More than a dream
samjaymcnulty asked for a oneshot of *mid-season finale spoilers!* Snow and Emma getting ready for her birthday party in the wish realm. Emma's true self starts coming through. She makes the odd snarky remark, causing Snow to give her the mother glare.
"Come in." Emma said when she heard a light knock on the door. Her mom popped her head through, smiling.
"Hey there, birthday girl." She said chirpily. "I thought I'd come in and help you do your hair. You're not too old for that, are you?"
"Of course not, mommy." Emma said, still smiling. She sat down at her vanity as Snow picked up her brush.
"I've always loved your hair." Snow sighed. "It's so beautiful. So long. Not as easily tangled as mine. I've contemplated cutting it short like your father's so many times." Snow laughed. Emma's eyes widened. She suddenly had images flash through her head. Images like the ones in her dream last night. One where her mom did have short hair. Snow didn't notice Emma's shock. "So, I was thinking a nice braided do?"
"Anything to keep it out my face." Emma said nervously. Snow was surprised.
"You've always loved having your hair done." Snow probed. "What's going on."
"Nothing. I'm fine." Emma said, not wanting to admit she was scared her dream was more than a dream. "Just back off, ok?"
"Emma." Snow said sternly. Emma shrunk at the look she was giving her in the reflection of the mirror. "Today might be your birthday Ball, but I don't like this attitude you're showing. You've never had a bad attitude, Emma. You've always been so happy. Let's not change that now."
"You're right." Emma said, feeling guilty.
"Sorry, mommy. I don't know what came over me. I must just be nervous. You know I don't like being the centre of attention." Emma explained herself. Snow stroked her thumb down Emma's cheek.
"All is forgiven, sweetie." Snow assured her. "Let's put it behind us and just enjoy tonight, ok?" Emma smiled in response. Although something still wasn't sitting right with her.
