Hi, everyone.
As you may notice, this chapter is posted one day late. It is not because I was busy or such. It was intentional.
Why? Because the day this chapter is posted is the second anniversary of the story! I can't believe that I've been doing this for so long, and I want to thank everyone who have been following the story this far. Many things have happened, and the story has deviated much from my original plan, but so far I've had a great time. I look forward to the future, even though I'm still fairly certain that this story will end before its third anniversary.
On with the show. See you in the afterword.
[X][X][X]
Somewhere in deep space, a smaller ship moved along with an enormous fleet of capital ships belonging to ARKS. This particular type was commonly called a Team Ship, and while much smaller than the 70-kilometer long capital ships, it still had enough room to comfortably house nearly a hundred people. Team IGNITE had nowhere near that many members, so for them as a whole the Team Ship was spacious.
The ship had a common room at its back with a panoramic glass window, though rather than a window it was more like a dome mostly made of reinforced glass, enabling anyone to view the scenery outside, which right now was just the legion of ARKS ships at various distances. At the center of this dome, there was a cylindrical pedestal housing a seven meters tall glowing tree, which was the team's revered Photon Tree.
And yet right now a young man was dangling from the tree like a monkey. He had been doing this every day for quite some time, and anyone would think that this person had gone crazy.
"They should be together now so it should be safer, right? But what if she didn't land close enough for them to meet each other? But then again-"
The person speaking, Yukasa Seika, had been mumbling nonstop ever since he realized that his sister had gone missing, following their missing brother to an unknown planet.
"Mushi, will you ever quit it? You're really gonna go crazy if you keep this up"
Another young man spoke nearby, and was getting pretty tired of Yukasa's antics. Even though he had been tolerating it for quite a while out of sympathy.
"Come on, Mat! You know that I have gone crazy since long ago! I really should have put her on a leash!"
"Heh, suit yourself. But seriously, there should be something better to do other than dangling on the tree you worked so hard to nurture"
Seemingly not paying heed to Mat's words, Yukasa just moved himself into hugging the tree's trunk like a koala and continued mumbling gibberish words.
Mat just sighed. Everybody in IGNITE team knew for the longest time that among the Seika Siblings, Ryu was the relatively normal one. The rest of the siblings each had their own personality quirk, and without Ryu to keep them under control, this kind of thing would happen.
Ping!
A pinging sound was heard from the front of the room, which meant someone teleported in through the use of the teleportation pad at the opposite end of the room. Mat glanced towards it, expecting to see a familiar face. Indeed, the one approaching was a fellow team member, Yamino Seika.
Despite having the same surname, Yamino was not a blood-related sibling. He was a fully synthetic android who somehow, for some reason, had developed feelings on his own. Other team members had no idea how and why Yukasa and Hikaru had taken him in as their brother, but so far they seemed to be getting along well even though Ryu still wouldn't see Yamino as a brother yet.
Yamino walked towards the tree and spoke once he got close enough.
"Still going crazy, aniki?"
"...So what?"
"I got something that might make you snap out of it"
"Hmm?"
Yukasa immediately jumped from the tree and landed in front of Yamino, who immediately activated his photon interface.
"Just recently, a transmission was received. The readings indicate that the transmission came from somewhere in the vicinity of that planet"
Yukasa raised his head with his visible eye going wide. It was safe to say that his other eye went wide the same, since even though the right-half of his face was covered with a sinister half-mask, there was nothing wrong with his face. He just liked wearing it.
"...Not from Ryu-jiji, so don't get your hopes up yet. Anyway, here"
Yukasa activated his photon interface and began reading into what he had just received from Yamino.
"Hmm... Uh-huh..."
While Yukasa was intently reading the message, Yamino looked at Mat.
"I also sent you another copy if you're interested"
Mat shook his head.
"I'll save it for later"
Mat right now was more interested in how Yukasa would react upon reading the message, whatever the content was. He intended to read the message himself later and delve into details as necessary.
Less than one minute later, Yukasa's eye went a little wide, a sign that he had just noticed something.
"Isn't this... warp gate calibration data?"
"Yeah, the numbers are impossible to achieve, but that is likely the correct calibration setting to safely warp to that planet"
"Who sent this data?"
"If the signature at the end is to be believed, the message is from someone with the name Xiera of Ship 005: Laguz"
"Wait, what? Ship 005 should be still among the fleet, right?"
"Indeed, and we have gone through the list. There's nobody with the name Xiera on Ship 005"
"I see... did you just say 'we'?"
Yamino put his arms on his hip hearing Yukasa's question.
"Aniki, did you think I could go through that massive list within this short time. Of course I had help from Xiao"
"Right... So, what can we do with this data if you say the numbers are impossible to achieve?"
"Teeheehee..."
Yamino just let out his unique and annoying laugh upon hearing Yukasa's question. Seeing the response, Yukasa let out a small sigh and rolled his eyes.
"You know a way, don't you?"
"Yep, I do. The numbers are impossible for Gate Ships, but..."
Yamino's head slowly moved, as if he was looking at the Team Ship's interior as a whole. Yukasa took a few seconds to understand Yamino's intention, cracking a somewhat sinister smile when that happened.
"Heh, how long will it take?"
"Two or three weeks, give or take"
"Alright, that's plenty. Let's get everyone prepared"
Yukasa cracked his knuckles, and then he walked into the teleporter pad and disappeared from the room. Yamino on the other hand, walked to the back section of the ship and began delving into an extensive photon interface.
Watching everything that had just happened, Mat rolled his eyes and let out a small sigh. But he was smiling in mild excitement.
"Looks like the team will have a big adventure coming"
[X][X][X]
"Nneigggh!"
The sleipnirs neighed as the drivers pulled their harness, telling them to stop. Despite the loud sound they let out, the creatures complied, slowing down to a crawl and finally coming to a full stop. The two large carriages which were carrying teams of Workers had just arrived at the place where it all had begun; the courtyard of Count Femel's mansion. The sun was high in the sky with few clouds in sight, contrasting the mild darkness of dawn back then.
After less than a minute, the passengers of both carriages began to disembark one by one. Most showed delighted expressions as they stepped onto the ground, greatly relieved that they were really back home again after what they had gone through and barely survived. The exceptions were the team which had taken casualties, the members of which sported facial expressions showing varying degrees of grief.
Another exception was the one girl who seemed to be confused on what to do, seeing that she was looking right and left while holding her staff weapon dearly as her companion was unloading their luggage from the carriage. The companion noticed her behaviour and spoke.
"You look confused, Arche. Something in your mind?"
"I-I don't know, Roberdyck. I'm aware that we have to report our work to the client but..."
"Hmm?"
"I'm worried about my sisters... I don't know, I just... somehow have a bad feeling"
Roberdyck scratched his head, being confused as well on what to say.
"Well, normally I would say that you're worrying too much, but I've heard a few cases where someone said such thing, and then there were only regrets afterwards... Hmm..."
Roberdyck folded his arms, lowered his head, and closed his eyes with raised eyebrows. This state of his lasted for just about ten seconds before he opened his eyes and looked at Arche.
"Alright. I will take care of things here. Go home and get your sisters"
"Is... Is that alright with you?"
"Yeah, I guess this is what Leader meant when he wanted me to come with you"
Before Arche could respond to Roberdyck's words, suddenly a voice interrupted their conversation.
"I wish to think otherwise"
Both Arche and Roberdyck were startled by the sudden interruption and looked at the one who had just said it from the side just a single meter away.
"M-Momon-san. What did you mean by that?"
"You may think of this as another hunch, but I don't think your leader would have Roberdyck coming along just to file a report in your stead"
Roberdyck put his hand on his chin with serious expression. He also slightly nodded hearing Momon's words.
"Hmm, true. If I think about it, our team's plan was to consider the final reward forfeited because we were going to accompany Sheep and Rose to E-Rantel instead of returning here with other Workers. Leader wouldn't have me coming along just to collect money. He wanted me to stick with Arche"
Roberdyck looked at Arche with a determined smile.
"Is that alright with you?"
Arche averted her eyes from Roberdyck. She seemed to be having difficulties on deciding what to do.
"Uhh, this is my personal problem with my family, but... Yeah, I think I would appreciate company"
"That's decided then! Let's go right away! Oh, Momon-san, thank you for telling me"
Roberdyck bowed to Momon as a sign of gratitude and respect, and Arche immediately followed suit. Momon nodded slightly as a response.
"I wish you luck in your endeavors"
With that decided, both Arche and Roberdyck left the mansion grounds without telling anyone else. The distance from Count Femel's mansion to Arche's residence was not too far, but it would still take them about half an hour of walking to arrive there. While on the way, Roberdyck began speaking to Arche.
"Arche, may I ask something, now that we're alone?"
"What is it?"
"Is there anything you're willing to share with me regarding your problems? Not that I'm nosy or such, but I worry that keeping it to yourself have been burdening your mind, and that's not good"
Arche slightly smiled hearing Roberdyck's concern.
"No, I don't feel burdened by it. Especially now that it will be over soon. I haven't been telling any of you because my problem is, to put it short, a great shame"
"Oh..."
"I'm sorry about this, Roberdyck. But letting you know that my parents are no good is as far as I am willing to tell you, or anyone else in that matter. But I appreciate your concern"
Arche spoke with a small, but warm smile towards Roberdyck, who also smiled in return.
"Anytime, partner!"
The trip continued, and finally Furt Residence, the house where Arche lived, but not one she would call home, was just a stone's throw away. Arche was determined that the time had come for her to take her sisters away from this place, where the two persons whom Arche didn't want to consider as parents anymore had been leeching all the money she had earned.
However, by the time they almost reached the front gate, Arche noticed a carriage leaving from it, and she wondered if there had been a guest. Without paying much heed, Arche entered through the gate with Roberdyck following behind. Upon entering, she saw James, the family's longtime butler, standing still in the middle of the stone walkway. He noticed Arche coming, and for a moment his face looked pale.
"O-Ojou-sama...!"
"Yes, I'm back, James. What's the matter?"
James hurriedly walked to Arche, and then he suddenly fell on his knees right in front of her. His eyes were slightly red, and if looked closely one could notice traces of tears under them.
"H-Hey, what's wrong, James?"
James looked at Arche with an expression as if he was about to cry.
"It's terrible! The twins-!"
Arche's eyes went wide with her mouth slightly agape before she even heard what James was about to say. She just knew from the way he talked that something terrible had just happened to her sisters.
[X][X][X]
BLAM!
The door within Furt Residence was slammed open with surprisingly violent force from the small Arche. The ones in the room, namely the couple whom Arche now considered heartless monsters, were surprised by the sudden loud noise. They were sitting around the low table in the middle of the living room, on which there were several pieces of paper documents, and a small ornate wooden box.
Arche's face was now flushed red. Her eyes were brimming with rage, and her teeth were gritting so hard they could actually be heard scrapping each other.
"What... have... you... DONE!?"
Arche asked the question with her breath running short. She couldn't believe that these two monsters had sold their own children for money. What she had heard from James was that her sisters were handed over for adoption, or so he had been told. However, James believed that it had been just a cover story, and they actually had been sold away.
After a brief moment of silence, the male couple, Sir Furt, began speaking.
"We have done what? It's not good manners to barge in and-"
"CUT THE CRAP! WHERE ARE MY SISTERS!?"
The couple were both startled by Arche's loud shout, and her rage-filled face didn't make the situation any better. It took a few more seconds until Sir Furt began answering.
"S-Someone requested to adopt Ureirika and Kuuderika so his child can have playmates!"
"...I don't believe it. You have... sold them away... DIDN'T YOU!?"
Arche was gritting her teeth so hard that blood was starting to leak from the sides of her mouth. Tears were leaking from her reddened raging and sorrowful eyes. Her facial appearance was, to put it simply, unsightly...
"Sold them away? Who told you that?"
Madame Furt asked, but it could be noticed that her eyes sometimes glanced over to the ornate box on the table. Arche noticed that and quickly picked the box up. Upon opening, she found out that the box was filled to the brim with platinum coins. At a glance, one could assume that there were at least 40 or 50 coins there.
"What is this...?"
The couple were both speechless.
"If you didn't sell my sisters, then what is this money!?"
"It was... It was... compensation from the adopter"
CRASH!
Arche slammed the box to the floor. The impact didn't break the box, but most of the coins inside were scattered all over.
"What's the difference from selling them away, then!?"
Despite the question, Arche no longer want to hear anything more from the two monsters she used to call her "parents". They had easily sold their children away for coin, and that was already beyond the last straw for her.
Out of pure rage, Arche pointed her staff at the Furt couple.
"Aaaaaaargh!"
[Maximize Magic-
But suddenly, a hand grabbed her wrist from the side, breaking her focus from casting her spell.
"Stop it, Arche. It's not worth it. Your sisters still need you, but you can't help them if you call the city guard down on you."
It was Roberdyck who had stopped her, and before Arche could say anything, he wrapped her in a strong embrace with his right arm. It took just a few seconds until Arche began crying out into his chest. While this was happening, Roberdyck levied a death glare towards the Furt couple, and it was effective in preventing them from saying anything, the fear now clear in their eyes.
A minute later, Arche finally calmed down enough not to fill the room with her sobs. While her face was still sunk in Roberdyck's chest, he began speaking towards the Furt couple while still fully sporting his death glare.
"I can never condone what you've done. However, if you tell me who the so-called 'adopter' is, both of us will leave, and you can expect to never see us again in the foreseeable future. So, what is your decision?"
Sir Furt gulped, and he took one of the paper documents.
"Here, the name of the adopter is written on this paper! Does that satisfy you!?"
Arche's former father handed a piece of paper to Roberdyck, who took it in a quick, rude manner. While still having Arche in his embrace, he skimmed over it, and his eyes quickly went wide upon reading one part. His hand crumpled it into his fist as he spoke in a grim tone.
"Yes... Let's go, Arche"
"Yeah! Go away with your commoner friends and never set foot here again! Don't come begging when later we get back to glory!"
"...I pray to the Gods, that what you have done will never be forgotten..."
Without saying anything more, Roberdyck and Arche left the room, with Roberdyck pulling Arche who followed reluctantly. No words were said to James, whom they came across on the way to the front door and just watched with grieving face.
None of the two said anything to the other as they walked away from Furt Residence. Roberdyck kept holding Arche's hand while gently pulling her to walk with him.
"...I knew my parents are not the best parents out there, but I have never expected them to fall that low..."
"Let's put that aside for now, and go get your sisters. We will buy them out with all we have, or we take them by force if need be"
Roberdyck spoke with his eyebrows raised and eyes narrowed, a clear sign of determination. Arche couldn't help feeling a sense of disbelief hearing what he had just said.
"Rober, why are you going so far? You could have just-"
"By the heavens, no way I will sit out of this! Your sisters, even though I have never meet them, deserve better than being sold away to a stranger!"
Arche was startled hearing Roberdyck. She had never seen him being this angry, but she knew that Roberdyck liked children, so perhaps it had been the paternal instinct he had developed over time.
"Thank you, Rober..."
"Don't thank me yet. The person we're going to visit is... not a stranger to us"
"Who is it?"
"The rich former noble whom we all have met not too long ago..."
Arche's eyes went wide with her mouth agape hearing what Roberdyck had just said. The hint was very obvious that the one who had bought her sisters was none other than Rossaur Ratenoir.
[X][X][X]
"So, what do you want from me?"
Arche and Roberdyck were seated in the guest room of Rossaur Ratenoir's mansion, and the man in question was sitting across them on his lavish private seat. His question was spoken not in his usual loud and heavy tone like back then, and that for some reason made both of them feel uneasy. To begin with, they had not expected to be let in this easily and meet the man himself to boot.
However, both of them knew that they had to keep themselves alert, especially that they had not seen any of Arche's sisters yet. Regardless, Arche mustered up her courage and began speaking.
"I-I heard that you adopted my sisters..."
"Yes, that's right"
Arche was surprised hearing Rossaur's straight answer, and the same applied to Roberdyck. Not giving a chance for either of them to respond, he continued.
"I have known for a long time that the Furt household has been accumulating debts, which I assume you have been working so hard to pay off. With how both of your parents have been buying expensive items without a care, I knew that it was just a matter of time until they have to sell themselves along with their children to pay off the debts. Let's just say that... I didn't want that to happen to your sisters"
Arche had a very hard time believing what Rossaur had just said. Even though he was a very rich merchant now, there was no reason for him to shell out that amount of money just out of good will. Rossaur himself seemed to notice both Arche and Roberdyck gazing into space, cracking a small smile with narrowed eyes.
"Hmph, as expected. Both of you are having difficulties believing me. Now listen!"
Rossaur leaned forward with his elbows resting on his legs, which was usually a sign that someone was about to talk more seriously than before.
"Just several days ago, I went to visit your house looking for you. You weren't there, so instead I had a conversation with your parents. It was... unpleasant to say the least. In any case, I noticed that your sisters and Emerile seemed to get along well, and so we got to this point. Now, before you ask, I was looking for you because you were my easiest link to your team"
"Uhh... Why were you looking for us?"
"I just wanted to tell you the good news that..."
Rossaur's facial expression transitioned into a warm smile at this point. The expression was so far different from his usual self that seeing it felt a little weird. But it was apparent that he was genuinely happy.
"Fluder has somehow made a breakthrough on his research. Emerile is now fully healthy, and she will live and grow like any other child"
Both Arche and Roberdyck had their eyes going wide, and their mouth went into a big smile without them being able to hold it.
"C-Congratulations, Sir Rossaur!"
"Yes! Congratulations! I'm so happy for you!"
"Heh, thanks"
Rossaur quickly wiped his moustache with his finger once, even though there was nothing to wipe off. Perhaps it was a habit or such, but there was no reason to inquire about it.
"My point is, it was all thanks to your team that now she can live a happy life without being under the shadows of Piethoms. The money I gave you back then was nowhere near enough to repay your team's deed, so I wanted to do something more for you, all of you"
"But... where are my sisters?"
"They have been living here since yesterday. This morning I went to your house for the last time to finish every legal documents, and I am now officially their foster father. If you want to see them..."
Rossaur then took a small bell which had been sitting nearby and rang it. Immediately, the door was opened by the butler both Arche and Roberdyck were already familiar with; Lavitz.
"How can I serve you, Master?"
"Bring the kids here, but only if they are awake. Otherwise, just return here and let me know"
"Certainly, Master"
Lavitz bowed and quickly left with the door left open. Two minutes later, he returned just by himself.
"I regret to inform you that the young masters are all asleep"
"I see. Then we better see them ourselves"
Rossaur stood up from his seat as he spoke. He then made a hand gesture for Roberdyck and Arche to come along, and they complied. On the way to the room where the children were asleep, Rossaur began speaking to Arche.
"Hey, you're a magic caster, right? Do you have a spell to reduce noise or such?"
"I do have one, but... we won't be able to hear each other speaking"
"Good enough. Hand gestures will suffice. Don't want to accidentally wake them up"
Arche nodded, understanding Rossaur's intention. Soon, they arrived at the supposed room where Emerile and the twins were sleeping. Before opening the door, Arche focused her mind and casted a spell.
[Silence]
After making sure that the spell worked, Rossaur opened the door slowly and stopped just enough for everyone to peek in. With a hand gesture, he prompted Arche and Roberdyck to look inside, and they slowly inserted their head into the room.
What they soon saw was an adorable scene of three girls sleeping peacefully, cuddling each other on one bed. Both Arche and Roberdyck couldn't help smiling at the view, and for some reason Arche felt as if a very huge burden had been shed from her. Her sisters were all right, and they just got a new friend.
Later, all three of them had returned to the guest room and sat on their respective seats. Unlike before, both Arche and Roberdyck now seemed very relaxed and relieved after knowing that the twins were really all right.
"Now, do you believe me?"
"Uh, y-yes! I'm sorry for doubting you!"
"Ah, me too! I apologize for our rudeness!"
Arche and Roberdyck bowed as they spoke, and Rossaur just laughed slightly seeing that.
"It is fine! Anyway, what is your plan after this?"
Arche was slightly surprised hearing that question. Now that she was reminded, she became aware that the recent event had made her plan obsolete. Now she had no idea what to do next.
"I... don't know. At first I planned to take my sisters away from that house and live by ourselves, but now that they are in your good care, I don't know yet..."
"I see. How about living here, then?"
"E-eh? What...?"
Arche couldn't believe what she had just heard, and the same applied to Roberdyck. They both were speechless with their mouths agape.
"Become part of this household along with your sisters. Though I'm not going to adopt you since you are already an independent, self-sufficient adult in my eyes. That way you can live together with your sisters and..."
Rossaur glanced at Roberdyck briefly before he spoke again.
"You may once again pursue a career you wanted before having to become a Worker"
Arche was silent hearing the offer. Indeed, she had dropped out from Imperial Magic Academy because of her circumstances. With how the situation had changed, she now had a chance to resume her education there. This was a very promising offer, but...
"Take it, Arche. This is your chance of a lifetime"
Before Arche could contemplate any further, Roberdyck suddenly encouraged her to take the offer.
"But... you and the others..."
"Hey, our team is already disbanded by now. That was our plan, right? To separate and go our own ways after completing that job. This is your way, Arche. Don't hesitate and end up regretting it later"
Roberdyck spoke with confident tone and grinning face, and Rossaur just smiled watching the interaction between the two.
Later, Arche and Roberdyck were at the front gate of Rossaur's mansion. Arche had decided to take up the offer and live there from now on. As for Roberdyck, he was about to leave.
"So... yeah. I'm taking my leave"
"What are your plans after this?"
"Eh, for now I will go back to that village to tell those two about this. After that, who knows. Maybe I'll run an orphanage myself, or work as a healer"
"Uhh, Rober... Could you tell them that I'm sorry...?"
"Huh? For what?"
"I feel bad that suddenly everything got handed over to me, while-"
"No, no. Stop it right there, Arche. You once said it yourself about your Talent, that people would see it as unfair but you'd just live your life with the gift you had. Why now you have to feel bad?"
"That's different, Rober. I never could choose to have a Talent, but this..."
Roberdyck suddenly put his hands on Arche's shoulders. His grip was gentle, but it surprised her still.
"You have been through a lot more than the rest of us, Arche. You deserve a much better life, and now you have earned it. There's nothing to feel bad for"
"Rober..."
"Arche, you're now free from the burden you have been carrying. Live with your sisters, pursue the career you wanted, do anything you want. I will be cheering you from far away"
Without saying anything, Arche hugged Roberdyck, who embraced her gently in return.
"I'm gonna miss you, and the others too"
"We all will, Arche"
With a final hand waving, Roberdyck walked away and left. Arche stood still for a while until Roberdyck finally disappeared from view. Right now, she still couldn't believe how her life had drastically changed within a single day, and she felt that she would need some time to let everything sink in. But her life had changed for the better, and she was thankful for everyone who had made this happen.
[X][X][X]
"Demiurge"
"Yes, Ainz-sama. How may I serve you?"
"What is this report about granting a translated copy of [Homunculus Codex] to Baharuth Empire?"
"If you allow me, Ainz-sama, I will take a look"
Ainz handed the piece of paper he had just come across among the pile of reports to Demiurge, who then read it intently while adjusting his glasses. It only took him less than a minute until he began speaking.
"Ah, I see. This was a request made by Fluder Paradyne, the Court Wizard of the Empire. It was apparent that, at the time we had contact with him, he was stuck on some research regarding a Homunculus, and so he requested knowledge about it out of desperation."
"Hmm, alright"
"Was it a foolish decision to grant him the codex, Ainz-sama? Though I believed his research would bring no disadvantage to us, granting him the codex would have firmly secured his allegiance with us. But perhaps Ainz-sama sees something fatal which I missed? In that case, I am ready for any punishment Ainz-sama wishes to befall on me."
What's with that unnecessarily long speech?
"No, I agree with your thinking. Moreover, a Homunculus is just as weak as any ordinary human. There is no foreseeable risk in him knowing a thing or two about Homunculus"
"I'm glad to hear that, Ainz-sama"
"Anyway, now that some time has passed, I should call Nigredo over to watch if Ryu's group will need extraction soon"
"I shall call her over for you, Ainz-sama"
"Hmm.."
Ainz nodded, and Demiurge stood up from his seat and left the office. Ainz then resumed going through the pile of reports on his work table.
I sure hope they will find some good information.

Afterword:
So, it seems reinforcement for Ryu will come in less than a month thanks to Xiera's effort. In another news, Arche finally got a closure after all she has been through. Maybe her ending here is too idealistically happy compared to her canon fate, but I'm certain that she deserved better.
See you again in the next chapter.
