Official story disclaimer

The characters of Lieutenant Commander Steven 'Steve' McGarrett, Special Agent Doris McGarrett, Lieutenant Catherine 'Cath' Rollins and John McGarrett do not belong to me in any shape or form. I am merely using them for my own entertainment purposes.

The character of Danielle 'Danni / Elle' Williams could probably be considered mine by now. Although the character was originally based on male Danny Williams, I think it's probably safe to say that she has become her own character. She has her own story to tell and her own individual background which differ from that on the show.

This also means that Grace is different than she is in the show as well; not only because she lives full time with her mother but also because Danni and her ex Duncan have a civil relationship with one another. Please note as well that Grace's surname in this universe where she is Danni's daughter is Taylor as Williams is Danni's maiden name while Taylor was her married name.

The character of Emily 'Emmy' McGarrett, Lily Williams and Robert 'Bobby' Williams do belong to me however as does any character who you don't recognise straight away so please don't use them without permission.

Chapter Two

We just want to talk

Steve McGarrett's eyes narrowed as his gaze landing on the two women standing at his front door, two women who he would recognise from anywhere just from the way they both held themselves.

Two women who he had foolishly hoped would respect his wishes and stay away from him and his new family until they were properly settled in together and had established a routine. Clearly he had wrong, something he should have realised given the streak of selfishness in them both.

He breathed out nosily, trying to ride out the wave of rage which crashed over him at their intrusion to his home, even as he wondered how they would know they would be there, was it a lucky guess or had someone actually told them. He relied on his training to keep his face expressionless, not wanting to alert his two little girls that there was something wrong, knowing that it would upset them if they realised he was angry, especially Emily who was a little sponge when it came to his and Danni's emotions.

He reached forward to the dashboard and pressed the button which released the trunk with a click before he turned the key in the ignition, killing the engine.

"Who are those two women who Mamma is talking to?" Grace asked, breaking the silence in the car. Steve glanced towards her noting the curious look on her face as she tilted her head to the side, her legs swinging to and fro, the very picture of innocence and happiness. He could remember seeing the same look once on his sister's face when she was younger, before Doris's lies corrupted their family causing it to disintegrate.

He wouldn't allow it to happen again, not to his family, he would do whatever it took to keep that innocence which Grace had intact for as long as possible.

"No one important Gracie." He told her now, aware that she was waiting for an answer from him. "We've got to get the food into the kitchen though, are you going to be okay taking one of the bags in and putting it down on the side so that your Mamma can put it away, we don't have much so it won't take long." He said forcing a grin on his face, thankful when she grinned back at him and nodded.

"That's because everything we need is at home Steve." Grace pointed out serenely.

"That we do." He agreed, thinking back to the stocked fridge and freezer at Danni's place.

"Could you do me a favour once you've put the bag into the kitchen Gracie, could you take your sister and go up to your room for the time being? Your Mamma and I need to speak to Doris and Catherine about something." He told her.

She stared at him for a moment, her green eyes, the same colour as her father's, widening for a moment before they narrowed as she looked towards the door, staring ahead through the window screen with a frown. He remained quiet, unsure of what was going through her mind, waiting until she turned back to look at him, a wise expression in her eyes which he was more used to seeing in Danni's eyes.

"You need to talk to them about private grown up stuff?" She queried, sighing when he nodded at her in response.

"Yeah, private grown up stuff Gracie." He confirmed with a nod. "I'll follow you in a second with Emily, I need you to look after her until either I or your Mamma comes to get you both okay? Can you do that for me?" He pressed, keeping his voice as light as possible. The less his mother and ex saw of his children, the better in his eyes.

Grace stared at him again, her eyes glancing towards his hands, the same frown from before coming back to her face causing him to follow her gaze to see that his hands were gripping the steering wheel again with enough pressure that his knuckles had whitened, he forced himself to ease his grip, smiling at her when she looked back at him. She looked worried before she nodded at him.

"I can look after Emmy, Steve." She answered him, giving him a nod.

"That's my girl" He said, watching as she undid her seatbelt and turned from him, pushing open the passenger door and climbed out, closing the door behind her and heading to the back of the car. Steve instantly followed her, his eyes narrowing as he took in the scene at the door before he turned and headed to the back of the car, opening the door and unstrapping the car seat that Emily was in. He closed it, taking a moment to grab the last bag from the trunk before locking the car and heading up the path, thankful that Emily was fast asleep in the carrier.

He watched as Grace slipped past both Doris and Catherine, ignoring them both, her attention fixed on her mother, who was looking down at her with a warm, loving smile. A smile, which Steve knew from personal experience always made the person who received it feel as though they could deal with anything because Danni would be there supporting them.

He listened in as he approached, hearing Danni speak.

"Hey, welcome home my Gracie Bean, could you take the bag through to the kitchen please. The oven is on so make sure you don't brush up against it, I don't want you to get hurt." Danni told her, leaning down and kissing Grace on her cheek.

"Okay Mamma." She replied before she headed down the passage way towards the kitchen.

He breathed out a silent sigh of relief that Grace was out of the way as he stepped into his house, interrupting his mother when she started trying to speak to him.

"You can wait, I'll be back to deal with you in a moment." He told them brusquely, stopping beside Danni and looking down at her. "Hey, my Danno, we're back as promised." He said, a smile breaking through his SEAL mask for a second, unable to resist the urge to kiss her before he straightened and headed into the kitchen, placing the bag next to the one which Grace had already placed on the side. "You okay?" He asked the small girl who was standing by the door.

"Yeah, I'm okay." She assured him, nibbling at her lower lip, he was tempted to press her but he held back. His relationship with his future step daughter was a lot better than it had been but he didn't want to rock the boat too much.

"Can you take Emily, will the seat be too heavy for you to carry?" He asked her, holding out the car seat to her, smiling when she took it from him with both hands.

"I've got this." She assured him, her chin coming up in a stubborn tilt. Her hair and eye colour may have come from her father but everything else was definitely her mother including her various expressions.

"I know you have, Emily should remain asleep for the time being but if she wakes up then we'll hear and come and get her, I'm sure she'll be fine though because she loves being with you." He told her, his heart softening when she beamed happily at him at the remark, there was no doubt in his mind that Grace loved her baby sister. "Okay, head upstairs now."

"Okay Steve." She replied, turning and heading out of the room, Steve following behind her. He watched as she carefully made her way up the stairs with Emily before he moved to the front door.

"Doris, Catherine, what are you both doing here?" He demanded coolly.

"Why do you think I'm here Steven? I came here so that we can talk to each other and try and sort out this terrible misunderstanding between us. We need to put it in the past where it belongs and move on." Doris told him in a brisk manner.

"And what about you Catherine, what brings you to mine and Danni's home uninvited?" Steve asked, his eyes flickering over to his ex, briefly before he looked back at her mother as she began to speak, interrupting Catherine before she even had a chance to respond to his question.

"I asked Catherine to come here with me to see you because I thought that since you love each other you'd feel more comfortable if she was here when we spoke. Not only that but thanksgiving is in a couple of day time and we should spend it together as a family. All I want is the chance to talk to you Steve and to see my granddaughter. I'm assuming that was her asleep in the car seat? She's beautiful Steve, a McGarrett through and through." She told him, a proud tone to her voice. His eyes narrowed, noticing that she was trying to cut Danni out of the conversation now that her had arrived.

"Firstly I'm already having thanksgiving with my family and secondly, I hope that my daughter is nothing like a McGarrett considering our current track record of lies and deceit. She'll take after Danni, the same way she looks like Danni minus her hair colour." Steve told her before he looked at Catherine again, fixing her with a pitying look which made the brunette squirm beneath it, clearly not used to seeing that look being directed at her from him. He was aware that Danni was standing quietly beside him, clearly content on letting him take the lead with the conversation while offering her silent support.

"Steve, I…" Catherine began to say, her words trailing off when Steve spoke over her, not willing to listen to her excuses.

"Catherine, I thought that you and I had come to a mutual understanding with one another that what we once shared was dead and buried and it had been that way for a while, even before I came to Hawaii and met Danni. We were both clinging onto something because it was easy and it suited us both at that time in our lives when we were just looking for fun."

"We were." Catherine said quietly.

"I want us to remain friends Cath, you're a link to my past and therefore you'll always be important to me but I'm not in love with you and you aren't in love with me and I think you know that. You know from our various conversations that I am head over heels in love with Danni, I'm building a life with her, I want her to be my wife and Emily to be the first of our children together. There is nothing which will break or trump what I feel for her and I'm sorry if you for some reason, suddenly thought that wasn't the case, but it is." He told her bluntly, reaching back and tangling his fingers with Danni's, squeezing down on them. "And Doris." He continued, turning to his mother again. "I'm not sure what game you're trying to play here or what you thought you would gain by bringing Catherine here but whatever it is you've failed already. Whatever you're planning isn't going to work, not today, not any day." He told her, glancing to the side of her when Danni took a step forward.

"Why would you do this to your own son, this isn't the way a family or an Ohana would behave. Family don't play one against the others or try and play mind games. They accept what is happening even if they don't agree with it, perhaps you should learn that lesson, it will save on a lot of pain in the future." Danni chimed in quietly.

"I'm not here to play mind games or to cause troubles though I get that maybe it doesn't come across that way." Catherine told Danni before she turned back at Steve.

"So why are you here then?" Steve demanded with a raised eyebrow.

"Your Mother rang and said that she wanted to talk to you and to answer any questions you might have and I know that you've wanted some of these answers for so long and now is your chance to get there. I came because I thought you might need a friend with you." Catherine commented, meeting his eyes directly before she glanced over her shoulder. "Could we come in? I doubt that you want your neighbours to overhear this conversation."

Steve turned and looked at Danni, sharing a long speaking look with Danni which ended up with her nodding slightly at him, her grey eyes softening into a loving look. The familiar cry of their daughter erupting from the upstairs attracting both of their attention, letting them know that Emily was awake.

"I'll go and check on her and re-join you in a minute." She murmured to him, squeezing down on her hand before she raised her voice to her normal level of speaking. "Steve, why don't you take let them sit down, I won't be long and Catherine was right, it's probably better if this conversation was had indoors rather than outside on the doorstep."

"Of course Ku'u Lei." He responded, leaning down and brushing a kiss over the top of her head before he reluctantly let go of her hand, letting her turn and head up to the stairs towards the spare room which Grace used when they stayed in the house. Once he heard the door close he took a step back, finally allowing the two woman in front of him to step into the house, aware of his mother looking around her while Catherine merely headed over to the couch and lowered herself down on it, her hands clasped in front of her.

He moved over, taking the single chair and watched as his mother took the space beside Catherine. She spoke, her eyes landing on him, a displeased look on her face.

"I don't see what the problem is when it comes to us spending thanksgiving together, I'm your mother so I should be allowed to join your family feast." She stated, Steve raised an eyebrow.

"We're going to wait until my fiancé returns before we start speaking about anything. You'll have to wait before you say your piece." He told he, his eyes flickering over to Catherine taking in the concerned look on her face, she had clearly realising she was in a bad situation and had been lied to. "Cath, do you want a drink? We don't have much but there's some juice, some ice tea and the usual hot drinks or water?" He offered, feeling pity for her.

"I'd love some ice tea if you have any, if not then just a glass of water would be good." She said.

"Sure" He replied as he came back to his feet and headed out of the room and into the study, closing the door behind him. He stared out of the window blankly for a moment before he shook his head and moved towards the kitchen to get Catherine her drink.

One thought in his mind.

The sooner they spoke, the sooner we could throw them out of his and Danni's home and hopefully never have them darken his doorstep again.
