Bedtime songs
A guest asked for a oneshot of Emma seeing Snow comforting Aurora during their time in the EF. She comes and sits close by. Eventually, Snow settles Emma's head on her lap and sings to her "You'll be in my heart" from Tarzan.
It was hard for Emma, no matter how hard she tried to pretend like it wasn't. She had enjoyed living with Mary Margaret right from the get go. The woman was a soothing presence in Emma's otherwise unstable life. Emma never quite understood the connection until after she picked up Henry's book and realised the truth. She hardly had a chance to get her head around her first best friend actually being her mother before they were sucked into a portal taking them to the Enchanted Forest. Things didn't exactly go smoothly from there. Now, here they were, sitting in the cold, damp, forest on night watch together while Mulan and Aurora slept.
Things were tense to say the least. Emma just didn't know what to say to her mom. Snow, meanwhile, was fighting hard not to engage Emma. She knew she had to wait for her daughter to come to her in her own time. But Emma wasn't the only one needing some comfort (for all she tried to ignore it). Aurora was struggling from the after-effects of the sleeping curse. She was having terrible nightmares, and Snow was doing her best whilst she was on watch duty to comfort her. But Snow could feel someone watching her as she comforted the princess. She quickly whipped her head around only to see Emma rapidly look away. Snow smiled sadly. She knew Emma was feeling jealous over Aurora becoming closer to her, but there was little Snow could do about that. Snow would be just as caring towards Emma, if only she would ask. Snow had given up any hope of it ever happening, when she heard footsteps. She turned and saw Emma, arms folded tightly across her chest, walking towards them. Slowly, Emma lowered herself down on Snow's other side.
"It's warmer by the fire." Emma muttered. Snow smiled wamly at her, not saying a word. She didn't believe for a second that Emma was only over here for the fire, but she didn't want to scare her off.
As Snow continued to attend to Aurora, with only the crackling fire breaking the silence, Emma grew tired. Snow could feel Emma's weight growing heavier and heavier against her. They still had a good few hours of watch duty ahead, but Snow could handle it solo. Emma needed her rest. She was emotionally drained. Snow didn't say anything still. Instead, she began to gently hum one of the tunes she had from when Emma was in her tummy. Emma, unaware of the connection, found the melody strangely comforting. She felt herself becoming closer to sleep. Noting that, Snow carefully manoeuvred Emma so that she was now lying down with her head in Snow's lap. Before Emma even noticed what was happening, Snow began to sing.
"Come stop your crying it will be alright.
Just take my hand, and hold it tight.
I will protect you from all around you.
I will be here, don't you cry…" Emma's eyes were already closing. Snow smiled. "For one so small, you seem so strong.
My arms will hold you keep you safe and warm…" By the end of that line, Emma was asleep. Snow smiled down at her, brushing some hair away from her face. She threw caution to the wind and leaned down, planting a soft kiss against her head.
"Sleep well, my princess." She whispered, continuing to run a hand through her hair as she slept. Snow would never forget that evening. After all, it was the first time she got to put her child to sleep.
