"Is Martha up yet?" Elisabeth asked as she brushed her hair in the mirror.
"I don't think so.." Frederick groaned as he dried his hair, "Why did you wake me up so early? I mean… Lis, it's 5:50 am and the sun's not even up yet."
"Don't be ridiculous, Fred. I told you to wake up.. not to dress up." Elisabeth shrugged as she sat on the other corner of his bed, "Anyways, here's the new plan-."
"Destiny, if it ever exists, goes different on our plans so-"
"-so we have to just let destiny do whatever it wants to…" Elisabeth interrupted him as she sighed, "That's the plan."
Frederick looked to his sister and felt confused, "That's it? That's the plan?"
He knows he can be a little hypocrite at some time but he also knows that his twin is the most competitive person in the world and not even destiny can stop her…. or can it?
"For this day… yes." Elisabeth shrugged as she brushed her hair again, "Destiny has its reasons yesterday and I'm sure it'll be the reason someday."
"You are not making any sense…" Frederick mumbled, his face etched in confusion as he shook his head, "Who said that?"
"Romance novels and me." Elisabeth sighed, "So no more funny business… let's just enjoy the opportunity of having mom around. Who knows... maybe tons of business trips awaits her next year… at least she's back with us and we don't have to do unnecessary pranks to get her attention anymore."
"But what about Professor Georg? Wasn't this plan to get them together was to make him permanent in our lives? What if mom met a guy in one of these business trips and he managed to romance her? I can't think of any other bloke who is suitable to replace father other than Professor-"
"No one is going to replace father!" Elisabeth hissed, "And no one can romance mom that easily and if one managed to…. I'm sure we're good enough to scare it away."
Frederick looked at his sister as he saw now her resemblance to her mother. The way she perfected the look and the tone that can make someone pee on their pants. Somehow, he found it scary and impressive.
For once I'm scared of her… he thought and realized something, She immediately gave me that hell on my first argument and we both know no one can stop her planning on things unless….
"You know something.." Frederick mumbled, watching her expression quickly turn from something that says 'how do you know?' to something that says 'how dare you suggest such a thing?'
Smiling as for once he read her, Frederick repeated, "You know something!"
"What the heck are you talking about?" Elisabeth breathed as she shook her head, brushing her hair as she looked at herself in the mirror, "Bloody hell…"
"Yes of course bloody hell! You never use those words unless I'm right… Elisabeth, you know something… What is it you heard? Or seen? Bloody heck! I can't believe I outsmarted you!"
"You didn't…. outsmarted me. You caught me off guard. And stop acting like that, you sounded like those…. annoying girls gossiping in movies." Elisabeth scoffed as she made her exit, "Don't worry with Martha.. I'll handle her."
Frederick smirked as he watched his sister leave, at least now he knows that he'll never get bored. He just has to know what's stopping their plans and he'll take the matters in his hands.
"But why?" Martha asked as her sister helped her get dressed, "Don't you like mommy getting married to Professor Georg?"
Elisabeth smiled as she brushed Martha's hair, "Of course I do. But do you see the seven children force their father to marry their governess?"
Martha shook her head as she smiled, "So you really think mommy will marry Professor Georg someday?"
"Oh I hope so… But in the meantime, we should stop doing plans and just enjoy our time with mom." Elisabeth smiled, "And we'll hope that she and Professor Georg will someday end up together."
"Do you think Professor Georg will ask mommy to marry her if I ask him?" Martha asked.
Elisabeth refrained herself from chuckling as she said, "I doubt he will if that's because you asked him. Marriage is something to be planned, Martha… just like Professor Georg's schedule today. And its also should not be forced."
"So we have to wait? But I hate waiting… it makes me bored." Martha pouted.
This time, Elisabeth can't help but let out a small laugh as she braided her sister's hair, "I'm sure we can find something to occupy ourselves.. Now let's see if we can do something fun this morning while waiting for the adults to get up."
"Can we play minecraft while singing something? Frederick taught me how to play days ago and I'm trying to make a city!" Martha smiled.
"We can call Frederick to play with us if you want…" Elisabeth said.
Martha shook her head, "Freddy keeps on killing my chicken and he's scaring me with zombies."
Elisabeth chuckled as she stood, "Well… Let me get my phone first. And don't forget to fix your bed.."
Martha nodded and she began fixing the pillows and everything while Elisabeth left the room with a satisfied look on her face.
After what happened last night and what she heard hours ago, she knew this is the best way to do.
.
"Oh Maria… now spill it." Aunt Margaretta smirked as her mother sat beside her on the kitchen counter, her normal cup of tea in her hands.
"Don't tell me that you're going to nag me at twelve am? Don't I deserve a goodnight sleep?" she heard her mother say, followed by her aunt's laugh that sends shivers down Elisabeth's spine.
Hearing her mother sigh, Elisabeth leaned in closer to the door, curious to what her mother will say, "That laugh makes me feel no better… why are you up at this time anyway?"
"I can't sleep with the knowledge of a troubled soul three hallways away.. now enough about me. Something happened that-"
"I have feelings for Georg and I have no idea why I named it love on Elisabeth's questions…" her mother blurted out and sighed, "I guess because I really do… I can't imagine that I just spent five hours at the mall without him. But at the same time, I… I know I should deny it."
"Why on earth would you deny it?" Aunt Margaretta asked.
"For starters, he's my employee… my children's educator and someone who woke me up on my stupidity and blindness."
Elisabeth can feel her Aunt Margaretta's scandalized look as she heard, "So?"
Her mother must be about to drink the tea as she heard the cup met the platter on a loud 'tink' and her mother said, "So?... Margaretta, he's too good for me. I don't deserve a man like him."
"You told me that you can't imagine that you just spent five hours at the mall without him.. you love him, Maria… why else would you say that? One of the subtle signs of the 'Falling For You Mentality' is longing for the presence of the other and you're also checked on the other signs."
"What signs? Margaretta… I swear this 'Falling For You Mentality' is one of those made-up things-"
"-a person would never made up such a thing. And the signs? Well if I have to enumerate.. we will start with the staring, you two share a lot of time eating each other's eyeballs with your own and don't you dare deny it! Then after you visit the children, the first things that comes to your mouth is 'Mr. Von Trapp is excellent today..' and before we know it, you're already admiring his awkward facial expressions and once called him cute for it."
"In my defense, I called him cute because…. because it does look cute." her mother said.
"And I haven't asked for your defense… now next, you're defending yourself when you're accused. I know it's a bit lame sign but believe me, as someone that have been there… defending yourself when accused of that thing is a sign." Aunt Margaretta smiled, chuckling.
'Perhaps mom is glaring at her or… blushing red.' Elisabeth thought.
"Another sign is your songs." Aunt Margaretta mumbled.
"Now that's something ridiculous-"
"Maria… who on earth would sing Beyoncé's 'Halo' while decorating the tree?"
Elisabeth can hear her mother sigh, "It feels refreshing singing Beyoncé for once in a while.."
"Are you… defending yourself? 'Cause if you are then I didn't asked.." Aunt Margaretta laughed as Elisabeth tried to stifle her own.
Somehow she found the situation very amusing despite her awkward position on the door. Elisabeth can imagine her aunt is brushing tears away as she spoke, "You know Maria… it'll be easier if I do a simple test with you. First, why do you stare at him?"
"His eyes are so pretty.." her mother said without missing a beat, "I can't stop okay? I… I just enjoy looking at him. He looked so damn attractive unlike those other men I've met."
"Much more attractive then Dominik?"
Elisabeth waits for her mother's answer. More curious than ever, "It'll be unfair to compare him over Dom. Dominik was baby faced with round glasses while Georg is… like- I don't know.. like those bastards who shaved to show their chiseled faces.."
"Are you calling him a bastard because he attracts you or because he's a despicable person?" Aunt Margaretta asked.
Another silence came around for seconds before her mother asked, "Can I say both?"
"I'll never call Georg despicable."
"I first thought he is." her mother blurted out, "He does attracts me. And I guess it's his traits first. I mean- he's so great with my children. I've never seen the twins obey another man unless I said so. And Martha's not so clingy to me anymore.. she's starting to be independent and out of her box."
"Next question… why did you tell Elisabeth that you love him?"
"Because I….. I don't bloody know." her mother said, "Maybe because… I also want to know what she thought about it. She's the one who initiates the topic and.. well she's close into telling me to tell him but I gave her tons of no-nos… I hope she didn't told anyone about it."
"Okay… completely understandable. Now… why don't you want to give it a go?" Aunt Margaretta asked.
There's a pregnant silence between the two as Elisabeth didn't dare to move a muscle, for fear of being busted if she do so.
"He deserves so much better.." her mother mumbled, "He deserves someone who can give him time and everything. Someone who can pin a promise… someone who can be his wife. I can't be that someone, Margaretta… I'm a busy woman, I'm a widow and a 'flibbertijibbet' as how some nuns said years ago… I- I don't deserve him. We won't work out!"
"Tell me why?" Aunt Margaretta asked, "Why it won't? You haven't even been there yet and you're already making assumptions."
"It's better that way…" her mother blurted, "We don't know how he feels about me and I value whatever we have. I can't… I can't be the 'cause of our misery. Whatever relationship we have will affect the children's lives and… if it doesn't work out? It'll be a big scoop of bullshit that I don't want any of us to go through."
"But what if he tried to make a move? What if he hinted his feelings for you?"
Elisabeth can sense her mother's face go crumpled as she heard, "Impossible."
"But everything is possible in the 21st century, Maria! Who knows what will happen… Life is not life without unexpected turns." Aunt Margaretta said, "Just look at it this way. Fate brings you two to each other's lives, if he asked to stay… will you let him?"
"He doesn't need to ask.. I already asked him. But we remain whatever we are." her mom replied.
"Then that'll kill the vibe, Maria. It's like leaving the poor guy hanging. If he stayed, what would that mean?"
"That he cares for the children since he's here for them…"
Elisabeth held her breath as she could feel the tension getting higher behind the door. She know she should take her leave but her curious mind won over her feelings as she remained stoic against the door.
"But what if there's no other reason for him to stay?", Aunt Margaretta asked, "We both know that you…. asking him to stay is not only for the children's sake."
"I don't deny it but I think I should. I'm telling you, Margaretta.." her mother insisted, "... it's better this way."
There's an odd silence inside that makes Elisabeth feel shivers creeping on her spine, what if they found her eavesdropping?
Luckily, her aunt made a comical sound and let out a loud 'ha', "Well then good luck with your plan."
Elisabeth felt confused but she sensed someone approaching the door, so she carried her shoes and successfully ran away without making a sound.
For once she felt so grateful that they have stone flooring.
.
"So, while the titter-tatter is away. Tell me something about this Ms. Rainier of yours.." Max smirked as he gave Georg a knowing look.
Looking at his friend, Georg made a face as he shook his head, "There's nothing much to say about Maria."
Realizing his mistake, Georg suddenly longed to bang his head on the table as Max started to taunt him, "Oooohh Maria… since when have you been first name basis with your employers, Georgie.."
"Since it's the 21st century. Now Max, I didn't drive for two hours to get teased so cut the crap." Georg warned as Max gave him a laugh.
"Well, Georgie… I also didn't happen to drive for an hour to hear nothing. You seemed to be better. How's Christmas?"
"I visited a church and took care of a blasted van that got caught on a bloody snow." Georg sniffed.
"It doesn't sound as spiteful as you intended it to be… is it because you didn't spend it with your darling Ms. Rainier." Max chuckled, smirking as he saw Georg's face throw glares at him.
If looks could kill… he thought, I'll be meeting Satan by now.
"She's not my darling, Max. And may I have to inform you that she's the mother of my students…" Georg stated.
"So?" Max asked.
Georg blinked and let out a growl, "So? Max are you mad? I- what on earth are you suggesting?"
Max threw his head back laughing, his hands trying to cover his volume as he remembered where they are. Georg rolled his eyes, shaking his head as he took a sip on his coffee.
"I'm very…. amused Georg. You-" not being able to continue his laughter, Max wheezed as he brushed tears that are starting to form, "You're the one who suggested that it's the 21st century and yet you…. still go with the propriety thing of not dating single parents."
"Max this is entirely different.. it can affect the children's school impression once people discovered that their mother pursued into… that…. with their teacher." Georg groaned.
"Well it won't if you only taught those kids for a month." Elsa said as she sat back between the two, "Now, be honest to me, Georg. Have you romanced the Dragon Lady?"
Georg looked at Elsa with a shocked expression and can't help but remember his conversation with Maria last night.
Hardly a dragon lady if you ask me… he thought.
Shaking his head, Georg raised his eyebrows, "Why on earth will you two think of me that way?"
"Well… you used to be a rake." Max mumbled, earning him a glare from Georg and a smack from Elsa.
"Speak for yourself, Max.." Elsa sneered and gave her most genuine smile to Georg, "Now tell me… How is it to live with her? Is she really that flawless? I heard she rock high heels… how long are her heels? What scent does she use? Does she really have a closet full of scarfs?"
Max chuckled as he patted Elsa's shoulders, causing him to get smacked again, and said, "You sounded like a creepy admirer, Elsa."
"Shut up, Max. I need to know facts because I'm planning to date Eric. I'm gonna make him fall for me with those facts." Elsa smirked as she turned her attention back to Georg, "So?"
Georg rolled his eyes and shook his head as he mumbled, "Lady Johanson is the most caring, loving, smart, sensible, respectful, beautiful, sweet, thoughtful, kind and charming woman someone could ever met. She can be enigmatic and serious but of course that's her business ego. She's attractive in any palette but she prefers the cooler ones, or maybe that's because of the season. She loves her children more than anything in the world and she's just so… wow. Yes she's flawless… very flawless. And I've only seen her in heels twice when we shop at the mall and when they went to the mall. She wore boots when we went to the meadows and pumps at the park or just around the house, or she's sometimes barefoot when playing hide and seek or tag with the children. Her heels are… well high enough to make us the same height. Her scent is a mixture of a library and roses or sometimes homey and woodsy, it depends if she stayed inside the house or played with the children actually.. She's… just amazing and genuine.. and-" looking at the two, Georg registered to their funny looks, "What?"
Exchanging looks, Elsa and Max gave Georg knowing looks as Elsa sung, "Georg Von Trapp is in love."
She and Max giggled as Elsa looked at Georg's expression, "I can't believe it! You are in love! Oh God! I can't believe it! Oh wait- I'm kidding… of course I do! A woman like Lady Johanson can make the gay to straight and to straight go gay… she can surely capture someone's heart such as Georg's effortlessly. Tell me, what's your first impression on her?"
Georg let out a sigh as he shook his head, I can't believe that this will turn into an interview session.
"Surely you're interested with this Eric huh. Who is that bloke anyway?" he asked.
"The new computer teacher. Mrs. 'Pregnant Karen' was on due and I hope her baby would make her think of resigning. Her husband's a bank owner for heaven's sake! The funds, that we don't know where have gone, are supposed to be on the choirs. If I could just find evidence." Max grumbled as he took a bite on his cupcake, "Do these students of yours sing?"
"Not a chance on recruiting them, Max. Elisabeth, the eldest, is off to college next year and Frederick is between joining the army or doing business, it seems that he wants to do both but Maria doesn't-"
"You're in first name basis!" Elsa exclaimed then cover her mouth as she giggled, "Dear… you two grew closer to each other, aren't you?"
"No need to ask that Elsa. If memory serves me, Georg had already tasted…. Ms. Rainier's wrath." Max teased.
"Ms. Rainier?" Elsa asked.
Georg pinched the bridge of his nose and gently bang his head to his palm as he groaned inwardly to himself, Damn.. Damn.. Damn.. and Damn….
"She prefers Mrs. but we all know that Georg's a very stubborn man." Max whispered as he looked at Georg, "Have you done a move yet?"
"Max, she's a widow." Georg groaned.
"A widow is not a nun…" Max smirked, "Isn't it wonderful? At least you didn't fell in love with someone who has a living spouse."
"Max…" Georg warned as he shook his head, "I have no intentions on doing anything with Ms. Rainier because one, she's the mother of my students, two, she's a widow and I respect her, and three… if she's to find love with someone, she will never pick a coward rake."
Elsa playfully smacked his arm and said, "First, so what if she's a mother of the kids?. Second, at least she's a widow and loving someone doesn't make you lose respect. And Third, you're not a coward…. and you're an ex-rake. If she's finding love, I'm sure love will find her first if you make a move."
"And she's not so I'm not making one." Georg blurted out.
"So you admit it… you're in love?" Elsa smirked, "How wonderful… Invite me at the wedding."
"Same goes here.." Max smirked, "And if you need privacy, I'll nominate Elsa to be the babysitter."
"Why me?" Elsa asked.
Georg rolled his eyes as he finished his coffee, I indirectly said yes and now they're talking about a wedding. How damn, Georg… How bloody damn.
"You two.." he started, stopping the two as he let out a slight satisfied sigh, "I am not making a move. I doubt Ms. Rainier mirrors my… impression to her… and I don't want to ruin what we bloody have."
"Well… what do you have with her, Georg?" Elsa asked.
Georg thought for a moment before he said, "Friendship…"
Max and Elsa exchanged looks and looked back to Georg, "Friendship?" Max asked,
Georg slowly nodded as he took a bite on his cookie, "We're being friendly. I teach her twins after all."
"So.. You're not really… planning anything?" Max asked,
Georg nodded as he lifted his eyebrows, "My lesson plans?"
Max groaned and rolled his eyes as he asked, "Who the bloody hell are you and what have you done with Georgie?"
"Pennywise… I ate the damn kid." Georg murmured and rolled his eyes.
Ordering for another cup of coffee, Georg sighed, "Now can we stop talking about my life? It's my life, there's no wedding. Once I finished the one month, I'll get paid and I can be free from the debts. Maybe I'll go back to Austria and work on a Naval Academy so my oath is still fulfilled. While everything goes back to how it is when I'm not here."
"What about the kids? Don't you grew fond of them? And what about your Maria?" Max asked.
Georg sighed, completely ignoring the Maria question, "And what would happen to me, may I ask, if I grew fond to all the children I will soon say goodbye to? Enough about my life, what happened to Grand Mountain since I was sent away?"
"Helena's still the same old chum. Too bad she can't join us. She went to Scotland to visit someone and told me to give you a nice punch when I saw you. Too bad I can't do that either." Max chipped the corners of the cupcake as he added, "Most staff missed you, especially the female ones. Polly Hanks took over your classes, he broke a school specimen and Elsa took the liberty to kick his balls for you."
"I did that because he broke it in my office. Damn him... now I know why I'm grateful that Georg's the Biology teacher. I have to change the flooring cuz the stains of a dead frog sticks in it." Elsa gushed, taking a sip on her tea, "Max.. stop eating like that. You looked like a rat."
"Don't kill my piggy, Fred!" Martha exclaimed.
"I need food!" Frederick mimicked Martha's exclaimed as they played on their phones.
"What are they playing?" Maria asked Elisabeth as she looked at the two on the mirror.
"Minecraft," Elisabeth mumbled as she read her book, trying to stifle her yawn.
"Do you want to sleep, Elisabeth? You can surely have this whole row if you want, I'll sit on the front seat." Maria asked as she looked at her daughter, "You haven't slept well haven't you?"
"I woke up earlier than usual.." Elisabeth yawned as she watched her mother duck and crawl to the front seat beside Aunt Margaretta.
"Have some sleep, dearest. It'll be a long two hour drive from here to London." Maria said.
Elisabeth smiled as she lay on the seats, her phone still on her hands.
"Martha, Frederick... my darlings could you please lower your volume? Elisabeth's gonna try to sleep." Maria said, satisfied that the two nodded and continued arguing about animal killings.
Maria looked at Margaretta and smirked, "Regret having the wheel?"
"Nonsense! Go have sleep too… I bet you'll need it." Margaretta smirked.
Maria raised her eyebrows and sighed as she leaned back, comfortable to her seat. She closed her eyes and have one person in mind.
Georg.
What if he refused her proposition? What if he just intended to stay for a month?
Will you force him to stay? she thought, He's done a nice job to the twins and in fact… he's already done for the month..
Letting out a sigh, Maria opened her eyes again. Finding them sore and a bit… watery.
Am I crying because I don't want him to leave? she asked herself.
Margaretta looked at Maria and looked at her again, "Awe… have you got yourself some allergy?"
Nodding, Maria took some tissues out of the sides and dabbed it to her tears, "The aircon tickled my nose…"
Lowering the grill, Maria smiled a thanks to Margaretta as she looked at herself in the mirror, "If the model doesn't stay, what would I do?"
"Replace her… or him." Margaretta mumbled, "Have fate Maria… if you really need the model, fate won't let you lose him. Fate, someday, will bring you two together."
"I also have to remind you that fate doesn't have the most impeccable time." Maria sighed.
"That's why I told you to have fate… The best way to appreciate something is when you lost it. If it's better that way, then that way shall we do it."
Maria looked at her friend, almost mother and almost sister. Nodding at herself, she went comfortable on the seat again as she thought of a quote she found somewhere.
"Your greatest love may end, but that's because you're about to head to your destiny."
Georg smiled at Hannah Hollidee as he gave her the gifts.
"Oh! Monsieur! You shouldn't have but anyways- thank you!" Hannah smiled as she went to place the gift somewhere on the tree.
"Hey! Mr. Von Trapp!" one of Georg's senior students greeted as Georg gave him a "Hello!"
"Where have you been sir?"
"Norwich, teaching home-schooled children." Georg said as he looked at his student, "How's the substitute?"
"He's creepy and very boring. Does it have difference if you teach home-schooled kids? I have a friend who's being home-schooled in Norwich, I used to live there with my uncle. She said it depends on the Professor." the boy shrugged, "Do they call you Professor?"
Georg nodded as he looked at the door, blinking again as he saw the five people enter.
It can't be… he thought
He looked back to his student but he's no longer there, he's on an embrace with Georg's also student.
"FREDDY!"
"MARKY!"
"Hey!" Elsa's voice woke Georg up as he looked at her, "Is that her?"
Georg looked to the woman she's pointing her found that her blue orbs are also looking at him.
Maria…
"Oh! Freddy, come here with me. Let me introduce Mr. Georg Von Trapp. He's my biology teacher, the best one if you ask me. He's currently teaching home-schooled kids in Norwich.. do you know someone who's home-schooled there too?" Markian asked.
Frederick looked at Georg and smirked, "I agree… he's best isn't he?"
Markian looked at Georg then back to Frederick and said, "You're kidding."
Before Georg nor Frederick could speak, Martha raced to Georg gave him a hug, "Professor Georg! I thought you're going to a party?"
She was followed by Maria who gave Georg a smile and said, "Now Martha, let go of Professor Georg.. he'll lost his footing."
"Oohhh Professor Georg." Elsa teased Georg as she chuckled, "What a coincident, madame.. Just hours ago, we've been talking about you and now you're here."
Maria looked at Elsa and raised her eyebrows, "Talking about who?"
"You… madame." Elsa smirked, "And your children of course."
Maria looked at her then to Georg as he said, "Mari- er.. Ms. Rainier, Elsa Laurels, the guidance counselor of Grand Mountain Secondary School. Elsa, Maria Rainier, the-"
"Of course I know her Georg.. who wouldn't know the gracious designer behind the blooming brand. How do you do, Mrs. Rainier. Georg spoke highly of you." Elsa smiled, "...and your children."
Maria smiled as she shake hands with Elsa, feeling something unwanted deep on her stomach as the image of her beside Georg stayed in her mind.
"Ah.. and you must be Elisabeth and Frederick, the unlikely but lovely twins." Elsa smiled and looked at the girl glued on her mother's waist, "And the shy and cute Martha. Georg told me that you three are so not those things I've heard from others and now that I see you, I'll make him pay for never telling me how enchanting you three children are!"
Elisabeth and Frederick smiled their 'thanks' while Martha looked at her mother. Maria gave Elsa a genuine smile as she patted Martha's hair and whispered, "Thanks for the compliments, Ms. Laurels… I have to say that your right eyelash is falling."
Elsa went to a deep shade of red as her hands quickly went to fetch the fallen eyelash and excused herself to the bathroom.
Maria turned to Georg, who's already looking at her, and nodded, "What a coincidence, Professor Georg."
Georg nodded, "Indeed, Ms. Rainier. I am very sorry if Elsa's a bit nosy-"
"-Oh no worries.. I found her quite… comely and…. nice. Now if you please excuse us, we have to see the host." Maria smiled and walked away with the children, each giving him smiles as he smiled back.
"Oohhh! Georgie, you didn't told me that your dear Ms. Rainier is coming to town." Max teased once Maria and his children are out of earshot.
"It's a coincidence, Max. Just coincidence…" Georg retorted, his eyes not leaving the magnetic sight of Maria and her children.
This is going to be a long party… he thought as he sipped on his drink.
