QUOTES
'AHHH! It is the one thing I have left, and still someone wants to take it from me! But for my utter failure... It is all that I deserve.'
'What is wrong, he asks. WHAT IS WRONG? What is right is a better question! Nothing is right anymore, ever since I lost my bright red megaphone!'
'Look at that fiery passion in her eyes! Marvel at the strength of her spirit. Be HYPNOTISED by her daring voice!'
'Script? My movies do not have a script! Why force my actors to conform to someone else's written word when they can unleash their genuine real selves? My actors simply get on stage and GO! That is how the best movies are made!'
'It's your HEART I'm talking about, Luigi! Your compassion! Your KINDNESS! When I lost my precious megaphone, you stepped forward to help me in my time of desperate need. I thought no one would dare approach me while I was trapped in an endless void of sadness! But you... you DID! You cared none for any sort of prize or reward. You did it because you WANTED to.'
'But you cannot go unrewarded. It simply will not do! Alas, I have nothing that is worth your kindness. If I could lift up this very hotel from the GROUND and give it and all the treasure within it to you, that would be but an ASTEROID in the UNIVERSE of your kindness!'
BIO
Mortimer Spookus is known for three things in the hotel – his overdramatic speeches, his love for making movies, and his kind and gentle attitude. While most of the ghosts will easily admit that some of the other workers annoy them to varying degrees, Morty is the one that no one can say anything bad about. He is everyone's best friend.
His passion for the film-arts started when he was just five years old. He, along with his parents and recently-born little sister Adriana, watched the premiere of Snow White and the Seven Toads. The way the moving pictures could invest the audience into the story they were telling amazed him. The audience laughed. They cried. They felt like they had been welcomed into a whole new world. And Morty loved it. He wanted to recapture the sensations he felt while watching it, and he wanted to give that to other people himself.
His drive to create movies really got started when his father Harrison gifted him a bright red megaphone for his sixth birthday. Before anyone in the family could afford a camera, Morty had so much fun acting out the movies he would make. His sister often joined in, even though she barely knew what a movie even was yet.
Once he got old enough to afford his own film camera, you'd expect the quality of his movies to increase. This… is not exactly what happened. His movies are rather infamous for having bizarre dialogue, out-there plots, and questionable special effects. For all intents and purposes, his movies were bad. However, they were still incredibly popular and many are cult classics, thanks to Morty's self-awareness of his movies' oddness and the abundant heart and soul he puts into them regardless. 'So bad they were good' if you will.
Rather unsurprisingly, his sister acted in many of them. She was quite the blossoming actress. No matter how grand of a role he gave her, Morty always felt as though he was failing her. It wasn't just her; no movie he made seemed to be worthy enough for his actors, even though he was the only one who thought that way. Especially considering that most people asked to be in one of his crazy movies anyway.
Adriana found him dead at his home, leaning over an unfinished movie script that apparently involved a giant lizard monster terrorising a city, only to be stopped by a cowardly giant. No one really knows if his death was caused by an unknown health issue, or a jealous actor getting revenge. But it didn't matter to him. He loved making movies so much that his soul refused to stop just at death.
Everyone in the Last Resort loves him for his friendly and gentle attitude, in spite of his habit of going on long, overdramatic speeches. Due to his gentleness, Hellen ignores him when it comes to her plans. His only problem in afterlife is that he so badly wants to see his family again. Now, if only someone could help him finish that movie...
EXTRA NOTES
-His other inspirations include such movies as: Gone With the Lakitu, Sleeping Birdo, Citizen Kamek, Koopablaca, Raiders of the Belome Temple, Birdodemic (don't ask), The Goombafather, Galaxy Wars: The Koopa Pack Strikes Back, and the legendary Peoplebusters.
-He has other friendly ghosts who help him with his movies. They include: Scarlett Soulhansson the Slinker, Brad Quitt and Meryl Shriek the Oozers, Angelina Ghoulie the Hammer, Leonardo DeTrappio and Morgan Deman the Trappers, and Sigourney Deceiver the Goob. Like Morty himself, they are considering 'too nice' by Ms Gravely for her to bother with the mind tricks.
-His favourite genres are certainly romance and drama, though he loves working with all of them.
-No one can remember the last time he said anything negative about anyone but himself.
BEHIND THE SCENES
Aside from the expected 'overdramatic speeches' thing, my goal with Morty was to make him incredibly friendly and nice. Hence why he has nothing but genuine compliments to say to others, and why he tears into himself when he thinks that he failed his actors. This also helps provide an explanation as to why he isn't affected by Hellen Gravely's mind tricks.
'Spookus' is a pun on 'Lucas' as in 'George Lucas', because that was the first pun that came to mind and I liked it too much to change it. 'Walt' is obviously derived from 'Walt Disney'. His mortal family, meanwhile, are named after various voice actors from Snow White. I really liked that movie, as you can tell. As you can guess, the other ghosts on the floor are named after famous actors, but with punny last names that I didn't plan for. I was tempted to name them after deceased actors - naming them things like 'Carrie' and 'Robin' - but I decided against it, figuring that it was really tasteless.
