Everyone is unique- part 3

KatCS15 asked for a oneshot of Emma being deaf and having to teach Snowing sign language after the first curse broke.

It was my choice to make this a continuation of a story where Emma was also deaf. So this is a third and final instalment following on from Ch685 "Everyone is unique- part 2". See, I have to follow my own rules too. Took me an age to find that chapter lol.

"This is what I'll call you." Snow translated Emma's signs for Charming. All the teachers that taught Emma at Storybrooke Elementary had gone on a basic sign language course before the beginning of the school year. They then all picked up more throughout the year as they taught Emma. So after the curse broke when Emma was thirteen, Snow was able to understand her daughter perfectly. It was Charming that needed some support. It was still strange knowing Emma was theirs. Snow had always known there was a special connection between her and the little girl, but never dreamed it was this big. The whole situation was complicated. Emma still loved Regina, she had raised her, after all. But knowing all the twisted and evil things she done made it hard for Emma to want to continue living with her. It was decided that it was in Emma's best interests for her to begin living with Snow and Charming, visiting Regina at the weekends and occasionally after school for a couple of hours. Everyone was still adjusting to the new schedule, and the new relationships. Emma seemed to be adjusting well, which was the priority. She already had a formed relationship with Snow through school, although that needed tweaking to become more like a mother/daughter relationship. Right now though, she had to find her place with Charming. That involved him being able to communicate with her.

Charming watched carefully as Emma performed the sign for dad. He mimicked it back, getting a smile and a thumbs up from Emma. He needed no translation to know that meant he had done well.

"Ok, so I know how to spell your name." Charming said, spelling out Emma in sign language. "Is that what I call you?" He asked. Snow signed out what Charming was saying, but Emma was able to read his lips. She shook her head and signed out a sentence.

"No, spelling names out is too complicated. I have a special sign for me. Ready?" Charming nodded, eager to see his daughter's name for the first time. Emma performed the unique sign she used when referring to herself. Charming smiled.

"I think that's beautiful." He told her. Emma blushed. Charming copied the sign.

"Emma." He said as he signed it. "Have I got it?" Emma nodded, giving him a double thumbs up. Snow took Charming's hand and squeezed it. Things were off to a good start.
