Chapter 8: Alone In the Woods

Nessie's POV

I was physically drained for the rest of the evening. My brain, on the other hand, was on fire. As much as I wanted to deny everything I'd just been confronted with. I couldn't deny it. This was really happening. Fantasy had just become reality.

Vampires were real. Apparently my father is one himself. But if that were true then why was I so completely, well, human? If half of my genetic makeup was vampire then why didn't I have super speed or super strength and most importantly a thirst for blood?

I'd never given much thought to the past that I could no longer remember but now it was all that I could think about. Maybe I'd had powers before and something happened to change that. Maybe whatever it was that caused me to lose my memory caused me to lose whatever vampire powers that I had.

I sighed. I had so many questions and so little answers. Vampires are real. No matter how many times the words echoed through my head it still seemed so surreal to me. How many mythical creatures were walking amongst us undetected?

I tossed and turned in bed for about an hour before I gave up on the idea of sleeping. I quietly slipped out of bed and went for the medicine cabinet in the bathroom. Some NyQuil would certainly do the trick since I couldn't quiet my mind down enough to sleep naturally.

I filled up the plastic cup and drank it in one shot. I went back to bed and closed my eyes when I started to feel the medicine taking effect.

I woke up the next morning feeling very refreshed and alert. The sun was shining brighter than usual today. I'd overslept about an hour thanks to my drug use but I didn't mind.

As I looked around the kitchen for something to eat I started making plans for today. Since it was sunny out I thought it would be a good idea to go for a hike through the woods. Alone time was what I needed right now. Plus I loved hunting for Pokémon in the woods.

After eating breakfast and washing my dishes I rushed back to my room and got dressed. My parents and my brother were barely waking up when I was walking out the door. Nick said something along the lines of "Where's the fire?" while I rushed out.

I drove for about fifteen minutes before I reached the woods. It was so lonely when I shut off my engine that I could feel the birds chirping in the trees above me.

I loved the peace and serenity that being alone in the woods brought me. It was my place of solitude. My place to get away when I was really stressed out.

I took a deep breath and started walking away from the main road. The silence was only broken by the occasional sounds of animals. I'd even turned the sound off on my phone so as not to disturb the peace.

My mind flashed back to a previous time that I'd been walking through this very same forest. It was several weeks ago. This was where I'd originally come up with the concept of Twilight. I'd been struggling to come up with a concept for my creative writing assignment when I decided to go hiking hoping to get some kind of inspiration for a story.

When I saw a herd of deer pass right in front of me I suddenly envisioned them being chased and attacked by a supernatural creature. A vegetarian vampire. Then the rest of the story quickly formed in my head. A girl named Isabella Marie Swan moves to the town of Forks, Washington and meets a vampire named Edward Cullen. The two star crossed lovers fall in love.

I raced home as fast as I could and right away got to work on my story which seemed to flow so naturally right from my brain to the words typed on my laptop.

This place had been the inspiration behind my not so fictional story. It seemed odd to me even then how the story just flowed through my brain so effortlessly. How I knew my characters so well so quickly.

Now I know that that it wasn't just a story. Somehow someway my story was a memory. A memory perhaps of a story that had been told to me before I'd gotten amnesia all those years ago.

"Hello there,"

"Ahhhh!" I screamed when I saw that I wasn't alone. The red-eyed man stood several feet away from me. I ran through the memories in my head to see if he matched any character in my story. He didn't.

My heart pounded loudly in my ears. "Who are you?"

"That is none of your concern child," his smile sent shivers down my spine. "But you shouldn't be walking through the woods all alone. You never know what you might encounter out here all alone. But no matter. I have been looking for you for many years now to get my revenge on you after what you did to me. You hid well until recently. That story you wrote really was a big help kid,"

"Leave me alone," my voice sounded weak and scared even to my own human ears.

I ran as fast as I could but he caught up to me quickly and grabbed my arm. I fought him as hard as I could but it was no use. Suddenly I felt sharp teeth slicing into my left arm. I screamed in agony. My arm was suddenly on fire!

"You know I'd kill you but I think letting you suffer this way is much more satisfying,"

I screamed and tears fell from my eyes as the fire in my arm began to consume everything in it's path. I looked around and saw that the strange vampire had disappeared.

I screamed again as the fire grew stronger and stronger. I looked and was surprised to see that there was nothing physically wrong with my left arm. Then I saw the teeth marks on my arm. Then I realized what happened.

The vampire had bitten me. The fire was caused by the venom that had been injected into my body.
