Emma tried to maintain her cool as she stood outside her parents' home, waiting for them to answer. She could feel the potion vial in her back pocket like it was scalding her skin, even though it was at room temperature. This was the only way. Emma had to keep reminding herself of that. Her parents couldn't come to the Underworld with her, it was far too dangerous. Emma wouldn't risk their lives or risk Neal being raised as an orphan like her. If they were too stubborn to think of themselves and stay behind, then Emma's hand was forced.
Regina had promised her this would only last for a few hours, tops. It wasn't like a sleeping curse. Emma had made sure to clarify that. Just a few drops mixed into any other drink each and they would be out for the count within a minute and there would be no way they could follow the others. Emma knew they wouldn't be happy with her, but she was prepared to risk that in order to ensure their safety. So when her dad opened the door to allow her in, Emma forced a smile onto her face. She had to act normal or they would suspect that she was up to something.
"We're nearly done packing." Charming explained. They were due to leave for the Underworld in just under two hours. "We've already taken Neal to the nunnery so he has a chance to settle before we leave. Just in case they have an emergency question." Emma could already see the pain leaving Neal behind was causing both of her parents. This was exactly why this had to be done.
"Why don't you go get him back?" Emma tried once more.
"We can't bring your brother to the Underworld, Emma. It wouldn't be safe for him." Snow told her. She, of course, knew what Emma was trying to say, but was choosing to ignore her. They had already been through this.
"It's not safe for either of you, either. Go get Neal and stay here until we're all back. Someone needs to keep Storybrooke safe anyway…"
"Emma." Charming said firmly. "Enough. We're not changing our minds. Yes, we know the Underworld is filled with danger, but that's exactly why we're going with you. Nobody knows how long it will take before we find Hook. We're not leaving you down there for a single second without someone permanently watching your back. You're not going down there alone. End of. Neal will be just fine with Blue and the others until we get back." Charming and Snow then went back to packing. Emma sighed. It was going to be the hard way then.
"Well fine. If you're both so dead set on coming with me then we all need to be in peak conditions. Starting with the basics, such as hydration. It's probably going to be hot down there. I'll get you both some water." Snow and Charming couldn't help but think this was an odd way for Emma to respond to them insisting that they come, but they weren't going to fight it. Not if she was finally giving up and accepting they were tagging along.
Emma went into the kitchen and poured each of her parents a glass of water. Making sure neither was looking, Emma slipped out the vial and dropped a few droplets of the potion into both of their glasses. Emma took a few steadying breaths before carrying them back through and handing them to her parents.
"Thanks Emma." Snow said before each of them took a small sip. Emma held her breath. Was this going to work?
It didn't take long for Emma to get her answer. After only a few seconds, it became clear to Emma that her parents were feeling very light headed. They started swaying on the spot before they each sat on the couch, unable to stand any longer.
"What's…happen…." But before Snow could finish her sentence, her head fell back against the back of the couch. She was out cold. Charming looked at his wife sluggishly before looking back at Emma. She seemed awfully calm. Even with his hazy head, he could tell she had something to do with this.
"What did…you do?" He asked, fighting to stay awake. Emma moved forward and crouched beside them, her guilt clear on her face.
"What I had to." Emma answered. "You weren't taking no for an answer, and I had to keep you both safe. I had to make sure Neal always had you both, like I never did. It's not a curse, don't worry. It'll ware off in a few hours. Just long enough for the rest of us to get to the Underworld without you. I had to do this dad." Charming tried to respond. Tried to convince Emma not to leave without them, but before he could so much as get one word out, he was out cold too. Emma stood up. It was done. With a small wave of her wrist, both of her parents were safely tucked up together in their bed in their pyjamas. She walked over to them and planted a gentle kiss on their forehead each.
"I'm sorry." She whispered before she left the apartment, readying herself for the battle ahead.
