Chapter 6

Daphne led the way out of the Slytherin Common room. As the stone wall closed behind them, she glanced back at Harry.

"So, you're Harry Potter. There are stories about you."

Harry arched an eyebrow. "Stories? What sort of stories?"

"They say you destroyed Voldemort as soon as you were born."

Harry tilted his head to stare at Daphne. "You say his name."

"What is there to fear if the supposed greatest dark wizard in the past century could be slain by a newborn? That's pretty pathetic."

Harry chuckled. "Couldn't have put it better myself."

Daphne looked at him seriously. "Do you have any idea who entered you into the tournament?"

"No," Harry said. "You don't think I entered myself?"

"Why would you?" Daphne asked stepping closer to him. "There would be no reason for you to enter yourself in the tournament unless you wanted to be at Hogwarts for some reason, which you clearly don't."

Before Harry could answer, a bored drawling voice spoke from behind them.

"So Greengrass, have you thought anymore about my proposal. It is the best a girl like you is going to get."

Harry turned to see a small boy with white blond hair, a pointed face, and grey eyes. His lip was curled in a sneer when he looked at Daphne. He totally ignored Harry.

Daphne scowled. "Go away Draco, don't you have a first year to pick on? I mean sure they are more intelligent than you, but we all have to start somewhere."

Malfoy glared at her. "I assume you haven't considered my generous offer. Being the concubine to the Malfoy line is as good as someone of your looks can hope for."

Harry stepped forward. "I think that is enough of that. You have no right to insult Daphne's looks."

Malfoy blinked at Harry. "Do you know who I am?"

"Harry's eyes glowed orange for a split second. "No, and I'd be lying if I pretended to care. Why don't you go away before something unfortunate happens? I do not like those who think they are better than others and you clearly fit that category."

The boy drew his wand. "I am Draco Malfoy," he said loudly. "I am the scion to the house of Malfoy. You are nothing compared to me."

"Ah," Harry said, "but that is where you are wrong little man. "I am Harry James Potter. I am heir to the most noble house of Potter. I think in this world that means I outrank you, does it not?"

"Malfoy raised his wand. "In station perhaps, but not in magical power."

"I think you are wrong," Harry said. His eyes glowed orange, the glow spread until his entire body was surrounded in an orange light. Harry gestured with one glowing hand. Malfoy's wand was ripped from his hand and he was thrown against the wall behind him.

"Krab Goyle," he shrieked.

Two large boys stepped out of the shadows. Both boys swung their fists at Harry's head. Harry ducked, causing the two boys to punch each other. The two thugs collapsed to the ground, out cold.

Harry stepped closer to Malfoy. "I think that leaves you all alone, doesn't it?"

Malfoy gazed at Harry with wide terrified eyes. "Who… what are you?"

"Without answering, Harry snapped his fingers. Malfoy found himself standing on his feet again. Harry calmly passed his wand back to him. "Please," he said softly. "I don't want to be a bully. Leave Daphne alone. If she decides to take you up on your offer, she will contact you."

Malfoy's wand came up in a flash. "Stupefy," he cried.

A bolt of red light struck Harry in the chest, knocking him off his feet.

As Harry fell, Malfoy stepped closer to Daphne. "Now," he said. "Where were we?"

"About here," Daphne said driving her knee into Malfoy's groin. Hearing a noise behind her, she turned to see Harry climbing to his feet.

"Are you alright?" she asked.

Harry shook his head. He felt slightly groggy as if he'd just awakened from a long nap. "Fine," he said his eyes glowing orange once again. "I should not have attempted to be kind."

Harry approached the Scion of the Malfoy family. His eyes blazed with light. Malfoy was lifted into the air. He rose higher and higher until his head touched the ceiling high above them.

"I wonder," Harry said conversationally. "What would happen if you fell from that height? How many bones would you break, hmm?"

A damp spot appeared on the front of Malfoy's robes. The strong smell of urine filled the air. "Please," he whimpered.

"I'll be watching you," Harry said. His eyes stopped glowing. Malfoy was standing in front of them, trembling.

"Take your body guards and go," Harry commanded.

Without another word, Malfoy woke the two boys and the three of them hurried away. Harry watched until they were out of sight before glancing at Daphne.

"Are you alright?"

Daphne stared at him for a full minute without answering. "No one has ever stood up for me before," she said. She gestured at her lank blond hair, thin lips, and slightly glowing blue eyes. "I've never been one of the pretty girls you know?"

"That's no reason for people to be allowed to make your life miserable or to treat you like an object."

Daphne smiled. "Thank you," she said softly. She looked at her watch. "It's almost time for Transfiguration, do you want to come with me?"

"Sure," Harry said. "There's nothing else for me to do."

As they walked, Daphne glanced at Harry. "How did you do that to Malfoy?"

"Do what?"

"You know," Daphne said. "You lifted him into the air without a wand."

Harry shrugged. "Mum taught me to use magic without a wand."

Daphne gaped. "Wandless magic?" she whispered.

Harry nodded. "If you want to call it that. I just think of it as magic."

"Do you think your Mum would be willing to teach me?"

"We'll ask her," Harry said. "I'm curious to see how I do in transfiguration. It's been a while since I practiced that."

"Come on then," Daphne said. "I'm curious to see what you know."

Professor McGonagall was a middle-aged woman with the sternest face he'd ever seen. Her hair was black and her green eyes stared at him unblinkingly.

"You look a lot like your Mother," she said briskly. Her voice had a thick Scottish brogue.

Harry smiled politely. "I get that a lot."

"Well," McGonagall said. "I am curious to see what you know."

She gestured around the room. "Sit anywhere you like."

Harry followed Daphne to an empty table. As they took their seats, McGonagall strode to the head of the classroom. "Right then," she said. "I think we all remember where we are? Today we shall be continuing to change guinea fowl into Guinea pigs."

Daphne glanced at Harry. "Can you do this?"

Harry looked down at the small bird in the cage in front of him. "Hmm," he murmured. "I don't care for guinea pigs that much. I think I'll change it into something else." Glancing up at McGonagall, he winked at the teacher."

McGonagall's stern expression softened for a split second and she came striding over. "You say you do not want to turn the guinea fowl into a guinea pig?"

"No Ma'am," Harry said respectfully. "I was never much for rodents."

"I see," McGonagall said. "If you want to change it into something else, so long as it is a transfiguration that is of the same level, I do not see it as a problem."

Harry nodded. "Alright, I think I can do that."

Harry tilted his head, staring at the guinea fowl thoughtfully. The small bird shivered, gazing at Harry with wide terrified eyes.

Harry gestured at the bird, pointing one long finger at it. The bird swelled; all its feathers fell to the bottom of the cage. Black fur sprouted all over the bird. Its legs grew longer and its wings changed into paws.

The air around the creature shimmered with magic. In mere moments, the bird had shifted into a small black cat. The cat meowed softly and pushed the door to the cage open with one paw.

McGonagall gaped at Harry. "How did you do that?" she whispered. "You changed the bird into the species that preys on birds. I wouldn't expect that until your sixth year. Come to that, you didn't use an incantation or a wand. How did you perform your magic? Where is your wand?"

"I don't have a wand."

"Then who taught you how to use your magic? How did you learn Wandless Magic?"

"My Mum taught me."

"Lily?" McGonagall said. "She taught you to use Wandless magic? How did she learn it?"

Harry shrugged. "You'll have to ask her."

"I intend to," McGonagall said. "This is revolutionary. Tell me, are there any downsides to this branch of magic?"

"It's harder to aim. When you are dealing with a large target, like a person I find it best to use my hand to direct the magic. When dealing with a smaller target, like an animal, I use a finger."

"I see," McGonagall said. "I assume this aids in concentration?"

"Yes," Harry said.

"SO, a wand would make it easier for you to use your magic?"

"Yes," Harry said, "but easy is not always best."

"True," McGonagall said before returning to the front of the class. For the rest of the lesson, Harry watched Daphne change her guinea fowl into a guinea pig.

"After the lesson was over, Harry glanced at Daphne. "What's next?"

"Charms," Daphne said. "Come on," she smiled at him. "I'm looking forward to what you'll do next."

Filius Flitwick was a small man that had to sit on a pile of cushions to see over his desk. He leapt to his feet when he saw Harry enter the room.

"That red hair marks you as a son of Lily Evans. I heard she was allowing you to come here. Tell me, how is she?"

Harry smiled at the small man. "Mother always spoke highly of you. She said you were the best teacher here."

Flitwick blushed. "Well, that is very nice of her to say."

"So what charm are you teaching today?"

"We are working on the summoning charm. Have you heard of it?"

"Yes, I've read about it. Mum taught me a variant of that spell."

"A variant of that spell?" Flitwick said surprised. "I've never heard of a different variation on the summoning charm. Would you perhaps demonstrate it?"

"Certainly," he said. He gestured at a quill on Flitwick's desk. The quill rose into the air and flew to his hand. Harry caught it and smiled at the stunned charms professor.

"Psychokinesis," Flitwick muttered. He grinned. "Technically that's not summoning."

"Technically it is," Harry said. I can summon one object from one place to another. I can even summon an object from somewhere else to my current location with a variant on psychokinesis called apportation."

"Excuse me," Malfoy said. "But what is psychokinesis?"

"Psychokinesis is an ability that allows a person to effect matter with their mind alone," Flitwick explained.

"So, it's not magic," Malfoy said.

"Yes and no," Flitwick said. "It falls in the supernatural category, but it requires no spell or wand."

"So, he's not a wizard," Malfoy said.

Flitwick glanced at Harry. "What else can you do?"

Harry vanished and reappeared beside the professor. He pointed his palm at the cushions, changing them into a solid gold chair.

"Flitwick swayed, getting use to his new seat. "Nice," he said. "How long will this last?"

Harry shrugged. "My transfigurations appear to be permanent unless I reverse them."

"Amazing," Flitwick said. "So, you can teleport, transfigure objects, and move objects from one place to another. Anything else?"

"I think I'll keep the rest of my tricks to myself if it's all the same to you."

Flitwick chuckled. "I understand completely." He turned to the rest of the class. "Let's get started."

McGonagall sank into a chair beside Lilith at the staff table.

Lilith looked up from her steak and kidney pie. "Minerva?" she asked raising an eyebrow.

"Lily," McGonagall said. "I had your son in my class today."

"Oh?" Lilith asked.

"Yes," McGonagall said. "How in the world did you teach him wandless magic?"

"I didn't want to limit him," Lilith said. "Too long have wizards been limited by wands."

McGonagall smiled at her. "I always knew that you'd be a good teacher."

Dumbledore frowned at Lilith. "Don't you want to tell her how your son can master the lost art?"

Lilith glared at him. "I don't give away all my secrets Dumbledore," she said coldly. "Do you want to tell them who you had a relationship with when you were younger?"

"Dumbledore was silent. "I thought not," Lilith said before turning back to her meal.

"Please," the small man whimpered. "Have mercy."

"Mercy," a voice said from the shadows. "Why would I give you mercy? You failed me in every way."

There was a flash of scales. The man screeched as claws and fangs tore at his flesh. The voice spoke over his screams.

"Let this be a lesson to you. Do not fail me again."

Harry awoke with a start. "What the hell was that?"
