Chapter 10: Newborn

Nessie's POV

I wasn't sure what my next move was going to be. I knew that once I went back home I was going to be faced with a lot of questions. Questions about where I'd been, what happened to me, and why I suddenly had red eyes. Those were all questions that I couldn't answer without sounding absolutely crazy.

I could go to the Cullens. That seemed like the next most logical move. I could call them and tell them where I was and explained what happened to me. It was a good plan until I realized that what was left of my phone battery had died out.

I walked around for awhile thinking and trying to come up with a second plan. I could drive there. I found my way back to the main road where I'd parked only to find that my car was gone. So the police had found the car but they hadn't found me. That was odd. Another thought occurred to me just then. Why hadn't the Cullens been able to find me?

Something strange was going on and I needed to get to the bottom of it very quickly. I decided that I would walk all the way to their house. That was a good idea.

The smell didn't really hit me until I'd reached the city. The burning sensation in my throat crashed through to the forefront of my mind. I needed blood and I needed it now.

Blood. That is what was on my mind. Blood. I needed it and I needed it right now. I could smell it. I was going to find it and I was going to drink it. Nothing was going to stop me from drinking it.

Tracking the smell of the blood was easier then I thought it would be. My heart was beating fast. The only sound that registered itself in my brain was the sound of something or someone crying.

I thought nothing of it as I got closer to the source of the scent. I walked around the corner leading down a back alleyway and spotted the source of the blood right away. Just a few feet away from where I stood lay a woman with a large gash torn through her stomach. Right next to her was a small baby.

All thoughts of blood had been pushed to the back of my mind as I reached down to pick up the baby. The baby looked at me with an intelligence that you just didn't see in newborn babies.

Then I realized why when the baby's scent reached my nose. It was neither human or vampire but somewhere down the middle. It was a mixture. This baby was a hybrid. Just like me.

I looked down at the baby's mother and figured out what had happened. The baby had ripped it's way out of it's mother's womb like I had. But unlike my mother this woman wasn't lucky enough to have another vampire around to save her in time.

I looked around for any sign that the baby's father was somewhere around but I found none. The baby started crying.

"It's okay little one," I rocked the baby gently. "You're going to be okay. I'm going to take care of you,"

I didn't know what I was doing but I couldn't leave this baby out here all alone. The baby cried again.

"Dont worry little um-" I glanced between the baby's legs quickly "little guy. I'll take care of you. I won't leave you all alone,"

Now that my mind was cleared from the bloodlust I knew that I had to get home to the Cullens right away. I needed their help. We needed their help.

I hadn't walked more than a few feet when I suddenly felt as if something had been drained out of my body. Something was wrong. I could feel it. The baby smiled and giggled as he reached up and placed his hand on my cheek. Then I saw myself. It wasn't like I was looking at a reflection. No. I was seeing myself as others saw me. The strangest part was that the red in my eyes was staring to fade. I could see specks of my own brown eyes beginning to return.

The image disappeared as soon as he pulled his hand away from my face. The strength that had left my body returned. Then I realized something. He'd shown me what he was thinking. That was my gift that I'd been born with. I'd discovered that if I concentrated hard enough I could still show people what I was thinking. I still had my gift and according to my family gifts don't manifest itself the same way twice. So this baby couldn't have the same gift as me unless...of course. Maybe he was gifted in the sense that he could steal other vampire's gifts. Maybe his gift was thievery.

"You're going to be trouble aren't you little one?"

He giggled. I smiled. It didn't matter. This little guy had already won me over. I walked right past a mirror that had been thrown and caught my reflection in the mirror. Much like in the vision the red eye color was fading. It was still there but I could see spots of brown in there that weren't there before. This was strange. Unless my beating heart was a sign that something had gone wrong when I'd been bitten. Or maybe I didn't become a full vampire at all. I'd been born a hybrid that somehow turned human. What if instead of turning me into a full vampire the venom instead just reactivated and awoken my vampire half? What if all the venom did was just undo whatever happened to me all those years ago?

It was just a theory but it made perfect sense to me. I would've run all the way home but there were too many humans around. I hoped my family were okay. A horrifying thought entered my brain. What if the Volturi had harmed them in someway? What if they'd gotten here and hurt them? No. I couldn't think that way. With any luck the Volturi's flight may have been delayed or canceled due to weather or something. I hoped.

The baby started crying again. I held him tight to my chest. "It's okay little guy. We're almost home,"

Another scary thought occurred to me at that moment. Would my family even want to help this little baby? Or would they just think of him as an unnecessary burden and want to get rid of him? Who would want to take care of him?

I tried to push those thoughts far from my mind as I turned onto the path that would lead me to my the Cullen house. I walked right up the walkway to the door and knocked.

Less than a minute later the door opened revealing my grandfather. In one second he'd gone from looking extremely stressed and worried to looking extremely shocked and confused. He was probably wondering why his granddaughter, who'd been missing the past two days, was suddenly standing in his doorway with red eyes and carrying a naked newborn baby boy in her arms.

"Grandpa I can explain," Yeah, no I can't explain this at all.
