This is my very first story on here. I do not own Fallout, Fallout belongs to Bethesda. I only own my original characters and my story plot.
Thank you, and enjoy the story.
The year was 2001, a sunny morning on a Tuesday. Here, in a small town called Rosewell, lived a girl in her 20's. Her name was Kareen Banks. She lived with her mother, Dahlia, her father, Stephen, and her little 5 year old sister, Calliandra, or Calli for short. Their life was perfect, especially for Kareen. Currently she was in the kitchen fixing herself and her family breakfast, her mother getting ready for the day, and her father and sister sat at the couch watching the telly. Dahlia walked out with a smile on her face. "Breakfast smells good, sweetie." She noted, which Kareen smiled back. "It's almost ready, too." She placed the last of the eggs onto the plates, sunny-side up. As Kareen placed the plates on the table, she noticed something placed in the center. She picked it up and walked over to her father.
"Dad? What's this?" She handed it to him which he looked at her after glancing at it. "Oh, it's for that new vault tec. People are getting selected in case for, when the bombs drop. We've been selected." He emphasized the last part. Calli looked up at her dad. "Bombs?" She asked curiously. Stephen rubbed her head, smiling. "Don't worry, pumpkin." He got up and went to the table. Kareen brought her sister her plate, not wanting to disturb her tv time as she joined her parents. "I heard Moira and her husband actually went and signed up to enter a vault." Dahlia brought up, Kareen glancing at her mother. "The neighbors across the way? Is that why they moved?" Her mother nodded at her. But as they were finishing up their meal, "Mommy!" Calli ran over to her mom, getting her attention. "What's the matter, baby?"
The small child gazed up, "The bombs are here!" Dahlia let out a small laugh. "What makes you say that?" Calli turned and pointed at the Tv. "The man on the Tv said so!" This got their attention as they got up and rushed over. The news seemed to be on, a man holding a report of sorts as he continued talking. "Followed by… yes, followed by flashes. Blinding flashes. Sounds of explosions… We're… we're trying to get confirmation. But we seem to have lost contact with our affiliate stations… We do have… coming in… confirmed reports. I repeat, confirmed reports of nuclear detonations in New York and Pennsylvania. My god." The man placed a hand on his forehead as Kareen looked to her parents, "Dad…" Her voice was filled with fear as sirens were heard from outside. Stephen took action as he scooped up Calli in his arms. "Kareen, get the flyer from the table!"
The girl didn't hesitate as she quickly ran and grabbed the paper as the entire family left the house, other families hurrying as well. The flyer in her hands read for a vault just nearby, which the father led them immediately. "Hurry! Stay together!" Dahlia exclaimed, keeping a tight hold on her daughter's hand. Army soldiers directing people in the right direction. Before long they arrived at the entrance of the vault, an army soldier letting people in. When they stepped up he looked at them. "Are you signed up?" Kareen walked up and presented the flyer. "We got this. please! Let us in." She pleaded. The man took the flyer, then nodded. "Go, hurry." They rushed to where other people were standing on a platform. When they made it voices called out to send the platform moving. "Daddy, I'm scared…" Calli whimpered out, which her father comforted her.
Kareen stepped over, brushing her sister's hair. "We're gonna be okay, Cal." Almost after she said that a blinding explosion went off, just as the platform began going under. Thankfully everyone made it in time before it reached them. The platform escalated downwards. "We made it, just in time. Thank god." A woman behind the family mumbled, holding onto her husband tightly. Soon enough the platform made it down, inside the vault. Vault Tec security directed everyone up stairs, into another room where vault suits were prepared. Kareen and her family received one from the female vault member. "Take a vault suit, then head down the hall." When Kareen took hers, she walked down where capsule-like machines waited for them.
She glanced wearily at them. "What are these for?" She asked aloud. A man in a lab coat replied to her question. "These pods are going to put you in a cryogenic sleep, so there's no discomfort when we go deeper into the vault. You'll be awakened afterwards." Kareen nods at him, changing into her vault suit. But while she was about to head inside, the cries of her sister got her attention. She turns to see Calli clinging onto her dad, no intention of letting go. "No, no, no!" Her little voice cried. Stephen looked at the man sadly. "She's still shaken up from everything." The man shook his head. "She's alright to stay with you. It's perfectly fine." With that solved everyone entered the pods, Kareen taking one last look at her parents and sister. And with a reassuring smile from them, the pods closed and sleep took the girl over.
When Kareen awoke, she expected to be greeted with the man in the lab coat, but her pod was still closed. 'Did something happen?' She thought to herself. Voices were soon heard, but they weren't familiar. She lowered her head to where her hair covered her eyes. The sound of her pod door being attempted open reached her ears. "This one's not budging. Seems like they didn't make it. Check the other ones." A harsh female voice stated. Kareen peeked through her bangs as unfamiliar people passed. One of them wore a strange tattoo on their upper forearm. "...This one." The same voice demanded as they pointed at her parents pods. Kareen glanced around, and to her horror spotted the same man on the floor, unmoving. Whoever these people were, weren't with Vault Tec.
Both pods opened as her parents stumbled out. Dahlia gasped out, "Is it over?" One of the intruders reached for Calli. "Come here, sweetie." But when they grabbed her Stephen pulled back. "Let go!" Dahlia tried to get up and help her husband but was knocked back. "Just comply, and there won't be trouble." Stephen wasn't having it. "You're not getting her!" And before Kareen's eyes the woman raised a gun and fired straight into his head, causing Dahlia to cry out for her husband. The person grabbed ahold of Calli, carrying her away as the woman pointed the gun at Dahlia's head. At that moment Kareen and her mother locked eyes, before her life was taken away instantly. The woman huffed out, walking away with the others. When they were gone and out of sight Kareen lifted her head and started pounding on the glass, screaming out in agony for her parents. Not long after, the pod started back up again and sleep overtook her.
"Thank you for signing up for Vault Tec! We welcome your stay." A robotic voice woke Kareen up as the pod opened, the girl falling to her knees as she coughed out. She took gasps of air. When her head raised up her eyes locked onto her parents' bodies. She crawled over to them, tears spilling from her eyes. A loud scream left her lips as she mourned. Minutes passed as she cried, before wiping her tears. She looked to where the people left from, anger filling her entire body. She turned to her deceased parents, before placing a hand on both of them. "I'm gonna find Cal, I promise. They'll pay." She uttered, fury filling her vision. But as she started to stand up her eyes caught something in her mother's vest.
She reached for it, revealing it to be an old photograph. It showed her mom and dad, and a younger her with two other people with an infant in the woman's arms. Her mother's stomach had a bump, indicating that she was still pregnant with Calli at the time. The woman and man both had pure blond hair, the woman having heterochromia eyes, one light blue and one slightly darker blue. Kareen vaguely remembers them as the neighbors from across the way that moved. Moira and Gregor Turner if she remembers. Her mother did say that they signed up to Vault Tec. With the photograph in hand, she headed out of the room, a goal in mind.
Future chapters will be longer.
