The year is 1973, my brother and I are 18 years old, and if all goes as planned, this will be my last night alive. All my work, my life's work has led up to this moment, my practicing, my late night adventures, all in service of this one goal. See, tonight, my brother is going to murder me, and I can think of no better way to die.
I climb the stairs two steps at a time, I've never been so excited to see the Hirano girl in my life. I knock on her door, it sounds so loud in the silence of the night. She opens it almost immediately, a smile on her face.
"Amane! You're early!" she begins, then her face sours, she's always been able to tell us apart, maybe she can feel the hatred rolling off me, "wait, Yugi-san, what are you doing here? Is Amane okay?" her look of confusion turns into a look of terror as I reach out and press my hand tightly against her mouth. I force my way in, digging my knife, a Vanadaloy Chef's Knife, my baby, from my back pocket.
"You know, I hate it when you say his name 'Amane, Amane!'" I raised the pitch of my voice to imitate her. Her magenta eyes were filled with tears, she already knew what was going to happen. "Amane is going to be right on time," With a push I sent her sprawling on the ground, she landed hard on her wrist and I smiled as I heard it snap. She began to scream, so I had to move fast. I forced my hand over her mouth and nose to shut her up. "Be quiet!" if I had to kill her quickly it would ruin all of my fun. I ran my blade along the inside of her good wrist, leaving a trail of red behind it, she was shaking now, her useless wrist cradled tightly against her chest. Her eyes were swimming, I was cutting off her air passages and she was beginning to suffocate. "Are you going to scream again?" I asked her. She shook her head, the look in her eyes was resigned. I clicked my tongue against my teeth in disappointment as I let her go.
She sucked in air like a greedy pig, her wrist was turning purple, it was undoubtedly a bad break.
"Why are you doing this?" her lank cream colored hair covered her eyes so I couldn't see her expression.
"Because I hate you," I said simply, it was the truth, I had hated her ever since we were children. Ever since she gave Amane that stupid ball. I had seen her in all of the women I'd killed before, but they had only been substitutes. Practice for my real work, all leading up to tonight. "I hate you, and I love Amane." she lifted her head then, and instead of the pleading I expected to see in her eyes, I saw anger, and beneath that there was something else, something that made my blood boil, it was pity, she pitied me.
"That's not love, wanting to take everything away from someone isn't love," she pushed her bangs out of her face with her good hand, leaving a smear of blood on her cheek. "It's greed, plain and simple."
"You're in no position to lecture me," I plunged the knife deep into her thigh, and she bit down on her lip so hard it ripped. She looked me defiantly in the eye, she wasn't going to scream, so there was nothing to do but get the job done.
~xXxXxXx~
I stood over her still warm body, her eyes were open but none of her defiance remained, her mouth was open and still dripping blood onto the carpet. I had gotten a little carried away this time, there were bits of her all over the floor.
I smiled as I heard someone coming up the steps, that would be Amane, he was in for a treat. I tucked myself behind the door, as I waited for the knock. When it finally came, I let the door swing open, revealing my masterpiece.
Amane was silent, the package he had been holding dropped from his hands, pastries spilled across the floor, mingling with the blood stains.
"Donuts, huh?" I asked, stepping from behind the door, "were those for her, or for you?"
"Tsukasa," his voice was trembling like it used to when he was a child, that familiar look of being completely lost was in his eyes, I leaned closer to him, taking in the gravity of his emotions, "what have you done?"
"I killed her, obviously," I rolled my eyes at him and took out the knife, I had carefully cleaned it while waiting for him, so it shone like silver in the dim yellow light. "what are you going to do about it?"
