermione protested saying, "Professor McGonagall, she brought me here, said never to go into Knockturn Alley. She said that's the Black Market of the Wizarding World."

Ray scoffed. "That's just stupid. There's no more illegal deals there than in Diagon. It's just where all the cheaper stuff is, or the stuff you have to haggle on. A lot of the things there you have to have permits to buy or sell, but nothing illegal. Aurors, magical police, bust illegal stuff once in a while, but they do so everywhere else with just as much frequency. It's just a bit spooky, but again, it's cheap, so of course there's less space and it's less sparkly and shiny. It's also older." A few building's in, there was a building with a sign that just said Blood tests.

They entered, and a shopkeeper walked in. He had dirty blond hair, and wore patched robes that didn't look very new. "You know you need your parents, kids?"

Ray sighed. "Mister, you should read the Ministry's laws more carefully. She's supposedly muggle-born" Ray pointed at Hermione, "though I'm about to prove otherwise, but that makes her automatically emancipated in the Magical world unless she has Magical relatives. He' an Orphan and Heir of an Ancient and Noble house," she pointed at Harry, "therefore also emancipated unless he adopts an adult into his family or has an adult magical second cousin once removed or closer, which we are going to see. And I am legally emancipated as neither of my parents are in the country, and I'm a head of house as well. So no parental permission is required for any of us." The shopkeeper sighed. He really did need to read up on those laws.

"Alright." He took out three pieces of parchment, and motioned for them to drop seven drops of blood onto their parchment. He then dropped a potion onto each sheet, and mumbled a bluish spell. When words started to spread across each parchment, Ray snatched up hers, looked it over briefly, and put it into her shoulder bag.

Harry gazed at his.

Hadrian James Potter

Heir of House Potter

Heir of House Black

Son of House Bones

Lord of House Peverell

Father James Charlus Potter (deceased)

Mother Lily Rose Evans Potter (deceased) born Lily Anne Bones

Head of House Potter Theodore Edward Tonks (Grandson of Fleamont Potter, squib, uncle to Charlus Potter), Legal Guardian

Head of House Black Arcturus Polaris Black

Head of House Bones Amelia Susan Bones

Hermione stared at hers.

Hermione Jean Granger

Lady of House Fawley

Daughter of House Rosier

Father George Granger (squib, Grandson of Evan Rosier I)

Mother Jean Granger (squib, Granddaughter of Fredrick Fawley Jr.)

Head of House Rosier Evan Rosier III

"Brilliant" exclaimed Harry, after he got over his moment of shock.

Hermoine had yet to utter words. Ray did though. "Now I know how closely related I am to both of you. Hermione you're my 5th cousin through the Fawley line, Harry, you're my 4th cousin again through the Fawley line, and Hermione, you and Harry are second cousins."

Then Harry and Hermione simultaneously exclaimed, "I have a wizard uncle!" and Harry continued, "Now I don't need to live with Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon!"

The shop worker gulped audibly. "You-you're Harry Potter."

Ray glared at him. "And why do you care? Another fan who wants his autograph because he didn't get killed when his parents did?"

The blond man took a step back "N-no. My name's Remus Lupin. I was best friends with your father, Harry."

Harry stilled. He then spoke in a cold angry voice nobody had ever heard him use before. "And Mister best friend to my father, where exactly have you been for ten years? I've never met you, never even heard of you. Where was the person who could have told me my parents weren't drunks who died in a car crash ten years earlier? Where was the person who could have rescued me from Aunt Petunia's frying pan and sharp tongue, Uncle Vernon's belt and temper, and their son Dudley's hobby of Harry hunting with his gang? Where was the person who could have told me my parent's names, or the fact that I wasn't a freak who needed the freakishness beat and starved out of him? That I was a wizard? Where?" Harry finished with a yell, silent tears streaming down his cheeks. Both girls had pale faces and wrapped Harry in a hug. All color had left Remus Lupin and he was shaking in anger.

"Dumbledore promised," he growled.

Ray snorted in a very unladylike manner. "Dumbledore does a lot of that. Guess how many he keeps? I'm guessing he promised you Harry would be safe and loved? My mother was two years older than yours, Harry, a Ravenclaw, I remember her briefly mentioning listening to Lily Evans and James Potter's infamous fights for four years. Got asked out by both your father and Sirius Black if I remember correctly. Well, after exams her sixth year, Severus Snape, Rabastan Lestrange and Antonin Dolohov tried to rape her. She was barely saved by Lily Evans and Marlene McKinnon, Gryffindor. Albus Dumbledore banned anyone from giving the three from getting as much as a detention. Gryffindor lost thirty points, and my mother, Evans, and McKinnon got a month of detentions each by Lestrange, for violence against fellow students, who was a seventh year prefect. Dumbledore did nothing. My mother transferred to Ilvermorny for her seventh year. One second" She took a mirror out of her pocket, and said, "Amara Grey". A face appeared in the mirror.

"Sweetheart?" Amara asked.

"Mother. Who was that British Law Wizard you told me about who was unafraid of going against saint Dumbledore? My friend, Harry Potter, Dumbledore kidnapped him from his rightful Head of House and placed him with some abusive muggles not even related to him, and banned a friend of his parents from visiting him."

"Oh my."

"Oh, and I tried to find those trial records for that black dog of an ex-boyfriend of yours, Crouch and Dumbledore just chucked him in there, coincidentally forgetting the trial of the godfather of that same Harry Potter. I don't know how nobody noticed this yet, it's publicly accessible information."

"Gina, I am going to call Amelia Bones, she's the British head of Law Enforcement, your father worked with her a few years back, she owes me a favor or two. Help Harry, I owe his mother a small life debt from the end of sixth year. He might not have inherited it , but I'll be damned if I let another person suffer because of Albus bloody Dumbledore, be it a child or that mangy dog I made the mistake of dating early in my sixth year. Make sure to send a letter to Harry's Head of House."

"Disconnect" Ray told her mirror and her mother's image faded out.

All the while, Remus Lupin was cursing up a storm, thankfully for Hermione's innocent ears, he was doing it while under a silencing charm. Ray sent a finite incantatem at the man.

As the trio was exiting the shop, Remus Lupin murmured, "I'm sorry cub", and he would swear his enhanced lycan hearing heard Harry mutter, "I found uncle moony"

The trio then went to the trunk shop, and got space extended and featherlight backpacks for their books, and Hermione got a blood-locked multi-compartment, space expanded, and featherlight trunk, Ray and Harry already having them from their vaults. They then split up, agreeing to meet on the Hogwarts Express.

A/N First chapter. Word count 3432. I will update once in a weeks, maybe if I have enough written ahead of time I will update more. Reviews and Comments, please. All family trees mentioned will be Canon except Ray's as she isn't a Canon character. Romance will start 3rd or 4th year. It will deviate more and more from Canon regularly. None of the characters will be superpowered, but look at Canon Harry. How exactly was a 16 year old supposed to have defeated the scariest dark lord in like ever with a single expelliarmus. Also, for all those Romione shippers, sorry but no. Ron just needs to grow up. Also, yes, I'm American so you will se a lot of American language and mannerisms in Regina. Ilvermorny and Magical America Canon, is what Rowling writes on Wizarding World.

Also, I am trying to keep the family trees as canon as possible, except of course the stuff not mentioned in canon. Harry's grandparents by the way, the cause of many fanfic debates are Charles Potter and Dorea Potter nee Black, Arcturus Black's sister and Orion Black's first cousin, as well as a Slytherin. Charlus was a Ravenclaw, rich, and pureblooded which is why she didn't get disowned. Now think of all the British pureblood families that could have had ancestry from at least one of the Hogwarts founders, the Peverell's, as well as another influential family such as Ollivander, Emrys, Le Fay, or Pendragon, etc, but also private so not many know of those roots. Yes, Ray will have very important ancestry, but not for the bragging rights, but for the family magic, which I will touch upon later. Whoever can give me that family (Ray's mother's maiden name) will get a big scene from the future I already have written out by pm, so don't make it anonymous. Any other ideas are appreciated and the valuable gems will get the same scene.

Thanks for reading, and I'm out.
