Evie was a very light sleeper when Mal wasn't home so when the front door opened and shut, she woke with a start. She sat up and blinked a few times, trying to get her eyes to adjust to the darkness. Glancing down, she saw Macie was fast asleep next to her, clearly not disturbed by the noise. It didn't take long for Mal to stumble her way into the bedroom.
"Hi baby!" Mal slurred, her voice loud enough to wake the sleeping child.
"No," Evie commanded. "Get out."
"Its my house!" Mal argued back.
Evie got up and walked towards her girlfriend and pushed her backwards out of the bedroom, shutting the door behind them. "Go."
Mal frowned back, confused at what was happening. Her mind was cloudy from the tequila and the walk home from the Isle did nothing to sober her up.
Evie continued to push Mal backwards until they made it to the living room.
"What's your fucking problem?" Mal asked, focusing on every word so it came out correctly.
"You're drunk. Again. It's 3 in the morning. You're going to wake up Macie." Evie crossed her arms over her chest, blocking the hallway that led to the bedrooms.
"Well she's my daughter and I can wake her up if I want to," Mal stumbled a little as she walked towards Evie.
Evie pushed her backwards again, "she won't be your daughter for long if you keep this shit up."
Mal's eyes turned emerald. "Don't you threaten me, Evelyn."
"Then don't be fucking stupid, Mal," Evie spat back. She turned her focus away from the green eyes before her. The last thing she needed was Mal's mind control.
"She's my kid!" Mal yelled.
Evie stood her ground against the blonde. "Well she's my kid until you decide to be a mom again. When you stop forgetting to pick her up. When you decide to actually plan her birthday party for this weekend. When you stop showing up drunk. You can have her back then. Until that happens, you don't get to interact with her."
Mal grabbed a vase off the end table and threw up at Evie. The blue haired woman ducked and it smashed against a wall in the hallway. "Fuck you!"
"Yeah fuck you too," Evie replied, much calmer than her counter part. "Be sober or be gone. Those are your choices."
"You don't get to make choices when it comes to my daughter," Mal emphasized the word 'my' to prove a point.
"Watch me," Evie retorted. "Now get out of my sight and come back when you care about your family again."
Mal stood her ground, not moving from the spot she was in.
"Get the fuck out, Mal!" Evie screamed, rushing forward to grab Mal by the jacket and force her out the front door. Evie locked the door behind her and collapsed on the floor, sobs ripping through her.
Mal stood outside and banged over and over again on the door. "Let me in!" She could feel herself sobering up from the fight and she didn't like the situation she was in. "Let me in, Evie! This is my house! Open the door!"
Mal repeated beat her fist on the door for what felt like hours before she gave up. She fell to the ground and sobbed until she fell asleep, curled up outside her own apartment.
—
Mal woke up at dawn the next morning. She looked around for a moment before remembering the fight she had with the woman she loved. She knew Evie wasn't awake yet and banging on the door wasn't going to get her anywhere so instead, she sat in silence waiting.
A couple hours later the door finally opened and Mal jumped to her feet. "Evie!"
Evie looked her up and down before responding. "Go shower. You smell like tequila." She walked off, carrying Macie in her arms.
"Can we talk later?" Mal pleaded.
"No," Evie replied, ice dripping from the one word. She didn't turn around, she just kept walking towards the bus stop.
"E! Come on. Talk to me." Mal begged.
"Don't call me E." Evie yelled, her back never leaving Mal.
"Baby..." Mal said quietly as the bright blue disappeared from view.
The blonde went inside, shedding her clothes as she made her way to the bathroom, tears pouring down her face. She stepped into the shower and sat down in the tight space. She let herself cry until she couldn't manage anymore tears. She kept thinking about how she had screwed everything up. The look on Evie's face. The things she said. It was Mal's turn to be completely broken.
Despite knowing what got her into this mess, all Mal wanted was a drink. Or some coke. She didn't care anymore. She had lost her daughter and her girlfriend in one fell swoop. So why did it matter what she did now? Did she even have a job anymore? Mal didn't even know what day it was, let alone the last time she had stepped foot in the hospital. The blackout drinking had to have been going on for a couple months. It was Macie's birthday in a few days.
Mal shook the thoughts out of her head. She didn't care. She just wanted to score. She stayed sober for Macie but Evie took her away so what was the point? Her thoughts were racing back and forth and it was making her dizzy.
"Dizzy!" Mal said out loud. She knew in that instant where her girlfriend was and she wanted to talk to her. She just needed to make one pit stop first.
—-
"Long time," the man said to Mal when she walked up to him.
"Yep. Here," Mal handed the money over to him. She really didn't have the time or energy for small talk. She took the yellow vial in exchange before turning around and walking off.
She made it back to her care and very quickly snorted as much as she could handle, relishing the feeling that washed over her. Immediately her entire body felt alive. Every synapse was firing for the first time in almost 4 years. She couldn't for the life of her figure out why she had ever given it up.
She made it to Dizzy's place in record time. She tripped getting out of her car and fell face down onto the concrete. She tasted blood as she stood up and felt around her face. She was definitely bleeding outside too.
She didn't care though. She was on a mission. It took her a few minutes to make it to the door, the drugs making their way through her system. It was throwing her off balance. She finally knocked.
Dizzy appeared moments later. "No."
"I know she's here," Mal told her flatly. "I need to talk to her."
"You need to leave, Mal." Dizzy replied.
"Who is it?" Evie's voice came from the other room.
"See? I told you she was here," Mal smirked before pushing aside the heavily pregnant girl.
Mal walked through the living room and into the kitchen were she found her girlfriend sitting at the island. "Hey."
"What are you doing here?" Evie asked, annoyance stretching across her features.
"I came to talk to you!" Mal smiled. She knew she was a bit overly excitable but couldn't help it.
Evie looked at her for a moment. Mal clearly wasn't drunk but she couldn't put her finger on what was wrong. "I told you I don't want to talk, Mal."
"Come on, E. I love you. Talk to me," Mal begged. "Baby..."
There was something about the way Mal said 'baby' that made it click into place for Evie. "You're high."
Mal giggled, "I'm not!"
"Unbelievable. What the hell is wrong with you? What's going on that you would throw 4 years of sobriety out the window?" Evie demanded an answer.
Mal shrugged, "seemed like fun. I don't do anything fun. All I do is take care of everyone.
Evie sighed. She knew Mal had been stressed but she hadn't realized how much helping Evie had hurt her. "I'm sorry, Mal."
"It's fine!" Mal threw her hands up with excitement, "I'm fine, you're fine! Everything is great! Besides, it's not like I'm pregnant so I'm not hurting anyone this time."
"That you know of," Evie mumbled just loud enough to Mal to hear.
"What? You think I'm sleeping around with guys?" Mal asked.
"Who knows what you're doing while you drunk and apparently high. You could have a different girl and guy every night. I'm sure Hadley encourages it too." Evie honestly hadn't thought about Mal sleeping around until now but it wouldn't surprise her.
"I haven't fucked anyone," Mal growled.
"If only I could believe that. You've been out every night for the last month. I don't even know the last time we slept in bed together. You'd rather be with Hadley getting trashed than home with me and your kid," Evie felt the tears started to well up in her eyes. She missed the Mal that she was in love with.
Mal rolled her eyes, "that's not true."
"You really need to leave, Mal," Evie told her.
"I'm not ready to leave," Mal crossed her arms.
"Hey, she wants you to leave, so leave," Dizzy appeared.
"You're not the boss of me, small fry," Mal snapped.
"Leave her alone!" Evie told her.
"If I'm leaving, so are you," Mal told Evie, grabbing her wrist and pulling so she would following.
"Ow! Let go of me," Evie fought, twisting her wrist. Mal was much stronger than she was though.
"Let her go!" Dizzy rushed over and grabbed Mal's arm, trying to pull it away.
"Back up!" Mal shoved Dizzy, causing her to trip and fall backwards, hitting the ground hard.
"She's pregnant, Mal!" Evie screamed, causing Mal to release her wrist. "Dizzy!" Evie cried, immediately falling to the floor to help.
"Shit, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry!" Mal pleaded as she rushed to Evie's side on the floor. "Move, let me look at her."
"You've done enough damage, Mal," Evie snapped. "Just leave. I have to get an ambulance here."
"I can call," Mal told her, grabbing her phone from her pocket.
"I can do it. Go." Evie told her, not making eye contact. "Get out."
Mal looked back at Evie and Dizzy on the floor before leaving.
She rushed to the hospital as fast as she could, beating the ambulance by 15 mins. She sat in the parking lot waiting for it to arrive. She watched them wheel Dizzy in on a gurney. She saw Evie jump out of the ambulance and follow her little sister. She stayed long enough to see Celia tear through the parking lot and go through the doors. She couldn't stay though to see the result of her damage. She couldn't believe she had hurt Dizzy and possibly her child.
Mal grabbed the yellow vial and threw it out the window. She didn't care where it landed, she just wanted it gone. The events of the afternoon had sobered her up completely and now all she felt was guilt.
Mal texted Evie for the 100th time to ask what was going on but once again, no reply. All she could do was wait and cry. So she headed back to the apartment to do just that. Eventually Evie would have to come home and she would know just had much pain she had caused.
—
Evie watched Mal turn and leave while she grabbed her phone and dialed.
"Hi, my name is Evie. I need an ambulance right now. My friend she fell. She's almost 9 months pregnant. Please come." Evie dropped the phone once the call ended to focus on Dizzy once again.
"You're okay, I promise," Evie told the younger girl. Dizzy was crying in pain from where she had falling. She had landed on her arm and stomach. Evie tried so hard to not think of what could've happened to her nephew. "They will be here soon, it's okay."
The paramedics showed up in record time, and assessed Dizzy before placing her on a gurney and wheeling her to the back of the ambulance. Evie jumped up into the vehicle as well, never letting go of Dizzy's hand. Ten minutes later and they were getting back out. Evie walked as far as they would let her, never leaving Dizzy's side. Once they took her through the doors, Evie just stood and watched them close, keeping her out.
She felt her phone buzz for the 50th time. It was Mal. She hit ignore again.
Moments later Celia ran through the door and Evie just pointed. Celia disappeared behind the same doors Dizzy had minutes before. Now Evie was left alone again. Alone with the thoughts that plagued her. For the first time, pain ached from her wrist where Mal had grabbed her. She looked down and could see the faint bruising.
Evie wanted to scream and cry and disappear into her own pool of white powder but she knew they couldn't both fall down that rabbit hole at the same time. So she paced. Back and forth for what felt like hours. She paced.
It was a long time before someone came out but finally a man appeared. "For Dizzy?"
Evie ran over, "is she okay?"
"Is she any relation to you?" The doctor asked.
"Yeah she's my sister, is she okay?" Evie demanded again.
"She's okay. We set her arm and got it in a temporary cast until she can see the specialist," the doctor informed her.
Evie nodded, "and the baby?" She wasn't sure she wanted the answer.
"He is doing okay. He has a very small contusion on his brain but it should heal on its own. Dizzy will be staying here on bed rest for a couple weeks to monitor him until he is born. They are both very lucky. A fall like that could've caused way more damage. Did you happen to see how she fell?"
Evie chewed her lip and shook her head, "no, I was in the other room. I just heard her fall and ran in."
"Okay. Well the good news is she won't be having any more falls until after your nephew is born," the doctor smiled, clearly trying to get Evie to do the same but she couldn't.
"Can I see her?" Evie asked quickly.
The doctor nodded and waved for Evie to follow him. They walked through the hallways, Evie recognizing them from her own stints in the place and smiled when they finally stopped. Dizzy was laying there, fast asleep, hooked up to what seemed like 100 machines. Celia had managed to squeeze into the small bed with her and was holding her close.
Evie thanked the doctor when he walked away and she made her way closer to the bed. She gently leaned down and kissed Dizzy's forehead. "I love you. I'll be back in the morning."
—
By the time that Evie made it home with Macie, she felt like she hadn't seen the apartment in days. She walked through the front door, ready to collapse into bed but Mal stopped that dream really quickly.
"How is she?" Mal asked before Evie had even made it over the threshold.
"Go get changed, baby," Evie sat Macie down and watched her walk towards her room. She glanced at Mal to make sure she wasn't going to try to stop her. The blonde stayed out.
"She's okay," Evie told her. She sat down her bags and walked through to the kitchen. She grabbed a bottle of water and downed half in one gulp.
"And the baby?" Mal asked timidly.
"He has a bruise on his brain but it's small so they think it will resolve itself." Evie sat the water down and walked back into the living room. Mal hasn't moved. "Why are you here?"
"I needed to know how Dizzy was."
Evie nodded slowly but didn't speak.
"I feel awful, Evie. I didn't mean to hurt her." Mal moved closed to Evie but the blue haired girl backed up.
"No," she said putting a hand up to stop her.
Mal nodded this time in understanding. She knew she had majorly fucked up and had no idea what to do to fix it.
"Evie, please I'm so sorry. I won't drink again. No more drugs. I swear," Mal pleaded.
"Okay," Evie said quietly, not fully believing her. "You should go to a meeting then."
"I will," Mal promised.
"Right now," Evie pushed. "I have to get Macie fed and in bed so you should go. Go to a meeting if that's what you want to do but right now, there's no part of me that wants you around."
Mal felt like she had been slapped in the face. "What about Macie?" Tears formed in her green eyes at the question.
"When you're sober, you can see her again. Until then, goodbye, Mal." Evie took one last look at the woman she loved and walked away down the hallway.
"Evie..." Mal said almost silently through sobs. She took one last look at the hallway Evie had disappeared into and walked out the front door.
