The morning had been like any other Monday morning as far as Stevie could see. She had got to work, yelled up the stairs for Miranda to get a move on and opened the shop. The day had gone as it usually did. She did the accounts, served the customers and got through the day. Miranda had seemed a little quieter, more subdued than usual but nothing had seemed wrong. Now as she sat next to Gary in the waiting area of the hospital she replayed the day's events in her mind.
"We get a delivery on Monday's." She sighed as Gary leaned forwards in his seat, his elbows rested on his knees as he held his head in his hands Stevie didn't know when she had seen him so lost. It really was as if Miranda Preston was his other half.
"And?"
"And it was just a normal day. Totally normal. How does this happen on a normal day?"
"Don't ask me."
"Well, she seemed quieter. Not exactly up for the day but I put that down to me waking her up. You know what she can be like in the mornings."
Gary sighed. Miranda was a home body, she did not appreciate being made to get up and go to work at the best of times. He could imagine she had been a little grumpy with her best friend but didn't want to think of anything other than what was happening behind the doors of the Accident and Emergency waiting area.
"Did you call Penny?"
"Yes," Stevie sighed sadly. "Tilly is on the way to collect her. She has car trouble at the moment so Tilly said she would pick her up and bring her here." Stevie explained. "Why aren't they telling us anything?"
"Because maybe they don't have anything to tell yet?" Gary huffed. "I left early for work. We have that wedding reception booked for Saturday. That friend of Tilly's getting married. I wanted to check on the plans before I opened up. I should have woken her before I left. If she was ill."
"You wouldn't notice. You know what she is like. If she has a cold it's the biggest drama ever. If it's something serious, a proper illness she will pretend it isn't happening. Being properly unwell scares her, so she tries to ignore it."
"I know." Gary closed his eyes. "She's going to be ok, isn't she? I mean. This is Miranda. She is going to be ok."
Tilly smiled sadly. "Yeah, yeah of course she is."

Miranda had no idea what had happened. One minute she had been in bed at home with Stevie berating her for being a no show and then she was in an ambulance. Her head hurt and she felt sick, her left arm felt heavy as pins and needles seemed to attack her face. She was not happy. A nurse headed towards her.
"Oh, you're awake."
"Yesh." Miranda sighed, not knowing why her speech was slurred. "Grrry? Mum?"
"Your husband and friend are in the waiting room. Let me check you over and I will call them in." The nurse smiled as he shone a light in her eyes. Miranda winced, it was like having needles stuck in her eyes. A wave of nausea hit her.
"I."
"Ok," The nurse handed her a vomit bowl as she closed her eyes.
"Whass ha, happened?"
"You had a nasty fall. Do you remember? Down some stairs." The nurse squeezed her hand as Miranda's eyes snapped open.
"Fall?"
"Your friend said you'd been a little off colour. Don't worry we know about the baby, the scan we did shows all ok there." He smiled as Miranda seemed to relax. She was still early on in her pregnancy and didn't want to risk anything going wrong. She remained quiet as the nurse worked around her.
"Garrry?"
"I'll call him." The nurse smiled before leaving the room. Miranda rested her head back on the trolley wishing she could remember what happened, that the pain would go. She needed to see her husband and in that moment she really really needed to see her Mum. Someone had to know what was going on, she just hoped they could tell her.
