It was a bright night, the sun was about to set, but the summer air was still warm. A tall, young man stood in front of an old stone brick house. He was wearing an oversized teal coat and tight brown trousers, and was holding an old brown suitcase in his hand.
He didn't want to do this. The last time he saw them was when he left the family house because they didn't believe in him.
He ran his hand through his hair as he rocked on his feet. Newton Artemis-Fido Scamander stood on the path to his childhood home, unmoving as he stared at it. Hesitance caused his feet to stick to the ground as the sun hid behind the horizon.
'It will be fine. Just go in and eat.' Newt thought to himself before slowly walking down the path and up to the door. He wasn't looking forward to the whole: 'let me guess, you failed' speech from his mother and father. Not to mention his older brother who tried to get him the job.
He would prove them wrong!
Newt had a book ready to be published, and he had met a woman he thought he might be in love with, even though he had no idea how to express those feelings.
Newt stopped walking when a pain shot through his spine. He ignored it as he started to walk again. He took a deep breath as he approached the door, gripping his case handle so tightly it made his hand sting.
He let out a small sigh before he knocked on the door softly. Nobody answered. Newt waited a few minutes. Cursing under his breath, he raised his hand and rapped a little harder. Newt started to rock on his feet again.
Finally, he heard someone unlock the door and open it. The loud creaking hurt his ears, and he covered one of them with his free hand. Newt didn't need to look to know that his older brother was standing at the door.
"Art!" His brother said in a booming voice, that pierced Newt's ears.
"Hello," Newt said in his quiet, calm voice. "It's…um, good to see you," Newt didn't meet his brother's gaze. He felt Theseus wrap his arms around him, causing Newt to tense up. He kept his arms to his sides.
"It's good to see you too, little brother. Come in, come in, Mother is waiting for you inside," Theseus pulled out of the hug.
Newt glanced up at him then looked away. He wondered why Theseus didn't include his father in his statement. However, Newt knew his relationship with his father was rocky, so that might be the reason why. The Hufflepuff nodded and walked into his childhood home, following Theseus.
His home was just the same the day he left on that night, many moons ago. The same pictures and clocks stood on the entryway walls. It looked older, but Newt didn't care for these things.
This wasn't his home anymore.
Sure, it felt welcoming enough, but Newt wasn't at home. His home was elsewhere. hot pain went through him again as he walked past the stairs and into the living room where his mother sat. She was staring at the fire.
"Mother?" Theseus asked with a small smile.
Newt raised an eyebrow and smiled a little, he did miss his mother.
"Mother, Newton is here. We can eat now," Theseus said in a gentle voice, one Newt had not heard him use before. Theseus' tone shocked him, but he stayed quiet as he put his case by his father's empty chair. He was yet to see his father, but Newt stayed quiet. He walked over to his mother and sat down next to her, but he didn't say anything still. Theseus smiled at her and sat down also. Soon the family was sitting by the fire in silence.
A few minutes later, Newt's mother stood up and walked over to the dining room. "Come on, boys, let's eat! Newton you must be starving," she said, clapping her hands together.
Newt flinched at the sound, but he didn't show it. "I'm not hungry…Um and father doesn't want me around anyway," Newt said, closing his eyes as he sat there. Newt didn't see his brother's face fall, but he heard his mother slam her hand on the wall.
"Art, our father left after you left. He said that he was going to look for you. He was annoyed, but he never came back," Theseus' admission startled Newt, and he felt his eyes widen in shock.
"What?" Newt asked as if he didn't understand what his brother was saying.
He flinched and let out a small whimper, Newt heard Theseus's feet hammer in his head and he felt his hand on his shoulder. Newt didn't flinch at the contact.
"Brother?" Theseus asked but Newt didn't hear him fully. Newt's vision started to go fuzzy, and he closed his eyes in an attempt to make it stop. Everything turned black as he heard his brother and mother's voice calling out to him.
Newt woke to the smell of food, It smelled good and it made him warm inside. There was also some crying, but Newt didn't care to know why. His eyes opened to see Theseus looking at him with a plate in his hands. Newt looked at it and shook his head. Theseus raised an eyebrow and shoved it into his hands.
"Eat brother. Then you can tell me about your trip," Theseus told him.
Newt sighed but he nodded anyway and started to eat. He knew at this moment, that he can now tell his family everything without getting the speech.
