For Alex being back at Grey Sloan felt like he hadn't been away at all. the old family, he'd known welcoming him back as nothing had happened with the exception of Link and Dr Bailey who had mentioned it wasn't her business but also couldn't stop dropping random digs at him. Alex could take it, honestly, he'd said it to Link and he'd say it and again no one hated him more then he hated himself.

He honestly hadn't expected to see Jo today, assuming she was gonna avoid him for the entirety of his trip and while he was disappointed, it was something he could live with. It was after all his own fault, he's ruined everything they were, burnt every bridge they'd spent years making. She had every right to ignore him, to want nothing to do with him and honestly, he'd promised to keep his distance, but he couldn't get the memory of their night together out of his mind. She'd awakened something in him he thought he was never gonna feel again and ever since then he'd been chasing the high he felt.

"Well?" He snaps, watching as Meredith approaches, he'd been angrily pacing back and forth now for what felt like an eternity waiting for an update on Jo.

"Well, what?" She mutters, she looks tired, as she grabs a tablet from the side, immediately tapping away checking on all her current patients as well as Jo's.

"What is going on?"

"I don't know Alex and if I did I wouldn't be able to tell you anyway." Meredith fumed, moving out of Alex's path. After a moment's reflection, however, she lets out a deep sigh, dropping down onto the empty seats in the waiting room. "You can be angry and give me that dirty look but it changes nothing, Alex."

"How can you not know?" Alex continues to pace around, his fists clenched as his eye kept flicking back and forth towards the door. "We've been waiting for hours,"

"It's been twenty minutes Alex," Meredith notes as she pats the seat beside her, trying to contain the worry she felt for Jo in front of Alex.

They'd been sitting around for about an hour, interns sporadically appearing with updates on other patients. Alex had been surprised that Link hadn't appeared in all this time, he'd been bracing himself for another fight. Mer hadn't moved from his side, despite insisting that she should go be with patients, that the hospital couldn't be two general surgeons down, she had ignored him. He knew deep down she wasn't here for him, she was more likely there for Jo or to stop Alex being the first face she saw when she woke up.

"Fuck this…" Alex growls they'd had no updates for the last hour. She was a doctor in this hospital. These people were her family, surely they should be doing everything in their power to find out what's wrong with her. He'd take the tests himself if he had too.

"Alex" Mer said in a warning tone, as she watched Alex stalk off angrily in the opposite direction of Jo. "Where are you going?"

"I'm walking it off" He barks, waving his hands out as he slams the doors open making everyone in the vicinity jump.

"Dr Karev?" Alex ignored the lab tech, as pushed past him, scanning the computer for Jo's name.

"I need the results for Josephine Wilson." He mutters, frowning as the lab technician shuts down the screen, scoffing as he pushes past Alex. "Listen I'm not asking"

"It's against the law." The technician mutters, shaking his head at Alex.

"Then you better turn yourself around so you don't see me look," Alex grumbles, turning back to the computer he begins to tap away, surprised to find the majority of passwords hadn't changed. "Move...now" he snaps at the technician who was still hovering beside him.

Josephine Wilson

Marital Status Widowed

Glucose

HCG

FBC

Alex scans and rescans their results, his heartbeat rising in his chest as his eyes fall back to the HCG levels they were elevated, which meant one thing.

She's pregnant.

Jo's pregnant.

Holy crap Jo's pregnant. What did that mean? Was it? From the results, she was roughly five weeks. I mean the dates lined up don't they? But it didn't mean it was him right? Jo's a grown woman she can do whatever the hell she wants but five weeks, five weeks is exactly when they were at the conference. Raking through his mind he tried to remember if he'd used protection, it was like muscle memory for him to grab one but Jo had thrown him off his game, so wrapped up in the feel of her he'd forgotten to even mention it. Jo was always on the pill when they'd been together he'd never really thought about it until now.

"Karev what hell is wrong with you?" Alex jumped, as Bailey's voice came from behind him, taking him right back to his intern days. "I could have you fired."

"I don't work here" Alex mutters, straightening out here meets Bailey's eye. He couldn't give a shit if she told him he couldn't do any more surgeries here, he needed to go find Jo and he needed to do it now.

"I could have your medical license but I don't like what happened when I tried that with one of you before," Bailey says giving Alex a pointed look as she pushes him to the side.

"I just needed.."

"You needed nothing, it is not your place anymore Alex, now go before I have you removed from my hospital." She snaps, glaring at Alex as he quickly exits the room.

"She's awake?" Meredith spins around to find Alex there, he's soaking wet clearly his idea of walking it off had included breaking into the lab and then standing outside in the rain for the last three hours.

"Alex stop" Meredith leaps forward stopping Alex in his tracks.

"Let me see her." He grumbles trying to push Meredith off him without actually hurting her.

"Are you out of your mind?" Meredith growls, smacking his arms, glaring up at him, he could swear if looks could kill he'd be a dead man.

"Just let me see her Mer."

"I can't...no...Alex listen." She snaps as Alex stops struggling against her.

"What's he doing up here?" Turning the both find Link behind him, his face stone cold, his lips pressed together in a thin line as he waits for a response. Mia's attached to his hip, the little one oblivious to the tensions in the room as Link rubbed her back soothing keeping her faced away.

"He's leaving," Mer mutters, pushing on Alex's back.

"Like hell I am, I wanna see Jo." Alex grunts, as Mer elbows his ribs.

"Mommy?" At Jo's name, Mia lifts her head out of Link's neck, turning a smile playing on her face as she sees Meredith. "Merida" she hadn't quite got the hold of Meredith but she thought the Disney princess was close enough.

"Yeah, we're going Bug one second." Link mutters, looking down at Mia, continuing to rub her back softly. "She doesn't want him up here." He whispers, directing his gaze to Alex as he pushes past them heading towards Jo's room.

Alex felt like ice had been dropped down his back, the mini Jo in Link's arms had him transfixed. "Is she? Is she Jo's?" He manages to squeak out as they disappear from sight.

Sighing Meredith nods. "I told you her life was more complicated than you knew."

"She has a daughter?" Alex mutters still trying to wrap his brain in how much has changed for Jo over the years, not only was she a widow but also a single mother...and pregnant...and freaking pregnant with what he assumed was his baby. "Does she have any more?"

"No, it's just her and Mia."

"Shit...shitting hell"

"Karev!" Bailey's voice booms as she catches sight of him from the end of the corridor, a deep scowl written across her face as she approaches.

"I'm not going...move out of my way" Alex snaps pushing past Mer, he heads towards the door he'd just seen Link go through, he had to talk to Jo, "Let me see my wife!" He snaps pulling out of Meredith's grip as she tries to hold him back.

"Alex...she's not your wife anymore." Meredith hesitates, placing her hand on Alex's arm, grimacing as Alex realises what he'd just said.

"You'd do well to remember that Karev. Stay in your lane." Bailey chides coming to stand beside them.

Stepping back from the two he rubs a hand across his face, it's all too much, he's not good with emotion, he never has been but this is way too much for him. "Okay okay, I'm going, I'm going...tell Jo I wanna talk to her." He mumbles, backing away from them in a hurry.

"Mommy…" Mia's face lights up at the sight of Jo, instantly reaching out towards her, her little fists clenching and unclenching in a desperate attempt to get to her.

"Hi, my little love bug," Jo whispers softly, her head still a little fuzzy from earlier as Link places Mia down gently on the side of Jo's bed.

"You sick?" Mia mumbled as she curled up on Jo's side, her little hand dancing over the IV in Jo's arm.

Jo nods, wrapping an arm around her and placing a soft kiss to her head, she was so little, still just a baby in Jo's eyes, she was far too young to have the sort of worry she did right now in her eyes. "A little bit sick yeah but I'm gonna stay here with auntie Mer and you are gonna have a sleepover at uncle Link and aunt Amelia's."

"Yeah she is and we're gonna watch Toy Story and eat ice cream with the boys aren't we?" Amelia peered round the door, an instant smile gracing her face as she caught sight of Link. Jo watched as a silent conversation seemed to play out between the two but she was far too tired to try and work out what was being conveyed.

"We better get going if we're gonna get the boys from school," Amelia whispers, flashing Jo an apologetic smile as she looked between her and Mia who had formed a tight grip on Jo's gown.

"Okay" Jo nods, rubbing Mia's back softly, she presses a couple more kisses on the little girl's head, before untangling her little hand from its tight fist on her gown. "You be a good girl, okay?...pinky promise" she mutters, holding her finger out for Mia. "Mommy loves you."

"To the moon," Mia mumbles sadly, as Link lifted her up from the bed,

"And back." Jo finishes, plastering on a great big smile, hoping her little girl hadn't learnt how to see through her yet.

"Get some rest, I'll get her to facetime you later okay?" Link nods, as Amelia holds the door open for them.

Jo manages a weak nod, already feeling sleep take over as she mumbles her thanks.

It's a couple of hours later when Jo wakes, she can just about make out two hushed voices that seem to be having a heated conversation as she comes round.

"Jo...how are you feeling?" As her eyes refocus she makes out Meredith and Bailey who are standing at the end of her bed.

"Fine" Jo mumbles her hand reaching out for the water on her bedside. Merediths at her side in a flash handing her the cup as she looks back at Bailey.

"Erm...Wils- Jo we got some of the results back from your blood work and it would seem-" Bailey clears her throat, looking uneasy as she tried to find the best way to break the news.

"We know what caused you to pass out basically-" Meredith continues on before Bailey cuts her off.

"You're pregnant."

Silence falls across the room, both women staring expectantly at Jo as they wait for her response, seemingly bracing themselves for a bomb that never blows.

"I know" Jo whispers, as she places her cup back down, her eyes tracing the pattern on her gown, as she hears the sharp intake of breath from both the doctors.

"You what?"

"You knew."

Jo shrugs, looking up at Meredith, she can't work out what she's thinking, her face stone cold as she meets her eye. "Yeah took the test a few days ago."

"Why didn't you-"

Meredith cuts Bailey off, holding her hand out to stop her mid-sentence, she leans further over Jo's bed.

"So is it his baby? Alex's?"

"Excuse me" Bailey gapes, looking between the two, clearly she had missed something.

"I'm not sleeping around," Jo grumbles, her eyes narrowing at Meredith's assumption it could be someone else's. The truth was Jo hadn't shown any interest in sleeping with anyone since her husband passed, but seeing Alex had certainly changed her mind.

"I never said that."

"I was practically a nun."

"Okay, I don't need to hear this." Bailey shakes her head, tutting as she exits the room, not looking back at the pair as she went.

"If you knew then you should've taken better care of yourself, how did you even..."

"Sore boobs, morning sickness which is actually all-day sickness, the exact same stuff I had with Mia." Jo had known instantly, ever since the first day she'd been sick. she'd recognised the signs, the same signs Mia had shown. Sure part of her had been avoiding work because she didn't wanna see Alex around but there was an overriding part of her that knew the minute she saw him she wouldn't be able to avoid it anymore.

"Shit Jo" Mer sighs, sitting on the side of Jo's bed she reaches out, gripping her hand tightly.

"I don't know what am I gonna do Mer." Jo whimpers, fighting back the salty tears threatening to fall.

"Whatever you want to do" Mer gives her hand a tight squeeze. "I'm serious, what do you wanna do Jo, you tell me okay? I've got you."

Jo nods, a single tear rolling down her cheek as she admits the one thing that's been on her mind since she found out since she'd spent hours agonising over what to do next. "I...I don't want this baby."
