It's been a long time since I updated and I hope some of you are still interested.
After explaining to the kids that I was their sister, I decided to stay over and when I wake up, I expect Alex to still be in the bed but when I reach over the only thing I feel is cold sheets. After putting myself together, I walk downstairs and find him making breakfast for the kids.
"Good Morning" Alex greets me when I walk into the kitchen. "Meredith had to go in early and check on one of her patients so we've got to get these kiddos ready."
"Alrighty. Breakfast smells good." I say as I fill a travel mug with coffee. "Are you taking the kids to school?"
"Yeah."
"Ok. I have to be there earlier than you so we'll just take separate cars." I tell him while gathering my bag.
"Sounds good, but first, I need one of these" He says as he wraps his arms around my waist and pulls me in for a kiss, separated by the kids giggling.
"Ok" I say, pulling away with a smile "I have to get going, I will see all of you later." I press a kiss onto each of the kids heads and give a lingering glance in Alex's direction.
I pull out of the driveway and start making my way towards the hospital. A red light stops me and when it turns green, I start towards the intersection. Then everything goes black.
I get the kids off to school and when I get to the hospital I start my morning rounds. I'm filling my charts when Amelia walks up to the nurses station.
"Hey, where's Eleanor? She's supposed to be on my service today."
"She hasn't shown up yet? She left the house before I did with the kids."
"Well, she must have taken the scenic route to the hospital because she isn't here." Her pager goes off cutting the onerstation short. "911 in the pit. If you hear anything from her, let me know."
My mind is going a hundred miles a minute when I feel a hand on my arm.
"Alex, did the kids get off to school alright?" Meredith asks with a concerned look in her eyes.
"Yeah, yeah, they're fine."
"Are you ok? I asked you three times before you acknowledged I was here."
"Amelia just asked where Eleanor was. She hasn't shown up to the hospital yet but she left the house before I did. I don't know where she could be." For the second time today, I'm cut off by a pager.
Meredith checks her pager, "911 to the pit. I have to get going but I'll keep an eye out for her. I'm sure it's just some kind of misunderstanding."
As she runs down to the pit, I hope it really is just a misunderstanding.
I get down to the pit and walk up to my patient. "What's going on?"
"We've got obvious head trauma and a lot more going on. This girl was hit hard by a semi. Pupils have a delayed response." One of the ER doctors reports.
"Alright, let me get in there."
As I step up to the patient, I notice how her dark hair is matted with blood. I go to check her pupils, when I realize where Eleanor Rhett has been all morning.
I get down to the pit and see Amelia is already working on the patient.
"What do we have?" I ask as I start gloving up.
The doctors list her injuries and I get an ultrasound setup to check for fluid in the abdomen. I notice Amelia looks very strange and isn't checking the patient as quickly as she usually does.
"Everything ok, Amelia?"
"Umm, no, I don't think so."
"Unresponsive?" I ask, thinking she's talking about the status of the patient.
"Response is there, but it's Rhett."
"Alex told me she hadn't shown up for work."
"Yeah, but this is why."
"There's a lot of free fluid in the belly. Amelia," I say, turning to look at her, "what are you talking about?"
"The patient is Eleanor."
I finally pause to look at the patient's face and there it is - the face of my dead husband's daughter.
Amelia and I lock eyes over Eleanor's hurt body. "How are we going to tell Alex?"
"Tell me what?" I ask as I walk into the exam room.
"What are you doing down here?"
"I figured if you and Amelia were paged, I would come give you guys a hand. What's going on with her?"
"She's not pediatric. You can go work on something else." Meredith says.
I shoot her a strange look. "Well, that doesn't mean I don't know how to take care of a patient. It's a slow day, are you really turning down help?" I look at Meredith and then at a frozen Amelia.
"It's Eleanor." Amelia says quietly.
I rush to the head of the bed, it's her, it is really her.
I feel someone pulling me away and I'm in too much shock to put up a fight, I can't hear anything. Eleanor's hurt.
