Be careful what you wish for

Official story disclaimer

The characters of Lieutenant Commander Steven 'Steve' McGarrett, Special Agent Doris McGarrett, Lieutenant Catherine 'Cath' Rollins and John McGarrett do not belong to me in any shape or form. I am merely using them for my own entertainment purposes.

The character of Danielle 'Danni / Elle' Williams could probably be considered mine by now. Although the character was originally based on male Danny Williams, I think it's probably safe to say that she has become her own character. She has her own story to tell and her own individual background which differ from that on the show.

This also means that Grace is different than she is in the show as well; not only because she lives full time with her mother but also because Danni and her ex Duncan have a civil relationship with one another. Please note as well that Grace's surname in this universe where she is Danni's daughter is Taylor as Williams is Danni's maiden name while Taylor was her married name.

The character of Emily 'Emmy' McGarrett, Lily Williams and Robert 'Bobby' Williams do belong to me however as does any character who you don't recognise straight away so please don't use them without permission.

Author Note

Welcome to the Fifth chapter of 'Be careful what you wish for'

So once again I feel I should apologise for the long gap between this chapter and the previous chapter and the fact that it has taken me so long to come back to this story. It was never my intention to leave it so long but real life got in the way and then the Plot Bunnies kept attacking with new ideas!

My plan is to finish this story, hopefully within the next two week. I think that there is only one chapter left after this one. I have gone back and rewritten the previous chapters so it might be worth reading it from the beginning.

Catherine isn't a bad guy in this one, instead she is based more on my version of Cath who will feature in the Rewrite saga

Anyway, please enjoy!

Official story summary

Doris McGarrett had a plan and she was determined that her plan would go ahead, even if it meant having to break up her son and his fiancé to do it… after all she was his mother and she knew what was best for Steve. It was just a shame that Steve didn't share her point of view. (Standalone story, McDanni featuring a female Danny)

I do not have a Beta so please forgive any mistakes which may creep into this story, I always do my best to edit the story and to double check it before uploaded one of my works but sometimes mistakes do creep in, this might also include me accidentally using an English word in place of an American word as my brain, being English, doesn't always pick up on it being incorrect.

Chapter Five

The aftermath

Danni leaned down and placed a soft kiss on top of Grace's head, a smile coming to her face when Grace immediately reacted by snuggling in closer to her. It had broken her heart to walk into the room to see Grace crying silently on the bed while Emily had watched on. She never wanted her daughter to feel pain like that, especially pain which was brought on by Doris McGarrett.

She glanced up and looked at Steve, a slight frown coming to her face when she picked up on the exhaustion on his features even as he held onto them tightly, clearly trying to comfort Grace. The conflict between him and Doris had clearly taken a toll on him and it left her with a strong desire to race out of the house, find the woman and lay into her again, this time not holding back and instead telling her exactly what she thought of her but she resisted the impulse.

Her family needed her here with them, not somewhere else right now.

Steve had always tried to hide it from the world but she knew that he felt things deeply and as much as he didn't like his mother and how she now was, there would still always be a small part of him that would love the woman who he used to know back when he was a child. Throwing her out like that, even if it had been the right thing to do, would have still wounded him even as it gave him closure.

She lifted her hand to his cheek and gently applied a steady pressure on it until he looked towards her, their gazes clashing with each other.

"I love you, whatever happens that's not going to change." She told him quietly, noticing the softening of his eyes as he let out a shaky breathe and nodded at her.

"I love you as well Danno." He replied, leaning forward and kissed her, lingering over the contact for a moment, clearly needing the comfort from her before he pulled back, his eyes flickering between Grace and Emily.

"What happened with Catherine? Is she still downstairs or did you…" Her voice trailed off, knowing that he would know what she was asking him without her having to say the words out loud.

"She's still here." He confirmed, reaching up and running his hand through his hair leaving the dark strands standing up on end. "She believed Mom when she spun her latest story and I think she regrets having ever listened to her. She was on the phone with Billy when I came up here trying to sort out a meeting between you and me and him."

"Okay then, it was good of her to offer to talk to him for us." Danni said with a nod as she kissed him again before she leaned away from him and looked down at Grace, her thumb swiping away the remainder of the small girl's tears when she finally looked up at her. "How are you feeling now Monkey?"

"My head hurts a bit and I'm thirsty." Grace informed her on a sniffle as she rubbed at her eyes, her fingers trembling, the sight making Danni's heart ache as she leaned down and kissed her on top of her head, breathing in the familiar scent of the apple shampoo which Grace was favouring at the moment.

"I bet you are." Danni said as she gently placed Grace back on the mattress and came up to her feet, absently brushing her hands down the skirt of her dress out of habit. "How about we go downstairs and get you a drink of water or maybe some juice if you prefer and then you can have a lie down on the couch and rest. We can put a movie on for you unless your head hurts too much for one at the moment?" She asked.

There was a moment of silence as Grace clearly pondered the question before she tilted her head back and looked up at Danni.

"Watching a movie would be good Mamma and maybe I could have some juice?" She said, the comment causing Danni to smile, knowing that if she wanted a movie and some juice then she was going to be fine.

"A movie you will have then. Do you want to go with Steve and pick one out from the collection? He can put it on for you while I get you a drink and I'll keep Emily with me so you don't get distracted. She can be my advisor when it comes to finishing off dinner." She said, looking towards her youngest who seemed more intent on eating her own foot than helping anyone with anything.

"That sounds like a good plan to me Danni, though it might take until dinner for Grace to make up her mind about the movie." Steve said as he came up to his own feet and reached down, scooping Grace up into his arms, the action causing her to giggle.

Danni leaned down and picked up the car seat with Emily in and followed Steve out of the room, heading down the stairs, her eyes following Steve and Grace as they headed into the living room area while she carried onto the kitchen. She placed Emily down on the counter top and leaned down, kissing her daughter on her cheek before she leaned back, meeting the eyes which were swiftly becoming as grey as her own.

"We best get on with dinner or we might end up having a riot on our hands, Butterfly and having one riot in a single day is enough for anyone to deal with." She stated before she headed over to the fridge and pulled it open, quickly getting the juice out and placing it on the side before she opened up the cupboard and selected one of the bright glasses which Grace seemed to favour. She poured the juice in, quickly replacing the juice in the fridge and looked over her shoulder towards Emily, making sure that the small baby was content before she left the room and headed into the living room, placing the glass on the coffee table, a smile coming to her face when she saw both Grace and Steve looking at the DVDS and discussing them as though they somehow held the answer to life.

She headed back into the kitchen and closed the door behind her, taking a moment to check on Emily before she began preparing the rest of the meal to go with the lamb which was cooking away nicely in the oven.

She was half way through chopping the vegetables up when the kitchen door opened and Catherine walked in, her empty glass in hand which she placed beside the sink before she turned her attention to Danni who, after a glance at her, continued with her chopping.

"I made the call to Billy, he's getting his Personal Assistant to rearrange a few things so that he can see you both first thing on Tuesday morning. He wanted to do it for tomorrow but there was some kind of big Board meeting with their shareholders which he couldn't move on short notice. I hope Tuesday is okay? If not I can ask for later in the week."

"Tuesday sounds great thanks." Danni responded, flashing her a smile. "I appreciate you speaking to him for us and arranging the meeting. I doubt that Doris will be back any time soon after what Steve said to her but you can never be certain with someone like that and I'd rather be prepared for anything."

"Yeah, someone like Doris would never give up I think, not when there is something which she still wants." Catherine remarked, a thoughtful tone to her voice. "But neither does Billy, she'll have a hard time getting through him and even if she does manage it somehow, I doubt she'll get past Steve anymore. It was pretty clear from what he was saying that he is done dancing to her tune."

"You're right, I just wish for his sake that it hadn't had to come to that but she made it impossible for there to be any other outcome." Danni replied, her hand stilling for a moment before she sighed and looked back towards Catherine. "Can I get you another drink or anything?" She offered politely.

"No, I appreciate the offer but I was going to head off." Catherine responded before she glanced towards Emily. "May I?" She asked hopefully, nodding her head to the small baby.

"Of course." Danni responded with a nod of her own, watching from the corner of her eyes when Catherine approached Emily. She noted that the other woman made no attempt to lift the small baby out of her chair, instead she seemed content to just watch her for a couple of minutes before she turned her attention back to Danni. "She's incredibly cute, I've got to admit that it still blows my mind that Steve is now a Dad to two girls. If anyone had told me a few years ago that this would be his life now then I probably wouldn't have believed them." She admitted with a shrug.

"No"? Danni asked as she placed the knife down on the counter top and turned around to look at Catherine, unable to resist the opportunity to question the other woman while she was there. "I don't know much about what Steve was like before Five-O was set up, was he a lot different back then?" She queried, lifting an eyebrow when Catherine let out a startled laugh at the question.

"Sorry, I don't mean to laugh." Catherine apologised, clearly seeing the look. "It's just the Steve who is currently in the other room with your daughter is almost unrecognisable to me at times which is a good thing. Before he came back to Hawaii, he was burning out though he always followed through with the mission regardless of the personal cost to him as a person. He had no sense of self preservation but now…" Her voice trailed off for a moment as she looked over her shoulder towards the doorway, a slight frown coming to her face.

"And now?" Danni prompted after a few moments of silence, torn between wanting to hear what Steve used to be like and wanting to switch the topic to a more neutral one.

"And now he clearly has something in his life which he wants to live for and that is a good thing. Steve was… let's just say that what we wanted from the future was always widely different from one another back when we had our thing, before he met you. I'm all about the job, I can raise my hand and admit that my career will always come first because it makes me happy but Steve was always someone who wanted to meet someone, settle down with them and raise a family with them though he never admitted it out loud. I didn't want that." Catherine told her, her dark eyes meeting Danni's as she reached up and tucked some hair back behind her ear.

"Is that still how you feel?" Danni asked as she picked up the vegetables she had been chopping and placed them on the waiting baking tray to join the meet and the roast potatoes which were already cooking.

"At the moment yes." Catherine replied almost instantly, the quickness of her response causing Danni to raise an eyebrow at her before she continued with her task. "But maybe in the future, in a few years' time it might be different." She amended with a shrug. "The whole settling down, getting married thing has always been something which I see other people doing, it's not something which I relate to me."

Danni looked towards her, catching the surprised look on the other woman's face, telling her without words that Catherine had said more to her then she had initially been planning to.

"You know, there's nothing wrong with wanting to focus on your job and your work." Danni told her with a shrug of her shoulders. "You have to focus on what is good for you and if settling down and having a family isn't part of that then it isn't. Maybe one day you'll meet someone and they'll change your mind and maybe you won't. As long as you are happy with your own life then who cares."

Catherine laughed, shaking her head.

"I don't suppose you could come and talk to my Mom on my behalf please because she seems unable to grasp the fact that a partner and children aren't on the current agenda." She remarked ruefully before she looked towards the door as it opened and Grace skipped in, stopping in her tracks when she spotted Catherine in the room.

"Grace, you okay Monkey?" Danni asked quietly, wrapping her arm around the small girl when she turned at the sound of her voice and raced over to her, burying her face against her side.

"Everything okay here?" Steve asked as he followed Grace into the room, his eyes flickering over to his soon to be Step daughter before focusing on Catherine with a stony look on his face.

"Everything is fine Steve." Danni assured him, meeting his eyes when he turned and looked at her before nodding, the tension easing out of him.

"I should get going, I told Billy that I would meet him for a quick coffee, he mentioned on the phone to me that there was an offer which he wanted to discuss with me. I just want to say that I'm really sorry about what happened here, if I had known what Doris was really up to then I wouldn't have come here today and I would have at least warned you that she was on her way and was planning something." She remarked, her eyes moving between them, making it clear that her comment was directed at the both of them, rather than just at Steve."

"Thanks" Steve said with a nod at her which she returned.

She opened her mouth as though she was going to say more but closed it when her eyes dropped down towards Grace and instead she merely raised her hand up at them both and hurried out of the room. They listened in silence until they heard the front door behind her before looking at each other.

"Grace, do you want to help Steve set the table for dinner and then once that is done you can go and start watching your movie? I'm guessing you picked something out to watch?" Danni asked in a brisk tone, thankful when she felt Grace nod against her before reluctantly pulling away from Danni and moving across the room to the drawer where the cutlery was kept.

Danni watched her for a moment before turning to look at Steve as he came to a stop beside her.

"We should talk about what we're going to do." He murmured to her, leaning over as though he was looking at the food which Danni was cooking.

"I know." She replied, "But not now, we'll talk when Grace is in bed and asleep, she's already heard enough today, I don't want her getting any more upset than she already is."

"Yeah me neither." He agreed, before he leaned down and brushed a kiss over her mouth, staring at her for a moment before he turned from her, heading over to Emily, clearly to check on her, leaving Danni staring after him for a moment before she turned back to her task.

There would be time to talk later.
