Day 10 - "I'm sorry, I didn't know."
"All Bravo signs this is Six. Squirter has been eliminated." Clay's voice finally sounded over the comms after a long few minutes. He and Sonny had both been sent after two squirters who had managed to escape the target building just after the team had hit it. The team could hear the scuffle both men were having with their targets, and somehow, Clay had managed to finish his fight before Sonny. Everyone knew he'd surely rub it in Sonny's face the first chance he got. Sonny threw one final punch and managed to get some distance between him and the man he was sent to track down and fired off a round, finishing the fight. He put a finger on the comms and gave a similar response, and then made his way back to the building his team was gathered in.
Sonny walked back into the main room where the team was gathering intel, and saw Clay standing in the middle with Trent and Metal nearby.
"Alright Blondzilla, before you go makin' jokes about how you got back here quicker, my guy was built like a bull! Way bigger than that little rabbit you were chasin'!" Sonny joked with a smirk on his face as he clapped a hand down on Clay's shoulder, walking up behind him. He nearly jumped out of his skin, worrying and fear filling him when his action elicited a yell of pain from the youngest member who nearly dropped to his knees.
"Ah…. Dammit Sonny! I th..ink the guy broke my collarbone!" Clay managed to say through the pain in his shoulder that had ramped up from throbbing to piercing as he cradled his right arm against his stomach.
"I… I'm sorry! I didn't know!" Sonny stammered, fierce guilt now replacing the worry. He looked around to the rest of the guys, expecting to see judgment or anger on their face, but got either worry or sympathy in return.
"It's… it's ok man, wasn't on purpose. And for the rec...record, my guy was definitely no rabbit. You just aren't fast enough!" Clay said, getting a mischievous tint in his eyes as he tried to laugh through the pain. Snickers were heard around the room as the team finished up and they got ready to leave. Sonny shook his head and tried to force a laugh. He knew it would be funny soon enough, but right now all he felt was guilty. Intentional or not, hurting a teammate is the worst thing possible.
Later, in their favorite bar…
Sonny pulled the back of his hat a little lower on his head, as messing with his hat had been a nervous tic of his since he was a little boy. He made his way across the bar when he saw the man he was looking for, after grabbing two bottles from the bartender.
"Hey, how's the uh, how's the shoulder doin'? What'd the doc say?" He asked Clay when the younger man turned towards him, still fiddling with the strap of the sling that was resting across the back of his neck.
"Fractured, just like Trent thought. So I'll be stuck around here for a few weeks." Clay answered, happily accepting the fresh beer from Sonny.
The kid spoke up again when he got silence in return and knew exactly why.
"Hey, I'm good Son. It's not your fault my shoulders busted, and you're giving yourself too much credit if you think you made it worse." Sonny sighed and nodded his head in response. He knew that, he just really did need to hear it.
"Trust me, I don't think you're quite strong enough to break someone's bone just from a slap on the shoulder!" Clay said, the same mischievous grin appearing on his face. Sonny shook his head and gave him a look of mock indignation.
"I'll have you know there Bam Bam, back on my early days of green team on a mission in…"
"Hey now! I thought we agreed that story stayed in Iraq!" Jason's voice cut the Texan off as he and the rest of the guys joined them. Sonny threw his hands up and laughed with the rest of them at the confused look on Clay's face.
"Sorry kid, should've been born a few years earlier if ya wanted to know the details of that story!" Metal said with a laugh. Clay picked up his beer with his good hand, swearing that he wouldn't ask any more questions, but only for now. This earned more chuckles, and the guys settled in for the swapping of stories to begin.
