Disclaimer: I don't own PJO
Frank's POV
I really hate my girlfriend.
I don't usually hate people, but Khione was a special exception. She was just an awful person.
And Hazel is so cute. And nice. And sweet. And funny. She's perfect. And she's back! But I can't have her.
Oh, well. I can't feel sorry for myself now. It's time for gym class. Yay?
Gym Class
I always wondered why the school didn't decide to separate the girls' and boys' gym class.
But now, I was glad to be able to see Hazel more. Percy, Jason, Nico, I, and the girls all have gym class at the same time.
"Alright, my name is Coach Hedge and I'm going to tell you right now: I do not accept shenanigans!" It was kind of hard to take him seriously, he was barely five feet tall and I'm 6'3. "NOW! Don't think I'll take it easy on you cupcakes!" Cupcakes? Ok. "You runts are going to have to toughen up!" This dude needs to take a chill pill. "So, the strategy to do this is a little competition!" I saw some jocks look excited and look around.
"LINE UP!" Coach shouted. "Split into boys and girls!" He demanded.
"The first person in each line will get onto this bar," he pointed. "And do as many pull-ups as you can! And that will just be the start of today!" Coach smiled like an evil villain. Pull-ups are fairly easy when you put your hands with your knuckles facing away from you.
But I didn't want to do this. Luckily, I was about 3/4 of the way in the back of the line. Directly across from Hazel. Dang it. Hazel might not look the part, but she can be bad-ass. The first in line was one of those girls that would just be concerned if the broke a nail. In the boys' line, there was a scrawny little Mexican guy that was wearing suspenders. This couldn't be good for either of them.
"GET ON THE BAR!" Hedge yelled at them. They both obliged. "GO!" Both of them got on the bar and the girl couldn't even do one and the boy wasn't much better. The girl didn't even strain, and the boy strained in a comical way. Like he was making fun of himself. A lot of jocks laughed, not realising that he was doing it purposely.
"NEXT!" It went on like this for about 10 minutes. Until it was my turn. Unfortunately, Jason, Nico, and Percy were behind me. I gulped and looked back at them. Jason gave me a thumbs up.
"GO!" Hedge yelled at us. I started and I thought 'How long has it been since you've been to the gym?' I was only able to do 5. Hazel quickly surpassed me, able to do 11. That was the most anyone has done so far.
"NEXT!" Coach yelled, but I didn't miss the disappointed look he gave me. Well, Jason's up next. Versus Piper.
Before Coach could yell at them, I saw Jason glance at Piper nervously. "GO!" They both got on the bar and started. Jason was doing his quick, he was going to burn out. Piper was taking it slower, but she was doing them more efficiently. I could see Jason straining and eventually, give out. He got 12, Piper got 13.
"NEXT!" Nico and Thalia. Instead of looking nervous like the rest of us, Nico and Thalia glanced at each other competitively. "GO!"
The whole time the two were on the bar, they never broke eye-contact. Until Nico looked away. He was breathing heavily and let go of the bar. Thalia smirked and dropped down herself. Nico: 15. Thalia: 17.
"NEXT!" Percy and Annabeth. Annabeth glared at the bar and then at Percy in a way that made me cringe. Percy opened his mouth, probably to try and have a conversation, but Coach shouted, "GO!" Percy looked hesitant but he got on the bar. They both started and they went at the same pace for a while. Longer than the rest of us had lasted. The rest of the class had come over to watch.
Secretly, I rooted for Percy. Most of the girls were cheering for Percy, probably hoping to be in his good graces. Most of the boys were cheering for Percy as well. Jason, Nico, and I were also cheering for Percy. The Demigods were cheering for Annabeth, obviously. They went to something like 30 each when Percy's face contorted and he began to go at a much slower pace, while Annabeth was still going strong, looking like she could do this all day.
Percy got all the way to 37 until he dropped, his chest heaving. I helped him up and bro-hugged him. "Dude, that was awesome," I congratulated. "Yeah, I guess," Percy said, still watching Annabeth. She was still going. "How the Hades does she do that?" Nico asked. "I did 15 and I can hardly raise my arms!" He threw his hands up. "Uh, you just did," Jason pointed out.
Annabeth finally hopped down and Coach Hedge's whistle dropped out of his mouth. "YOU!" He shouted to Annabeth. "Are you on steroids?!" He demanded.
"Uh, no," Annabeth answered. "Well, you did 52 pull-ups! Are you sure you're 17? You been to the gym lately?"
"No," Annabeth looked uncomfortable now. "Well then, GET BACK IN LINE!" Annabeth went over and stood with the Demigods while a lot of people stared at her. Thalia glared at anyone who's gaze lingered a little too long.
I looked at the other boys. "Is she sure she wasn't taken anything?" I asked incredulously. "She doesn't even look slightly tired!" Jason agreed. Before we could ponder this farther, Coach rounded us up.
"Ok, cupcakes! Some of you, I was a tad disappointed with," He threw a look my way and I blushed. "But, I was very impressed with others," A look at the Demigods. "I think that it was clear who won, though. ANNABETH CHASE, with 52 pull-ups consecutively!" Everyone clapped for Annabeth although some were a bit more forced. "Next up is running!" Coach announced, moving swiftly on.
There's more?! Ugh. Gym class was going to be quite a drag this year. "Let's go, cupcakes!" Hedge led us outside to the school's track, which, if I'm correct, is 400m. I hope he lets us run only half of it. "We're going to do this the same way we did the pull-ups! Except," He started cheekily, "If will be boys vs. boys and girls vs. girls! Once it has come down to two, one on for the girls and one for the boys, they will compete around the whole track! Before that though, you will go around half the track!" Well, I'm certainly not going to try and be the last one. Maybe Jason, Nico, or Percy will. They have a pretty good shot, we run together from time to time.
"Alright, line up again!" Coach ordered. This time, I was near the front of one of the lines. Directly across from me was that scrawny Mexican boy. He might be hard to lose to. "Hi, I'm Leo," He said to me. "Uh, Frank," I introduced myself.
"Hey, you think you could let me lose on purpose?" I asked. I knew it was pretty dumb to tell him my idea.
"If you run like a tortoise, sure," Leo said happily.
"I'll do my best?" This guy was weird.
And then, I was up. I looked at Leo and he beamed at me. I heard Coach's whistle and started jogging so slow, it was the same pace as walking. The Leo guy started... skipping?! A lot of students laughed at him and he blew kisses as though they were his fans. "Thank you, thank you," he shouted. We made it around half the track, and, even jogging, I was out of breath. I glanced at Coach Hedge and he looked disappointed again.
"Well... That was, odd," Hedge concluded. "Girls! You go next, we'll go like this until the final 2 are standing!" For the girls, that cheerlead-y girl that Leo had to do pull-ups against was up against... Thalia. Well, easy win for Thalia. Coach blew his whistle and it seemed like Thalia didn't even try. Then again, neither did the other girl.
"Great job, Grace," Coach congratulated, and cringed at Thalia's glare. She's hated her last name because she hated her mother.
It went on like this for a while, most kids were out of breath quickly, except for some kids who were on the track team. Finally, for the girls, it was Annabeth against Thalia. For the boys, it was Jason versus Percy. "BOYS! GO!" Jason and Percy took off. About halfway through, Percy pulled ahead slightly. The rest of the way, Percy had to fight for the lead, but eventually won.
Jason lost like a good sport, he smiled and patted Percy on the back, and Percy didn't rub it in Jason's face.
While Percy and Jason were catching there breath, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Annabeth and Thalia talking. "Yeah, uh, good job Perce," I said absently. "You okay, man?" Jason asked me. "Yeah, yeah. Just fine," I pointed to Thalia and Annabeth. "I'm gonna get a little closer," I told them.
I tried to discreetly walk over to them.
"So, you'll let me at Percy?" I heard Annabeth say.
"Yeah, although, don't think racing against me will be a piece of cake. Plus, you would've let me have Jason if he would've won, right?" Thalia replied.
"Definitely," Annabeth confirmed.
I jogged back to the guys.
"What'd you learn, Agent Zhang?" Nico asked sarcastically.
"Thalia is going to try to lose on purpose so Annabeth can race Percy," I looked at Percy and he groaned.
"Afraid of losing?" Jason nudged him.
"No," Percy moaned. "I know she'll whoop my ass."
"Well, no one better to do it, huh?" Nico said.
"Alright! Thalia, Annabeth, get to your spots," Hedge ordered. "GO!" Coach blew his whistle.
Damn! Those girls were like bullets! 3/4 of the way through, Thalia started to hang back a bit. Not very noticeable though. Really unsurprisingly, Annabeth won. The surprising thing was, she wasn't out of breath. HOW?!
Anyway, Coach congratulated both Percy and Annabeth and told them to take 5 to stretch and catch their breath.
"Well," Nico started. "It was nice knowing you, Perce."
Percy made a face at him. "I'm going over there to talk to her," He said confidently.
Jason raised his eyebrows. "I'm coming too."
"Me too," I said.
"I guess I will too, then," Nico said.
Jason elbowed Percy, who seemed a bit pale. "At least your last words will be to Annabeth," he said.
"At least," Percy agreed.
Was that a bad cliffhanger? I don't know.
KEEP BEING AWESOME,
