A letter to mama
I'mAQueenAndBitMoreRefined asked for a oneshot of Emma finding a letter she wrote to Snow when she was younger. Emma shares it with her and they start crying. Emma says "I love you mama."
Guest and Purple eyes: All chapters must contain some form of interaction or connection between at least 2 members of the Charming family.
Robyn: Sorry, but I've said previously I won't do any more stories where someone has a twin/triplets etc. :/
Petunia: That seems more like a multi chapter story.
It was hard for everyone when Emma started moving all her stuff from Snow and Charming's loft apartment. It was cementing the fact that Emma was no longer living under the same roof as them. She had flown the nest, in her own unique way. Now there were just a couple of dusty boxes remaining. Emma had to open them first to check they were actually her things, thus showing how little she had used whatever the contents was. Her mom was with her as she opened the smallest of the boxes. Emma rummaged around inside it. Yeah, these were definitely her things. Although most of them could probably go in the trash now. Emma pulled out an envelope, yellowed with age. For a moment, she didn't recognise it at all. It was covered in glitter and little scribbles that Emma supposed were meant to be drawings. She vaguely recognised her own childish handwriting in the middle of the envelope: Mama. Now Emma remembered what this was.
"What's that you've got there, Emma?" Snow asked, curious as to what was attracting so much of Emma's attention.
"Nothing." Emma said quickly. "Just junk. I'll fling it out…"
"Hold your horses." Snow said. She knew anything Emma was this cagey over was certainly not junk. "Tell me the truth. What is it?" Emma sighed and mumbled something under her breath. This was just too awkward for her. "What was that? I couldn't make that out." Emma sighed.
"It's a letter I wrote to you as a kid, ok?" Emma admitted. Snow was taken aback. She hadn't expected that to be her response.
"Emma, why would you want to hide that from me?" Snow asked her. Emma shrugged.
"I don't know. It's just a little cringey, isn't it? I wrote it when I was about seven when all the other kids were making Mother's Day cards or something. I mean, here, listen." Emma pulled out an equally sparkly bit of paper and began to read aloud.
"To my mama,
My real mama, I mean. It would be nice to know who you are. Maybe you're famous. But I don't care if you're poor because I'm poor now. I just want to know you. I'm not mad that you gave me away. Maybe you were scared. It's ok. Just, come back, ok? I'll keep waiting.
I love you mama,
Emma xxx"
Snow had tears in her eyes by the end, as did Emma. She had forgotten the emotion her little self had put into this letter.
"Well, not famous, not exactly, but does a fairytale character count?" Snow joked. Emma laughed, hastily wiping away a stray tear.
"I'll take it. I would have taken you whoever you were. Especially back then. San Diego was where I was at the time. It's a big city, and it was easy for a little kid like me to get lost in the crowd. I saw so many kids with their moms and dads. It was hard thinking I might never find mine. Back then, I still had a little hope that I would. That's why I wrote this letter. I kept it for if I ever found you…so I guess this really belongs to you." Emma pointed out, offering out the letter to Snow who accepted it gratefully. "I'm really glad I found you, you know." Emma added quietly. "Even if it took a little longer than I thought it might when I was seven. Snow could see the tears building up in Emma's eyes. She placed the letter down on Emma's bedside table and wrapped her arms around her daughter.
"I'm sorry it took so long too." Snow replied. "I wanted to be there Emma, we both did."
"I know." Emma sniffed. She didn't hold it against her parents that they hadn't been there. She knew it wasn't their fault. Emma decided to take back a moment she knew her seven year old self would have wanted. "I love you mama." She whispered. Snow tensed for a moment. Emma had never called her that before.
"I love you too." She responded. "More than you will ever know."
