Promt: hey I was wondering if you could do one where the Halsteads are super scared of needles and their parents have to hold them still at the doctors. Thank you

Promt: Will Whump

Okay y'all here we go. Also of course I had to make it more dramatic. Hehe.

"William stop tapping your foot!" Pat demanded, placing his hand on his eldest's thigh while he made his request.

"But I don't like doctors." Will answered, his brown eyes looking up towards his father, puppy dog eyes flashing working their magic. Pat softened at the look. Will knew that his parents would be weak when he gave them that look, it worked every time.

"Me neither kid." Pat told him, his hand moving to give Will a reassuring rub on his boney back. "But sometimes you gotta do things that you don't like, this is one of them."

"I'm scared." Will admits, giving his father the exact same look that he knows will melt the man's heart. Pat was about to answer him, tell him that it was going to be okay, that there was no need to be scared.

"Halstead." A nurse called, her voice much to excited for Will's taste.

Pat took one year old Jay from his wife and lifted the little one into his arms. He chuckled as the boy immediately turned to go back to his mother. Ellie on the the contrary took Will's small hand into her own and the four followed the nurse back to the room.

"Everything off accept for underwear. Another nurse will be in to get some numbers before the doctor comes." She informed, allowing the door to click behind her as she told them all that they needed to know.

Ellie stayed with Will, helping him get undressed though he didn't really need help at the ripe old age of four. Pat on the other hand did need to help Jay get his clothes off. The little boy squirmed constantly, still trying to get back into his mother's arms.

Just as promised another nurse did come into the room, her dark hair bobbing as she entered. She smiled softly at Jay, who now had his head buried in his father's shirt. Pat picked him up and followed the nurse toward the scale that was placed in the corridor at the end of the hall. Jay was sat down first, placed on the baby scale over a small sheet.

"Let's see how big of a boy you are!" The nurse exclaimed, making Jay's pouting lips curve up into a smile. The scale beeped underneath Jay and he jumped a little bit, making his father chuckle from his standing position beside his youngest. "20 pounds! That's one big boy!" The nurse praised lifting him up and onto another bed, this one to measure his height. Jay tried to squirm away but Pat managed to hold him still for the couple of seconds it took to get his height measured. "Good boy." The woman praised, moving so that Pat could pick Jay up when she was done.

"You're up baby." Ellie told Will, her hand dropping his. She knew that he was nervous, knew that he hated the doctors office and she wanted to do everything to comfort her baby. "She's just making sure that you're growing, nothings going to hurt." Will apprehensively stepped onto the scale and watched intently as the nurse balanced the scale.

"40.2 pounds! That's pretty darn big, guess mom feeds you two well." That one make Will smile, despite his nerves. "Okay stand up against this wall, make sure you stand super tall." The nurse instructed, Will followed her directions eagerly, wanting to know just how tall he really was. "Okay perfect." The nurse said, her hand reaching out to pull Will back to his mother. The family was led back towards their previous room. "I need their blood pressures, heart rates and temps." The nurse said, motioning with her hand for Jay to be placed into the bed.

"Come little man." Pat said placing his youngest into the bed. The nurse grabbed his little arm, wrapping the blood pressure cuff around his small arm and letting it squeeze. Jay held mostly still and let her do what she needed to. Then she placed a small, sticky monitor on his left big toe. It bothered him quite I bit and he was determined to get it off. Pat had to hold his arms still just so he wouldn't take off the contraption. He made funny faces at the little boy the whole time keeping him distracted.

"Can you keep holding him like that? He won't like this bit." The nurse told Pat while undoing Jay's diaper. She pulled his legs up to his chest and slid the thermometer in. Jay flinched under his father's hold, letting out a squeak but for the most part showing no reaction. The contraption beeped and was slid out. "Good boy!" The nurse praised, strapping together Jay's diaper. "Your turn honey." She said, watching as Jay was lifted from the bed and into his father's waiting arms.

"No. I don't want to." He replied, hoping that the mean tone in his voice would work.

"Will." His mother said, warning him. It was when she looked at the fear on his features that she softened, crouching down to his height and brushing his unruly red locks away from his forehead. "Everything is going to be okay. This part doesn't even hurt. I promise." She explained, taking his hand and then helping him onto a stool so he could climb onto the bed. The blood pressure cuff was gently placed on his arm and he held tight to his mother as the numbers were taken. She kept a gentle hand on his bare back, rubbing it up and down to comfort her child. He didn't mind the pulse monitor that was placed momentarily on his pointer finger, nor did he mind the thermometer placed under his arm.

"They did great! Doctor will be in any minute." She told them, closing the door after both parents nodded.

The entire appointment was quick. With both boys being perfectly healthy it wasn't too difficult and ended very quickly. Now it was time for the thing they dreaded the most. Shots.

It wasn't really the worst thing that could happen. The time when Will cracked open his head and ended up needing nine stitches just above his eyebrow definitely topped a couple of tiny needles. Pat and Ellie remembered holding him down and listening to his screams as he fought against their hands. Still, the fear written on Will's features was making everyone uncomfortable, even little Jay who was being swayed softly in his father's arms. Being nearly his nap time he was happy to be relaxing in the comforting embrace. His eyes nearly dropped closed when the door clicked open, his head lifting from the burly shoulder, filled with curiosity. It was the same nurse as before, now with two trays in her hands.

"Can you put him down on the bed for me." She asked politely, taking the tray with three syringes and putting them onto the bed beside Jay. "Okay, so it'll be three injections for this little one today. I've got MMR, chicken pox and hep B. These are all ones that he's received before so we shouldn't have to worry about any adverse reactions." Pat nodded and took Jay's hands into his own, using his body to block the one year olds view of the impending procedure. He watched as Jays small but chubby thighs were wiped down with alcohol swabs. "Okay baby." The nurse said while taking the cap off the needle.

A bloodcurdling scream left Jays lips as the needle entered his leg. He tried his hardest to squirm from his father's grasp, unsuccessfully. Pat moved the hair from his son's face, trying his best to comfort him as the second needle was plunged inside. A light kiss was placed on the little ones cheek from his mother who stood at his head, as the last one poked him. He let himself breathe, the heavy sobbing causing him to hold his breath. Finally it was over. Pat didn't wait for bandaids to be stuck onto his youngest before hoisting the distressed baby into his arms.

"Ow..." he sobbed, breaking both of his parents hearts. Pat rubbed his soft back gently until his cries died down, turning in mere whimpers.

"All done little man." Pat encouraged, bouncing Jay on his hip. The baby's head fell into the crook of his father's neck, his hands holding tightly to the cotton shirt. He sniffled and looked towards his mother, who offered a smile and a kiss on the forehead. He instantly felt better. "See that wasn't that bad." Pat encouraged, hoping to ease the worry that was written on his eldest son's face.

"Come on sweetie." The nurse said, holding out her arms to help lift Will onto the bed. He turned his head back into his mother's chest, hoping that she wouldn't really make him do this.

"It's okay baby." She whispers, standing from her position in the rolling chair, lifting Will with her. He whimpered at her movement, trying to squirm out of her arms, but to no avail. He let out a cry, desperately looking towards his dad to help him. Pat placed Jay down, who although wasn't too pleased with this new arrangement, was rather content to play with the many toys his parents had brought to distract him. "Lay down." Ellie told him, helping to tilt his upper body down. His mother took hold of his arms, while Pat grabbed his legs, currently being cleaned with alcohol wipes.

"Okay sweetie... little poke." The nurse said, taking no time in between her words to plunge the sharp needle into Will's thigh.

That's not so bad

The second shot made him squeeze his mother's hand, his grip making her knuckles go white. The third one forced a sob to leave his lips, the salty tears making their way down his pale face. It was the forth one that made him scream, his whole body flinching as a snapping sound was heard.

"Ow! Stop doing them." Will cried, his mother softly brushing the wetness on his face away.

"Oh dear! I'll go get the doctor! Make sure he doesn't move." The nurse told them. Ellie looked back to see drops of blood pooling on her son's thigh, the needle sticking out of the hole at an awkward angle.

Ellie hugged her son extra tight, the door creeping open as the doctor entered. He threw on some gloves and proceeded to pull out the needle, using what looked almost like pliers. Some gauze was placed atop the wound, which was bleeding quite a bit. Ellie yanked Will into her arms, swaying softly while rubbing soft circles into his still bare back. Pat looked on with worry for his son, giving his wife a concerned glance.

"I'm so sorry, that should have never happened." The doctor told them once Will was calm enough that they could focus on anything but him. "The needle broke in his leg, this could lead to an infection so keep an eye on it." He explained, providing a couple of sheets of paper to the parents. "There are a bunch of symptoms listed here, if you notice any of these give us a call and we'll see him right away." They nodded, Pat moving to grab Will's clothes from the corner to help get him dressed. His face was buried in his mother's chest while his father got him dressed, his whimpers muffed by the material of her shirt.

"You wanna get out of here kid?" Pat asks, stroking the ginger hair away from Will's eyes. Will nodded, once again sniffling into his mother's shirt as she lifted his exhausted body from the exam table. The drive home was rather uneventful, Jay of course managed to fall asleep, they were way past nap time at this point and everyone knew he would be out the second the drive began. Both of the little ones were forced into bed as soon as the family arrived home, Pat and Ellie taking the opportunity to sneak in some rest too.

"You think he's ready to go to school?" Ellie asked, her head resting gently on her husbands chest.

"Well, we're going to have to send him at some point." Pat replied, brushing at the soft dark hair atop her head. "I know that you think that everything out in the world is out to get them, but those boys are tough and they will be just fine in the big scary world."

"Yeah... I know, still kinda weird that Will's going to school in the fall" she told her husband, feeling him nod in agreement. "Maybe we should have another one?" She asked, flashing her best puppy eyes and hearing him chuckle.

"I though you said you would never live with four Halsteads!" He answered.

"Four male Halsteads, if you just made me a daughter then it wouldn't be a problem." She answered jokingly.

"You know... I don't have much control over that." He teased. "And do you really want to start all over again?" He asked this time much more seriously.

"No it was just a thought I mean our baby is one, soon he'll be eighteen and..."

"Hey, I get it! But we can't keep them here forever. At some point they're going to leave we just have to accept that and make every moment last while they're little."

"Good point." Ellie said.

"But we can always practice." She didn't even need to look to see the smile on her mischievous husband's face. She slapped his chest in response causing both of them to burst out in laughter. That was until a small body crept up in front of them, tears in eyes, stuffed animal in hand.

"Baby?" Ellie asked, removing herself from the sea of blankets and towards Will, whose face was painted red with fever. Ellie's hand went immediately to his forehead, the back of her hand feeling it gently, sighing when she felt the heat radiating off him. "Let's go lay down." She said, placing her hand behind his head and leading him to the sofa that his father was on.

"I'll go get a thermometer and a popsicle." Pat said getting up as soon as he saw the miserable look on his son's face. He knew that a popsicle would make him feel better, that was the 'sick' food that they all loved. He returned shortly with the items and handed them to his wife, who was comforting Will by playing with the curly red hair on his head. He gave his son the red popsicle and he instantly took it. "Drop em." Pat instructed, his voice stern and powerful.

"No! I don't want that." Will yelped, his tear filled, pleading eyes locking with his mothers as she moved to kiss his forehead.

"Baby we have to see how warm you are, you might need medicine." Ellie tried to explain, a soft hand on his bare back. "I'll be super quick I promise."

"Fine." Will answered and shuffled his boxers down. Ellie helped him curl into her, his small hands fisting her shirt for comfort. She quickly placed the small infant thermometer in him, he shook and took in a strangled gasp.

"103.6!" She gasped taking his temp one more time and getting the same answer. "Can you start a cool bath, I'm going to get him some meds real quick." She said, pulling Will's boxers back over his hips, picking Will up off the couch and into her strong arms.

"Yeah okay." Pat replied, seemingly in a bit of shock but moving quickly to the bathroom to fill the tub up with cool water.

Ellie swayed as she held her oldest baby boy to her chest, the heat from his body radiating off of him. She sat him down on the counter measuring carefully some child fever medicine and then putting it into a syringe for him.

"Open." She demanded, her tone soft yet stern. Will did as told, gagging slightly at the disgusting taste but nonetheless swallowing the red tinted liquid. "Good... let's get you in the bath and cool you off, you're pretty warm." She told him, helping him to the bath tub, where his father had everything set up. She helped Will to strip until he was only in his underwear. He was just at that age where he had an issue with his mother seeing him naked anymore. She didn't care, nothing she hasn't seen before, I mean she changed most of his diapers but she still respected his privacy and so she left him in the bathroom with his father, instead deciding to check on her baby.

She peered into the nursery to see her little one still fast asleep in his white crib, the hand he had been sucking on falling from his small lips to rest under his cheek. By the time she was done looking at him she heard the bath draining and her son, soaking wet in a towel standing in front of her.

"I don't feel good." He told her, his body shivering as the cold air assaulted his exposed skin.

"I know baby, Why don't you get dressed and then we'll get you another popsicle?" She suggested, his still pink cheeks nodding.

"Can you help me?" Will asked, his head falling as though he was ashamed.

"Of course baby, lets go get you sorted." She told him, placing a hand on the back of his head to guide Will to his bedroom. She quickly got him dressed, taking note of the slightly puss filled hole in his leg but not making a big deal out of it, not wanting to freak him out. She got him another popsicle as promised and called her mother in law immediately. Though Ellie, Will And Jays mother was herself a nurse, Ms.Halstead, her mother in law was a doctor thus she called her telling her all of Will's symptoms and what she thought it was, asking the kind woman to come over and check him out. Of course she obliged, telling Ellie that she would be there with her medical bag in just a few minutes, despite it being nearly midnight.

A light knock was heard at the door and Ms. Halstead let herself into the green rimmed home. She made her way to the couch where a fever ridden Will was laying, his mother stroking his damp hair as he sucked on a red popsicle. The women smiled at each other as Ms. Halstead felt her grandson's forehead with the back of her hand sighing at the warmth that raidiated off the little one. Will was distracted by a cartoon playing on the television in front of him and barely noticed his grandmother looking at the small cut in his thigh. Well that was until she prodded to close and he let out a yelp.

"Ow!" He screamed, reaching down to clutch his small leg. "Don't touch it." He corrected, looking to his mother for some backup, disappointed when he received none.

"Honey I have to, it's going to make it feel better." The eldest woman told him, now looking towards her son Pat for some help.

"She's right bud, you have to let her help." He told him, returning to the living room after cleaning up the bathroom. Will sighed, his fight ending quickly, maybe if he had more energy he would have fought a little harder but his lack of sleep, fever, and clear infection was pushing his body towards exhaustion.

"Fine." He huffed a touch a fear clearly written on his face.

"It's infected for sure, I'll have to clean it out and get some antibiotics in him pretty quick." She told the parents, looking down at a very miserable looking little boy. They nodded at her. "I'll need to put an IV in, we have to lower this fever."

"I'll hold him." Ellie said sitting down beside her son and then pulling the little body into her comforting arms. They made quick work of pulling his arm straight to place the IV in the crook of his elbow. The alcohol wipe brushing his arm took him out of his daze as he realized what they were doing.

"I don't want another shot!" He yelled, pulling his arm into his chest and looking into his mother's blue eyes for comfort.

"I know baby but we have to... it's going to make you feel better." Ellie said, her hand brushing his soft cheek and Pat grabbed his son's arm and straightened it again so his mother could slide a small needle in.

Will let out a squeak when he felt the poke but managed to stay relatively calm. The IV bag was held above him. Ellie stroked his damp hair away from his slender face. She took him further into her arms and rocked his small frame gently in her arms.

"I'm tired." Will announced.

"How bout we check your temperature one more time and if it's down we'll all go to bed." Ellie said. Will let out a squeak, announcing his displeasure. "Real quick. Promise."

She turned Will on his side, this time allowing his grandmother to pull his boxers down and put the thermometer in.

"It's down to 101.3." Pat said.

"Good." Ellie comforted. Pat gave his mother a hug as she announced her leaving. "You ready to go to bed?" Ellie asked, brushing Will's hair from his forehead and kissing his temple. Will nodded in response, holding his mother's shirt tightly. She picked his small body up slowly, holding him comfortingly and feeling the warmth radiate off of him. Ellie swayed as she climbed the stairs, her baby still in her arms.

"Thanks mama." Will said, his brown eyes glossy with exhaustion as he was laid back into his bed.

"For what?" She asked.

"Just thanks."

"I love you... you know that right?" Ellie asked, laying Will into bed, her hand brushing over his still feverish skin.

"I know... I love you too." Will replied.

"Can you promise me something?" Ellie asked as she pulled the blanket up to cover Will up to his shoulders. Will nodded in response, his eyes fluttering as he fought sleep. "When it's just you and Jay..." she choked up a bit, "can you take care of him?" She asked.

"I always will." Will replied, a smile creeping over his small features to match that on his mother's face.

'And he always did'
