Chapter 11: Questions
Nessie's POV
"Nessie?" to say that my grandfather sounded shocked would be a huge understatement. "Oh my God it is you. What happened to you? Where have you been the last few days? Why do you have a baby?"
"Where is everyone?" I asked my grandfather before I answered any of his questions.
"They're out looking for you. We haven't stopped looking for you since you disappeared two days ago. We've all been worried sick! Where have you been? What happened to you?"
"Can I come in first? I think this little guy might need some medical attention," The poor baby was shivering. I wasn't sure if he had a fever or if he was just cold.
"I think you both need immediate medical attention. Come in," he ordered.
I nodded my head in agreement to his last statement. We both need medical attention. "Let's go to my office,"
I took a deep breath and followed my grandfather. "I was hiking in the woods when I was attacked,"
My grandfather froze so quickly that I almost walked right into him. "What attacked you?" I think he knew the answer he just wanted to hear me confirm it.
"A vampire,"
"He bit you," it wasn't a question. It was a statement of fact.
"Yes. I was hiking in the woods when he found in me. I think he knew me,"
"What do you mean he knew you? Did you recognize him? What was his name?" he asked as he continued walking to his office.
"No. But I'm sure he knew me. He said he'd been looking for me for years to get revenge on me for something that I did to him. But I still don't know what he's talking about," It was frustrating because the more I tried to remember the more the memory eluded me.
My grandfather looked just as baffled as I felt. "This must have something to do with your kidnapping all those years ago,"
"I don't know what happened between that vampire and I. But he bit me. He said it was revenge for whatever happened. He said he wanted me to suffer,"
"Nessie can you sit right there on the exam table for me? I'm going to run some tests on you,"
"Okay," I responded as I hopped up on the table. The little baby boy safely secured in my arms. He cried and I rocked him gently.
"Nessie where were you when you woke up?"
"Well after I realized that I had been bitten I walked to the nearest cave that I could find and I stayed there until the transformation finished," if that was really what happened. I wasn't sure I'd call it a complete transformation since I was only half vampire again.
My grandfather looked extreme confusion. "That is not possible," he shook his head.
"But it's the truth,"
"I'm not disputing what you're saying," he said as he poked my arm with something. I didn't look so I wasn't sure what he was doing. "But we've searched the woods where you vanished several times. So did the police. But we never found any trace of you. We should have been able to find you quite easily if you never left the area. Something doesn't make sense,"
"A lot of things don't make sense. Like why do I still have a heartbeat? Why are my red eyes starting to turn brown again?"
"I have a theory about that actually," he said. "I need to run some tests on you to be sure but I think the venom somehow just returned you to your original state. That of being half vampire and half human,"
I couldn't speak. So I just nodded my head in agreement. His theory was the same as mine. Then I remembered another very pressing matter. "What happened with the Volturi? Are they here?" I was not sure if I wanted to know the answer or not.
He sighed. "Well the only piece of good news we have received in the last two days is regarding the Volturi. They've had to delays their flights a few times due to bad weather. Alice says that if things stay on the course they're on now the Volturi won't be here for another week,"
"Well that is somewhat good news,"
"Somewhat," he agreed.
"Now I just have one last question,"
"Okay. What is it?"
"Where did this baby come from?" he asked he took him away from me.
"I was on my way here when I heard the sound of a baby crying," I started explaining. So I followed the sound and found him all alone in a back alleyway. He was right next to his mother's body. I think she had just given birth to him. But I think he's a hybrid like me,"
"You're exactly right. This baby is a hybrid. He must have ripped his way out of his mother's womb and she died instantly,"
I nodded. "Yes. That's what happened when I was born, right?"
"Yes but your mother was lucky enough that your father was around to act immediately and save her life. This baby wasn't so lucky unfortunately,"
I felt tears well up in my eyes. So young, so small, and he had no one to love him or care for him.
"But he is lucky that it was you that found him. If it had been a human who'd found him who knows what could have happened,"
"Is he okay?" I asked worriedly.
"His temperature is unusually high even for a hybrid. I don't why yet but I'll find out,"
"Grandpa?"
"Yes?"
"What are we going to do with him?"
"We're going to care for him of course,"
"I was afraid you'd just think he was an unnecessary burden on us right now,"
My grandfather actually stopped what he was doing and turned to look at me like I was crazy. "Did you really think that our family turn away anyone in need? A baby at that?"
"I-" I didn't know what to say. I was ashamed to admit that is what I had feared.
"Nessie I'd never turn away someone in need. Especially a baby. He'll be a wonderful addition to this family,"
"What?"
"He needs a family that knows about vampires,"
"and that's us," I added.
"Rosalie and Emmett will be thrilled," he said.
"They will?" I asked.
"As soon as they get home I'm going to ask them if they're interested in adopting him. It'll be a surprise. I won't even tell anyone about the baby until they get home,"
"When are they coming home?"
"I'm going to call them right now and tell them you're home. I'm sure they won't be long after that,"
