Day 4 - Impaling
"Bravo one this is Havoc, we've got ISR back up on you guys. We count at least 15 hostiles between you and the exfil point. How copy?" Blackburn's voice came over the comms as the team took turns staying behind cover and returning fire.
"Good copy Havoc, working the problem. How far off from us are they?" Jason asked.
"Looks like about five mikes." came the reply.
"Copy. Bravo out. What's the status of our QRF?" Jason asked.
"Getting them spun up now."
"Alright, enemy contact is five mikes out and our exfil point is 15 mikes. The only way to exfil is over that ridge. Three, how many frags and crashes you got?" Jason said, talking through the problem.
"Two of each left." Sonny yelled into the comms over the gunfire.
"Copy. Toss one to four and six. We'll cover you guys, get up on that ridge and frag them and then we'll join!" Jason instructed. The three men confirmed they understood the plan, and then did as they were told and got ready to move. Sonny was closest to the ridge so he went first, under the cover of his teammates fire behind him. Trent and Clay were about to follow when Trent suddenly grabbed the back of Clay's vest and yanked him to the ground when he caught motion out of the corner of his eye. He tried to return fire and warn Sonny at the same time, but it was too late. The team watched in horror as an RPG hit the ridge directly behind Sonny, and sent him tumbling mercilessly down the sharp hill.
Sonny vaguely heard Trents scream of warning through his earpiece, but it was quickly drowned out by the deafening boom that sounded from behind him. In the next seconds he was thrown in the air, met the ground roughly, and tumbled down the slope of the hill, thrown around like a ragdoll. When he finally came to a stop, the pain quickly washed over him, settling mostly in his left shoulder. Fortunately - or unfortunately, depending on how your look at it - for him, the helmet strapped securely to his head had kept him from losing consciousness throughout the entire ordeal, meaning that he had been aware of everything. This also meant that he was aware that he was now in more danger than ever after rolling down a hill, likely closer to the enemy than what is recommended. He started to move his arms around in search of his rifle, stopping abruptly as an involuntary scream of pain escaped him.
"Bravo three come in! Bravo three, do you copy?! Bravo thr…" Clay was cut off by the sound of a guttural yell in the distance.
"Shit. That had to be him… and that wasn't fear, that was pain." Trent cursed, alo hearing the sound. The two seals had stopped their progress over the ridge to fight off the enemies at the base of the hill, finally cutting into the numbers. The rest of the team had joined them seconds after watching Sonny thrown down the slope of the hill.
"We gotta get down to him! Does anyone have eyes on Three?!" Clay asked, worry growing in his voice.
"Six this is Havoc, ISR is still up, we have eyes on Three. He appears to be about a half a mike from your pos. He isn't moving but the enemy is." Davis' voice sounded over the comms, the fear in her voice didn't go unnoticed by the team.
"Copy that Havoc. Whats the play Jase?" Clay responded.
"We work the problem. Havoc this is one, update on the QRF?" Jason asked, already forming a plan.
"QRF is two mikes out. Get to three as quickly as possible and get to exfil, QRF will handle the opposition shortly." Came the reply and instructions. Jason replied and got coordinates of Sonnys location, and the team waisted no time moving in his direction.
Sonny heard footsteps approaching and gripped his shaking hand tighter around the handle of his sidearm, not willing to go down without a fight.
"Sonny? Sonny, you ok?!" He let out a loud sigh of relief and dropped his arm to his side at the sound of his brothers getting closer to him.
"...'ve b..been be..better…" he forced a reply, his voice shaking with pain. Soon the team was crowded around hi in watch positions so Trent could kneel down next to him. They relaxed minutes later as the sound of a fighter jet went as quickly as it came, eliminating the enemies at the bottom of the hill with ease. As soon as they turned their attention to him, their faces dropped when they realized what Trent was working with. There was a thick wooden branch sticking out of the front of Sonny's left shoulder, right through where the collarbone should be.
"Uh alright. Alright Sonn I need you to hold still. I need to get stuff to secure that thing so we can move you." Trent said.
"Y..you mean you wanna l...leave it i..in?!" Came the unsteady question from the Texan.
"I'm sorry, I have to. Now I need to check the rest of your body, does anything else hurt?" Trent asked, fear gripping him at how docile Sonny was being. He had to be in extreme pain for that to be the case.
"Ju...just m..my side." He replied and Trent carefully moved his shirt up to reveal a large and growing bruise on his teammates side, likely hiding broken ribs and who knows what else underneath. He started to prod the area as gently as he could but yanked his hands back and cursed when the pressure on the tender area made Sonny shoot upright, effectively dis-lodging the branch from his shoulder.
"Dammit Sonny! I said hold still! Clay, get me all the gauze outta my back you can find right now, we gotta pack the wound now, that branch might've been the only thing keeping him from bleeding!" Trent said and both men frantically jumped into action.
"Hey! Sonny! Hey, stay with me!" Clay said, resisting the urge to shake his friend as he watched his eyes roll back into his head.
"Jase, we gotta get him outta here. Metal, sit him up, carefully, I need to wrap the back of the shoulder." Trent said, looking up and their team leader who nodded, trying to keep the worry from showing on his face while continuing to inform Havoc of the situation.
In the next minute, Sonny was being carried as carefully as they could while keeping the speed towards exfil.
Later…
Sonny woke up and groaned as he ppened his eyes, the stale sterile smell telling him he was in a hospital somewhere. He scanned the room slowly, getting his beatings and wondering why the room was empty until his eye landed on a small baggie and a note on his bed table. He reached out slowly to pick up the items, hissing as even the slow movement of his opposite shoulder sent a jolt of pain through his injured side. He pulled the note closer, looking at what had to be Trents writing, which was awful for someone who had been an honors student growing up.
Doc let me in the room during your surgery since I was the one keeping you from bleeding out at the time. Anway,I managed to snag these little suckered, maybe you can frame them and hang them up or something. And next time, when I say hold still, for the love of god would you actually hold still?! Anyway, we Blackburn insisted on debriefing, figured you wouldn't be awake for a while. We'll be back soon. Rest up.
Sonny set the note down and picked up the baggie that contained three sizable shards of wood, lucky they had cleaned the blood off of them. He laughed to himself until it jostled his hurt ribs, and pressed the button for another does of painkillers, soon drifting off again happily, knowing his brtohers would be there when he woke up.
