Mary Margaret couldn't believe that she was having to do this. She thought that Emma was happy living with her. When the teen had first arrived a year previously, she had been so closed off. So emotionally unattached. Mary Margaret wasn't surprised given her background. But she had worked hard with the teen to slowly break down those walls brick by brick. It had only been a couple of months ago that Mary Margaret thought they were finally in a properly stable place. She guessed she was wrong. For here she was, coming to pick Emma up from the police station, after she'd been caught trying to run away. Mary Margaret couldn't deny that she was extremely hurt. If something was wrong, why hadn't Emma just talked it through with her? Why had she chosen instead to just leave without so much as a goodbye? Mary Margaret fought hard to keep all her negative feelings at bay. Right now, she had to find out what was going on with Emma.

When she arrived inside the station, Emma was sitting at Graham's desk, looking both furious and terrified all at once. Mary Margaret couldn't help but feel sorry for her. She knew from her foster daughter's file that this wasn't the first time she had tried to run away.

"Hey." Mary Margaret greeted her.

"Hi." Emma responded quietly. Mary Margaret turned to Graham, who had been watching over Emma.

"Could you give us a minute?" She asked. Graham nodded, going into the other room. Mary Margaret then took the depute's chair and sat opposite Emma.

"Well, what's all this about?" She asked her directly. Emma just shrugged. "Emma, come on, I think I've earned the right to a proper answer." She said, becoming annoyed.

"What do you care?" Emma grumbled. "You're just going to send me back, anyway."

"Emma, we've been through this at least five times. I'm not sending you anywhere." She told her. She tried to place her hand on top of Emma's, but Emma snatched it back.

"This time you will. This time is different." Emma said, not able to hide the upset in her voice.

"Because you've ran away?" Mary Margaret asked. "Emma, just because you've made a mistake doesn't mean I'll send you packing." She told her. Emma shook her head, tears building up that she fought hard to keep down.

"No." She croaked. "I ran away to save you the trouble of putting me back into the system. I'm near enough eighteen. I can find my own way…for me and the baby." Mary Margaret took a moment. Had she heard Emma correctly?

"The baby?" She asked. Emma stayed silent. "Emma, are you telling me that you're pregnant?" She asked. Emma nodded curtly. Mary Margaret sat back on her chair, shocked. Emma's social worker was not going to be happy about this.

"I repeat what I said a moment ago." Mary Margaret said quietly. "Just because you made a mistake, doesn't mean I'm sending you away." She told her. Emma looked up, astounded. She'd seen pregnant girls in foster homes before. They were always sent packing.

"What?" She asked. Was she sending her somewhere worse?

"Emma, I made a commitment when I took you in. I don't see you as just some randomer. We've been together a year now. I see you as mine. Whatever you decide to do now. I will be here to support you. You, and the baby, will always have a home with me." Mary Margaret promised the young girl. Emma couldn't quite believe it. Were there truly people on this Earth who could be so kind? Emma had never met someone like Mary Margaret before. She still wasn't entirely sure she could trust her, but she was willing to take a chance. Which is more than she had ever done before.
