Chapter 1- september:

Ethans POV :

I stumble out of bed as the ringing sound of the alarm pierces my ears, I resist the urge to just throw it out the window and go back to sleep.

I mentally scold myself, "No stop it, today is the first day of school".

Ok, maybe the first day of school wouldn't be a complete nightmare... I'll admit that I am eager for my first day of school. I'd been away during the whole summer vacation and it has been a while since I spoke to my friends; not to mention I'm entering grade 7.

"yeah that ought to be fun"

"shut up", I mentally replied, rather half-heartedly.

Line break

Right as I enter the school corridor I heard someone call me.

"ETHAN!"

Grinning, I turn around, "hey, Joshua"

"long time no see..."

He pulls me into a bone crunching hug, which isn't too surprising given his stocky build.

"yeah, great to see you too"

I glance behind him and wave as I caught sight of Liam, who is casually making his way toward us. I mentally remind myself not to hug Liam, he didn't appreciate them and would, without hesitation, sock anyone who even touched him.

Harper and Celeste are trailing behind him, arms linked, laughing among themselves; I envy their ability to be so careless. It was as if they were in their own bubble, they don't concern themselves with what others say about them, according to them it isn't any of their business. This is expected of harper, her fiery and harsh personality match her looks. Her black, choppy hair and olive complexion contrasts with her vivid hazel-almost orange- eyes. Celeste on the other hand, while timid in nature, reflects Harpers beliefs and struts beside her. Her blond pigtails bouncing along with her and her blue eyes sparkle with life. I realize that the difference is that the new celeste radiates confidence, it seems to shine right through her clothes.

Joshua, who is beside me, seems shorter than last year. Oh, I guess I grew taller, I realize with a glowing sense of pride. He's built sturdily and is slightly shorter than me; he has warm features. Tan skin, sandy hair, warm brown eyes and a kind smile; he cast an aura of kindness and warmth. His light and goofy sense of humor is his best feature and he never has any difficulty making friends, people are drawn to him like moths to a flame.

"hey!", Harpers yell snapps me back to reality.

"get your head out of the clouds", she chides.

I rolled my eyes.

Right, I almost forgotten about that, I've been so distracted by everything else. I quickly dig through my bag and rip out the schedule.

Turns out most of us are together during the lessons, more or less. Well, except math. I am all alone for that. I sigh internally at the thought of being separated from friends and thrown into a random class with a bunch of people I barely know.

After spending the rest of home room laughing at lame jokes and inappropriate innuendoes, I walk to my chemistry class with Liam and Celeste.

Liam is, to put it bluntly, boring. He speaks sparingly, as if he's going to lose his words if he says them out loud. He puts up this stupid pretense of an intimidating character, when in reality I know he wouldn't stand a chance against anyone. He doesn't excel in a single thing, he is the quiet kid at the back of the class. He doesn't even play any sport, I huff at the idea of him beating anyone up. Everything about him screams average; his academics, his messy brown hair, pale skin and black eyes. He usually just blends into the background.

Just my luck to have a lesson with him and Celeste. She isn't boring or anything... she was just too... positive. She's always spewing random positive quotes , sometimes I wonder if she does it to just irk me.

Line break

The rest of chemistry went by in a blur.

This year is going to be harder than last. I have to get the best grade, I can not afford to slip up; I doubt my parents would react well to my failure. Math's one of my best subjects, maybe it's best that my friends aren't with me in this class. I don't say it out loud but I do get the best grades among them, and math is a hard subject; I don't want them to hinder my progress.

As soon as I entered the room the over powering smell of sweat hit me, I tried not to breathe through my nose and I sit in the second row; I wanted to be able to hear the teacher without being right at the front where they can see everything you do. I shift in my chair uncomfortably and looked around the room. That's when something caught my attention.

Sitting right next to me, buried into her book, is a girl. Something about her looks familiar, I couldn't place where she was from. Her honey blonde hair, which is tied up into a pony tail, cascades over her shoulder and a few lose strands frame her face. She was wearing a casual blue t-shirt and shorts with casual white sneakers. As I was trying to catch a better look at her face, her back stiffened and she turned around to look at me.

My lips part in evident shock. Her calculating grey eyes were starring right into mine. I was correct, I do recognize her.

"Annabeth?"
