Chapter 4: The Mall
Nessie's POV
I awoke the next morning to fresh snowfall outside. It was a beautiful sight to behold. I loved snow. Playing in snow, building snowmen, having snowball fights with my friends. None of my friends were here right now though. They'd all traveled to visit relatives for the holidays. I didn't mind though.
I laid in bed for a few minutes unwilling to leave the warmth that my sheets and blankets provided. I reached out for my phone to look at the time. I was confused when I grabbed a strange cellphone instead of my own. Until I remembered last night's mishap at Starbucks when Jacob and I somehow accidentally switched phones. I remembered how awkward it had been when his sister Bella had called. She didn't say a lot to me when I told her I wasn't Jacob. I gave her my number to get in contact with Jacob and then that was the end of the call.
I willed myself to get out of bed only when my stomach growled. Food was the only thing that could get me out of bed on a morning like this. I could hear my brother already eating breakfast as I descended the staircase.
"Where's mom and dad?" I asked him.
"At the hospital. They got called in early. Somebody called out I guess and you know how mom and dad are always complaining about how understaffed they are,"
"Yes. They really need to hire more people," I said as I started cooking some eggs and bacon.
As I was cooking I started thinking about what I was going to do today. Then I realized something. I hadn't finished my Christmas shopping. Which meant I'd have to go to the mall. I groaned when I thought about how jam packed the mall was going to be. But I didn't have a choice. I was running out of time and I needed Christmas gifts.
"Why are you groaning?"
"Because I just realized that I have to go the mall,"
"But you love the mall?" he looked very confused.
"Not a few days before Christmas. That's when there's so many people at the mall that it's hardly an enjoyable experience. But I don't have much of a choice,"
"Are you going to buy my Christmas present?"
"As if you deserve one after you stole my laptop and deleted my History essay,"
"Oh come on not that again!" he squirmed uneasily. "I bought you a gift,"
I resisted the urge to laugh. My insides were actually hurting from holding in my laughter. The truth was that I already had gotten him a gift. I'd gotten him a Play Station Gift Card since I knew that our parents were going to give him that Play Station 5 he had been asking for. I just liked messing with Nick.
I on the other hand wasn't sure what my parents were going to give me. They'd gotten me a brand new Gray Mercedes C 300 Coupe. It was the exact car that I'd wanted but never in my wildest dreams did I think they would buy it for me. I almost died of shock when I unwrapped a car key with the famous three star emblem. Needless to say they spent a lot of money on me already and I'd be perfectly fine with it if they decided the car would double as my birthday and Christmas gift.
I ate my breakfast quickly thinking it would be better to get to the mall sooner rather than later. Maybe if I was lucky there wouldn't be so many people.
I walked as quickly as I could through the snow covered sidewalk to the garage. Unfortunately the process of putting the chains on my tires couldn't be rushed.
I listened to Christmas music in the car to lighten my already stressed out mood. I had already braced myself for the worst when I pulled into the nearly full parking lot. I suddenly got very lucky when I spotted an empty parking space right next to another nice looking Mercedes. I parked before anybody else could beat me to the spot.
I was about to get out when I noticed the people getting out of the Mercedes next to me. Three extremely beautiful teenage girls. They were the most beautiful people I'd ever seen in my whole life. There was something inhuman about it. Their pale complexion caught my attention also.
They seemed to notice that they were being watched because they simultaneously turned around and looked at me the exact same time. I held my gaze in awe of their beauty and gold eyes. Gold eyes, pale skin, inhuman beauty. They perfectly fit my definition of vampires in Twilight. That's what caught me off guard.
I shook my head. I was being ridiculous and I knew that. I had just written a story. A story that had been taken down and stolen from me. Although the short girl matched my depiction of Alice. The blonde girl perfectly matched my description of Rosalie. The third girl reminded me of Bella. Although the Bella in my story was human and thus didn't have pale skin or gold eyes.
I shook my head again. I looked away from them hoping that now that I wasn't staring at them like a creep that they'd leave. A minute later I looked back and to my relief they were gone. It was safe to leave my car.
All thoughts of those strange beautiful girls were soon gone as I concentrated on not getting killed by other drivers who did not seem to be paying much attention to where they were going.
The inside of the mall wasn't much better either. "Excuse me," I almost jumped out of my skin when an ice cold finger tapped my shoulder. It was the Bella-like girl I'd seen earlier in the parking lot.
"Can I help you?" I asked the strange girl.
"Yes I need to talk to you Renesmee. It's urgent-"
"Who are you and how do you know my name?"
"I'm Bella Cullen. It's about that story that you wrote-"
"What are you talking about?"
"Twilight. That story that you published online. It's more real than you realize,"
I pulled away from her "You're really starting to freak me out lady. More real than I realize? It's just a story,"
"Nessie-"
"Look just stay away from me. You're really freaking me out,"
I had only taken one step when the other two girls appeared. "We really need to talk to you about that story Nessie," the girl that looked like my Rosalie said.
"Well I don't want to talk. I don't even know who you guys are. So just leave me alone!" I stormed right past her.
"I told you two ambushing her like that wouldn't work. You should've listened to me," the short Alice-like girl said.
I walked away from them as fast as I could do so. It didn't take me long to lose those strange girls in the crowd. Who were they? How did they know me? Wait were they the ones that hacked my computer and erased my Twilight and New Moon documents? Did they have something to do with my website suddenly disappearing off of the internet? I didn't know the answer and I wasn't sure that I wanted to find out.
I made it to the next store without incident. My brains were a little scrambled now and I had a hard time concentrating on what I needed to buy.
Then I saw them walking toward me again. I walked away quickly before they even had a chance to approach me. My heart was beating fast even when I managed to lose them again.
I didn't see them again and I was able to continue shopping in peace. Good. Maybe they decided to give up. Weirdos.
A few hours had gone by and I was hungry for lunch. The food court was packed by the time that I got there. I stood in line at Panda Express. As I waited in line I looked around for a table to sit. I thought for sure I was going to have to stand around and pounce on a table when it was free. But I got lucky once again.
I was just finishing up my food when I heard someone say "Nessie we urgently need to talk," I nearly choked on my soda when those same three girls approached me.
I couldn't tell for sure who spoke but I was pretty sure it was the blonde girl.
"I don't even know who you are,"
"Yes you do and that's exactly why we need to talk. You know that I'm Rosalie and over there is Alice and Bella,"
I stood up from the table without saying a word. A cold hand grabbed my shoulder and stopped me. It was Bella "Let go of me," she reluctantly dropped her hand.
I walked away without so much as a glance backwards. I needed to get out of here. But there was one more store that I needed to go to first.
An hour and a half later I was finally heading back to my car. I put my cars in the trunk before getting into my car.
When I tried to turn the car on nothing happened. I tried to start the engine again but nothing. I tried to start it again. Nothing. What the hell? This was a brand new car. It shouldn't be having problems. I tried to turn on the engine again to no avail.
I got out of the car unsure of what to do. I didn't know anything about fixing cars. I didn't have my phone either to call anyone either.
My heart skipped several beats when out of nowhere I saw the three girls walking toward me again. Rosalie was toying with something in her hands.
"Look Nessie we really need to talk to you. So how about this. You agree to come with us and in exchange I'll reattach your car battery. How does that sound?"
