Be careful what you wish for

Official story disclaimer

The characters of Lieutenant Commander Steven 'Steve' McGarrett, Special Agent Doris McGarrett, Lieutenant Catherine 'Cath' Rollins and John McGarrett do not belong to me in any shape or form. I am merely using them for my own entertainment purposes.

The character of Danielle 'Danni / Elle' Williams could probably be considered mine by now. Although the character was originally based on male Danny Williams, I think it's probably safe to say that she has become her own character. She has her own story to tell and her own individual background which differ from that on the show.

This also means that Grace is different than she is in the show as well; not only because she lives full time with her mother but also because Danni and her ex Duncan have a civil relationship with one another. Please note as well that Grace's surname in this universe where she is Danni's daughter is Taylor as Williams is Danni's maiden name while Taylor was her married name.

The character of Emily 'Emmy' McGarrett, Lily Williams and Robert 'Bobby' Williams do belong to me however as does any character who you don't recognise straight away so please don't use them without permission.

Chapter Three

Things heat up

Steve pulled open the fridge and peered inside, his eyes landing on the jug of freshly made ice tea which he knew Danni had made up the night before for them to drink during that day. It was already the Sunday so they would be leaving that evening to head back to the main house, which meant that it would have to be used up or they would have to bring it with them somehow.

He closed his eyes, shaking his head slightly, realising that his mind was trying to grasp onto mundane topics to stop himself from thinking about what was about to happen. Whatever it was his mother wanted to talk about, he knew he wouldn't want to hear it.

He took the jug out and closed the door before he placed it on the side, his eyes flickering over to the kitchen door when it opened and Danni stepped in, closing it behind her.

"How's Emily?" He asked her, noticing with a sense of relief that Danni was empty handed still.

"She's fine, I changed her nappy for her, she'll need feeding soon so whatever this is about with your mother we'll have to get it done quickly. I don't want to leave you alone with her." Danni admitted with a shrug.

"Just my mother? Not Catherine?" Steve couldn't help but remark.

"You mother is the one with the plan, I think that on this occasion Catherine believed her when she said that you would need her. She's still your friend and you have a history together, it's completely natural to assume that if she was on shore leave and free that she would come to make sure you're okay. I think as well, she's realising that Doris brought her here under false pretences." Danni told him as she moved to his side, wrapping her arms around his waist and hugging him.

"I think that's what happened as well." Steve admitted, dropping his arm around her shoulder as he reached up and opened one of the cupboards, picking out a glass from within. "I just don't know what Doris is up to, she's got a plan, that's much is for sure but I don't know what it is."

"Doris always has a plan it seems." Danni replied with a shrug. "Whatever it is though, I'll be with you in there. We'll deal with whatever she throws at us together, the same way that we always do."

"Have I told you that I love you today?" He asked her, his mouth quirking up into a smile as he leaned down and kissed her, savouring the moment before he pulled back with a sigh. "I'm glad that you're here with me. Was Grace okay? She seemed worried earlier on."

"She's fine Sweetheart, she's just worried because she knows that Doris is bad news, she's happy in her room with Emmy. She's keeping her entertained while Emmy is doing her thousand yard which for the record she has most definitely inherited from you, not from me." Danni said, a teasing note coming to her voice.

"I'm not too sure about that, you clearly haven't seen your own icy stare before." Steve replied back with a grin, kissing her again before he poured the ice tea into the glass and put the jug back into the fridge to keep chilled. "Come on, lets go and get this over and done with" He said, waiting only until she nodded at him before he picked up the glass and left the kitchen, Danni by his side, the two of them walking back into the living room. Steve passed Catherine the glass before retook his seat, glad when Danni immediately perched herself on the arm of it.

"Where is my iced tea?" Doris demanded, her gaze on the glass which Catherine was sipping from. "I didn't raise you not to have manners Steven."

"You barely raised me at all." Steve countered coolly. "You said you were here to talk because you wanted to try and mend some bridges, well start talking because this is your only chance for it."

"Steve, there is really no need for this aggressive attitude from you, I expect it from Mary because she's not like us but you should understand why I made the decision I did when I was younger. Wo Fat was beginning to zero in on me and I had to leave to make sure that you were safe. The men who he sent after me wouldn't have hesitated for an instant to use you and Mary as bait to flush me out. I couldn't risk it happening. You're a father yourself now, is there anything you wouldn't do if it meant keeping your daughter safe from harm?" She demanded. "No sacrifice you wouldn't make?"

Steve remained silent for a moment before he looked at Danni when she spoke up, a cold tone to her voice which he wasn't used to hearing in their home.

"I'm sorry, are you trying to tell Steve that the reason you abandoned him and Mary was because you were trying to protect them as their mother?" She asked. "That's a bunch of bullshit and you know it, the reason you left was because you wanted to save your own skin, it had nothing to do with your husband or your kids because if it had been then you would have found a way to warn John about it so he could take measures to keep his family safe. Instead you faked your own death, gave them no warning of the danger you left them in, you left your family grieving and thinking you were dead without a look back. Did it ever occur to you that if Wo Fat even had the slightest idea that you were still alive then he would have come immediately for John and the kids or had you already stopped caring about them because by that point you were safe in Japan, hiding."

"How dare…" Doris began to say, stopping when Danni spoke over her, her words rapid and filled with anger.

"How dare I? I dare because I am Steve's fiancé and I'm a mother and knowing what you did leaves me disgusted. The fact that you come back to Hawaii now because it's convenient for you to return and just expect Steve and Mary to tell you everything is fine and to accept you back with open arms while telling you everything is forgiven? You must be delusional. Have you even been to see Mary since being back this time around or does she not fit into your new plan so she doesn't matter to you, somehow I think I already know the answer. You might call yourself a mother, but you aren't one." Danni stated with a shake of her head, her hand falling onto Steve's, squeezing down on it.

Steve knew that Danni was right, whatever reason Doris had come back to Hawaii for, it wasn't to mend bridges, she was only going through the motions because she thought it was what he wanted to hear and would soften him up to her own demands.

"So let me get this straight." Catherine said, placing her glass carefully on the coaster on the coffee table, her voice attracting everyone's attention here. "When you said that you wanted me here to support Steve, it was a lie, you brought me here because why?"

"I brought you here because…" Doris began to say, a flash of bad temper coming across her face when Catherine interrupted her.

"Actually, no, I don't want to know. I should have learned from the last time that you were probably lying but I wanted to see Steve and make sure that he was okay and it's beyond clear to me that he is fine. He'd probably be a lot better if we weren't here." She said with a shake of her head before she sighed, bringing her hand up to her nose and pinched the bridge of her nose for a moment before she dropped it. "I'm sorry" she went onto say, her dark eyes flickering between Steve and Danni. "Your mother indicated that you needed me and that you had feelings for me still that you needed to talk through with me before you could move fully on with Danni. I thought, stupidly, that by coming here I would actually help you. She also indicated that you wanted to spend Thanksgiving together for old times' sake."

Steve growled, his hand tightening on Danni when she made a sound at the back of her throat.

"I'm sorry you've been dragged into this Catherine but it appears that Doris did was she does best and lied to you about the situation. Steve and I are stronger than ever." She told the brunette before she turned her attention back to her future mother in law. "I genuinely feel sorry for you that your mind has been so warped by the life you lead. You had a family, you had a husband who loved you and kids who adored you and you threw it away for your career. But the fact that I pity you doesn't change the fact that you are here trying to mess up your son's life. Subtly doesn't seem to work on you so let me say this in plain language to you that even you can understand. Steve and I love each other, we work well together and we understand one another. We are getting married and we have a family together which will only continue to grow. Our family does not include you anymore. I assume you telling Catherine that Steve was conflicted and had feelings for her still was your way of showing your displeasure and the fact that you don't approve of me? Well news flash for you, I don't approve of you as either a mother or a human being so I guess that makes us equal in one thing." Danni told her.

"She's right." Steve said with a nod. "Our family doesn't include you anymore."

"Steven I know you." Doris said, her hazel eyes blazing with rage as she glared at Danni for a moment before turning to look at Steve, the small action making him want to shake his head as she showed yet again, that she couldn't read people since she was clearly still dismissing Danni as unimportant. He had no doubt in his mind that Doris believed that he was better suited with Catherine simply due to the fact they were both Navy and she could use them. She had taken one look at Danni, at her lack of height and her delicate looks and decided that she wasn't cut out to be his wife. It just showed to him just how much of a fool she was, if she couldn't see past Danni's beautiful face to see the strength and the backbone of steel behind it. "You might not believe it but you and I are so alike. You need someone at your side who is like you and you need a job which challenges you both physically and mentally. This job you have at Five-O is beneath you, you should be doing so much more with yourself then you are rather than settling for what is around you. I know-"

"I'm like you?" Steve spat out, hearing the cold rage in his voice which she clearly picked up on if the sudden wary look on Doris's face was an indication for him to go by. "Lets get one thing straight, I'm nothing like you. I don't even know who the hell you are. You think that some pictures and some written reports on what I've been doing gives you the right to claim that you know me? Danni is right, you really are delusional. You go on about the Navy about how it was my biggest accomplishment but the truth is that by the end of my time with them I was burning out. I needed a change, a change which I didn't even realise I needed until I was doing it. You have no idea what we do at Five-O because I doubt you've even bothered to look into the sort of cases which we work in so don't sit there and tell me it doesn't challenge me mentally and physically when you once again have no idea what you're talking about. You're living in a fantasy world which doesn't exist." He commented with a shake of his head.

He tilted his head to the side to look at Danni when she shifted beside him, her face expressionless, hiding her emotions from everyone in the room. The sight of that mask made it clear to Steve that his fiancé was done with the conversation.

"I want you to leave our house Doris. You're not welcome in this home or our other home, you're not welcome in our lives anymore." She told the older woman in a calm voice.

"I'm not leaving anywhere until I've finished talking to my son, a conversation which for the record has nothing to do with you. If anyone should leave then it should be you, this is the McGarrett family home. It's not yours." Doris snapped at her, clearly making no effort to hide her dislike of Danni any further.

"That's it." Steve said. "I'm willing to put up with a lot but not anymore. My Fiancé told you to get out of our house so get out before I call HPD down here and have you arrested for trespassing. As of right now, you're nothing to me. As far I'm concerned the woman who gave birth to me died when I was fifteen years old, you think I need a mother but what you clearly don't realise is that I had one in Aunt Carys and she was a better mother to me then you ever was, even when you were acting at it."

"Steven, I-"

"Let me follow Danni's example and put this bluntly to you since it seems to be the only way of getting anything through your head. You are dead to me, I want nothing to do with you or any plots you have. I don't want to see you or speak to you again. You're not welcome in any of our houses and if I spot you on the property again then you will be arrested even if I have to do it myself. Do everyone a favour and leave Hawaii because there's no place for you here anymore. You're an expert on leaving so it shouldn't be hard to do." Steve remarked as he came up to his feet, Danni rising with him, by his side as she always was, the two of them staring at Doris who seemed frozen to the spot.

Steve's eyes flickered over to Catherine who was staring at them both, her dark eyes wide in shock though she wisely remained silent, clearly recognising that she wasn't involved in this.

"This house is my home Steven, it belongs to me." Doris hissed at him, her hands curling into fists on her thighs.

"I checked the paperwork and this house never belonged to you. It belonged to Dad and came to him from his mother and it came to me from him. Your name isn't linked to it at all so this house is my house." Steve corrected her with a smirk, knowing it would rile her up.

"So this is what it comes down to?" Doris demanded, throwing caution to the wind in her rage. "You get together with this… this little self-righteous bitch, just some lowly Detective who probably only got to the rank of a Detective by sleeping her way to the top and suddenly you're a changed man, is that it? You're not willing to listen to a word I say to you? You allow this… this woman to threaten to throw me out of your home and ban me from coming again and then you decided to agree with her and throw me out of the home which your father and I built together? I bet she is the reason why you won't let me meet my granddaughter or even know her name. Can't you see what has happened here Steven? She's nothing better than a gold digger who trapped you by getting pregnant with your child knowing that you would do the right thing. You should be with someone like Catherine who won't hold you back from reaching the greatness which you were born to reach. You shouldn't be with this whore who doesn't look like she would be able to stand up against a gust of wind, let alone anything else." She finished off scornfully, finally running out of breathe.

A heavy silence followed her words. Steve struggled to breathe for a moment, his rage overwhelming him for a moment aware of Danni standing next to him, still as though she was made from stone.

"I hate you, my Mamma is the best and you're… you're just a mean old witch."

Steve turned automatically towards the voice, his eyes widening when he saw Grace on the stairs, her eyes full of tears as she glared at Doris, clearly having heard everything which the older woman had just said.

"Go back to your room Baby okay? I'll be there in a moment." Danni promised Grace quietly. Grace looked at them and nodded before she looked back at Doris, a look of hate coming to her features which looked out of place on her young face before she turned and clambered back up the stairs, leaving them alone.

"If the paperwork for this house has Steve's name on it then he is well within his rights as the owner to throw you out. The family home you say you built with Steve's father belongs to him now so if he tells you that you have to go then you have to go." Catherine said calmly.

"This doesn't concern…"

"Concern me?" Catherine cut across Doris, raising a dark eyebrow at the furious woman beside her. "You made it my business when you dragged me here under false pretences. As far as Steve and Danni not being a good match? Well that just shows how ignorant you are on the matter because if you had taken the time to do your research before coming here then you would know that they are an amazing match because they cancel out each other weakness while boosting their strengths. Their arrest record should have told you how compatible they are together at work."

"Cath" Steve began to say, stopping when Catherine held her hand at him to stop him from speaking, clearly not finished.

"It's true." She said, her eyes flickering between them for a moment before she sighed. "As for me and Steve being good together, well the truth is that we were never a good match though for a while it was easy to pretend that we were. We were always too much alike in personality and drive to be happy with one another. We never enjoyed each other's company just for the sake of it, it was merely a way to relieve an itch or because we needed something. The only thing either of us truly loved when we were together was our jobs and we both used each other for it. That is not the definition of a good relationship. This." Catherine said, waving her hand towards where Steve and Danni were still standing. "Is the definition of a good relationship and if you aren't able to see that then you're just blind." She told Doris bluntly before her gaze turned apologetic as she looked back at them again. "Please believe me when I say that I didn't come here with any intention of causing problems and I want to make it up to you both, do you remember Billy, Steve?" She asked, the question making Steve frown before he nodded.

"I remember him." He confirmed.

"Well he has a fantastic private group that often work for the government and based on what he's told me about what they tend to do, I think he could help you out in this situation. I'm happy to contact him and let him know what's happening."

There was a moment of silence before Danni, after a glance towards Steve, nodded at the other woman, clearly taking the lead in the conversation, something Steve was thankful for.

He was so furious with his mother that he could barely speak, he squeezed down on Danni's hand when she tangled their fingers together.

"Thanks Catherine, I think we'll be taking you up on that offer to contact him." Danni said calmly, her voice soft and steady though Steve had no doubt that beneath her thoughtful look was a rage burning as brightly as his own. "Steve?" She continued, turning to look at him. "I need to go upstairs and check on the girls, are you going to be okay to deal with things down here?" She queried.

"Leave it with me Danni." He answered her, leaning down and kissing her lightly.

"Okay then." She said, glancing towards Catherine again before she nodded at her and turned, leaving the room and heading up the stairs. The look she shot Steve before she disappeared a clear warning to him, not to do anything stupid while she was gone.

Looking at the woman opposite him, he wasn't sure that it was a warning which he could heed.
