Be careful what you wish for

Official story disclaimer

The characters of Lieutenant Commander Steven 'Steve' McGarrett, Special Agent Doris McGarrett, Lieutenant Catherine 'Cath' Rollins and John McGarrett do not belong to me in any shape or form. I am merely using them for my own entertainment purposes.

The character of Danielle 'Danni / Elle' Williams could probably be considered mine by now. Although the character was originally based on male Danny Williams, I think it's probably safe to say that she has become her own character. She has her own story to tell and her own individual background which differ from that on the show.

This also means that Grace is different than she is in the show as well; not only because she lives full time with her mother but also because Danni and her ex Duncan have a civil relationship with one another. Please note as well that Grace's surname in this universe where she is Danni's daughter is Taylor as Williams is Danni's maiden name while Taylor was her married name.

The character of Emily 'Emmy' McGarrett, Lily Williams and Robert 'Bobby' Williams do belong to me however as does any character who you don't recognise straight away so please don't use them without permission.

I do not have a Beta so please forgive any mistakes which may creep into this story, I always do my best to edit the story and to double check it before uploaded one of my works but sometimes mistakes do creep in, this might also include me accidentally using an English word in place of an American word as my brain, being English, doesn't always pick up on it being incorrect.

The places which I have mentioned are either made up or have been obtained from google including any areas or addresses. One day I hope to go to Hawaii in person but until then I'll have to make so with using my imaginations to build the places in my mind.

Chapter Four

Peace restored

"Good, now we can finally speak properly to one another without any interference" Doris announced the moment Danni was out of sight, her eyes narrowed as she glared towards the stairs making it clear who exactly she considered the interference to be.

Steve ignored her, listening carefully until he heard the sound of the door to Grace's room closing behind his fiancé, thankful that she was there now with the darkhaired girl who would no doubt be in desperate need of some hugs after overhearing Doris's views on Danni.

He breathed out, using every ounce of will power which he possessed to stop himself losing his temper with the woman still sitting on the couch, her hazel eyes now focused on him with a smug look in them which made him want to throttle her.

There was something about Doris which brought out the worst in him, he knew it, just as he knew that he needed to keep that fact to himself. The last thing he wanted was to hand his mother any further knowledge about him, especially as he knew that she would try to exploit any weaknesses he had for her own gain. It wouldn't matter to her that he was her son, all that mattered was that he was an asset in her mind which she could use to achieve her own goals.

"Catherine" Steve said, turning to look at her ex-girlfriend who glanced up at him from her cell phone with a questioning look in her dark eyes.

"Steve?" She queried.

"Would you mind leaving us for the moment?" He asked. "Maybe you could use the kitchen or the study to call Billy on my behalf and set up a meeting with him for me and Danni? The sooner he can fit us in the better." He stated, knowing that Danni would want to be in that meeting with him, not only because she was someone who always liked to know what was going on but because she would want to be there to support him during a conversation that would no doubt be difficult.

"Yeah of course" She said, her eyes flickering between the two of them before she came up to her feet. "I'll be in the study if you need anything and don't worry Steve, I'll explain the situation to Billy and let him know that you want to see him as soon as possible, knowing him he'll move his schedule around so he can see you this week but I'll let you know." She promised, taking a moment to pick up the ice tea Steve had made her before she moved past him and into the study, closing the door quietly behind her and leaving Steve and Doris alone together.

He stared at his mother for a moment, noting that she had made herself more comfortable, a sight which angered him further.

"Did you miss the part where I said you weren't welcome in this house and that I wanted you out of here?." He told her.

"Oh I heard you but I doubt you meant it, I…"

"Oh I meant it." Steve corrected her. "I want you to leave now, don't make this uglier then it has to be."

"Are you threatening me Steven?" She demanded, sitting up straight, her eyes narrowing at him.

"It's not a threat Doris, it's a simple fact. Leave."

"You might think you hold all the cards here but you're not the only one who has powerful friends on speed dial Steven, I have them as well, I can easily pick up my cell and…" Doris stated, stopping when Steve laughed, the sound sharp and brittle as he shook his head at her.

"You don't get it do you? I don't give a shit anymore about what you can and can't do." He stated, meeting her eyes directly and noting the way her eyes widened for a moment as though she was concerned. "You were declared legally dead which means that any rights you think you may have to this house and Dad's property and belongings is long gone and I'm sure that anyone of your powerful friends would tell you the same thing as well if you spoke to them." He told her coldly. "Dad left the house to me and Mary in his will and I bought out Mary's share so the house is legally mine, it is not yours and it hasn't been for a long time. What is it Doris? Did you believe that life where just froze while you were living it up in Japan?" Steve demanded resisting the urge to start pacing or running his hand through his hair.

"Regardless of who the house now belongs to Steven, I'm still your mother." She pointed out.

"And?" Steve countered. "It's funny how you only claim to be my mother when you want something from me. You come into my home, a home I share with my family and you repeatedly insult my fiancé who for the record is the love of my life and the mother of my daughters. You upset me eldest daughter to the point of tears and on top of that you bring Catherine here and try and destroy my friendship with her because it suited you to do so. You're not here to mend any bridges with me, so how about we cut out all the crap and you pretending to care and tell me the real reason why you came here."

He watched her jaw tense as though she was grinding her teeth, a wave of dislike coming over him.

"What I want Steven is to have my family back. I want to have a place in yours and Mary's life and a place in my Granddaughter's life, both of them." She told him, her eyes narrowing when Steve laughed again, the same bitter sound as before.

"So, now suddenly out of the blue you want the family back who you so easily abandoned when we were kids because it suited you? Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news for you Doris but that wish you have will never happen. It might have escaped your notice but I'm no longer a small child who you can manipulate into doing what you want. I don't need you to rock me to sleep or to read to me at night or to make my lunches up for me. The days when I needed that are long gone and they have been for years." He told her before continuing. "And as for Mary, she's already blocked your number and wants nothing to do with you either, I'd go as far as to say that she hates you."

"I don't believe that your sister would block my number, regardless of my decisions, I'm still your mother, I've always wanted what was best for you and your sister and if you would only listen to me then I…" Doris began to say, stopping when Steve interrupted her again.

"I have been listening to everything you said ever since Joe brought me to your house in Japan and it means nothing to me because it's just words that you don't really mean and that you're only saying because in your mind you think that it's what I want to hear from you." He told her. "If you want what is best for me then you would have made an effort with Danni because she and the girls are what is best for me. If you want what is best for me then you will leave my home and my life and never come back, that's what you can do for me." Steve stated bluntly, his eyes never leaving hers. He moved across the room, coming to a stop by the front door which he opened, standing next to it with his arms crossed over his chest.

There was a heavy silence between them which was broken by Doris when she sighed and came to her feet, moving over to the door, her bag in hand and came to a stop in front of it.

"I know Steven that we could work this out if you gave me a chance to make it up to you but you're not even willing to give me that chance. I do love you regardless of what you may think or believe."

"You love the thought of me and what I can do for you but you don't actually love me. I'm a tool to you and I always will be." He corrected her. "As for giving you a chance, I've done nothing but give you chance after chance hoping that the woman I once knew would come back but she is dead, if she ever truly existed in the first place. You were just too wrapped up in yourself and your masterplan to realise that. You've made the choice that your covert missions and stealth were more important than your family and that is a decision you'll have to live with for the rest of your life, it may not bother you now but one day, when you're all alone, you'll realise what you gave up for the job."

"My…" Her voice trailed off.

"What?" Steve asked, "You didn't think that I would look into what you were doing here? Have you forgotten so quickly about what I do for a living and how good the people who work with me are? I have a team who are the best team who I have ever worked with, you should have remembered that. There is nothing left for you here Doris so I would suggest you leave Hawaii and stay away from L.A, that can be your final gift to me and Mary." He told her, waiting until she stepped outside onto the porch before he closed it on her, locking it, knowing that she would hear it.

He stood by the door for a few moment, resting his forehead against the cool wood as he tried to gather his emotions together before he pushed himself away and turned around. He could hear Catherine speaking quietly on the phone, a tone to her voice which he remembered hearing in a different life. One which told him that Catherine's interest in Billy went beyond being just professional.

He shook his head, a slight smile coming to his mouth as he headed up the stairs and headed to Grace's room, opening the door and stepping inside, his heart twisting in his chest when he saw the small girl curled up in Danni's arms, clearly crying while Emily sat in her car seat, watching the scene in front of her with a look of confusion on her face which would have looked adorable under any other situation.

Grace's reaction wasn't a surprise and truthfully it was the one which he had been expecting to find, the young girl had always been fiercely protective of her mother so hearing someone say the things which Doris had said to Danni would have angered and hurt her in equal measure.

He closed the door behind him quietly, meeting Danni's eyes when she looked up at him, a small smile coming to her face as she searched his features.

"Everything okay?" She asked quietly, her hand stroking down Grace's dark hair in a soothing manner.

"I've taken care of it." He assured her before he hunched down beside Grace, placing his hand on her back in an attempt to comfort her while he reached out with his other hand to Emily who immediately wrapped her tiny hands around his fingers and held on tight. "Gracie, I'm so sorry that Doris hurt you, you don't have to worry about her coming back here."

He hated seeing Grace upset like this and knowing that he was indirectly responsible for that pain killed him. Doris would never have been in the house if it hadn't of been for him, he watched as Grace pulled away from Danni, scrubbing at her eyes before she spoke.

"I'm sorry that your Mommy was mean to you, Mamma explained it to me, I don't understand how she could do that to you or Auntie Mary." Grace said, swallowing hard as she reached out and gripped his arm.

"Me neither Kiddo." Steve said as he pulled his small family into a hug. "Me, neither."
