Dreaming About Her

Chapter 5

As soon as Eddie got out to the waiting room with Jamie's family, they each took turns going in to see him. Henry decided to be the first to go in after Eddie and he sat with him for around 15 minutes. Henry was always the one to try to hold it together for the family, considering he was the patriarch of the entire Reagan family. When Henry looked at Jamie in that hospital bed though, all he could see was the little boy who used to run around all the time though. After Joe died, and Jamie decided to become a cop, everyone was a little bit surprised. Jamie never acted like he'd wanted to, and everybody was proud of him when he went off to law school. Henry was so proud of Jamie when he graduated from the academy. Another Reagan man had gone into the family business, but he was always scared that they would get a call that him or Danny had gotten hurt. He had hoped and prayed that day would never come, but sitting there seeing Jamie lying there, reality had hit. Henry sat and talked to Jamie the entire time he was in the room with him. He wasn't quite sure if he thought Jamie could hear him, but he really hoped he could. He quietly told him he loved him and was very gentle as to not hurt his youngest grandson, as he touched Jamie's hand.

Soon after Henry came out, Frank told Danny to go ahead. When Danny got in there, he wasn't quite prepared for what he seen. Danny had already lost one brother, and had lost his wife close to 3 years prior, and was sure that he couldn't handle losing his youngest brother. As Danny walked into the room, he couldn't believe what he seen. His baby brother was lying there and looked so pale and almost helpless hooked up to all the machines. As he walked closer to Jamie's side, he grabbed Jamie's hand. Danny wasn't the type of guy to show his emotions, but they were alone and he didn't really feel like he could hold it in right now.

"Little Bro, I know I used to rip on you all the time and call you a rookie for so long or whatever, but I really need you to listen to me right now. I can't lose another brother. You know how horrible it got when we lost Joe, and I can't go through that again. So, you better be fighting like hell to get back to us.", he said, almost balling like a baby. Danny continued talking, even though he wasn't quite sure if Jamie could hear him.

"I don't know if you've ever known this, but I seriously look up to you. The way you handle yourself so much better than I ever have. That's truthfully the reason that you're going to go so much further than I ever have."

Danny continued to sit there by Jamie for a few more minutes and decided it would be best if he go out and give Erin and his dad a chance to come see Jamie. Before he left, he looked down at Jamie lying there and said, "I love you, brother".

As Danny walked out into the waiting room, his dad told Erin to go ahead and go back. Frank figured he would go after, and if Nikki wanted to go back after he did, she could. Nikki wasn't quite sure if she wanted to see her uncle in the state that he was right now. Her and Jamie had a pretty close relationship, especially after Joe died. She wasn't hardly a teenager when Joe died, but she was old enough to understand everything that was going on then.

When Erin walked into Jamie's hospital room, she tried to prepare herself for what she was about to see. Their whole family had been put through the ringer when Joe died, especially after their mom had died around 4 years earlier. The Linda died 3 years ago, and Erin knew that she couldn't handle losing another person she cared about, especially not another brother. Erin and Jamie always had great relationship, and Jamie would always ask her for advice if he needed it. Jamie had told her once not long ago, that if it wasn't for her advice after Eddie got shot, he probably would have never told Eddie how he felt. Erin loved seeing her little brother happy, and she hadn't ever seen him as happy as he was with Eddie. She didn't even think she seen him that happy when he was with Sydney. She was so happy for them both, and even though her and Eddie often had little arguments; She loved having Eddie as a sister-in-law.

As Erin walked over closer to Jamie, she stood there for a minute and put her hand on his. She hated to see her baby brother lying in a hospital bed, and she felt so helpless. All she could do was pray that he would be ok. She thought to herself that she really hoped Jamie could hear what she was about to say to him.

"I don't know if you can hear me Jamie, but if you can, just know that we're all hear and you're not alone. We all want you to wake up, but it's important that you get better so just take your time, and we'll all be here when you're ready. I love you, little brother. Wake up soon."

With that Erin really wasn't sure she could handle standing there looking at her little brother so hurt any longer. So, she decided to walk back out to the waiting room. When she got out there, it was Frank's turn to go back. Frank had visited many wounded officers in this hospital before, but it took on a whole new meaning when it's your own son.

Frank knew he wasn't prepared to see what was lying behind that hospital door that he waited by for a minute, before finally turning the knob and entering his youngest son's room. As he walked in, he couldn't quite grasp the fact that it was really his youngest son laying there. The one who was always so full of energy as a child, was now laying there before his very eyes, so pale and motionless. Frank couldn't help, but to feel responsible for Jamie getting hurt. He always felt responsible when an officer got hurt, but this one was extremely personal.

As he was sitting there, he was reminded of how proud him and his wife were when Jamie graduated from law school. His wife was so happy, that she wouldn't have to worry about another one of her kids joining the NYPD. She already had two to worry about and that was enough for her. Frank felt like he had broken his promise to her to keep their kids safe now. First, Joe lost his life and now Jamie was lying in a hospital bed fighting for his. As he was sitting there, he took Jamie's hand and held it, while he started talking to him.

"Jamie, I hope you know that I can't take the loss of another child. You have got to wake up from this and come home. Your wife needs you to wake up for her, and all of us need you to wake up. I'm sorry that I couldn't protect you from this. I love you, son." – Frank said, while nearly in tears.

Frank sit in Jamie's room the longest out of all of them, besides Eddie of course. He finally thought he should probably go out and join the others in the waiting room. When Frank walked out into the waiting room, he took a seat. Nikki wasn't quite sure if she really wanted to go in there. Joe was taken from them so suddenly, and after that Nikki had grown a little closer to each of her uncles, but her and Jamie had a pretty close relationship. If she ever needed help with something that she didn't want to talk to her mom about, she would ask Jamie. She knew it would hurt to see him lying there, but she felt like she really needed to go in there. So, as she walked towards the door to his room, she felt like she might throw up. She had seen family members in the hospital before, but never like this. As she walked in, she took a seat beside of his bed. She was a tad scared to touch him, because she really didn't want to possibly hurt him. So she just sat there in silence for a few minutes. She finally decided to start talking, but wasn't quite sure of what to say.

"Hey, Uncle Jamie." – she said, unsure of what to say next.

"I don't know if you can hear me, but I really hope you can. I don't really know what to say at the moment. You're the only person that I've ever seen like this in a hospital. I was so young when Uncle Joe died, but I was old enough to understand it. Which is why I'm just going to say that you can't die, and you can't leave us. I know that my mom took it so hard when Uncle Joe died, and she can't handle losing two of her brothers. I really don't want to lose two uncles either. Aunt Eddie really needs you, and she really shouldn't have to lose you this close after you got married. Everybody in the family really needs you to wake up, Uncle Jamie. So, please wake up soon and be ok." – Nikki continued, trying not to cry. After she sat there for a few more minutes, she walked back out to the waiting room with everybody. Jack was currently at college, so he wasn't there to go in. Sean had gone out of town to visit Jack at college, so they were together when Danny called and told them. Everybody else sat there in the waiting room drinking coffee, and none of them really wanted to leave. Eddie went back into Jamie's room and stayed in there most of the time. One at a time they would walk to the door and look in the window to check on her. They all sat there hoping and praying that Jamie would get better and be able to wake up soon.

Author's Note: Hey everybody! I know it's been almost a year since my last update and chapter to this story. I knew which way I wanted to take this story, but kept trying to figure out the perfect way to write it. I finally figured out how to write it, and I really hope you all enjoy it. More coming soon! Let me know what you all think!

Also, I know I didn't include a flashback in this Chapter. I mostly wanted to focus on each of the family member's views as they went in to see him, in this chapter. I actually wasn't quite sure if I wanted to add a part with Nikki going in to see him, but I've always felt like him and Nikki have a pretty close relationship, so I decided to add it. I'm interested to see what you all think about that part. In the coming chapters, it will mainly focus around Jamko, and there should be more flashbacks.
