What might have been

Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be.

David Nolan tossed and turned in his bed. This was all new to him as it was. It didn't feel right sleeping next to Kathryn. In fact, it felt so long that he had taken to sleeping in the guest room. He felt guilty for lying to her and telling her it was because he was having nightmares as a symptom from coming out of a coma. He couldn't be honest with her though, the truth would kill her. He knew she was his wife, but he still couldn't remember her. If he was honest, he didn't love her either. Sure, he must have once, but he'd been in a coma for years. Now things were different. Now he'd met Mary Margaret Blanchard. Was he a bad person for thinking about her? Daydreaming about what life would be like if he was with her? If, when he'd come out of his coma, he wasn't married. But why should he feel bad? He didn't remember the life before the coma. He deserved a fresh start. As far as he was concerned, that fresh start should involve the elementary school teacher he knew for sure he was head over heels for.

Every night now, David Nolan tossed and turned for hours as he fought with his conscience. Should he stay and be the husband Kathryn had been waiting on? But then, David didn't think she was happy either. He probably wasn't the same man she had fallen in love with either. He admired her for sticking around, but that didn't mean he had to…did it? He still had free will. And every ounce of him wanted to be with Mary Margaret. But whenever he decided that was the best thing to do, he knew what everyone else in the small town would say, how much they would hurt her and he was back to square one. He just wished it hadn't been like this to start with. But there was no point in dwelling on what might have been. This was the hand they had been dealt, he just had to live with it.
